TV COVERAGE: HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF GREAT BRITAIN

Matterley Basin (GREAT BRITAIN) 22 September 2023 – The nineteenth round of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship is arriving in Matterley Basin this weekend for the MXGP of Great Britain.

The 2023 season reached its verdict last week at Maggiora, with Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing's Jorge Prado winning MXGP World Title and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Andrea Adamo taking the MX2 World Title. That's not to say that there's nothing left to play for when we arrive at Matterley Basin. In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2's Jago Geerts has taken over second place from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Liam Everts in the overall, but by a narrow margin of just four points. They will be neck and neck with Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing's Simon Laengenfelder as the German has the same number of points as Everts. In other words, this is shaping up to be one of the most epic battles of the season!

As always, there will again be a large worldwide LIVE coverage, which includes Eurosport 2, Teledeporte, RAI SPORT, Moji, TV3, STAN SPORTS, Telenet and more.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Great Britain, as well as the 26min Behind-the-Gate magazine featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

MATTERLEY BASIN WELCOMES ALL MXGP RIDERS TO WRAP AN INTENSE SEASON

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 20 September 2023 - The 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship concludes this weekend with the nineteenth round of the campaign in Matterley Basin for the MXGP of Great Britain.

The well-known British circuit of Matterley Basin will be present on the Calendar for the 6th time in a row and will be hosting the 13th MXGP event in its history. The first apparition of the venue was in 2006 when Stefan Everts and David Philippaerts won in MX1 and MX2 respectively. Since then, Antonio Cairoli is the most prolific rider on this track with five GP wins in MXGP (2011,2012,2014,2015, 2019). Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings comes just behind with four victories (2014 and 2016 in MX2, 2018 and 2020 in MXGP). From the ones who will take the start this weekend, Team HRC's Tim Gajser is the one who the most with two victories in 2016 and 2022 in MXGP.

In 2022, the MXGP of Great Britain was the opening round of the campaign and it was Tim Gajser who clinched the victory in front of Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer, 2nd and 3rd respectively. In MX2, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder won for the first time of his career ahead of Tom Vialle 2nd and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts 3rd.

The last Grand Prix in Italy witnessed the crowning of Jorge Prado and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo as the MXGP and MX2 World Champions respectively. They finally made it happen on the penultimate Grand Prix of the season in Maggiora. However the second and third place in MX2 are still in play between Jago Geerts, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts and Simon Laengenfelder who have only 4 points that separate them all. This last round will be intense.

This weekend in Matterley Basin will also see the ultimate rounds of the EMX250 and EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing. While in EMX250, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi secured the European Title in the penultimate round in Turkiye, the fight for the EMX125 European Title will still be on between the first in the Championship MJC Yamaha Official EMX125’s Janis Reisulis and 737 Performers GASGAS’s Mathis Valin, second. However, Reisulis has already one hand of the trophy as Valin trails by 37 points. Many things can still happen but if Reisulis continues on his recent form (he won the last 3 rounds), he could be crowned after Race 1.

Finally, the 2023 MXGP Awards will be taking place in Matterley Basin LIVE Sunday evening on MXGP-TV.com, YouTube Live and Facebook Live. The full line-up of the 2023 Champions will be present to accept their prizes in what will be a moment of celebration and amazing accolades for the shining stars of our sport.

Jorge Prado is the 2023 MXGP World Champion. His performance at the Grand Prix of Italy has propelled him to the top to win his first MXGP Championship in his career. The first race was key in that he battled with his first rival Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre until the French rider got an issue with his bike and had to retire from the race which benefitted to Prado to win it all. The Grand Prix of Great Britain will be less stressful for Prado and may well giving him wings to perform even better, mainly to prepare for the MXoN coming soon.

Romain Febvre has unfortunately experienced a very tough weekend as he saw his hopes of fighting until the very last race for the Championship win vanished with a mechanical issue. The Frenchman will now look forward to perform well in Matterley Basin to put himself in the best conditions before the MXoN on home soil.

Jeremy Seewer showed again that he is always fighting for the top as he won the MXGP of Italy, thanks to his speed and consistency. The Swiss also secured the 3rd place in the Championship which is a good achievement despite not being the one to lift the mighty trophy. He will arrive in Kawasaki next season with plenty of confidence.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff showed good flashes of speed in Maggiora but it was not enough to clinch a podium and settled for the 8th overall. This last GP would be another perfect opportunity for the Dutch rider to get a first GP win this season and get positive results before the MXoN.

The momentum for Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández is the opposite as the Spanish is regaining confidence after his injury sustained in Finland and displayed great speed in Maggiora, setting the fastest lap of the weekend and getting his first podium since Germany.  Fernandez can also battle for the 4th place in the Championship as he is 43 points behind Coldenhoff.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen has been a model of consistency this season and the MXGP of Italy didn’t change that fact with Vlaanderen going 7th overall. The Dutchman is guaranteed at least the 6th place in the Championship. His head will be turn to the Nations but he knows that it will pass by performing well in Matterley Basin.

Pretty much guaranteed the 7th place in the Championship, SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato was one of the heroes of the weekend during his home Grand Prix of Italy. Forato won his first race of his career in MXGP with the RAM Qualifying Race and narrowly missed the first podium of his career on the Sunday. It is still a great achievement as he got his best finish with the 4th overall.

Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod clinched another top 10 for the season as he displayed a solid riding in Italy. The Swiss fulfils his objective of top 10 as he is 9th in the Championship although the last round in Great Britain will decide if he finishes 9th or 10th as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux is going to come strong this weekend to get the best momentum and rhythm before the MXoN. Renaux who underperformed in MAggiora with a 16th overall will need to show a lot of determination in Great Britain to fight for a podium finish.

MRT Racing Team Beta’s Ben Watson finds himself in 15th position in the Championship before heading to his home Grand Prix. However the British best rider could well win several position if he performs well in front of his home fans and could get closer to the top 10 which would be a good achievement before going to the MXoN.

Andrea Adamo is the new MX2 World Champion after a season of consistency and amazing racings that placed Adamo at the top of the Championship mid-way in the season. What an epic moment it was for the young Italian to finally get his hands on the trophy for the first time in his career on home soil of all places. Adamo responded present despite the huge tasks that was in front him before the MXGP of Italy and finished on the 3rd step of the podium.

Jago Geerts his getting back to his best and proved it with an excellent Grand Prix victory in Italy, his 7th of the season. Although the Belgian will be nourishing some remorse about this season due to his injuries that hindered his chances of winning the Championship that was promised to him, he may still get onto the 2nd place while preparing himself for the MXoN. Geerts will give everything in Matterley Bason to reach his 100% fitness.

Asamo’s closest rival before Italy, and teammate Liam Everts unfortunately didn’t perform to his usual standards, maybe due to the pressure and crashed in the second race which definitely handed the MX2 Championship to Adamo. Evert will need to regroup quickly as the battle for the 2nd place will rage on in Matterley Basin between him, Jasgo Geerts and Simon Laengenfelder.

Simon Laengenfelder is unstoppable since his comeback from injury as he clinched another podium in Italy. The German is now also in the battle for the 2nd place in the Championship as he is levelled with Everts and only 4 points behind Geerts. The MXGP of Great Britain will be th big decider for the final podium of the season and will offer some thrilling battle.

Another place will be decided this weekend between Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf as they will fight for the 5th place. L.Coenen who is 5th in the Championship has 17 points on Horgmo and 27 points on de Wolf. Despite finishing in 7th place in Italy, L.Coenen displayed his amazing talent with a huge comeback in Race 2. The pressure will be now to maintain his 5th place and ride solidly without doing any mistakes.

Horgmo is getting better and better asnd has been fighting for the top spots during the second part of the season. His form is excellent at the moment and could gain a position in the Championship. On the other side, both riders will have to deal with ex Red Plate de Wolf who is really gaining momentum and rhythm with a great 4th place overall in Maggiora. The objective for the Dutch rider is also to raise his fitness to be as competitive as possible and come back to the top. That will be interesting to see him riding elbow to elbow with his closest rivals for a symbolic but important 5th place.

ANDREA BONACORSI BECOMES THE 2023 EMX250 CHAMPION

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 13 September 2023 – Andrea Bonacorsi has made it to the top of the EMX250 before making the jump in the bigger classes. The Hutten Metaal Yamaha Official EMX250 rider now boasts two European Motocross Championship in EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250.

At 20 years old, Andrea Bonacorsi already has a full trophy cabinet, and he will have to find some space with this new European Championship title, this time in the EMX250 class. A destiny all mapped out. That's what you’d think when you look at his journey to date in the world of Motocross. His love for motorbike sports was born at a very early age, when the barely two-year-old was walking the paths of the Italian paddocks with his father, a national enduro rider. The passion was already there, and a year later the kid was given his first bike. Once he sat on it, he never got off again. At the age of 8, Bonacorsi took part in his first races in Italy. It was the start of a long road to develop his riding skills, and one day reach the European and World elite. He reached the top level at the age of 15, when he entered the EMX125 Championship with the team KTM Silver Action. A year to familiarize himself with the category, and in 2018 an important milestone was reached, with the teenager's first podium in Lommel, the temple of motocross. That day, while he was third behind Swede Filip Olsson and his compatriot Mattia Guadagnini, Andrea realized that nothing could stop him from achieving his title dreams. But he will still have to wait.

While he joined the team Celestini KTM, the year 2019 had not been his best year, with a ninth-place finish in the EMX125 overall standings, but the feeling that he could become a Champion remained intact. And that obsession came to fruition a year later. Seven races won in 2020 and four overall wins later, the rider - at the time with Fantic Factory Team Maddii - was on the top step of the podium overall. The Hutten Metaal Yamaha Official EMX250 Team didn't fail to notice the young phenomenon's results and welcomed him for the 2021 season in the Netherlands, for his switch to the EMX250 class.

After an excellent rookie year in which he finished on the podium three times and obtained fourth overall, Bonacorsi has started his 2022 season...in MX2! Indeed, he was given the opportunity to replace Thibault Benistant at Matterley Basin, with the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team. This first attempt did not end as he'd hoped, but other opportunities to shine at this level came later. A second European campaign which he was therefore able to alternate with a few races in the MX2 class resulted in a 6th place in the EMX250 overall standings. Almost anecdotal as the experience gained will be beneficial for the future.

Three years after his coronation in EMX125, Andrea Bonacorsi has conquered a new crown. And with manner. In the nine races of the 2023 EMX250 Championship, the Italian reached the podium each time, winning a total of four rounds.

During the first Round, in Sardinia, Bonacorsi went 1-1 to get a precious win to kick-start his season while Prugnieres clinched the second place on the podium and Karssemakers third overall. Then at Trentino, Valerio Lata clinched his first EMX250 win in front of the Red Plate holder who finished second (1-2), and Ferruccio Zanchi third for an 100% Italian podium. Agueda saw Bonacorsi getting his second overall win of the season, while Kay Karssemakers made a good operation with his solid racing getting second on the podium and second in the Championship Standings. Ferruccio Zanchi also rode very well in Portugal getting a well deserve back-to-back podium.

A week later in intu-Xanadù, Madrid, Cas Valk won the overall while the No.32 managed to get an important overall second place for the Championship and Kay Karssemakers made another podium in third. Coming to Eastern Europe then, at Kegums, the boy from Yamaha was surprised by finishing third behind Ivano Van Erp and the constant Kay Karssemakers. Bonacorsi tried to correct his “failure” in Germany. He finished second behind Marc-Antoine Rossi, but ahead of Kay Karssemakers. Still under threaten while he was still leader overall, the Italian got a new second place at Uddevalla, Sweden (2-2), beaten this this time by Cas Valk while the Third-Man Kay Karssemakers fought hard to get on the last step of the podium.

But it wouldn't be long anymore before Andrea regained the taste of victory. And it was done in The Netherlands, with 2-2 results that allowed him to take first overall, in front of Cas Valk and Kay Karssemakers. And at Afyonkarahisar, despite a fourth place in Race 1, the kid from Bergamo surpassed himself to take the lead in the second heat and snatch a precious victory overall, the one that offered him the title, ahead of Valk second and Karssemakers third.

“It’s really cool for me. I worked so hard during the last two-three years to achieve this goal. If I put a goal to myself, I do everything that I can to realize it. And I did it so I’m really proud of myself because I did not give up and I’m really proud of all my guys, around me”, Bonacorsi rejoiced after winning the overall and the European title in Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye.

At the same time, he gave Yamaha its third EMX250 title in the last four years. Thibault Benistant in 2021, then Rick Elzinga in 2022, had previously allowed the Japanese brand to establish itself as the benchmark manufacturer in the category in recent years.

BONACORSI DOMINATES IN TURKIYE TO CLINCH THE EMX250 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE

AFYON (Turkiye) 3 September 2023 – The penultimate round of the EMX250 in Afyon, Turkiye witnessed greatness in the making with many battles and good racing happening over the weekend.

In the end, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi managed to clinch the overall and the EMX250 Championship Title with one round to spare and a 100% podiums which shows the dominance of the Italian this season. Bonacorsi cannot be caught up by Husqvarna BT Racing Team’s Kay Karssemakers in the last round in Great Britain and can enjoy to be a double European Champion following his title in EMX125.

The round of Turkiye then saw Andrea Bonacorsi win the overall with an impressive second race win in front of Fantic Racing MX’s Cas Valk in second who is confirming week after week his talent and Kay Karssemakers, third, who has been consistently riding for the top spot throughout the season.

In Race 1, it was Husqvarna BT Racing Team’s Maxime Grau who took the best start and took the command of the race in front of Cas Valk and KTM Beddini Racing Team’s Valerio Lata. Grau was doing very well until lap 3 of 15 when he crashed down to pick himself up in 11th place. Valk didn’t need more to take the lead but Lata stated to threaten the Dutch rider and launched himself on the inside of Valk to take the lead on lap 5. However, a couple of corners later, Lata went down and was out of the lead which left Valk off the hook. Valk pulled away and flew to victory continuing on his recent form. Grau managed to get to 10th in the end.

Lata had to settle for the 3rd place in the end. Fantic Racing MX’s Alexis Fueri who was 3rd when Lata fell, moved up to 2nd place. However, an impressive VRT KTM Factory Juniors’ Ferruccio Zanchi came from the 7th place on the opening lap and put pressure on Fueri over few corners on lap 7 and finally took a commanding line that nudged Fueri out of the way. Fueri fell quickly after and in the end had to retire a few laps later. Zanchi who set a couple of fastest laps during the race was very quick and finished comfortably 2nd.

Red Plate Andrea Bonacorsi got a decent start to find himself in 5th right in front of his closest rival in the Championship, Kay Karssemakers Both riders got overtaken by a very fast Zanchi and both riders followed each other. Karssemakers could not find the way past the Championship leader and had to settle for 5th in the end while Bonacorsi finished 4th and gave himself the best chance for winning the Championship after Race 2.

It was a great performance for Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Benjamin Garib who consistently rode into the top 10 to climb to the 6th place in the end after overtaking his teammate Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Quentin Prugnieres on the very last lap. Prugnieres rode well and settled for 7th. Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Karlis Reisulis stayed consistent and finished on the same position that he found himself in the opening round, 8th.

In Race 2, Fueri took another good start with the Holeshot and took the lead but unfortunately the young French rider committed a mistake and move down to 6th while Karssmakers took the lead in front of Lata. Karssemakers was doing all he could to delay Bonacorsi’s Title while in the meantime, Bonacorsi took a decent start to get to 4th on the opening lap. Karssemakers was getting under pressure by Lata when Bonacorsi caught them up and overtook both rider over the course of two laps to show his determination to win the Title with a race and overall win. On lap 7, Bonacorsi was the new leader and started to pull away from Karssemakers to comfortably clinch the race win, the overall round in Turkiye and the EMX250 Championshipin an incredible atmosphere celebrated by all his team and family.

Karssemakers had to deal with a menacing Lata who managed to find the way to pass the Dutch rider to go 2nd on lap 10. However, the Italian tipped over on the very next turn and left Karssemakers off the hook in 2nd position while Lata went down to 4th. Karssemakers managed to keep his 2nd place until the end and keep Lata out of the podium as both riders levelled in point. Lata finished 4th overall in the end while Karssemakers secured yet another podium with 3rd overall.

Prugnieres showed very good qualities again in race 2 as he solidly finished 3rd after avoiding to make mistakes and keep good control. Prugnieres went 5th overall with 7-3. Valk didn’t have the same impact as in the first race but stayed focused to gain two positions along the way and finish 5th which put him on the second step of the podium and kept a chance to threaten Karssemakers for the 2nd place in the Championship with a 29 points gap.

Garib confirmed his good first race with another confident performance to finish 6th and go 6-6 for 7th overall. Zanchi had a nightmare in race 2 as he crashed in the start straight and made other mistakes along the way despite a good comeback in 11th place to finish 6th overall. Zanchi compromised his chances of podium by alternating the great and the less decisive.

Andrea Bonacorsi: “It was really good. I struggled a bit on Saturday but today I managed to win it and win the overall. I really want to thank a lot my whole family who is at home watching, my boss and everybody around me, Yamaha, Monster Energy who all helped me so much to achieve this goal. We finally made it and thanks to everyone.”
