Fox Holeshot Films – MXGP of Great Britain

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 29 June 2021 – MXGP is thrilled to continue the Fox Holeshot competition, that is running throughout the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship season, together with MXGP partner Fox.

How does the competition work?

During both MXGP and MX2 races, the rider who crosses the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner will be awarded 1 point. At the end of the season, the 2 riders, one per category, with the most Fox Holeshot points will win the mega prize!

During the MXGP of Great Britain, we saw four different riders dominate the starts to each receive the Fox Holeshot plate at the end of the race! In MXGP the award went to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre. Meanwhile in MX2, it was race one winner Maxime Renaux of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing and DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who were the fastest out of the gate and into the Fox Holeshot first corner.

As it stands, Jorge Prado leads the Fox Holeshot classifications in MXGP with two points with Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre on one point each. Meanwhile in MX2, Tom Vialle, Rene Hofer, Maxime Renaux and Simon Längenfelder are all tied on a single point.

Cairoli and Renaux bounce back to take overall victories in Matterley Basin

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 27 June 2021 – The MXGP of Great Britain has delivered once again, with awesome action in both MXGP and MX2 races that saw different winners in each heat for both categories.

While rain was forecasted for the entire day, this did not stop a healthy crowd of British fans make the trip to Matterley Basin to enjoy some of the most exciting racing that we have had this season so far. And what a show the riders put on for the cheering crowd that lit the whole track alive, making for an incredible atmosphere that MXGP missed by the entire paddock in 2020.

In MXGP all eyes were on Antonio Cairoli of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing who bounced back in incredible fashion, following an unlucky GP in Orlyonok, going 1-3 in the races to secure his 6th GP win here in Matterley Basin. Joining him on the podium was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing who put together another solid day to get himself on the podium.

In MX2, Maxime Renaux of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing was determined to make up for lost ground in Orlyonok and he did just that with a win and a second to secure his career second overall victory. Mattia Guadagnini of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing placed second overall during what was his second Grand Prix as a factory KTM rider and Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez continued his podium streak to finish third.

In the opening heat it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who grabbed the Fox Holeshot with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Cairoli closely behind. Though Cairoli wasted no time as he jumped into the lead, while Gajser was fighting further down the order.

On the opening lap it was Cairoli, Prado, Glenn Coldenhoff of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing and Herlings, with Seewer, Gajser and Pauls Jonass from Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing just behind.

A few laps later, Gajser had managed to get around Seewer and was closing in on the back of Herlings, while Seewer was coming under more pressure from Jonass. And so was his teammate Coldenhoff, who lost two positions in one lap to Herlings and Gajser as the pair went after Cairoli and Prado.

On his return to MXGP racing, Arminas Jasikonis of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing had a tough opening heat, as he eventually pulled into the pits to retire from the race.

With 2 laps to go Cairoli stretched out his lead to 8.731 seconds over Prado, with Herlings, Gajser and Coldenhoff completing the top 5, as Romain Febvre from Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team chased down Jonass.

In the end it was Cairoli who secured his first race win of 2021, with Prado 2nd and Herlings 3rd.

In race two it was Febvre who grabbed the second Fox Holeshot, though much like in the opening heat, Cairoli was quick to get out in front.

The opening lap was exciting, with Prado taking the lead from Cairoli and then Febvre doing the same as Gajser got himself up into third.

Seewer then lost a position to Herlings who took 5th from the Swiss. Prado also lost another position, this time to Gajser as he got up into second and then it was game on as the Slovenian rode patiently behind Febvre for most of the race.

Gajser worked away at the gap lap by lap and towards the end of the race he was right on Febvre’s tail. Cairoli kept up with the leaders and at one point it looked like both Gajser and Cairoli were in for the chance of stealing the race win from Febvre.

The last two laps of the heat were intense, as Gajser and Febvre traded positions, with Gajser eventually able to make a pass on the Frenchman stick, on the final lap, and edge out slightly to take the chequered flag.

Cairoli topped the podium, with Gajser second and Herlings third. Febvre ended up fourth overall just 2 points off the podium.

Heading into the third round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, Tim Gajser continues to lead with 93 points, as Jeffrey Herlings sits second in the championship standings just 15 points behind and Romain Febvre is third a further 5 points back.

Antonio Cairoli: “Actually, I enjoyed race two more because it was nice with all the passing, and it was nice to be back battling. In the first race I had a really good start and immediately after a few corners I made my way into first place and then pushed as fast as I can. Of course, I was disappointed with last week. I was really not happy about this mistake; we lost a lot of points but of course today was very good and I really enjoyed the track. I ran short of breath during the second race in the last 4 laps, the guys were pushing hard. It was easy to make a mistake, so I thought let’s bring it home and make this 93rd GP victory happen”.

Tim Gajser: “It was a good Sunday of racing. I enjoyed it a lot. This year they prepared the track a little different, especially in the first race. With Romain and Tony also behind we had a nice race and in the end, I managed to pass Romain on the last lap so it was good”.

“Maggiora is a historical circuit so I’m really looking forward to going there next week, hopefully the weather will be nice, and we will have some nice races”.

Jeffrey Herlings: “It’s our goal this year. We used to go out and try to win but I just want to be on the podium, and it has shown in the past that when you are on the podium almost every weekend you can keep close to the championship. First race was alright, the second race same, nothing impressive, I just don’t have the speed yet, I can do a good lap, but I still struggle with race speed. I’m not far off but I don’t want to throw it away in the beginning. I just want to keep racing and get better and improve week by week”.

In race one, it was Renaux who took the Fox Holeshot as he edged out ahead of Isak Gifting of DIGA PROCROSS GASGAS FACTORY RACING and F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame. Thibault Benistant of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing was keen to move forward as he got himself into 3rd, with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’ Jed Beaton getting off to a fantastic start in 4th as he pushed Benistant.

Meanwhile Geerts struggled down the order as he was 12th, though he managed to get back up into 7th by the end of the race.

Benistant remained one of the fastest riders out on track as he was pushing to catch Boisrame and Renaux, while also fending off Beaton. Beaton then crashed out of 4th and eventually came into pitlane before retiring from the heat.

Benistant then crashed also, dropping from 3rd to 5th. At that point Renaux had pretty much controlled the race but things got interesting behind him as Fernandez and Guadagnini were having a strong fight for third.

Guadagnini was applying the pressure as he clocked fast laps, lap after lap, though Fernandez was able to respond and that’s when the pair caught up with Boisrame who was second. Fernandez went after Boisrame and was able to make a pass on the corner before the finish line, for the perfect photo finish.

Renaux was the race winner, with Fernandez and Boisrame 2nd and 3rd.

In race 2, it was Simon Laengenfelder of DIGA PROCROSS GASGAS FACTORY RACING who secured the Fox Holeshot. Though he didn’t hold the lead for long as Guadagnini and Rene Hofer from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing were quick to jump into P1 and P2.

Fernandez didn’t have the best start as he began the race in 11th.

Guadagnini then edged out from the rest of the field as Boisrame went after Hofer with the pair having a close battle. Hofer did a great job of fending off the Frenchman, though some laps later Boisrame was able to find a way through into P2, before making a mistake and crashing. He re-joined to eventually finish in 7th.

Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing was another rider to crash and had to restart from the back.

Race 1 winner, Renaux was keen on getting back in the action and chase a podium spot as he worked his way up the order as he caught up with Roan Van De Moosdijk of F&H Kawasaki Racing and then Hofer.

5.929 seconds separated Renaux from Guadagnini, as Geerts finally found his way up into the points. And as Renaux was looking like he was working away at the gap to the race leader, Guadagnini responded quickly to keep the gap healthy.

In the end it was the #101 of Guadagnini who won his first ever MX2 race, while Renaux was 2nd and Hofer 3rd.

A 1-2 result gave Renaux the overall win, while Guadagnini got his first taste of a World Championship Podium and Fernandez made it two in a row with a 3rd overall.

With Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle not lining up for today’s races due to injury sustained during the week, Ruben Fernandez has taken the championship lead, 5 points ahead of Maxime Renaux who is 2nd and Mathys Boisrame who sits 3rd on the same points (74).

Maxime Renaux: “I had really good races, we worked with the team to make progress on the starts, and I actually took the Fox Holeshot in race one so I’m happy about that. I had some consistent races, so I’m very happy about the weekend”.

Mattia Guadagnini: “It’s amazing. I just felt really good and really enjoyed racing here, really like the track and also good feeling on the bike, didn’t’ get the best time this morning but I did a good start and first race. I know the start is important and I took a good start, I was second and passed for the lead in the first lap. I just enjoyed the racing, I made my race, and I got the win, so I’m really happy about that. It was an amazing weekend”.

Ruben Fernandez: “I’m happy. To get the red plate is just awesome. I didn’t expect it so just to have it is unbelievable. The day started well with pole position, but I made my races really difficult with two bad starts. In the first race I was able to get second place after a last corner pass on Mathys Boisrame and also, I had a good battle with Mattia Guadagnini and I felt the pressure from behind so I knew I had to push. In race two, was difficult with the start and then I made a mistake on the first lap. I got sixth in the second race, and I was expecting more. It was a tough day but I am on the podium and with the red plate so just have to keep working”.

All roads lead to Matterley Basin this weekend for the MXGP of Great Britain

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 23 June 2021 – The 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship continues this weekend with the MXGP of Great Britain, round two of the series!

MXGP will return to the valley of Matterley Basin in Winchester, for what will be the 11th British Grand Prix to be held at the hardpack venue. Matterley Basin is one of the favourites on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar not only for the riders who look forward to racing there every year, but also the fans who can enjoy unobstructed views of the entire circuit.

The Orlyonok circuit one week ago kicked-off the MXGP season with a bang and with plenty of battles, now the heat will be brought to Great Britain as the riders continue what they started in Orlyonok.

Alongside the MXGP and MX2 categories, joining us for the first time this year will be the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 riders for their opening rounds of the 2021 campaign.

The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing category will see some familiar faces return for another season in the popular two-stroke category, with the likes of Valerio Lata from MRT Racing Team KTM and Haakon Osterhagon of Fantic Factory Team Maddii back once again after finished 9th and 10th respectively in 2020.

Others to look out for at the European Championship opener includes Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Ivano Van Erp, Karlis Alberts Reisulis and Ferruccio Zanchi, along with local heroes Bobby Bruce, Bailey Johnston, Ollier Colmer and more.

While the EMX250 is stacked with young talent, and it will be an intense season for the title hopefuls. Making the move to EMX250 this season is last year’s EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Champion Andrea Bonacorsi, who will look to impress on his Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing machine, along with Liam Everts who will look to put his bad luck of last season behind him and add another win in Matterley Basin, after topping the EMX125 podium at the British round last year.

Jorgen Matthias-Talviku of No Fear / Jumbo BT Racing Team will return once again as he set’s his sights on the title after making several podium appearances last year and finishing 5th in the championship in 2020, along with Tom Guyon who placed 8th last season and will return again in 2021.

Other familiar faces to look out for include Jeremy Sydow of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing and Kevin Horgmo from SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery, who will return to EMX250 after a season in MX2, as well as Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Racing’s newest recruit Maxime Grau.

Meanwhile Nicholas Lapucci and Federico Tuani of Fantic Factory Team Maddii will make the move from EMXOpen into the EMX250 class to test their efforts in the competitive category.

Defending World Champion, Tim Gajser of Team HRC got off to the most perfect start in Orlyonok, going 1-1 to secure the first overall victory of the season and start the year with the red plate on his factory CRF450RW.

While we expected Gajser to pick up right where he left off in 2020 after his title victory, for the Slovenian to arrive in Orlyonok and dominate the way he did was just impressive, especially when we think about race two, when he came back from outside the top 20 to win the race.

Matterley Basin is another hardpack circuit, like the Honda rider’s home track ‘Tiga243Land’ where he has spent a lot of his off-season putting in lap after lap. Carrying that momentum from the Orlyonok, there is no doubt that we will see Gajser going for more race wins in Great Britain on a terrain that he is very comfortable on!

Last year’s MXGP of Great Britain winner Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will be looking for more race practice as he aims to get up to speed with the rest of the field. During the MXGP of Russia, Herlings shared that his time healing from injury has cost him crucial race time and this weekend’s GP is another opportunity for the Bullet to get behind the gate and battle with the leaders. And while Herlings claims he still needs time, it’s still likely that we could see him win races and stand on the podium once again.

For fellow Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider, Antonio Cairoli, this weekend will be a chance to make up for lost ground in Orlyonok. The second race, Cairoli looked good as he led the way, until Gajser was able to catch and pass him. After that, thing’s went south for the Italian, as he crashed out on the slick finish jump, which damaged his bike forcing him to DNF and costing him a podium finish.

Cairoli has always been strong in Matterley Basin, having won there 5 times before, so there’s no doubt the Sicilian will be keen to make up the points he lost during the MXGP of Russia two weeks ago.

Also looking for redemption will be Glenn Coldenhoff and Ben Watson of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing, with the pair getting off to a tough start to the season. Both failing to finish inside the top 10 overall will be motivated to show their strength in Great Britain, especially Watson who will race on home soil. Their teammate Jeremy Seewer will also be looking to get inside the podium this time around after finishing 5th overall at the opening round.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre will be chasing more podium success after an eventful second race in Orlyonok, which still put the Frenchman on the podium, despite him ending up in the fence as he chased Pauls Jonass. Febvre placed third overall two weeks ago and will no doubt want to continue this momentum at the British GP.

Two stand-out performances from the MXGP of Russia no doubt go to Alessandro Lupino of MRT Racing Team and Pauls Jonass of Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing. Lupino put together two very impressive races, going 5-4 for 4th overall, missing out on a podium spot by just a mere 3 points. It’s a new side of Lupino that we got a glimpse of last season in Trentino, and we look forward to seeing more of that in 2021 as a podium finish is looking stronger than ever.

As for Jonass, the Latvian was dealt a blow in the opening race in Orlyonok where he didn’t finish though the second race saw the GasGas Factory rider finish the race third, behind Gajser and Herlings. It’s a new season and a new team for Jonass and so far, it’s looking good.

The MXGP of Great Britain will also see the return of Arminas Jasikonis of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing, as he is set to join his teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen in Matterley Basin. The team got off to a nice start this season, with Olsen placing 6th overall during the first GP with two very solid top 10 results which he can only build upon in the next few races.

Of course, there’s also the ‘home heroes’ Shaun Simpson and Nathan Watson, along with Ben Watson of course, who will line-up in Matterley Basin for their home Grand Prix. Racing in front of the local crowd always gives the riders that extra bit of motivation and there’s no doubt we will see the Brit’s give it their all for their fans.

  2. Tim Gajser
  3. Antonio Cairoli

Much like Gajser, the MX2 defending world champion, Tom Vialle from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing also started the season with a perfect score, carrying 50 points and the red plate into the second round this weekend.

For Vialle the goal this season is consistency, something that he was able to perfect last season and so far in 2021 he has done the same. Though it is early days, the Frenchman has matured as a rider quite a lot since the start of the season last year, so mistakes that he made in Matterley Basin last year are unlikely to happen again, therefore a bet that we will see Vialle on the podium is looking pretty safe at this stage.

His teammate Rene Hofer was close to a podium finish in Orlyonok a couple of weeks ago and also last season in Matterley Basin too. Hofer is back this season from injury and so far he is looking strong. His performance last year in Great Britain was good too, as he finished second in the second heat behind Vialle. We could expect something like this once again, as the Austrian will be keen to show what he can do this season.

Ruben Fernandez of Honda 114 Motorsport will enter the British Grand Prix off the back of his first podium finish in MX2, a big confidence boost for the Spaniard no doubt. Though it will be interesting to see whether Fernandez can deliver once again and add a couple of strong races to his tally.

Meanwhile Mathys Boisrame will want to do the same. There’s no secret that the Frenchman is a strong hardpack rider and with Matterley Basin a venue with a hard base, we could see the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team rider excel once again, he’ll just need the start to stick with the leaders. And his teammate Roan Van De Moosdijk and Mikkel Haarup will aim for the same. Haarup didn’t get off to the best start in Orlyonok, while Van de Moosdijk edged close to a podium finish. No doubt the Kawasaki riders will push for a podium spot, especially Haarup who finished third overall in Great Britain in 2020.

This weekend will also be an opportunity for redemption for Maxime Renaux, Thibault Benistant and Jago Geerts. Renaux was looking like a likely podium finisher in Russia, though struggled and only managed a 6th overall. Meanwhile Benistant and Geerts had problems of their own and placed 11th and 12th respectively. For Geerts it’s not the start of the season that he needed, so will be keen to claw back as many points as possible this time around.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton and Kay De Wolf are another pair to look out for as both will hope for two clean heats and solid points. Beaton finished 7th in Orlyonok and De Wolf 16th, as both got caught up in some unfortunate crashes with only slowed them down. Though the British GP is another opportunity to showcase what they can do and fight up there with the leaders.

Returning for his home Grand Prix will be Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee rider Conrad Mewse, who didn’t line up the races in Orlyonok due to illness. With two weeks of recovery time, the hope is that we will see Mewse line-up healthy and ready to fight for top positions in front of his home crowd.
