MXGP of Czech Republic Set for Action-Packed Weekend in Loket

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 13 July 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship returns to Loket this weekend for the 25th edition of the MXGP of Czech Republic at the old-school track!

Located 150km west of Prague, Loket has been a part of the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar since 1995, with winners of the Czech Grand Prix including the likes of Joel Smets, Stefan Everts, Ben Townley, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Jeffrey Herlings, Romain Febvre and Jorge Prado, among others.

Last season, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado was victorious with a 1-3 results, ahead of Antonio Cairoli and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, all while Team HRC’s Tim Gajser struggled after crashing big in the second race.

Meanwhile in MX2, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini was the overall winner ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux and Thibault Benistant as the trio battled intensely while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle retired from the second race.

This time around, the MXGP of Czech Republic has a mega weekend in store for the fans, with two action-packed days including finals of the EMX65 and EMX85 Championship, along with the final two rounds of the Junior e-Motocross series and the unique one-round EMX2t Championship which will see a new winner this season, as last year’s Champion, Maximilian Spies will not be defending the title and will instead line up in the MX2 category.

In MXGP, there is no doubt that Championship leader, Tim Gajser of Team HRC is the favourite heading into this weekend’s race, having won the last two Grand Prix’s on the bounce, after struggling with illness. Gajser has been looking comfortable lately and having a 125-point lead probably has something to do with that.

Thought looking at his performance in Loket last season, there is no doubt that the Slovenian will be motivated to make-up for last year’s mishap and score some more solid points.

Last year’s Czech Republic Grand Prix winner, Jorge Prado of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing will be one to watch. Prado has already won a GP this season but has had some tough moments ever since and has been looking to get back on the top of the box. Now with a couple of weeks to re-charge and continue his work on his fitness, big things could be expected of the Spaniard.

Prado also has some nice memories in Loket, having claimed his first red plate in 2018 (in MX2) and then winning the GP in 2019 and 2021, so a victory this weekend could be a nice addition.

Another serious podium threat comes from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who already has four podiums under his belt. While it was a slow start to the season for the Swiss, he sure has picked up the pace in the last several races. While Indonesia was a tough one for the Yamaha rider, he is no doubt going to be back to his usual self this weekend and could add another podium to his growing tally. Points will also be important for Seewer, if he doesn’t want to completely lose his grip on Gajser for the title.

There is also Romain Febvre of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP who has come close to a podium visit ever since getting back to racing at the German Grand Prix. It has only been two races that we have seen Febvre back for, but the Frenchman is looking strong and this weekend could be his moment to shine.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini also has some nice memories when it comes to racing in Loket, as he scored his second GP victory there last year in MX2. Guadagnini made the move up to the premiere class from the MXGP of Sardinia and has delivered some nice top 10 results ever since.

Some new faces are making the move up to MXGP, which includes iXS hostettler MXGP Team's Kevin BrumannHonda 114 Motorsports' Haakon Fredriksen and Conrad Mewse. The trio previosuly showed promise in MX2 so it will be interesting to see what they can do in the premiere class.

Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 229 p.;

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will be looking to have another top weekend, following his 1-1 result in Indonesia. The Frenchman is now in control of the red plate once again, though by only four points as the title fight between him and Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing continues.

Both Vialle and Geerts have only been off the podium twice this year, which only highlights their incredible track record meaning a podium this weekend is very likely, though it will only be a matter of who is standing on the top step. Both riders had bad luck in Loket last year as they failed to mount the podium, but that should not affect their performance this time around.

For Geerts it will be important to get ahead of Vialle this weekend if he wants to claw back the points and take back the red plate. But he cannot focus too much on this as that’s when mistakes could start to creep in, and the same applies for Vialle.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant also has a pretty strong podium track record this season, having finished on the box four times which also includes his maiden overall win in Germany. The Frenchman has shown that he can be one of the riders to get in the mix of Vialle and Geerts who have been keeping things tight this year. Benistant was also on the box in Loket last year and won the second race, so that should also give him a nice confidence boost.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder is another rider to look out for as he made his third podium appearance a couple of weeks ago in Samota-Sumbawa. Längenfelder clearly has what it takes to battle at the front, and it would be nice to see him do just that this weekend.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf will also be another possible podium threat and it will be interesting to see how much progress he has made since Indonesia which was his second GP back from injury.

MXGP Awards concludes Thrilling 2021 Season!

MANTOVA (Lombardia) 10 November 2021 – The annual MXGP Awards celebrated a historic season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, that saw the title clash in the premier MXGP class go down to the final chequered flag.

Once the final race of the day was finished at the final World Champion of 2021 was decided, it was time to begin the well-earnt celebrations of the entire paddock of what has been the most intense season of racing to date.

The MXGP Awards is a prize giving ceremony that is designed to celebrate all the amazing accomplishments from this season in the MXGP paddock. The awards were hosted by the MXGP-TV’s Commentator Paul Malin and MXGP-TV Presenter, Lisa Leyland from the Studio in Mantova. The entire event was live streamed worldwide on www.MXGP-TV.com, as well as MXGP’s YouTube channel.

The evening kicked-off with a special message from Infront Moto Racing’s CEO David Luongo and FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela who shared a few words about the incredible season that we all have witnessed in 2021.

David Luongo: “It has been a long journey again this year. Very challenging as when we started the year again many COVID-19 restrictions were in place. But the last couple of months have been very exciting. From the MXGP of Germany we have had public on site and increased the amount of spectators and the intensity of the championship until the final round today. As a promotor, we have been working hard with our team until today to have a full-house crowd and to have racing like this, to have the championship decided on the last day. I think all of the fans enjoyed this MXGP season a lot. For us it was important to deliver 18 races along with the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations which took place also here in Mantova. We are very confident that next year we will be back to normal, to start the season earlier and see new countries come back to the MXGP calendar. But this season was just epic, so I want to say a huge congratulations to all of the riders in MXGP and MX2, but the MXGP top three, Jeffrey, Romain and Tim they really went to another level. And also, a thought to Tony Cairoli who ended his Grand Prix career today. He is one of the biggest ambassadors of our MXGP’s history so it was a very intense season”.

Antonio Alia Portela: "It has been an exceptional season in every way. On one hand, the restrictions imposed in certain countries and the evolution of the pandemic in others have caused the calendar to be altered, moreover, the lack of public attendance at some of the events has put many organizers to the limit. The solution has come from Infront Motor Racing, as last year, offering also us double or triple headers. This situation has again tested all the elements that make GPs run effectively, as IMR, the FIM, the FMNs, the Teams, the Sponsors and the Organizers have shown their strength to offer the world one of the best seasons that have lately been lived in MXGP and as every GP has offered a variety of winners, the uncertainty among the MXGP Championship title has remained until the last race. On behalf of the FIM and the CMS I would like to personally thank all those who have made this a historic and unique year, from which rivers of ink will probably be written, to show that the motocross that runs through our veins is more alive than ever and that next year will continue to offer us unforgettable moments through the intense season that has just begun."

The Awards ceremony then continued, as the winning teams and manufacturers were presented with their awards, followed by this year’s champions in the MXGP, MX2, WMX and EMX classes, who each received their prizes. EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Champion, Valerio Lata was the first to pick up his prize, followed by Nicholas Lapucci who secured the EMX250 title yesterday, along with the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing, EMX Open and Women’s Motocross World Championship winners, Maximilian Spies, Davide De Bortoli and the three-time WMX Champion Courtney Duncan.

This year, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini was the recipient of the Jan de Groot Award that honours the most promising young talent. Guadagnini had an incredible rookie season in MX2 that saw him hold the red plate, mount the podium a total of six times, win three races and stand on the top step twice!

Additionally, Tom Vialle and Jorge Prado were presented with the Fox Holeshot Award, for their incredible starts this season, that saw Prado claim 18 Fox Holeshots and Vialle an impressive 22. For Prado, this was his fourth consecutive Fox Holeshot Award, while for Vialle it was his second.

And then it was time to find out which MXGP rider was the winner of the Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena prize! The newly crowned MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings was declared winner, having received the most fans’ votes in total throughout the 2021 season.

Before the final awards were handed to the MXGP and MX2 World Champions, it was time for a special moment of the evening as we paid tribute to the 9-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli who was awarded with the ‘222 Lifetime Number’ which means he will be the only one to ever have that number in MXGP.

Antonio Cairoli: “It’s amazing to reach something like this in this business. I am really happy about my career, I wouldn’t change anything. Winning one title is already something special but making such a journey is really fantastic and I am really happy even if today didn’t go as I wished”.

The evening then concluded with the awards for the two FIM Motocross World Champions, Jeffrey Herlings and Maxime Renaux who each received their championship plates, along with their champions rings as part of their prizes for this season.

Spies Secures EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing Title as Lapucci wins in EMX250

MANTOVA (Lombardia) 6 November 2021 – Today’s round of Lombardia in Mantova saw the penultimate and final rounds of the EMX250 and the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing series, as a new European Champion was crowned.

Fantic Factory Team Maddii had plenty to celebrate as Maximilian Spies secured his first European title in the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing after a 1-3 result, as well as an overall victory from their second two-stroke rider Federico Tuani who went on to win the second race. Meanwhile in EMX250 their rider Nicholas Lapucci had the perfect day as he extended his championship lead with two race wins for his fourth overall win of the season.

The EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing Championship chase came down to the wire once again this season. In the opening race, Spies got a strong start as he led his closest rival at the time, Brad Anderson of Verde Substance KTM, while his teammate Tuani was down in third. Spies looked relaxed as he was able to focus on his own race, while Anderson and Tuani battled closely for second position, and ultimately second in the championship too.

After several attempts and some hard work, Tuani was able to make a pass stick on the Brit which gave him the advantage in terms of the championship standings as just two points previously separated the pair. Tuani then was able to close the gap down to his teammate, Spies, but could not get around the German for first, as Spies went on to win the race.

By the second race, Tuani and Anderson were tied on points as Spies looked more in control of the title. And as the gate dropped for heat two, it was Anderson who got the advantage out of the gate as he exited turn one as the race leader. Just behind him was Tuani and Spies.

Tuani was on a charge as it took him less than two laps to get around Anderson who slipped to second. Spies was there in third, but as the race progressed, he decided to avoid any risks and settle for third. Meanwhile Tuani was in total control as he went on to win the race by an impressive 15.630 seconds over Anderson. It was a big moment for the Italian who not only celebrated his first race win, his first overall victory but also a silver medal in the championship.

In terms of the season, Spies had a near perfect series as he won five out of the possible six races and maintained a 100% podium record. Initially entering the series as a wildcard, he soon found himself at the forefront of the title battle and therefore made the decision to continue in order to stay within contention of his first European Championship.

Spies was the overall round winner in Czech Republic and Lommel, with the perfect 1-1 score at both events, while the final round here in Mantova saw him go 1-3 for second overall. At the beginning of the season, Anderson was his closest rival as he finished second on the podium at the first two rounds, only to slip to third at the final event as Tuani went on to win and pick up those extra points that he needed to move up in the championship standings.

All three title contenders were on the podium at every round of this short three-round series, which as usual delivered some close racing and we once again witnessed the title battle go down to the final chequered flag.

Maximilian Spies: “Today I won the first race, then for the second I was like “I can win if I want, but if I crash it’s also not good”. The most important thing for me is that I took the championship. I can’t realize right now that I got the title… Maybe I will tomorrow then I can cry about it. But yeah, I am super happy”.

Federico Tuani: “Finally today I got a win after what did in Lommel. Today was also a great day, I finished second in the championship. I did a lot of mistakes in Loket and Lommel. However, I also want to congratulate Max who did a great job. It was a good championship with good battles. We enjoyed it a lot. I want to thank my family, my team and everyone who supported me during this season”.

Brad Anderson: “Yeah I’m a bit disappointed obviously. I’d rather have won or come second but these boys have been outstanding throughout the season and I had nothing for them today. I was a bit unlucky in the race obviously. But I had a good second race and gave my one hundred percent. That’s all I could do really. I came away with third overall, third overall in the championship and I am pleased with that. I would just like to thank all the sponsors and everyone who supported me. Thank you”.

In the first race of the EMX250 category, it was Lapucci who took the holeshot from Yago Martinez of Team VRT Nordpesca Holland as well as Mike Gwerder and Oriol Oliver of WZ Racing Team. Kevin Horgmo of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery and Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi just inside the top 10.

Martinez then started to apply the pressure onto Lapucci, as the gap stayed under two second, while Gwerder had his teammate Oliver pushing to get by for third. Horgmo and Bonacorsi were able to make some nice passes in the opening few laps as they caught onto Oliver and joined the battle for third.

Oliver then found his way past Gwerder for third, as Bonacorsi and Horgmo were looking to do the same. Bonacorsi was able to get by the Swiss, while Horgmo could not do the same.

Cornelius Toendel of Riley Yamaha Racing was having a strong ride in eight before crashing and dropping down the order. He was however able to come back to seventh by the end of the race.

Meanwhile his teammate Hakon Fredriksen was having a strong comeback after a mid-pack start as he caught onto the back of Horgmo. He got alongside his fellow Norwegian and was able to make a quick pass on him and then Gwerder in less than a lap. After getting himself into fifth, he then went after Bonacorsi for fourth, but the Italian was able to defend his position from the Norwegian.

Martinez remained close to Lapucci for the entire race as he kept a nice distance to the leader. But in the end, despite several attempts, he could not get close enough to the Italian who went on to win the race. Third was Oliver, while Horgmo eventually passed Gwerder for seventh in the final stages of the race.

In race two, it was again Lapucci with the flying start as Oliver and Horgmo followed behind. Toendel and Fredriksen also good off to a good start.

After getting a much stronger start in the second race, Horgmo made a mistake and lost a position or two on the opening lap, as Fredriksen moved into third.

Lapucci then got his head down as he looked to open up a gap to Oliver and Fredriksen. Oliver then fell on lap five which allowed Fredriksen through and luckily the Spaniard didn’t lose any more positions after that.

Pole man, Jeremy Sydow of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team had a much better start to the second race but would later fall not long after Rick Elzinga of TBS Conversions Racing Team passed him for seventh and would not continue with the heat.

As the race went on, Horgmo caught onto Toendel as he searched for a way into fourth. Unfortunately for Horgmo, Toendel was able to defend his position and keep hold until the end.

Lapucci went on to win the race from Fredriksen, as Oliver maintained third despite pressure from Toendel and Horgmo in the final few laps. A 1-1 result handed Lapucci another overall victory as he extended his championship lead to 45 points over Horgmo. Oliver took to the second spot of the podium with a 3-3 in the races, while Fredriksen climbed the podium for the second consecutive round as he finished third.

Just one round remains of the EMX250 Championship as Lapucci has one hand on the title, with Horgmo now falling 45 points behind the Italian as Elzinga remains third. Bonacorsi now moves up to fourth in the standings as Liam Everts of KTM Liamski did not line-up for today’s races due to a crash in practice.

Nicholas Lapucci: “Today was just a perfect day. I am really happy how the things went. I wanted it so much, because my family came to Pietramurata, but it did not go as planned. So, I am happy to go 1-1 today and to put an important stamp for the championship. So, let’s focus on Tuesday and bring it home”.

Oriol Oliver: “It’s amazing. It’s my first podium, after struggling the whole season and searching for my speed. Today I took two good starts and from the first lap I felt so good on this track. Two third place finishes for third overall is amazing. Thank you to my family and my team”.

Hakon Fredriksen: “I think it was the best I could do after the first race. I had two bad starts. I couldn’t find my flow in the beginning of the first race, so I struggled a little bit. But second race I could make a lot of passes in the first lap. So, I am happy to finish second in the second race and take it to the podium. Of course, my goal is to win the last race. I think it’s possible, I just need two good starts”.

MXGP Set for Title Showdown in Mantova

PIETRAMURATA (Italy) 3 November 2021 – The 2021 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship is nearing the end, as we enter the final two rounds in Mantova for the MXGP of Lombardia and MXGP of Città di Mantova.

Last weekend, we saw Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux secure the crown in MX2 to become this year’s MX2 World Champion, but the second spot is yet to be decided. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle has moved up to the silver medal position after Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts was forced to DNF race two at the MXGP of Garda. But the Frenchman is 16 points ahead, which means that Geerts can still challenge for the silver medal during the next two GPs.

Meanwhile in MXGP, things could not get any more tense as the red plate has a new owner and just three points separate Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings. There are still 100 points up for grabs and it will be interesting to see how things will play out.

Alongside the fierce MX2 and MXGP action we will also see the final round of the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing as Fantic Factory Maddii Team’s Maximilian Spies will enter the final round looking to wrap up his first EMX title. Last year’s Champion, Brad Anderson of Verde Substance KTM will look to get back in the driving seat and secure his fourth title as he sits just 16 points behind the leader. In addition, we will also see round nine of the EMX250 series, as Fantic Factory Maddii Team’s Nicholas Lapucci will look to put together two solid and mistake-free races to stay ahead of his championship rival, Kevin Horgmo of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery.

The MXGP of Lombardia is bound to deliver some incredible racing as Febvre, Gajser and Herlings will be focused on scoring maximum points, in order to have the best chance of clinching the title this season. This championship fight that we are bearing witness to, is by far one of the exciting ones in the history of the sport and something we have not seen for a while.

And while this championship showdown is going to take centre stage in Mantova, another important moment will be the final races of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. The second half of the season hasn’t been easy for the 9-time world champion who lost his chance to stay in the fight for what would have been his 10th title. But with that pressure off his shoulders, we have seen Cairoli back in the game during the last two GP’s.

During the MXGP of Pietramurata, Cairoli secured his second overall of the season and then at the following MXGP of Garda, was once again competitive inside the top five. It will be interesting to see what the Italian can bring for his final races, especially with the huge support he is set to have around the track!

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer will enter the MXGP of Lombardia off the back of his second career MXGP overall victory. No doubt this will give him a confidence boost, especially as the MXGP of Lombardia last season was when he got his first ever GP win. Seewer has been on form lately after his struggles in the first half of the season. Now back to fitness, the Swiss is just four points behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado in the MXGP championship standings, so we could see the Yamaha rider go for fourth, to end his season on a positive note.

Of course, Prado will not look to give it up easily as he continues his struggle with a back injury that he picked up a few rounds ago. Despite the damage, the Spaniard has been able to run well inside the top 10 and even lead some laps.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Ben Watson will be looking to end their season with a strong result and Mantova could be the perfect place to do that. Coldenhoff secured his second podium of the season at the MXGP of Pietramurata and has previously been on the box in Mantova last year. While Watson has fond memories at the circuit too. He climbed the podium last season in MX2, as well as becoming this year’s overall MXGP winner at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, as he helped Team GB onto the podium once again!

Then there’s also Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen who won the MXGP of Lombardia last season in MX2 and won a race at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations this season in Mantova too. So, this is a track he certainly feels strong on, and it will be nice to see if he could end his MXGP rookie season with a podium. His teammate, Arminas Jasikonis will also make his comeback at the final two races after missing the triple-header in Pietramurata. The reason why Jasikonis took the time off is unknown, but it will be good to see him back behind the gate.

Making a move to MXGP this weekend is Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez who after a string of podiums in Pietramurata (three consecutive third place finishes) will take on the premiere class in order to gain experience and to see how he matches up with the 450cc guys.

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 614 points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 613 p.; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 611 p.; 4. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 502 p.; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 498 p.; 6. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 496 p.; 7. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 397 p.; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, GAS), 391 p.; 9. Alessandro Lupino (ITA, KTM), 287 p.; 10. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 284 p.;

With the MX2 title decided, Renaux will enter the MXGP of Lombardia with a lot less pressure on his shoulders. However, this doesn’t mean that he won’t be pushing for the win. The Frenchman is keen on continuing with the strong momentum of the previous round, where he stood on the top step of the podium as he secured the MX2 crown, so there is no doubt that we will see him pushing at the front of the field.

While Vialle was unsuccessful in defending his title this time around, due to injury early on in the season, he has been very competitive since his return. In fact, he has led more laps than any other rider in the category, with the number currently at 255 while Renaux has led 103 and is second in terms of that statistic. Vialle has had a couple of unlucky races which has resulted in DNF’s but he is now second in the championship and will push for a strong end to his season as he begins to focus on 2022.

Geerts still has a chance to get back that silver medal position, but he will need to bounce back after a devastating MXGP of Garda where he could not carry on with race two and thus was unable to take the title chance into the next round. With that no behind him, it will be fascinating to see how he comes back from that.

Meanwhile Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton could be one of the favourites for the podium this weekend. The Australian was second overall during the MXGP of Lombardia last season and he secured that spot with a race win, so this should give him a confidence boost. He is yet to lead any races, as his younger teammate Kay de Wolf has led 15 laps this season, but this could be the weekend we see him at the front.

Then there’s also Rene Hofer and Mattia Guadagnini of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. At the last two rounds, we saw Hofer secure his first race wins in MX2 as well as win his first Grand Prix, while Guadagnini has struggled. It will be interesting to see if Hofer can carry this success into the hard sand track and whether Guadagnini can get back on the box after some successful races in Mantova last season in EMX250. The motivation will be there for sure as the Italian will want to put on his best performance for his home fans as he looks to end his MX2 rookie season in the best way.
