Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP & MX2 Teams Look Fast & Furious in 2022

When the gate drops, the talking stops and with the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship fast approaching, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams are revved up and ready to get the new season underway. Back with a familiar yet strong line-up in 2022, both teams are looking fit, fast and motivated for the new MXGP season, which will kick off at the spectacular Matterley Basin venue in Winchester, England, next weekend.

As announced in 2021, the reigning MX2 World Champion Maxime Renaux has moved up from the 250cc class, MX2, to the 450cc class, MXGP. The 21-year-old 'Power Rookie' was drafted into the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team at the end of 2021 and is poised to race a YZ450FM inside the premier class alongside his new teammates Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff.

Seewer will again spearhead the charge in MXGP. The five-time FIM Motocross World Championship silver medalist hopes to build on the same Grand Prix winning form he showed at the end of last season. "The MXGP class will be super tough again this year as well, so my goal for 2022 is to get the best out of myself at every single race to be on the podium as much as possible" he explained, "I feel like I'm on a level at the moment I've never really been before so this sounds yeah good to me, but you know after, we will see the competition because nobody ever sleeps they all improve!"

Seewer's search for World Championship glory will not come without a challenge from his highly acclaimed teammate Coldenhoff, who is also motivated to collect more pieces of podium silverware. "The ultimate goal has always been the same," the Dutchman said, "I live to win. For sure it's difficult, I mean if you look at the field you know it's very very competitive, but I think the most important thing is to stay consistent be all the time up there every single weekend that's with only one goal, and that's to win."

As for the rookie, Renaux has quickly become the posterchild of Yamaha's strong strategy to develop the next generation of MXGP champions from within its own ranks. The young Frenchman has been with Yamaha for more than a decade and has secured two world titles on his way up to the very top of the Yamaha Racing pyramid. "It's really nice to be a Factory rider in my rookie season in 450," he smiled, "I really love the bike and the behavior of the engine really suits my style so I can be more clean and more safe and secure on the bike. I think I'm going to make a big step and I will make a big improvement this season again."

Last year was one for the history books for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team, as they enter their 25th year in blue this season. The team won their first-ever MX2 World Championship with Maxime Renaux in 2021 and became the first-ever Yamaha team to secure the gold and silver medals inside the MX2 World Championship in the same season. As a result, Yamaha also successfully defended the Manufacturers' world title.

Back for more in 2022, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team has retained its young stars Jago Geerts and Thibault Benistant. As one of the most decorated riders in the lower capacity class, MX2, with 53 top-three race finishes, 20 races wins and 27 podiums to his credit, Geerts enters his fifth season with Yamaha and the team determined to achieve the goal of winning the World Championship. "I'm really determined to do well this season," he reaffirmed, "I'm in really good shape physically and I feel good on the bike, so I'm looking forward to the new season. I was second in 2020 and second in 2021, so for sure, I want a little bit more this year and hopefully I can make it happen."

Completing Yamaha's Factory line-up after an impressive rookie season where he celebrated a maiden podium finish and two race wins, Benistant is excited to keep progressing up the ranks in MX2. "I feel really good on the YZ250FM" he expressed, "the more I ride with this bike more I feel good so it's nice. In 2022, my goal for this season is to be more consistent, more on the box and to take some good starts."

Motocross fans don't have long to wait for racing action to commence; the MXGP and MX2 riders will line up for the first Grand Prix of 2022 next weekend. Each class will have two practice sessions and a qualifying race on Saturday 19th February, followed by two championship races on Sunday 20th. Join us on Yamaha Racing's Official social media platforms, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.

Managing Matterley Basin 2022

There is no doubt, a bunch of riders in the MXGP class will arrive at the Matterley Basin circuit in less than two weeks’ time with the goal to get through the weekend, but also gain some momentum and confidence for the future rounds of the 2022 MXGP championship.

With two of the 2021 major players out of the picture in round one (Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre both recovering from injury), that does open the door for others, names like MXGP rookie and 2021 MX2 World champion Maxine Renaux, new Kawasaki factory signing Ben Watson and of course, the young and sensational Jorge Prado of the Red Bull GasGas Factory team.

While these riders are all preparing for battle, the team personnel are all looking at what they can do the make sure their riders have success in England, and in fact, for the whole 2022 season.

Of course, the big favourite in England will be four-time World motocross champion Tim Gajser and with Herlings and Febvre out of the running for a GP win, Gajser and his HRC team expect big things early in 2022. Marcus Pereira de Freitas the HRC General Manager can’t wait to get up and running.

“It is great to have both Tim and Mitch under the awning this year,” Pereira de Freitas said. “They are both working really hard to be ready again for the new season. The break was very short from the end of the 2021 campaign so it has been a very busy period and I must thank everyone in Team HRC for continuing to work hard to make sure we are all set for the first gate drop. Tim always does the work necessary, both with bike testing and his own physical training so I always trust him to do exactly what he needs to do. Mitch has been back in Europe for a little bit now and all the reports have been positive and now we get to test with him before the first MXGP and that will give us an idea of where he is. We know it won’t be easy as the level has risen since he last raced but he is very determined, and we will make sure he has everything he needs to get back to top of the class. It sounds like we are going back to a two-day format, which I think is good for the sport, so we need to be ready for that, but overall, I think Team HRC is in a strong position for 2022.”

Antti Pyrhönen of the Kawasaki factory team is excited for his rider, Ben Watson, who will enter Matterley Basin with some pressure as the leading British rider in 2022. Pyrhonen though knows that with the right support Watson can be a force at the top end of the MXGP class, as he showed last weekend in a French International.

“Ben was riding well all day,” Pyrhonen said. “Especially in the last race he showed what he can do, and we are really happy with a good feeling. These races are really important as we acquire more knowledge of both the bike and Ben, and it’s important that he can build his confidence with good results. The mind-set has to be that these pre-season races are part of the training programme. We knew from the past that Lacapelle is quite tacky at this time of the year, so it was good training for the first GP at Matterley; the track there also has many ruts and is very technical. “

While Jeffrey Herlings will miss the opening round of the series, he could be back soon after, or at least that is what we all hope. His team’s technical man Dirk Gruebel is excited for that return, because KTM have done a lot of work on the bikes for 2022.

“It’s all change for this season,” Gruebel said. “Not only with the rider line-up for Red Bull KTM but also the new SX-Fs. We are also still dealing with the situation of Rene’s loss and having two racers instead of three. However, the goals remain the same and when we look at the potential of both Jeffrey and Tom and the work, they have done in the off-season then we are confident. MXGP gets going pretty early in the year and we should have the flyaways again after missing out for two years. We know it will be a long season, but it will be good to get back to a normal way of racing.”

After the injury to Herlings, Red Bull KTM team manager Joel Smets was bitterly disappointed and just hopes his rider can come back when 100% fit and continue his work from the 2021 season, when he picked up his fifth World motocross championship.

“Of course, this is very disappointing for Jeffrey,” Smets said. “Also, for the team and the championship. Trying to look at the positive side the injury is not as complicated as his foot problem in 2019. The operation took some time, but everything went well, and we hope Jeffrey can be out of a cast in less than two weeks and can even start some light training such as swimming and some other activities. Then we’ll have to see how he recovers to plan his GP return.”

So now with just 10 or so days before the team trucks roll into Matterley Basin, you just know all the riders, mechanics, team managers and team personnel are working over-time to give their riders the upper hand.

Husqvarna Factory Racing MX2 Excited to Start 2022 Season

Kay De Wolf and Roan Van De Moosdijk successfully complete pre-season testing ahead of their first race of the year.

Lacapelle-Marival, France, will be the setting for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing MX2's first competitive outing of the year. Kay de Wolf and Roan van de Moosdijk will race the annual pre-season international on their FC 250 machines this coming weekend, in an effort to gather more valuable information ahead of the opening round of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship on February 20.

Kay de Wolf returns to Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing for his sophomore year in the MX2 class; he will strive to build on a successful rookie season in which he stood up on the Grand Prix podium four times. A maiden moto victory at the Grand Prix of Flanders-Belgium was the highlight of his rookie term and helped him secure a final result of seventh in the championship. De Wolf has been with Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing since he first stepped onto the TC 125 three seasons ago.

Roan van de Moosdijk joins de Wolf beneath the awning in what will be his first season aboard the FC 250, an exciting change of scenery for the former EMX250 champion. Van de Moosdijk has fully recovered from the injury that sidelined him for a majority of the previous season and is excited to add more moto victories to his tally – he won a race during his rookie season in the MX2 class, 2020, and has six career podiums to his name.

Kay de Wolf and Roan van de Moosdijk will race at Lacapelle-Marival on Sunday and then complete their preparation at another pre-season event, Hawkstone Park in the United Kingdom, one week later. The 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship will begin with the Grand Prix of Great Britain, held at Matterley Basin, on February 20.

Rasmus Jorgensen (Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager): “It has been an extremely short and intense pre-season leading up to the start of this year. We are very much looking forward to going racing with our new bike and colours. The process of Roan joining the team has been very smooth, and both he and Kay are loving the new bike. They have both done excellent work – I am excited to see them in race action this coming Sunday at LaCapelle-Marival. Huge thanks to all of the Nestaan team members and to the hard-working people at the factory in Mattighofen. Let's go racing!”

Kay de Wolf: “This has been a short pre-season, of course, but it has also been really good. Roan and I have been doing a lot of motos together in Spain, which has made us both a lot stronger. I think that we are ready to show the world just how much work we have put in during the wintertime! I am excited to get back behind the gate at LaCapelle-Marival this weekend, then it is not long until the MXGP season begins.”

Roan van de Moosdijk: “I can confidently say that this has been my best pre-season preparation ever. Everything clicked with Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing straight away; the bike is amazing and the people are so nice to work with. I have enjoyed the month that we spent in Spain a lot and cannot wait for the first pre-season race this weekend. I am really looking forward to getting behind the gate on my FC 250 for the first time!”
