MXGP of Czech Republic Set for Action-Packed Weekend in Loket

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 13 July 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship returns to Loket this weekend for the 25th edition of the MXGP of Czech Republic at the old-school track!

Located 150km west of Prague, Loket has been a part of the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar since 1995, with winners of the Czech Grand Prix including the likes of Joel Smets, Stefan Everts, Ben Townley, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Jeffrey Herlings, Romain Febvre and Jorge Prado, among others.

Last season, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado was victorious with a 1-3 results, ahead of Antonio Cairoli and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, all while Team HRC’s Tim Gajser struggled after crashing big in the second race.

Meanwhile in MX2, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini was the overall winner ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux and Thibault Benistant as the trio battled intensely while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle retired from the second race.

This time around, the MXGP of Czech Republic has a mega weekend in store for the fans, with two action-packed days including finals of the EMX65 and EMX85 Championship, along with the final two rounds of the Junior e-Motocross series and the unique one-round EMX2t Championship which will see a new winner this season, as last year’s Champion, Maximilian Spies will not be defending the title and will instead line up in the MX2 category.

In MXGP, there is no doubt that Championship leader, Tim Gajser of Team HRC is the favourite heading into this weekend’s race, having won the last two Grand Prix’s on the bounce, after struggling with illness. Gajser has been looking comfortable lately and having a 125-point lead probably has something to do with that.

Thought looking at his performance in Loket last season, there is no doubt that the Slovenian will be motivated to make-up for last year’s mishap and score some more solid points.

Last year’s Czech Republic Grand Prix winner, Jorge Prado of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing will be one to watch. Prado has already won a GP this season but has had some tough moments ever since and has been looking to get back on the top of the box. Now with a couple of weeks to re-charge and continue his work on his fitness, big things could be expected of the Spaniard.

Prado also has some nice memories in Loket, having claimed his first red plate in 2018 (in MX2) and then winning the GP in 2019 and 2021, so a victory this weekend could be a nice addition.

Another serious podium threat comes from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who already has four podiums under his belt. While it was a slow start to the season for the Swiss, he sure has picked up the pace in the last several races. While Indonesia was a tough one for the Yamaha rider, he is no doubt going to be back to his usual self this weekend and could add another podium to his growing tally. Points will also be important for Seewer, if he doesn’t want to completely lose his grip on Gajser for the title.

There is also Romain Febvre of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP who has come close to a podium visit ever since getting back to racing at the German Grand Prix. It has only been two races that we have seen Febvre back for, but the Frenchman is looking strong and this weekend could be his moment to shine.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini also has some nice memories when it comes to racing in Loket, as he scored his second GP victory there last year in MX2. Guadagnini made the move up to the premiere class from the MXGP of Sardinia and has delivered some nice top 10 results ever since.

Some new faces are making the move up to MXGP, which includes iXS hostettler MXGP Team's Kevin Brumann, Honda 114 Motorsports' Haakon Fredriksen and Conrad Mewse. The trio previosuly showed promise in MX2 so it will be interesting to see what they can do in the premiere class.

Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 229 p.;

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will be looking to have another top weekend, following his 1-1 result in Indonesia. The Frenchman is now in control of the red plate once again, though by only four points as the title fight between him and Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing continues.

Both Vialle and Geerts have only been off the podium twice this year, which only highlights their incredible track record meaning a podium this weekend is very likely, though it will only be a matter of who is standing on the top step. Both riders had bad luck in Loket last year as they failed to mount the podium, but that should not affect their performance this time around.

For Geerts it will be important to get ahead of Vialle this weekend if he wants to claw back the points and take back the red plate. But he cannot focus too much on this as that’s when mistakes could start to creep in, and the same applies for Vialle.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant also has a pretty strong podium track record this season, having finished on the box four times which also includes his maiden overall win in Germany. The Frenchman has shown that he can be one of the riders to get in the mix of Vialle and Geerts who have been keeping things tight this year. Benistant was also on the box in Loket last year and won the second race, so that should also give him a nice confidence boost.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder is another rider to look out for as he made his third podium appearance a couple of weeks ago in Samota-Sumbawa. Längenfelder clearly has what it takes to battle at the front, and it would be nice to see him do just that this weekend.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf will also be another possible podium threat and it will be interesting to see how much progress he has made since Indonesia which was his second GP back from injury.

Marek and Leok Crowned EMX85 and EMX65 European Champions in Riola Sardo

RIOLA SARDO (Sardinia) 18 September 2021 – The deep sand of Riola Sardo saw the finals of the EMX85 and EMX65 European Championship finals today, with Vitezslav Marek of Czech Republic victorious in the EMX85 category, while in the EMX65 class it was Estonian Lucas Leok who took home gold.

The 85cc and 65cc youngsters were tested by the Riola Sardo circuit here in Sardinia but took on the challenge without hesitation as they got a taste of what it feels like to race an FIM Motocross World Championship circuit.

EMX85

In the first EMX85 race it was Lotte Van Drunen who led the way with Janis Martins Reisulis second, followed by Amaury Maindru and Douwe Van Mechgelen.

Vitezslav Marek was making quick moves on the opening laps and got himself up three positions in one lap to move into third.

Reisulis was keeping things close to Van Drunen who looked at home in the sand and was more than comfortable in the lead. The Latvian rider made several attempts to pass the Dutch girl, but was unable to do so.

The battle between the pair went on for most of the race, while Marek was right there too. Though with four laps from the end, Reisulis dropped to third which allowed Marek to chase the win.

While Van Drunen had pulled a nice lead and it looked like she was close to getting her first EMX85 race win, Marek had other ideas. The Czech rider pushed hard and in the last two corners made the most of the back markers and got around the leader to steal the win in the final moments. Marek was the winner, Van Drunen finished second and Reisulis was third.

As the gate dropped for race two, it was Dean Greogoire who led the way as he was followed by Sandro Sols, Markuss Ozlins, Gyan Doensen and Marius Adomaitis.

Ozlins then took the lead early on, while the title contenders Reisulis, Van Drunen and Marek started the race further down the field and were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

The trio then moved up a position and the chase for the win was on. Doensen then set the fastest lap of the race as he brought the gap down to him and Ozlins. But on lap three there was a change for the lead as Reisulis got himself out in front.

Doensen then dropped another position as Van Drunen went through as she pushed to stay with Reisulis and Marek, while the Czech rider took second from Ozlins.

Halfway through the race, the top three was Reisulis, Marek and Van Drunen as the trio fought for the title. Latvian Reisulis was able to edge out and focus on his own race to take the win and finish 6.072 seconds ahead of Marek and Van Drunen.

With a 1-2 result Vitezslav Marek repeated his success from 2019 when he won the EMX65 title to win the EMX85 European Championship ahead of Janis Martins Reisulis who was second with 45 points, followed by Lotte Van Drunen who was third with 42.

Vitezslav Marek: “My emotion is very fantastic because this is my first official year in 85cc class and I am very happy about it because in Greece for the Junior World Championship I was second which was sad but now I am first and I am happy”.

EMX65

In the opening EMX65 race it was Moritz Ernecker who got a good start ahead of Viktor Leppälä, Andrea Uccellini and Storm Maymann. Junior World Cup winner Aaron Katona struggled from the beginning as he was caught in a crash in the first turn.

Leppälä then took the lead, while Lucas Leok was charging through the field as he got himself into second early on. It did not take long for the young Estonian to take the lead on the second lap.

Leok then led Leppälä, Michal Psiuk and Dex van den Broek who was applying the pressure onto the Polish rider. Meanwhile further down the field Katona was making good progress in the first few laps as he got himself up to eighth and was pushing for more. Eventually he finished sixth.

The lead then began to decrease, as young Lucas Leok was coming under more pressure from Leppälä. In the end it was Leok who was victorious, with Leppälä second and Van Den Broek third.

In the second race it was van den Broek who led the race, as Katona crashed on the opening lap once again. van den Broek led Leok, Ernecker and Sleny Goyer.

van den Broek was looking strong in the lead as he managed to pull a gap of 3.528 seconds at one stage of the race, though Leok was not going to make it easy for the Dutch rider.

Psiuk was also looking strong as he kept with van den Broek, Leok and Leppälä.

In the end van den Broek was able to get his head down and edge out over the rest as he finished the race 13.009 seconds ahead of Leok who settled for second while Leppälä was third.

With a 1-2 results, Lucas Leok won the EMX65 European Championship with 47 points, as Dex van den Broek was second on 45 points and Vitkor Leppälä joining the pair on the podium for third overall!

Lucas Leok: “I am very happy and I still don’t realise what I did. I want to thank my mum and dad and my sponsors for the help”.

MXGP heads to the ‘Island of Sport’ for the MXGP of Sardegna!

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 15 September 2021 – This weekend, the FIM Motocross World Championship heads to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia for the 10th round of the series.

This will be the first time that Riola Sardo will host official races of the FIM Motocross World Championship, though the circuit itself is very familiar to the paddock, as many of the teams take part in some famous pre season races there, as well as spending much of the off-season putting in laps on the sandy circuit too as it is the perfect facility for winter training and testing.

Riola Sardo is located in the province of Oristano, west of Sardinia close to archaeological sites and the beautiful seaside.

Sardinia is known as the ‘Island of Sport’, a campaign that was recently presented by the Councillor of Tourism in Sardinia Gianni Chessa. Despite the tough pandemic situation, the regional administration has given maximum effort in promoting international sports and bringing the best athletes from all over the world to the breath-taking island.

The FIM Motocross World Championship is among many incredible sports to take place in Sardinia, including the Volleyball World Championship Under 21, Junior Sailing Championship as well as the World Paddle Tour just to name a few.

The track itself is a typical sand circuit, with the sand very particular as despite any rain or water the ground gets dry super quickly. In comparison to other sand tracks, such as Lommel, Riola Sardo is not as deep as ‘the toughest sand in the world’ but is known as ‘Le dune’ because of its natural and very suggestive landscape.

While excitement builds for the MXGP and MX2 races this weekend, these are not the only races that fans will be able to enjoy, both in person and on TV. In addition to the World Championship races, the EMX65 and EMX85 riders will also line-up in Riola Sardo after missing out on the opportunity to race with the MXGP and MX2 riders in 2020.

The official Race Program of the event can be downloaded HERE!

Things are really heating up in the MXGP title chase, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings is now within touching distance of the title. While he may be fourth in the championship, he is only 34 points down on the series leader Tim Gajser of Team HRC.

And with two consecutive Grand Prix victories for Herlings in Turkey, this is like adding fuel to the already fired up Bullet who is keen not to let the title slip away this time around.

Of course, for Gajser the focus for the next races will be to enjoying his racing and keeping his challengers at bay and maintain a healthy lead over Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team as well as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, Herlings and Jorge Prado who are right on his tail and looking to pounce at any given opportunity.

While Herlings may have had the best races of the title contenders in Afyon, both Cairoli and Prado were dealt their own misfortunates, with Cairoli crashing during the Bitci MXGP of Turkey and Prado going down at the Bitci MXGP of Afyon, which put the riders out of podium contention on those occasions, though they still managed a podium each nonetheless, just not at the same time.

For Cairoli and Prado the races in Riola Sardo will be like spending time at their local playground as the team spent much of the wintertime training here on the island and putting in the laps at the sandy circuit.  For Prado the next races will be vital to keep close in the championship as he lost quite a few points in Turkey.

These upcoming races will be special and very important for Cairoli as he chases the 10th world title for the final time. The Sicilian announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of the season, so no doubt we will see more incredbile moments from the 9-time World Champion over the next GPs.

But of course they are not the only ones familiar with the track so really it will be a test of who can master the deep sand better – of course favouring good sand riders such as Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis who has always performed well in the sand, take Oss and previous years in Lommel for example.

For Romain Febvre this upcoming Grand Prix will be another opportunity to get back on the podium and stay close to Gajser, as he has not won a race or been on the podium since Lommel.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, Glenn Coldenhoff and Ben Watson will aim for better results in Sardinia, following two gruelling GP’s in Turkey, which didn’t bring the results that the team or riders had hoped for. For Seewer getting top results was going to be tough anyways as he continues to battle through Epstein Barr Virus.

All three, much like the rest of the paddock, spent some time putting in laps in Riola Sardo during the winter, so it will be interesting to see if they can turn things around for round 10 of the series.

MRT Racing Team KTM’s Alessandro Lupino as well as SM Action Racing Team’s Alberto Forato will hope to put on their best performance for their home race, while Forato will look to repeat his strong results from Turkey once again and get into the top 10 on this occasion too. Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team's Ivo Monticell might miss out on the races in Riola Sardo due to shoulder injury.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux currently holds a comfortable 49-point lead over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who will be looking to strike back this weekend. For Guadagnini the track of Riola Sardo is among his favourites and a circuit he hopes to perform well on and claim back some vital points to stay close with Renaux who had some very nice battles and race wins in Turkey just over a week ago.

It will be interesting to see whether we will see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle steal the show with Renaux as they battle for the win again, or whether Guadagnini, or the likes or Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton and Kay De Wolf could get involved.

Both factory Husqvarna riders have mounted the podium on several occasions this year, on an array of terrains, but for someone like De Wolf, the sand is of course his strong point. The young Dutchman has been riding really well this season and it would be great to see him back on the box in Riola Sardo, as he is no doubt one of the favourites thanks to his sand riding skills.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts will need some good points this weekend if he wants to stay within contention of the title. Much like last year, Geerts has struggled with making some mistakes in the last few GP’s. Though the Belgian has had some top 10 finishes, though it’s not what he needs if he wants to keep the championship dream alive. Geerts, being a Belgian, is a strong sand rider so the track conditions in Riola Sardo should be very well suited to him and hopefully it will be the race we see him fight at the sharp end of the field.

A rider who has been edging closer to the podium is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Rene Hofer. While Hofer has performed better this season on the hard pack circuits, take Orlyonok, Matterley Basin and Turkey for example, it could be great to see the Austrian continue this into the second half of the season as he gains strength to battle with the leaders.

While Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez will be keen on using the upcoming races to re-group for the second part of the season, as in most recent races he has struggled with consistent results. The Spaniard started strong in the beginning of the year and even had the red plate after the races in Great Britain but from that moment on things have failed to go his way. It would be good to see Fernandez back at the front and putting in some solid results and scoring good points.

This weekend will also see the return of F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk who will line-up for the first time since his injury. Van de Moosdijk has always been a very strong sand rider so it will be interesting to see if he’s close to 100%. Meanwhile his teammates Mathys Boisrame and Mikkel Haarup will be aiming for top results once again.

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 361 points; 2. Mattia Guadagnini (ITA, KTM), 312 p.; 3. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 290 p.; 4. Jed Beaton (AUS, HUS), 266 p.; 5. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 261 p.; 6. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 251 p.; 7. Rene Hofer (AUT, KTM), 244 p.; 8. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 237 p.; 9. Tom Vialle (FRA, KTM), 227 p.; 10. Mathys Boisrame (FRA, KAW), 216 p.;

MX2 - Manufacturers Classification: 1. Yamaha, 402 points; 2. KTM, 386 p.; 3. Husqvarna, 300 p.; 4. Kawasaki, 280 p.; 5. Honda, 259 p.; 6. GASGAS, 206 p.;

EMX65 AND EMX85 CHAMPIONSHIPS’ FINALS CANCELLED FOR 2020

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 27 April 2020 – Infront Moto Racing regrets to announce that due to the global COVID-19 pandemic the 2020 European Championships EMX65 and EMX85 are cancelled.

The finals of the EMX65 and EMX85 championships were set to take place at the popular Loket circuit in Czech Republic, with many of the European youngest talents due to gather for another fantastic weekend of racing. Unfortunately, due to the current global situation, this will not be possible in 2020 as most of the EMX65 and EMX85 events were supposed to run in spring/summer and can not be re-scheduled in autumn due to the school calendar.

This also means that the Women’s European Championship (WEMX) will no longer take place in 2020 either.

The Chairman of FIM Europe Motocross Commission, Eddie Herd, added: It was a difficult decision to make but I firmly believe it is the correct one. Most of the EMX65/85 zone rounds and the WEMX rounds have already been cancelled and there will be no certainty that the Finals in Loket would go ahead as scheduled, thus we had to consider that there was only a small window to re-schedule the Finals because of school holidays. We also had to consider the financial impact for the families of the riders, many of whom are suffering a huge lack of income due to the lockdown in most countries and this would have severely affected the number of entries. I believe we will come back stronger in 2021 and we will offer the first choice of the zone rounds and the WEMX rounds to this year's organisers as a priority. For the remainder of this year, Infront Moto Racing and the FIM Europe will concentrate on EMX125, the EMX250, EMX2T and the EMX Open classes as soon as travel for the riders across the borders and without restrictions will be possible.”

Infront Moto Racing along with FIM Europe have not taken this decision lightly but look forward to an even bigger and better championship in 2021. We kindly ask you all for a great deal of responsibility and understanding as we all tackle this difficult time.
