MXGP is delighted to continue the running of the FOX Holeshot competition through the fifth round of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship season together with MXGP Partner FOX.

The MXGP of Portugal was hel in Agueda and it was Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who clinched his 6^th  FOX Holeshot in Race 1 while Monster Energy Yamaha factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer got the FOX Holeshot in Race 2.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts and Monster Energy Yamaha factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer took the FOX Holeshot in Race 1 and Race 2 respectively.

The way it works is that 1 point is awarded per MXGP and MX2 Championship race. The first rider who crosses the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner will be given a point. At the end of the season the 2 riders - one per category - with the most FOX Holeshot points will win a mega prize.

AGUEDA (Portugal) 30 April 2023 – What a fantastic MXGP of Portugal as we witnessed greatness on the track of Agueda.  The fifth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship delivered what a fantastic show in both MXGP and MX2 classes with the new inverted circuit that allowed riders to go full gear and enjoy the new layout. 

At the end of the day it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who won the GP with his second overall win of the season and his 101 GP victories to join Stefan Everts’ record. Behind him in second was Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre who got his second podium of the season and on the third step of the podium, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who keep his 100% podium record this season.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts signed a hat-trick with a perfect 1-1-1 as he won the MX2 Ram Qualifying Race on Saturday and the two races on Sunday. This was in front of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who kept his consistency and de Wolf’s teammate Roan Van de Moosdijk in third for his first podium of the season. 

The day was marked by a large and noisy crowd who came in number in a beautiful and hot day to cheer on riders and especially on Ruben Fernandez and Jorge Prado who gave them a lot to be happy and loud throughout the whole weekend. This enthusiastic public made this Grand Prix of Portugal a very special one for the 2023 season. 

In Race 1, it was Jorge Prado who clinched yet another FOX Holeshot and led the race from start to finish as he keeps his way to take off on first races to win them. Romain Febvre came out after the first turns in 2^ndposition and even tried to push to get close to Prado but in the end Febvre settled for a good 2^nd place while Prado won the race. 

Jeffrey Herlings got a good start too as he found himself in 3^rd early in lap 1 to then control his race and comfortably finished 3^rd in the end even if he pushed Febvre in the last laps, but couldn’t make a pass. The two teammates at Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team, Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff had somewhat of a similar race as they both push to gain positions. Coldenhoff was 7^th on lap 1 but gradually moved up to 5^th right behind Seewer, then pushed behind to finally pass the Swiss for 4^th on lap 9. 

It was another solid performance for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini as the Italian got to 7^th on lap 2 after getting passed by Coldenhoff. Guadagnini then capitalised on Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez mistake on lap 8 to get back up to 6^th. While he pushed to overtake Seewer later in the race, he had to settle for 6^th in the end. Fernandez who looked quick and confident this weekend and was pushing for 3^rd behind Herlings made a mistake and fell down to pick himself up on 7^th position where he stayed until the checkered flag. 

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen kept impressing on during his outings as he rode within the top 10 the whole race and overtook SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato on lap 14 for 8^th and kept this position while Forato settled for 9^th. The other consistent rider was Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod who once again got a top 10 finish with 10^th. 

Second in the Championship standings before the MXGP of Portugal, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux continued his bad luck for this weekend as he went down early to manage a 13^th place.

In Race 2, it was Seewer who clinched the FOX Holeshot while Fernandez took on the lead quickly after that in front of Herlings. Fernandez looked to really suit and like this track as he found good lines throughout the whole weekend but Herlings was ready to go on the chase and finally let his famous speed do the talking as he moved past Fernandez for the lead in lap 5.

Herlings was not going to give up his 101th win and formidably won without looking over his shoulder. Fernandez, after winning the RAM Qualifying Race also showed his growing strength to finish 2^nd.

Febvre was also on a mission to get a podium today as he chased after Seewer for 3^rd over many laps. Febvre then found the right time to make an excellent move with a jump on the inside of Seewer to get to 3^rd and never give it up until the end. Seewer showed his fighting spirit as he bounced back from his 11^th place in Trentino to go 5-4 for a good 5^th overall place.

Vlaanderen kept his strong performances again in race 2 to finish 5^th and overtaking the Championship leader on lap 5 for 5^th when Prado nearly fell completely off his bike in front of the pitlane and miraculously stayed on two wheels. Prado showed his qualities in salvaging this mistake. Vlaanderen finished the race in 5^thdefending until the end in front of Prado who finished 6^th. 

This was another good and needed quality race for Coldenhoff who didn’t get overtaken once and managed to overtake Guadagnini for 7th on lap 16. Guadagnini settled for 8^th but showed another decent riding with a good 6-8 and 8^th overall after his 5^th place in Trentino. Similarly, Coldenhoff showed his qualities as he got the 7^th overall. 

Guillod again with a top 10 delivered some good moves to get from 11^th on lap 1 to 9^th in the end as the Swiss looked on a great form recently. Finishing in 10^th was JM Honda Racing’s Brent van doninck who after having to retire in race 1 while he was 10^th due to mechanical issues went on to show that when he has no problems, the Belgian is a rider that can ride easily in the top 10.

For Renaux, it was a Grand Prix to forget as he never found his rhythm during the weekend and settled for 11^thfor a 11^th overall which was a bad operation as he dropped to 3^rd in the Championship Standings

In the end, Jeffrey Herlings showed again the qualities that made him famous and delivered a big message to the competition as he is the first rider this season to get to 2 GP wins. Second was an excellent Romain Febvre who is getting back to his best while Jorge Prado continues the season with the Red Plate and the fifth podium in a row. 

Jeffrey Herlings:”It was so great to come here and have another win after the long road came from. I feel it’s coming step by step. I am so pleased with the performance today, riding felt great and if I didn’t feel at my best on the first race, the second was really good. I am looking forward for next week in Spain and see what we’ll get there.”

Romain Febvre: “It was really close racing the whole weekend. I felt very good and took some good starts too. In the first race being second during the whole race behind Prado was good and in the second race I managed to pass few riders to get the second place overall. I’m very happy taking some points for the Championship and now let’s see in Spain what I can do”

Jorge Prado: “I feel like I rode pretty well the whole weekend. My second start was really good but then I nearly fell and had to regroup. I couldn’t pass Vlaanderen even though I tried hard. In the end I am happy with my riding and my fitness and I want to thank a lot my team and next week in Spain we’re going for the win.”

In MX2 race 1, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo started well as he got the FOX Holeshot and led Jago Geerts. Adamo kept the lead with a safe distance although Geerts came close after few laps but could not get close enough to make a move on Adamo. Adamo restored a 2 seconds cushion until lap 15 when Geerts decided to pounce for the lead. Geerts got on the inside and powered through to stay in front Adamo. Geerts with 3 laps until the end comfortably kept his distance with Adamo for the win. Adamo settled for the 2^nd place. 

Behind them was Kay de Wolf who managed to start well and got to 4^th on lap 1. Then his teammate, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen who was in front of him fell down on lap 3. This helped de Wolf to moved up to 3^rd until the end. L.Coenen managed to get back up to 9^th after picking his bike up in 12^th showing his quick pace. Their teammate, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk had a solid run as he managed to get a good start and finding himself 6^th on lap 1 to 4^th in the end. 

After an uncharacteristic average start Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder made a good comeback as he was 8^th on lap 1 but overtook F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s David Braceras early on the race for 7^th. Laengenfelder then capitalised on the crash from L.Coenen as well as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant on lap 3 to move up to 5^th where he stayed until the end. 

Benistant did not have a good race as he lingered around the 12^th place throughout the race and finished 13^thin the end. However, TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar continues to be in the top 10 as he clinched the 6^th place in the end.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga showed his speed and that he can fight positions after getting 11^th on lap 1. Elzinga went on to move up to 7^th in the end as he overtook Team Ship To Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Emil Weckman on lap 4 for 8^th to then get to 7^th after pressuring F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s David Braceras and move past him on lap 8. Elzinga finished 7^th while Weckman settled for 10^th and Braceras for 11^th. 

Mikkel Haarup also run a solid race as the Danish went from 13^th on lap 1 to 8^th in the end and never got overtaken throughout the race. 

In race 2, Laengenfelder was the quickest off the starting gates as he clinched the FOX Holeshot but it was Geerts who took the lead after few turns. Geerts went on to win race 2 in great fashion finishing a perfect day. 

Laengenfelder was 2^nd until lap 14 when de Wolf and Van De Moosdijk overtook him one after the other. With a 4^th place in the end Laengenfelder missed the podium by 4 points and got 5^th overall. De Wolf made a great comeback going from 7^th on lap 1 to finish 2^nd in the end and get to the second step of the podium while Van De Moosdijk finished 3^rd to get his first podium of the season in 3^rd position. 

Adamo continues to show his qualities as he finished 5^th with a solid 2-5 to end up 4^th overall. Behind him was F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo who following his 12^th place on race 1, went on to make a run in race 2 after a good start finding himself 8^th on lap 1 and making some great move to go up to 6^th in the end. L.Coenen had another scare when spun out after few turns and found himself 17^th after lap 1. 

But as he showed it before, his great speed helped him to get to an incredible 7^th place in the end.

Benistant got a better rhythm in race 2 but far from his standard as he could not do better than 8^th in the end while his teammate Elzinga managed to get to 9^th and reach two top 10s for the day. Jan Pancar is now getting used to be in the top 10 since the beginning of the season as he managed to get to 10^th after finding himself 15^th on lap 1. He showed a very good determination to move up the leaderboard. 

After his recent podium, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts had some bad luck today as he completely got out of the track following a collision and had to retire in race 1. Although Everts managed to get a 11^th place in race 2 after another early crash. His teammate Sacha Coenen is still getting his fitness and rhythm back after his injury and managed to get a 16-15.

Jago Geerts: “Yesterday I felt already very good on my first laps. I knew it was going to be a good day and today I felt even better. I am so happy with results with another 3 wins. It was simply the perfect weekend for me and now I’m going to focus on the next races and trying to keep going like this”

Kay de Wolf: “It was a tough weekend from the beginning but It was a really good second race although I didn’t have the best start but I kept working. In the end I overtook Simon (Laengenfelder) and my teammate Roan to put me second overall. I gave all my heart to get to the podium again”

Roan Van de Moosdijk: “After a really tough pre-season I am so happy with that performance and podium. In the second race I knew I had to pass Laengenfelder for the podium. It’s been a long road and I’m so happy to be here on the podium with my teammate. Thanks to my team and we got the ball rolling now for the next races.”

AGUEDA (Portugal) 29 April 2023 – Here we are in Agueda after an incredible day of tough competition during the RAM Qualifying Races. The last words went to Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez in MXGP and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts in MX2.

The newly inverted circuit of Agueda delivered the speed and spectacle we thought and more! Riders acclimated themselves quickly to the new layout to go full gas from the get go. 

Alongside the FIM Motocross World Championship races, the EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing competed in their first race of the weekend in which Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi and MJC Yamaha Team’s Janis Martin Reisulis came out victorious in their respective class. 

The RAM Qualifying Races were followed by the now inevitable Paddock Show and was full of fans coming to cheer the riders and especially hero Ruben Fernandez who gave them the win that all locals were waiting for. Among the guests were Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen along with MXGP Red Plate Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and MX2 Red Plate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts. There was also a special guest as Hugo Basaula, home hero, came on stage to welcome the public to Agueda. The fans kept asking for more and even made few ‘Holas’ along the way during the show. The Paddock Show concluded with riders giving signed posters to ecstatic fans who came in large numbers.

For the first time this season, Ruben Fernandez won the RAM Qualifying Race and he did that in great fashion as one of the fans’ favourites here in Portugal rode a sensational race. After finding himself early on behind quick starter Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Fernandez showed a lot of nerves on lap 4 as he made a move on the inside of Herlings to push him wide and take the lead off the ‘bullet’. Fernandez went on to display a strong performance even if he had to stays focus until the end with a late charge from Herlings who settled in the end for 2^nd.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen took a great opportunity as he managed to finish 3^rd of the race. He overtook Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod on lap 3 to get to 5^th.  He then capitalised on the fall of Jorge Prado, 3^rd at the time, who lost the front of his bike on lap 5. Vlaanderen then passed Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux on the same lap for 3^rd and kept this place until the end. 

Renaux had to retire few laps later with a mechanical problem making him lose precious points foir the championship. 

Prado who found himself down to 11^th after his fall went back up to 6^th a couple of laps later to get right behind Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre. Febvre who also fell earlier in the race at the same spot as Prado, had to defend his 5^th place in front of the Red Plate until the very last turns, Febvre and Prado who both made a great comeback finished in 5^th and 6^th respectively. 

After a great start, Guillod who was 4^th on lap 1, got passed by Vlaanderen on lap 3, and then could not keep his position as he moved down the order throughout the race to 10^th in the end. It is still a good point for the Swiss in the Championship to keep him 11^th. 

The other Swiss rider Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer showed how quick he can be when he races without incident as the 2022 Vice MXGP Champion found himself 7 after lap 1 but overtook his countryman Guillod on lap 6 for 5^th and kept going as he took advantage of Renaux’s misfortune to get to 4^th and keep that position until the chekered flag. 

The other riders who showed very good promises for tomorrow were JM Honda Racing’s Brent van doninck and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who were 10^th and 11^th on lap 1 respectively. Both riders showed great confidence as they kept pushing to move up positions. van doninck managed to capitalise on Prado and Renaux mishap to get to 7^th on lap 7 and kept his place until the end while Guadagnini 10^th on lap 7, showed an amazing determination until the end as he overtook Guillod and Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers over last couple of laps to finish 8^th. 

Bogers on his side was able to get from 9^th on lap 1 to 5^th on lap 7. Unfortunately, with few riders putting pressure behind him such as Prado and Febvre, the dutchman had to concede few places to end up to the 9^thposition in then end but still display a strong performance throughout the race.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff did not have the best day as the rider could not find the same speed and rhythm he showed since the beginning of the season and had to settle for the 15^th place in the end.

Rubén Fernández: “It was difficult to not to make mistake at the end. I did some mistake as I was trying to overtake Jeffrey Herlings but I managed to keep the lead even if he pushed me right until the end. I’m so happy to get my first RAM Qualifying Race”

In MX2, it was Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder who got the best start in front of Jago Geerts. The Red Plate looked very comfortable on this new layout and show great speed and control as he overtook Laengenfelder on lap 3 to never look back and win comfortably the RAM Qualifying Race. Laengenfelder also stayed without much trouble at the 2^nd place until the end. 

We witnessed a battle between teammates at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing with Liam Everts and Andrea Adamo for the 3^rd place. Everts quickly got to 3^rd as Adamo managed to overtake TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar on lap 2 for 4^th. A great battle ensued and it was Adamo who got the last word on lap 8 as he closed down Everts on a turn. Everts nearly fell following that move from Adamo but incredibly kept himself on the bike. Adamo went on to finish 3^rd while Everts 4^th. The two on-form teammates continue to display strong racing. 

Another pair of teammates, Roan Van De Moosdijk and Kay de Wolf from Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing also marked some important points as they managed to both gain places throughout the race to finally got together on lap 10 in 5^th for Van de Moosdijk and 6^th for de Wolf. 

Pancar is a rider that we are beginning to see a lot in the top 10 as he started very quickly to find himself 4^thafter lap 1. Although he couldn’t keep that position and had to concede few places along the way, the Slovenian managed to stay strong and finish 7^th in the end. 

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant has somehow a little bit underperformed compared to his usual standards that he showed us since the beginning of the season. Benistant got to 8^thafter Lap 1 and went up and down during the race to settle for 8^th in the end, being overtaken by his rival in the championship de Wolf on lap 6 as he was 7^th to move down to 8th where stayed in the end. 

The good operation of the day was for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen who after crashing over the first lap of the race made a very worthy comeback as he managed to get back to 9^th quickly on lap 4 and never left this position until the end. 

Behind him was Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Jack Chambers who showed that he is getting acclimated to the level of the MX2 Championship since his debut in Switzerland. Chambers got to 7^th on lap 1 and showed that he doesn’t give up easily after moving down to 11^th on lap 3. He got into a give and take situation with VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting for 10^th and the American finally made the move sticks on lap 6^th to stay 10^th and collect 1 good point for the Championship Standings. Gifting unfortunately crashed on lap 9 and finished 25^th.  

The other misfortune was for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga who got an issue with his bike and tried to continue after a passage to the pitlane but he then had to retire on lap 8 in what had to be a frustrating for the young Dutch.

This was the debut of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen after his injury in pre-season. While he went down on lap 2 and found himself down to 23^rd position, S.Coenen managed to gain few place and finish the race 20^th getting a full race under his belt which will be valuable for next races.  

Jago Geerts: “I felt very good all day. I managed to pass Simon and then pushed to stay first. So overall a very good race for me and I am looking forward for tomorrow”

Dear MXGP Friends,

As we are finalizing the preparation of the Grand Prix of Portugal it is also the time for the April edition of the MXGP Magazine.

During this month, we finally went back to Switzerland, on the typical and historical track of Frauenfeld. It was definitely a great success with more than 30.000 fans that attended the event during the weekend. It was also the occasion for MXGP to reconnect with the Swiss fans, as it was some years that a GP didn’t take place there. Monday racing program was live on the Swiss National television and the President of the Swiss congress of the States honored us with her presence. On the racing side, it brought a new GP winner in the Premier class with Maxime Renaux and in MX2 Thibault Benistant won the Grand Prix.

The week after Easter, the MXGP moved to a classic Grand Prix, one of the most breathtaking places in the calendar, Pietramurata, next to the Lake of Garda. Here again the public answered the call despite the absence of Tim Gajser and all the Slovenian fans that usually come for this race. In the MXGP class, Jorge Prado won his first GP of the season and brought a fourth different overall winner in four Grand Prix! It shows how the MXGP class is open this year and how the general level has risen the last couple of seasons. On the other hand, Romain Febvre is getting his pace race after race, and with Jeffrey Herlings, Maxime Renaux and Jorge Prado, we have four riders in 40 points. In MX2, Andrea Adamo made the Italian fans go crazy with his first ever Grand Prix victory, on his home soil. Here again, with Jago Geerts leading the championship but having only 30 points ahead of the top 5, the season will continue to rise new highs!

It is also very good to see the different starting grids full of participants from the beginning of the season in all the classes. The new system of qualification for the MXGP class with the wildcard riders is working great and the adjustments on the age limit for the EMX250 from 23 to 21 years old improved also the participation in MX2. We continue to improve and fine tune the pyramid system of the talents, which was put in place more than a decade ago to facilitate the road to the MXGP class.

Finally, Agueda will bring a lot of novelties, as the track has been completely rebuilt and we will race the opposite way this weekend of what we were used to race in the past. This weekend will also host the EMX125 and EMX250 series. All the Grand Prix will be broadcasted on MXGP-TV.com as usual and you can stay connected on our different Social Media platforms to stay close to the action!

Today, many riders kicked-off the MXGP of Portugal with a Media Event arranged by local organisers who brought them to the Nucleo Museologico de Macinhata do Vouga in Agueda. Mayor of Agueda Jorge Almeida was present to welcome everyone on-site.

This was an amazing opportunity for riders present such as Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini, Red Bull GASGAS Fatcory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder, MRT Racing Team Beta’s Ben Watson, MRT Racing Team Beta’s Alessandro Lupino, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, Andrea Bonacorsi, Ivano Van Erp and Karlis Reisulis all from the Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team, MJC Yamaha Team’s Janis Martin Reisulis, amongst other to connect with the past through the stunning historical motorbikes and trains. They were able to learn about the history and memory of the region and its community that is associated with the railway identity and culture until today.

The event started with a photo of the riders present amongst the historical bikes displayed in front of the museum. Then the tour began as riders and team managers were ushered into the main room to visit and admire the remarkable centenary machineries. 

Following the tour, the jovial atmosphere led to the Coenen brothers and Mayor of Agueda Jorge Almeida, to take a spin with the antique bikes. A truly memorable experience for people on-site.

The event followed by a welcoming and thankful speech from Jorge Almeida who was really happy to be welcoming MXGP into Agueda. Riders and the Mayor then took an improvised family photo across the train tracks in front of the museum and the event concluded with a lovely tasting of local delicacies to end this beautiful and joyful moment.

With this amazing moment finished, the racing may now start with riders focusing on an important racing day. We can expect to be a sensational Grand Prix with a lot of challengers ready and capable to win in Agueda.
