MXGP Mag #103 David Luongo – Editorial

Dear MXGP Friends,

I would like to start my editorial by sending my big thoughts to all the people who are touched directly by the current situation in the eastern part of Europe. At our very humble level, I would like to spread the message that sport should always be used for uniting people and not dividing cultures. Sport has always been a symbol of peace and sharing of good philosophy.

The season started in Great Britain at the beautiful track of Matterley Basin. When we had to publish the final calendar in December 2021, it is important to remind that UK was the only country in Europe that was giving us the guarantee to host public without limitation, as many other countries were still under restrictions. Despite the difficulties that obliged us to postpone the GP to the following week due to storm Eunice, the British Grand Prix was a great success as we had a great crowd, good weather and great races! Mantova came a week after and confirmed that the season will be very disputed and very open in MXGP. Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado have the speed of winning races, but Maxime Renaux started his MXGP career with class, already competing for the win, too! The comeback of Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre in the upcoming weeks will add even more competition between all those champions. In MX2, a great surprise is coming from Germany, with the discovery of the talented Simon Längenfelder who won his first Grand Prix in Great Britain. Here again the title will be very disputed among many talented riders like Jago Geerts, Kay De Wolf, Tom Vialle, Andrea Adamo and Simon Längenfelder.

As I am writing those lines, we are packing the last flight cases for Argentina. We will go back to this beautiful destination of Villa La Angostura for the third GP of the season. We were missing the overseas Grand Prix that give the real flavours of the MXGP World Championship. For sure, it is challenging to travel abroad with the impact of Covid-19, but it is very important for the fans of South America, Asia and Middle East to take the MXGP to their countries. We suffered a lot the miss of those GP’s during the last 2 years, and we are very happy to be back. The last GP of the season will bring us to Oman for the first time before flying to RedBud for the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations that promises to be epic!

The beginning of the season brought some good news on the TV coverage of the MXGP as well. We were very happy to announce during the GP of Lombardia our new agreement with Stan Sport TV which gives the possibility for the Australian fans to follow to whole championship live. It is a new step on the path of the comeback of the GP in this amazing country of motocross enthusiasts. Then we also announced the signing of a two-year agreement with Teledeporte in Spain, one of the most followed free-to-air television channels in the country. It will give a fantastic visibility to our sport in Spain. And for those who prefer to follow the action whenever they want, we continue to improve and develop our OTT platform www.MXGP-TV.com where you can watch more that 7 hours of live at every GP.

Finally, I would like to thank FIM, FIM Europe, all our organizers, the MXGP partners, the teams and the riders for their collaboration.

See you in Argentina!

Record Entry List for the 2022 Yamaha YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 16 March 2022 - Infront Moto Racing and Yamaha Motor Europe are delighted to announce a record number of riders have registered to contest the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup in 2022. 395 young riders will race Yamaha's YZ65, YZ85 and YZ125 motocross bikes in 21 countries across Europe, as they compete for a place at the prestigious YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale, which will take place this year at the MXGP of Charente Maritime in St Jean d’Angely, France from the 19th-21st of August.

The YZ Cup series has increased in popularity season on season. 2022 promises to be more competitive than ever with the number of entries increasing by 20% compared to 2021 and riders registering from countries as far afield as Australia and Paraguay.

The riders will compete throughout the season in their respective national championships, with points counting towards their standing in the YZ Cup. The top 40 riders from each of the three classes will be invited to race alongside their sporting heroes during the MXGP of Charente Maritime, the final European round of the 2022 FIM MXGP World Championship, at the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale.

The top three finishers together with two wildcards from each class at the SuperFinale will earn a place at the Yamaha bLU cRU Masterclass, an exclusive two-day event featuring expert tuition from Yamaha's factory MXGP and MX2 riders.

At the end of the Masterclass, one YZ125 rider will be awarded a fully supported ride in the European Championship, emulating 2021 winner, 16-year-old Frenchman Adrien Petit, who this year is racing for the JK Racing Yamaha EMX125 Team. In addition, one rider from each of the YZ65 and YZ85 categories will receive support and GYTR parts for their 2023 season, just like last year's winners, 11-year-old Dane Bertram Thorius and 13-year-old Swiss rider Noe Zumstein.

Registration is now closed for this season, but registration for the 2023 edition of the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup will open on the 18th of August 2022.

David Luongo, Infront Moto Racing CEO: "The YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup made a new step in popularity last year with the fantastic promotion of the SuperFinale in Mantova. This year will mark a new step in the globalization of this series with riders from countries like Paraguay and Australia registering their interest! As a promotor, it is very rewarding to see such investment from a manufacturer into the young generation, especially in the so important 65cc, 85cc and 125cc categories that are the base of the pyramid of motocross talents. I would like to thank Yamaha Motor Europe, Mr. Eric De Seynes, Paolo Pavesio and Alexandre Kowalski for their great collaboration with MXGP!"

Paolo Pavesio, Marketing & Motorsport Director, Yamaha Motor Europe: "Since its inception in 2015 we have seen consistent growth within our bLU cRU program, and this year is no exception A record number of more than 390 young riders from 27 countries have chosen to race in the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup in 2022, taking advantage of a program that not only nurtures the future stars of tomorrow but also offers them a structured, professional pathway to the very pinnacle of the sport. Even more satisfying is the fact that we are now attracting interest from overseas countries, such as Paraguay and Australia, extending the reach of the bLU cRU program far beyond European borders. Of course, for Yamaha, the YZ Cup series is not just about competition, it's also about providing a once in a lifetime experience for these youngsters, and memories that will remain with them forever. I wish everyone the best for what promises to be an exciting 2022 season and I look forward to meeting them in France at the 2022 SuperFinale."

MXGP Excited for the Return of MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 15 March 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship heads overseas for the first time in 2022, as the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina returns in Villa La Angostura.

Villa La Angostura is a resort town on Nahuel Huapi Lake in Patagonia based in the Neuquen province. It’s known for its Alpine-style wooden buildings, beautiful mountains, lakes and forests that surround the area and for much of the paddock, the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina is among the top favourites on the racing calendar.

The MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina first made its appearance on the MXGP calendar back in 2015, with the inaugural event won by Max Nagl and Dylan Ferrandis in MXGP and MX2. Meanwhile the last time that MXGP was hosted in Villa La Angostura, was 2019 and that time around it was Antonio Cairoli and Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who were victorious after going 1-1 in MXGP and MX2.

This year will be the sixth time that the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina will take place and as it stands Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass have the most wins in Villa La Angostura, with two apiece, but with Herlings out with injury and Jonass having issues with his stitches post-surgery, this leaves Gajser with the chance to and claim the third victory and take the number one spot.

In MXGP, all eyes will be on Tim Gajser who will aim to keep his winning streak and make it three on the bounce, after Grand Prix victories in Matterley Basin and Mantova. Gajser is a favourite heading into the third round, and will no doubt be aiming for a clean 1-1 result which he is yet to achieve this season and having won in Argentina previously in 2017 and 2018 will hopefully be an added boost of confidence and motivation for him.

Of course, as always, we can expect previous rounds’ podium finishers Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer to be right there at the front challenging for the win.

Prado has consistently been fighting at the sharp end in the first races and his starts have been a huge advantage for him – something that is bound to come in useful again in Argentina. Meanwhile Seewer started his 2022 campaign with a podium in Matterley Basin, but had a tough weekend in Mantova, a track where he claimed his first ever MXGP Grand Prix win. Though after the difficult results in Lombardia, he will be more fired up than ever to bounce back and put it on the box.

And lastly, Renaux has turned heads by claiming his first qualifying race win on his first outing in the premiere class in Great Britain and then followed that up with his first podium just two GP’s into his rookie season in Mantova, which he will be aiming to build upon and fight for a spot with the winners again this weekend.

A face to look out for this weekend is Beta SDM Corse rider Jeremy Van Horebeek. The Belgian currently sits eighth in the world championship standings after two top 10 overall finishes in the first two rounds. In 2019, Van Horebeek was third on the box next to Cairoli and Gajser, so a strong finish this time with Beta is not out of the picture.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers came close to a spot on the podium in Mantova, for the first time since his MX2 days. He placed fourth overall and I

it would be nice to see if he can carry this momentum and deliver a solid result and finish inside the top three.

DIGA Procross KTM Racing Team’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Team HRC’s Mitch Evans were among podium finishers in Villa La Angostura back in 2019. The duo finished second and third on the MX2 podium which will bring back nice memories for them.

This year, Olsen gave a glimpse of what’s to come in Mantova, especially the second race as he made his way up the order to fourth. Meanwhile Evans is continuing his comeback after injury and is still building to finish inside the top 10.

There’s still no news on when Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre will make their return.

2. Tim Gajser 44 pts

3. Jeremy Van Horebeek 35pts

In MX2, there is a new championship leader in the form of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had the perfect weekend in Mantova, going 1-1 and claiming the red plate for the first time since 2020. He is among the top favourites for this weekend, but there is also Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who is a big threat. The German is second in the standings, just four points behind Geerts and after missing out on a spot inside the top three in Mantova, Längenfelder will be wanting to get on the podium again and follow up his incredible performance in Matterley Basin.

But all eyes are likely to be on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle as everyone is eager to know how the Frenchman is, after his huge off in Lombardia and what the consequences of that could really be or whether he just got lucky. This season everyone expected Vialle to dominate from the get-go and that has not happened which is making things a lot interesting in the title chase. The MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina is a chance for Vialle to take the reins once again, but he will need two clean races in order to maximise points and move up from fourth in the standings.

Other riders in that chase are Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf, who has consistently fought at the sharp end and SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery rider Andrea Adamo who is still on the high of securing his first ever MX2 podium and doing so on home soil.

Other big threats include F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo who has stepped it up this season as he made his return to the MX2 category. Horgmo placed eighth overall in Great Britain and followed that up with fifth overall in Lombardia, which shows that he is building for that top three score and it could be coming this weekend.

There to challenge him, as they have been in the first two GP’s are Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup, Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee’s Isak Gifting and Ship to Cycle Honda SR’s Stephen Rubini. Currently they stand eighth, ninth and tenth in the standings and have been right there inside the top 10 during both races so far.

Honda 114 Motorsports Hakon Fredriksen has been building too. He finished his first MX2 Grand Prix in 14th while Mantova was much better for him, where he was sixth behind Horgmo.

Meanwhile for Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini is yet to show some strong results in 2022. His first two GP’s were far from what he may have expected and it is not entirely clear why the Italian has been struggling so much. But a new weekend is a new opportunity to bounce back and get on the right track, as we all know what Guadagnini can do, last season was a great example of that.

MXGP and 6D Helmets Renew Partnership with Multi-Year Deal

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 14 March 2022 – Infront Moto Racing is delighted to continue the successful partnership between MXGP and 6D Helmets with a multi-year agreement in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

6D Helmets is a Southern Californian helmet manufacturer with a mission to “provide the public with superior safety helmets from both a technological and design perspective” and “continually challenge our company to improve its technology and lead the marketplace with innovative solutions”. The brand launched in 2011 and is widely known for their revolutionary patented Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) technology which embodies a fully active, in-helmet suspension and kinetic energy management system that is used across their range of helmets.

Their name, 6D, is in reference to the engineering term 6 Degrees of Freedom, which refers to the ability to move 3 dimensionally in space about the Cartesian coordinate system of X,Y and Z, including rotation about each axis.  Their Omni-Directional Suspension system utilises this term to maximize its ability to absorb and mitigate energy.

In 2022, the brand is supporting Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing Team’s Arminas Jasikonis and Calvin Vlaanderen along with Hostettler Yamaha’s Valentin Guillod as well as the Bud Racing Kawasaki Team and SKS Husqvarna squads.

With the multi-year deal, MXGP and 6D Helmets aim to maximise the brands visibility in the international market, ensuring that they reach out to the worldwide loyal motocross fan base. Infront Moto Racing is excited to be a part of it and look forward to more successful years with 6D Helmets.
