GASGAS Factory Racing Eye Up Start of Second MXGP Racing Season

As we count down the days to the start of our second season of bar-banging FIM Motocross World Championship action, we’re excited that we’ll soon get to see our four super-talented racers fly the GASGAS flag. Handling business in the MXGP class, and looking for a little redemption, will be Pauls Jonass alongside our second 450-class newcomer Brian Bogers. In MX2, things will be taken care of by the hard-charging Isak Gifting and our young German hot-shot Simon Langenfelder.

Representing GASGAS Motorcycles in the MXGP division, the Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing team has enlisted an all-new rider line-up for 2021. Former MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass is joined by Dutchman Brian Bogers, and we’re confident this formidable pairing is capable of strong results throughout the upcoming season.

Despite missing much of the 2020 season due to injury, Pauls has made a quick transition to our MC 450F and has spent the winter busting out the laps in Spain in readiness for the 2021 MXGP World Championship. Feeling confident in both himself and with his new bike, the Latvian looks to return to his 2019 speed, which saw him climb onto the overall MXGP podium three times en route to finishing sixth in the final series standings.

The highly capable Brian Bogers put together an impressive 2020 MXGP World Championship season, which didn’t go unnoticed. Now, with the Dutchman armed with a full factory GASGAS MC 450F, we’re confident of supporting Brian reach the next level and believe he’ll be knocking on the door of the top five throughout the 2021 series.

In the MX2 class, Isak Gifting returns to the DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Racing team for his first full season of world championship competition. He’ll be joined by Simon Langenfelder, another super-talented racer who frustratingly had his 2020 campaign cut short due to injury.

Since joining the DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Racing team as a fill-in rider last year, Isak Gifting has certainly impressed on the MC 250F. The super-Swede claimed a couple of MX2 moto podiums, ending the season with a strong run of results. Carrying that momentum into the winter months, the 20-year-old has enjoyed his first off-season as part of an official team and has fully embraced the opportunity to better himself ahead of the 2021 season. With the modest goal of achieving consistent top-10 results, Isak has the speed to challenge for the podium on a weekly basis.

Simon Langenfelder returns for his second season of racing in the MX2 World Championship aboard GASGAS machinery. The young German showed huge potential in 2020 with his season highlighted by a fifth-place moto finish at round two, before placing ninth overall at the MXGP of Riga just two rounds later. Spending much of the off-season focused on his riding technique and improving his overall speed, Simon is now poised to break into the top 10 on a regular basis in 2021.

Scheduled to start on June 13 in Russia, the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship consists of 19 rounds across the globe. Our racers will face the harshest of conditions, tough competitors, and experience bar-to-bar racing at each event with the champions crowned in Indonesia on December 5.

Pauls Jonass: “A new team for me this year and I’m really excited to be racing on a GASGAS! The Standing Construct team have had a lot of success in the past and they’re really professional, so I’m aiming to achieve strong results with them this season. Everything has been great so far and I feel like I fit in the team really well. I returned to riding in November and since then I’ve just been building and building and I’m in a really good place now with the bike and my fitness. If we can continue like this then my top-five speed will return, and I believe that I can push for the podium again. It’s not going to be easy but with how I’m feeling and with the progress we have made, it’s an achievable goal. We have a little bit of time until round one so until then we will keep working and learning. The goal for the year is to remain injury-free and be in the battle consistently every weekend. If we can do that then it will put us in a good place at the end of the season.”

Brian Bogers: “It’s been an easy transition for me going into the Standing Construct team. They are really organized, very professional and great people to work with. They already had a very good base setting for the bike, so I’ve not needed to do a lot of testing because the bike is already amazing. We did make some small changes for comfort mostly, so it’s been great to just ride and focus on my training both on and off the bike. With the calendar changes we have made a different training schedule in the lead up to round one but either way, I’ll be ready for the opening round. I have a really good team behind me, and they have given me the confidence to reach the next level so I will be pushing for stronger results in 2021.”

Isak Gifting: “I’m really excited for this year having spent a full off-season with the team, preparing for the season ahead. It was something new for me and I know that all the work that we have done will really help me when we start racing. We’ve spent a lot of time testing suspension settings and the bike is a really big improvement on last year. It was good last year but now, after spending all winter refining the bike, I feel the best I ever have on it. There is a little bit of pressure on me this season as the team and myself know that I can be on the podium, but I’m keeping my feet on the ground. The goals for this year are to be regularly inside the top 10, podium more often, and be more consistent. I think that on sand tracks I can push for wins. I’m realistic and know that it won’t be easy but with the progress that I’ve made with my preparation over the winter, and the improvements to the bike, I believe that I can achieve my goals this season.”

Simon Langenfelder: “It’s been a really productive winter for me. I recovered from my injury and then began testing with the team in December. We have some new parts on the bike for this season, so we spent some time finding the best set-up and we made some really good progress. The bike is improved a lot compared to last year. We’ve also ridden in a lot of different countries on many different surfaces, to test the bike in different conditions and it’s been really positive. On a personal level, I’ve worked on my technique as well. I’m using the clutch a lot less now, so this has helped with my momentum in corners. I’ve also focused on improving my fitness as well. I scored a couple of top-10 results in 2020 so my focus is on being a consistent top-10 rider in each and every race this year, and I feel like I can push for top fives as well. I’m excited to start the season. I feel really good on the bike and my fitness has never been better. I’m looking forward to a great season of racing.”

Robert Jonas – VP Motorsports Offroad: “Starting our second season of MXGP racing is a really exciting time for GASGAS. Last year, we achieved a lot of success including a GP win. This year, we believe that our riders can challenge for more wins and be at the front of the field in both classes. We have an all-new rider line-up in the MXGP class for 2021, and led by former world champion Pauls Jonass we're really looking forward to seeing what they can do on the MC 450F. Alongside Pauls, Brian Bogers showed incredible consistency and scored some really good results in 2020 – we feel that we can help guide Brian to even better things in 2021. In MX2, we have two very exciting riders, Isak Gifting and Simon Langenfelder. Isak was a revelation after he filled in for the team last season after Simon got injured, and he scored our first podium results in MX2. His all-action riding style fits the GASGAS brand perfectly and I can’t wait to see him race this year. Simon returns to the team for his second season in MX2. He showed a lot of potential last year with many outstanding results before his injury, so he’ll be one to watch. Overall, GASGAS are in a very good place to challenge for more success in 2021. We believe in the riders and believe that they can take GASGAS to the very top in MXGP.”

2021 Calendar Update: FIM Motocross World Championship

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 31 March 2021 - Infront Moto Racing would like to inform on the updates to the 2021 calendar of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the decision has been made to delay the start of the upcoming season, as the FIM Motocross World Championship will kick off in Orlyonok with the MXGP of Russia on the 12th – 13th of June.

The updated calendar will also welcome back the MXGP of Great Britain in Matterley Basin on the 26th – 27th of June, followed by the MXGP of Italy at the legendary circuit of Maggiora on the 3rd – 4th of July. MXGP of Latvia, MXGP of the Netherlands and Czech Republic will come next in July, before heading to the deep sand of Lommel for the MXGP of Flanders in August.

MXGP will then move to Sweden on the 14th and 15th of August, followed by the MXGP of Finland and MXGP of Turkey.

The newest addition to the 2021 racing calendar is the MXGP of Sardegna, with the popular winter training facility of Riola Sardo hosting the round 11 of the campaign, with the EMX65 and EMX85 Championship races held on the same weekend.

The championship will then continue with the MXGP of Germany, France, Spain, Portugal and Trentino in October, with a venue for the French Grand Prix to be confirmed soon.

The season will then conclude with three fly-away races, in Argentina on the 13th – 14th of November, followed by the MXGP of Asia and Indonesia on the 27th - 28th of November and 4th - 5th of December.

Meanwhile the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will go ahead on the 26th of September, as originally planned, with the Italian circuit in Mantova confirmed as the newest host of the prestigious event.

Additionally, the FIM-E Motocross of European Nations scheduled on the 18th and 19th of September, will now be as TBA, with more details to be announced at a later date.

The same race format as last year will be used during the upcoming season meaning that MXGP and MX2 will all run on Sunday and EMX and WMX run all on Saturday. The decision to run a one day format was made due to the tight racing schedule in order to allow more recovery time for the riders and the team staff.

Infront Moto Racing is hopeful that with the recent development of the vaccine, there will be a possibility to finally welcome back spectators in the summer months, which is very important to our beloved sport.

We would like to thank the FIM, FIM-Europe, all the organisers and federations along with the teams, riders, partners and fans for their continued support and understanding, as MXGP remain committed to bringing another epic season of racing!

British Motocross: History Lesson

As we sit through this extended off-season, it might be a good idea to remember something of our past and while the British Grand Prix might not be on the calendar in 2021, England is the home of the sport and its history important to all of us.

The Grand Prix of Great Britain is one of the longest running GPs on the calendar, starting way back in 1957, the first official year of the Motocross World Championship. It was at Hawkstone Park that the first GP was held, and the event was won by British legend and two times World Motocross Champion Jeff Smith riding a BSA.

Since that special day more than 60 years ago the British GP has visited many amazing circuits and seen some very special GP winners.

Hawkstone Park was the mainstay for the 500cc Grand Prix after that 1957 debut, and for eight years the best big bike riders competed around the tough sand track. Riders like Bill Nilsson and Rolf Tibblin scored victories at Hawkstone, but it was Smith who finished that early Hawkstone Park era with wins again in 1963 and 65.

Hawkstone Park would drift in and out of the FIM Motocross World Championship series, and in between the 500cc class would visit circuits like Farleigh Castle and Dodington Park. Many legends have won at these circuits, but none more popular than British legend and three times World 500cc Champion, Dave Thorpe.

Thorpe would win GPs at home in 1984, 1988 and 1989, although one of his greatest performances was in 1985 when he didn’t even win the GP. Crashing in the first corner with Merv Anstie (father of Max) Thorpe got up in last place and rode all the way to first. Completely worn out from the charge he was eventually repassed by Andre Malherbe who went on the steal the GP victory from Thorpe.

The 250cc class was also loaded with memorable moments, from the first victory at the Ipswich circuit by another British legend Dave Bickers in 1962, to Stefan Everts domination at the Foxhills circuit in 1995, 96 and 97. The 250 class ran at several different circuits between 1962 and the late 1990’s, with Donington, Hawkstone Park and Foxhills being the three circuits that brought big crowds and an exciting atmosphere.

The 125cc class didn’t see a Grand Prix in England until 1975, and it was Belgian legend Gaston Rahier who won at the Pembrokeshire circuit. Several different riders won in the class between 1975 and 1999, but one of the biggest wins was that of local rider Paul Malin who took victory at the Foxhills circuit in 1995. A massive crowd arrived at the circuit and the win by Malin was the only time a British rider won a GP in that era.

The new millennium and British GP spent a few years trying to find a home. Foxhills had aged out and no longer a GP facility, and Hawkstone Park had also disappeared from the GP calendar. Sure, some cool events at places like Isle of Wight, Matchams Park, Donnington Park, or Mallory Park were popular, but it wasn’t until Steve Dixon built a circuit at the Matterley Basin facility in 2006 that the British GP came into its own again.

Since Matterley Basin has been the home of the British Grand Prix names like Antonio Cairoli, Jeffrey Herlings, Clement Desalle, Tommy Searle, Glenn Coldenhoff, Tim Gajser and Valentin Guillod have had success.

Not to mention the circuit also held the 2006 and 2017 MXoN event, the first where Stefan Everts had his swansong from the sport with a victory over James Stewart and of course back in 2017 when Max Anstie shocked the world and went 1-1, putting Great Britain on the podium.

David Luongo Editorial – March 2021

Dear MXGP Friends,

March is usually the opening month of the MXGP season. Unfortunately, we still have some weeks to wait until the gates drop for the first time in 2021. Most of the teams are testing in the south of Italy or in Spain to be ready for the first Grand Prix and the first pre-season races are taking place. It is also the time of the official presentation of most of the teams and the riders with the usual photo shooting.

As you probably read, we updated the 2021 season calendar because of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic. The opening Grand Prix will take place in the Netherlands at Oss for the first time.

We will continue to monitor the situation every week, doing our best to deliver the most complete and exciting season possible.

Our goal is still to host public to most of our events. We are constantly in contact with the governments, the federations and the organizers to improve our different protocols and to adapt them based on the local rules regarding the virus. We are sure that the situation will improve a lot in the upcoming months with the massive campaign of vaccination that is taking place worldwide. It will give the possibility to the MXGP paddock personnel to be protected and will permit to host public during international events.

We announced during the week some new partnerships with TV broadcasters like Sport TV in Portugal and Kreator TV in Croatia, opening again the MXGP to new markets.

We are also glad to announce that the Junior World Championship will take place in Ukraine in 2023, confirming the strong interest of this country for motocross.

Finally, I would like to thank all the partners of MXGP to continue to support our sport, from the FIM to the teams and riders.

Kay de Wolf and MX2

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory MX2 rider Kay de Wolf might be just 16 years old, but the young Dutchman, born just down the road from Valkenswaard in 2020 had often been clocked quicker lap times than his two senior team-mates at the time Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jed Beaton in the deep sand.

Second in the 85cc Junior Motocross World Championship in 2018 has been the highlight so far, but there is much more that de Wolf wants to achieve. Known as the Red Hurricane, you get the feeling de Wolf might be around for some time on the GP scene and his move to the MX2 class in 2021 is one that many people are excited about. Team manager Rasmus Jorgensen isn’t too worried though and feels the youngster can come to terms with the move from EMX250 to MX2.

“Well,” Jorgensen said. “Many people didn’t agree moving him to the EMX250 when he was just 15, so a rookie in EMX and he won a race and did super well. You have to compare him to the guys he grew up with, like Liam (Everts), and those guys. I think he did a huge step on the 250 and he was third until the last round until he broke his nose and he finished fourth in the EMX and if you look at guys like Prado, from their EMX career, he did better or the same at the same age. In that point he did super well, but with Kay, he has the skill and is super talented, but now it is the mental side to prepare for the next challenge, which is a huge step into MX2. Getting him to man up a bit, but the potential is there. He needs to work hard, and it is nice to be in the position he is in, being Jed’s team-mate and he can make the mistakes he will make, but we need to minimize those mistakes of course.”

As for his background in the sport, de Wolf doesn’t come from a motocross family and despite living right in the middle of motocross circuits like Valkenswaard and another favourite training track for GP riders, Eersel, his family know very little about the sport. They are a riding family, but not a racing family.

“My Dad got a quad to just go around the house,” de Wolf said. “We have a bit of land in the city, and he rode from home to the city and at one stage he had to buy a new one. There was also a little Suzuki at the shop, and he asked me if I wanted that one and I said I really wanted it. Then I rode Pee Wee and that sort of thing. We live one kilometre from the track in Eersel, but he never went to the track, and my Dad doesn’t know anyone from the past, even now he only knows Jeffrey (Herlings) and Tony (Cairoli) and those guys, but not a lot more. When you say somebody outside the top ten, he doesn’t know anyone. But that is good, because they don’t know about the sport and has not ridden motocross, so that is okay.”

So, while the history of the sport isn’t important for the de Wolf family, their support of Kay is clear as his mother joins him at most training sessions and both his father and mother are 100% behind their teenage son, as he works his way through the classes, and hopefully can one day be mentioned in the same sentence as his countrymen Herlings and Coldenhoff.

The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP & MX2 Teams Flaunt 2021 Livery On Track

The month of February has been a busy and exciting start to 2021 for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams. Both squads made their annual trips south, to the island of Sardinia – the motocross hub of Europe throughout the winter months - to ride, train and test while enjoying a much better climate than that of Belgium and The Netherlands. During the teams’ time on the island, the riders dedicated two days to Yamaha Racing’s Official media production.

YZ450FM mounted Ben Watson #919, Jeremy Seewer #91 and Glenn Coldenhoff #259 watching the MX2 riders in action.

Arguably the strongest line-up in MX2, Maxime Renaux #959, Jago Geerts #93 and Thibault Benistant #198 have been putting the YZ250FM through its paces.
