FEBVRE IN MXGP AND L.COENEN IN MX2 DOMINATE THEIR RAM QUALIFYING RACE ON THE NEW TRACK OF ARNHEM

ARNHEM (The Netherlands) 19 August 2023 – What a first day racing on the sand track of Arnhem for the RAM Qualifying Races of the MXGP of The Netherlands. Riders acclimated quickly to the new track and showed great speed along with an amazing show

In MXGP, it was Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre who showed lot of control and good speed to win while Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen emphatically won the MX2 RAM Qualifying Race.

Along with the MXGP and MX2 classes, the first races of EMX250 and WMX took place on Saturday and were won respectively by VRT KTM Factory Juniors’ Ferruccio Zanchi and Lotte Van Drunen.

The Paddock Show followed the RAM Qualifying Races with the winners of the RAM Qualification Races and the MX2 Red Plate Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo Dutch Heroes also came on stage making the home crowd excited with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga and 2022 WMX World Champion Ceres 71 Racing’s Nancy Van De Ven, Lotte Van Drunen and Fantic Maddii Factory Racing’s Lynn Valk

The MXGP RAM Qualifying Race started intensely right from the gate drop with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer taking the best start in front of his teammate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Romain Febvre followed them closely while battling between each other. Prado got the best of Febvre on lap 1 of 12 but between lap 2 and 3 they exchanged position a couple of times showing great skills on this demanding track of Arnhem. Finally, Febvre who was 3rd, pulled away from Prado on lap 3.

In the meantime, Coldenhoff who pushed hard to keep Febvre at bay, managed to charge Seewer and took the lead on lap 3. The Swiss got threatened again but this time by the Frenchman who made a strong move to go 2nd on lap 4. The race got even better for Febvre who was looking comfortable as he made a decisive pass a lap later on Coldenhoff to take the lead, and set the fastest lap of the race along the way. From then on, no one could match Febvre’s pace and he flew to victory.

Prado overtook Seewer on lap 5 to go 3rd and kept racing smoothly until he decided to go the 2nd place and Coldenhoff. Coldenhoff had to deal with a late charge from Prado over the last couple of laps but in the end the Dutch rider stayed 2nd to start his Home Grand Prix very well. Prado settled for the 3rd place while Seewer who started the race perfectly had to concede few places and finished 4th.

Behind the front four riders, Team HRC's Tim Gajser started well in 6th position and move past Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass in the opening lap to go 5th. Gajser showed good riding all way through and even got close to Seewer at the end although he had to settle for 5th. Jonass crashed in lap 4 and picked himself in 13th where he finished in the end.

SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato did very well to climb up the ranks after finding himself in 9th after the first lap. Forato showed that he got the skills to fight as he quickly passed Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers and Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández to move up to 7th on lap 3. He then capitalised on Jonass’ misfortune to finish 6th in the end. Fernandez rode solidly as usual to get to 7th. Bogers found himself 8th on lap 4 and probably thought that he would get a promising 8th place on his home Grand Prix until De Baets Yamaha MX-Team’s Benoit Paturel who was behind him for most of the race found the way to get a successful manoeuvre to pass Bogers on lap 11. Paturel finished 8th in the end while Bogers ended at the 9th place.

Still riding to get back to his best, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux had to battle from the 12th place on lap 1 to enter into the points. Renaux managed to get 10th in the end in front Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Mitch Evans who had a positive race going from starting 15th to finish 11th.

Home rider and fans favourite, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings unfortunately injured himself in Free Practice and will have to sit out his home GP.

The other home rider Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen started well as he was riding within the top 10 in the opening lap until his bike failed him and had to retire from the race.

Romain Febvre: “I’m super happy because the day didn’t start as planned. I was training this morning and I knew if I would get a good start I would be in the flow with the other ones and that’s exactly what I did. I was third on the start and played with Prado a bit and made the pass until the lead. I was feeling comfortable so let’s go for tomorrow.”

The MX2 RAM Qualifying Race began from the best of manner for home rider Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga who took the lead. Lucas Coenen rapidly placed himself in 2nd place in the opening lap after overtaking his twin brother, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen. L.Coenen showed amazing control throughout the whole race and got close to Elzinga. The Belgian then went for the high line in a turn while Elzinga got the commanding line in the middle. L.Coenen went off track momentarily and avoided to crash. However, L.Coenen never gives up and came back on the charge a few laps later on lap 6 of 12 to make this time the pass stick and take the lead. L.Coenen kept going without looking back and won the RAM Qualifying Race.

S.Coenen who was 3rd crashed on lap 3 and retired from the race. For Elzinga, his 2nd spot got under threat by the ever-present Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder who overtook the good performer WZ Racing Team’s Oriol Oliver earlier in the race. Laengenfelder went full gas to powerfully overtake Elzinga on the straight and close him magnificently in the next turn. Laengenfelder finished the race at an excellent 2nd place. Unfortunately for the rookie Elzinga, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Evertsfelt good on this track as he kept pushing until the end while he was 4th. Everts got dangerously close and both riders nearly collided in a turn but fortunately narrowly avoided each other. On lap 11, Elzinga made two mistakes on two jumps and struggled to keep his balance which was a golden opportunity for Everts to pass him and finish 3rd. Elzinga still managed a very good 4th place.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts who were coming back from injury that he sustained in Finland showed all his fighting spirit and great talent. Geerts first overtook Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo on the opening lap to go 8th and then pass for 7th, another returning rider on lap 2, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk. Geerts was cruising in 6th place behind Oliver (following S.Coenen’s crash) and kept riding smoothly to find a way past the young Spanish on lap 10 and finish at an encouraging 5th place. Oliver finished 7th in the end.

MX2 Red Plate Adamo didn’t find his usual flow as he hovered around the 8th spot throughout the race but capitalised on the unfortunate crash of JM Honda Racing’s Camden Mc Lellan who was riding very well in 7th place until lap 10. Adamo salvaged a 7th place and 4 points in the Championship while Mc Lellan finished outside the top 10 in 13th place.

Riding at home Van De Moosdijk stayed consistently within the top 10 and managed a good performance for his return with the 8th place in front of a good Team Ship To Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Emil Weckman who got the 9th place. F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo rounded the top 10 in the end gaining a couple of position during the race.

Lucas Coenen: “The race was quite tough because the track was really rough, even more than Lommel so it was going to be a technical and physical. It was not easy to pass Elzinga and I tried once but he run me wide but the second pass was good. First race done and tomorrow will be racing day!”

TV COVERAGE: HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF THE NETHERLANDS

ARNHEM (The Netherlands) 18 August 2023 – The sixteenth round of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship is arriving in Arnhem this weekend for the MXGP of The Netherlands.

This Grand Prix promises to be one of the most epic of the season. In MXGP, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings will be keen on showing that his recent injury is only a distant memory, after his 5thand 4th place at the GPs of Finland and Sweden. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff has shown great consistency and character in recent weeks, finishing on the podium on several occasions. For his part, Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen has often been able to spring a surprise when least expected. Not forgetting Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers on his Honda, also capable of playing spoilsport at the top of the standings. In the MX2 class, as usual Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga will be defending his podium chances with no hang-ups, while in the women's category, Lotte Van Drunen has not said her last word and still has hopes of climbing to the top of the WMX classification. As for Fantic Maddii Factory Racing’s Lynn Valk, the podium remains within reach for the Fantic rider.

As it has done in a solid partnership that has lasted since 2017, the Dutch National Public TV NOS will be LIVE and ON SITE throughout the weekend, covering the races. Also, there will be a large worldwide LIVE coverage, which includes CBS Sports Network, Automoto TV la chaine, RAI Sports, Sport TV Slovenia, Moji, Stan Sports and more.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of The Netherlands, as well as the 26min Behind-the-Gate magazine featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

Rick Elzinga – Pushing for a Podium

Heading into this weekend’s MXGP of The Netherlands, local rider Rick Elzinga of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team will be fired up to get on the podium. The Dutch rider, who sits in 10th place in the MX2 Championship is coming off two solid performances in the last two rounds of the World Championship in Scandinavia.

In Sweden last weekend, he put together his best race of the year and in race one, but then struggled somewhat in the second race. Unfortunately, he came very close to making the podium and no doubt, he will have one eye on the box in Arnhem this coming weekend.

“I had a good weekend,” Elzinga said. “In the first race, I just missed out on getting the holeshot. I was third around turn one and stayed there for the whole race. I think I could have ridden a little bit better if I was more relaxed rather than thinking about saving P.3, but it’s still a personal best, so I am happy with that. In the second race, I don’t know what I did. I think it was the worst start of my life. I pushed hard to come back, even though I had problems with my goggles, pretty much straight away and it was very difficult to make passes. I finished on the same points as third, so I was really close to the podium, but there are still plenty of chances left to get there, and I am really happy with the progress I am making.”

At the Grand Prix of Finland, it was another strong performance with sixth overall and again, his day was mixed with good and bad starts, but the most important element of his weekend was that he had the speed of the top riders.

"A nice result. I keep taking steps forwards. I was however ill all week, including fever. I felt it at the end of the first moto, when I had no energy left. Although, after a bad start – too much wheelspin – I managed to move forwards. The second moto was much better: a solid start, and I quickly came up to P2. I managed to keep up in front and my lap times were good. I’m really happy about that. The gap to the winner was a lot smaller than usual. Just keep working hard and then I’ll see what is still possible this season."

So, now, onto his home Grand Prix and with a massive crowd expected and perfect weather, wouldn’t it make for a perfect home-coming if he can finish on the podium for the first time in his rather young Grand Prix career.

MXGP GEARS UP FOR THE MXGP OF THE NETHERLANDS IN ARNHEM FOR THE FIRST TIME

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 16 August 2023 - The 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship arrives in The Netherlands and will discover a new venue in its history in Arnhem for the sixteenth round of the campaign.

The MXGP of The Netherlands comes back to the MXGP Calendar after 2021. Arnhem is a sand track that many riders would know as an ideal training facility although the context will be different in competition mode.

Along with MXGP and MX2, the EMX250 and WMX will compete this weekend in their 8th and penultimate round respectively this season. In EMX250, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi is the Red Plate Holder with 2 Round wins and 7 podiums out of 7 rounds. Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan leads the WMX by 20 points after winning the last 3 rounds.

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado kept his good form and his large advantage in the Championship thanks to his Race win putting him on the third step of the podium along with the RAM Qualifying Race victory in Uddevalla. Coming in Arnhem on a sand track will be certainly an advantage for the Red Plate to get even closer to the mighty Title.

The winning streak of Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre came to a stop but the French rider still managed an excellent second place in Sweden which confirms even more his impressive form in this second part of the season. He is still 98 points behind Prado and with 4 GP to go, time does not play in his favours.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer finally got his second GP win of the season with a solid weekend in Sweden. His famous fast starts helped him a lot at Uddevalla to clinch the victory and take his 11th FOX Holeshot along the way to take the lead in that competition in front of Prado.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff didn’t perform as he would have loved to in Sweden as he finished 9th overall and lost precious points to his victorious teammate Seewer in the Championship for the 3rd place. He will surely take the opportunity of racing at home in The Netherlands to give everything and chase after the victory that eluded him so far this season.

Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández managed to come back to compete in Sweden after his crash in Finland and managed a good 8th overall given the circumstances with two top 10 finishes. He will be able to raise his level again this weekend in Arnhem.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen was quieter than usual in Sweden as for the first time of the season he didn’t finish in the overall top 10. His home GP in Arnhem will definitely give him an extra boost from the support of the Dutch fans to bounce back.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings performed very well in difficult conditions in Sweden to get a good and encouraging 4th place overall which is the perfect timing for him to get his home Grand Prix in the Netherlands. The ‘bullet’ is going to have an immense amount of support from the Dutch crowd who will all come to get a glimpse at the recordman in Motocross Grand Prix wins.

Team HRC's Tim Gajser keeps building his fitness and rhythm as he finished 10th overall in Sweden but finished 5th in race 2. Gajser will definitely want to prove that he can be back riding at the top in The Netherlands and maybe even eying a podium.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux has signed his highly-anticipated comeback in Uddevalla and didn’t take long to put his print in the race as he clinched the 3rd place in Race 2 to get an excellent 6th overall. With a back-to-back Grand Prix, it will be interesting to see if Renaux can get a momentum and starts to fight for podiums straight away.

Home Rider Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers is 15th in the Championship and will also be competing in his home GP. Bogers will hope to better his season’s best finish in Flanders where he managed to get 9th overall. No doubt that the support from the Dutch fans will help him in that quest.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo had two very different races in Sweden as he got tangled in the start in race 1 to finish 10th while he took a better start in race 2 to then made his way to the top and fly to victory. He got onto the 3rd step of the podium and kept a good margin on his first pursuer and teammate Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts.

Liam Everts was very solid as he went 2-3 for 2nd overall. He also got a back-to-back podium and gained points on Adamo along the way which will definitely make it interesting for the last GPs. Everts also gets more comfortable and relaxed as the season goes on which will be an advantage for the end of the season.

While Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts and Thibault Benistant along with the two Dutch riders from Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Kay de Wolf and Roan Van De Moosdijk are out of the competition for now, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder who is 4th in the Championship is simply performing at his best as he finally managed to get a second Grand Prix victory to his name this season in Sweden with strong ridings. It is now 5 podiums in a row for Laengenfelder who really found the switch to find himself at the top week in week out.

For the 7th in the Championship, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen the MXGP of Sweden was literally one to forget after crashing in Time Practice and suffering from a concussion that prevented him to line-up in the RAM Qualifying Race and the Sunday racings. L.Coenen will hope to be back this weekend.

F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo who is 9th in the Championship nearly got it right in Uddevalla which was nearly like a home GP for the Norwegian. He was leading MX2 race 2 but got overtaken and his bike failed on him which made him miss out on his first podium. However, Horgmo showed great speed and will get other chances of podium if he keeps riding that way.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga will be the first home rider in the MX2 Championship Standings that will compete in Arnhem and will be getting a lot of support. Following his season’s best finish in Sweden in 4th position, the young Rookie has improved consistently since his return from injury.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen is also getting better consistency which helped him to get his MX2 career’s best MX2 finish I 6th overall. S.Coenen made some costly mistake which denied him so far to get closer to a podium finish but if the young Belgian reduces these mistakes he will have all the talent to get podium finishes regularly.
