Hitting the quad with Kiara Fontanesi

After a few quiet years, the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship commonly known as WMX had somewhat of a re-birth last year and is again on the rise with the championship kicking off for the second year in a row in Qatar before heading to an all new track and location in Thailand for round two. Every round of the six round series will be in conjunction with the world’s premier motocross series, MXGP, and after rounds one and two the remainder of the WMX championship will take place within the UK and Europe.

Just as in 2014, the WMX field is looking super deep with loads of fast chicks gearing up to contest what could be one of the best WMX seasons ever.  One of those uber fast chicks is the three-time FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion and Italian super-star herself, Kiara Fontanesi, who I miraculously managed to nab for a minute to have a quick chat about her pre-season antics.

So Kiara, how is everything going? What does your pre-season training schedule look like?

Everything is going good; I began training as every year on the 2nd of January. We spend about 3 weeks in Sardinia doing bike and physical training.

Compared to last year, are you doing anything different training wise?

This year I am definitely riding double as much as last year and I’m practicing more on tracks where the ground isn't my favorite!

In recent years you have been based in Belgium, where will you be based this season?

I will be based in Italy. I have left my apartment in Lommel because we have no sand races this year and I live with my boyfriend now so I think he will not be too happy for me to be in Belgium for most of the year. (laughs)

How are you feeling on the bike, do you feel ready?

I can't say I’m ready now, I mean I'm ready in my head but I still need to work. I will be ready for Qatar!

You’ve obviously got your sights set on world title number four. What improvements do you feel you need to make in order to achieve it?

We have been working towards world titles since 2009, so we have a good plan. It’s now easier to know what I have to work on. Everyone on my team and my trainer know what I need to do to improve.

What are your goals and expectations for 2015?

My goal remains the same. I want to be the fastest!

Who do you think will be your toughest competitor?

I am hoping that this year will not be tough as the last one, but I think all the good riders will be the same as last year. (Meghan Rutledge, Livia Lancelot, Natalie Kane and Steffi Laier)

Do you want to add anything else?

Yes, I want to say a big thanks to the people who follow and support me, you have all helped me become three times world champion!
