The Challenge to Prado

The 2019 MX2 World Championship might seem as though Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Jorge Prado is a heavy favorite. The defending champion is young and hungry, but a long list of riders are looking at Prado and trying to work out how they can defeat the Spaniard mentally. For Prado, it is just do the same thing he did in 2018, and walk away with another title.

“Well,” Prado said. “In the beginning of the 2018 season my goal was to be consistent and I didn’t think about being World Champion. Now a few months after getting the title, the hard work we put in, yes for sure, it paid off. I am an athlete, so I don’t need to go to parties to have fun. I take my sport really serious and that is why I am probably World Champion at 17, because I take it seriously. Of course I am now 18, so I will get my driving license and that will make it easier. But I will still train and give the best I have.”

British rider Ben Watson of the Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team might just have improved enough in the winter to cause the Spanish world champ some problems. One thing is for sure, Watson is going to Argentina to score big points. Finishing top five in 2018 saw a huge improvement from the Englishman.

“When I found out that the first round was in Argentina again,” Watson said. “I have that feeling that I can go there the same how I felt at the start of 2018 in Argentina. I went back to a track I hadn’t done well at. I went there with a factory bike, and a lot of people looking at me and seeing what I can do with the extra support. I qualified third and had two fourths in the race and one of the best weekends of the year. Now I can go there with a completely different mind-set.”

Rasmus Jorgensen, who trains the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jed Beaton feels his riders have the potential to unsettle Prado. Despite being fully grown men compared to the still growing Prado, Jorgensen and his riders are working overtime to get where they need to be.

“The only thing, Prado is a small guy,” Jorgensen said. “I have two riders in the 80kg club, so maybe 15 kilos more than Prado. I tell the riders, we can’t change these things and we try to be better in all areas. We are all training hard, and a guy like Thomas, having become third last year, he wants to improve and battle Prado for the title, or Watson. In general we try and improve all areas. Starts are important with our two heavy guys, so we are doing a lot of starts. That is one of the strong points of Prado, he is always there in the start. Thomas is a heavy guy, and sometimes struggling in the start and Prado could be 10 seconds gone, you can’t do that with Prado.”

As for Thomas Kjer Olsen, he sees the long 19 round series and knows that pushing too hard too early doesn’t help for the later rounds, when the riders need to be at 100%.

“It is 19 races and a lot of travelling,” Olsen said. “You have to stay in shape throughout the season. I put everything into 2018 and the season was finished. My plan is to do a little more work in the gym, and get in better shape. Last year I was really ready going into the first race, but this year we will take it a little easier and build up throughout the season.”

Now, with just a month before the MX2 riders fly to Argentina, many are down in Spain training at RedSand, and some are in Sardinia racing the opening pre-season races. One thing is for sure, when they all arrive at that first round in Patagonia, they will all be looking to make the best start of their season possible.

Team HRC raring to go in 2019

Team HRC will once again feature three riders as they begin their assault on reclaiming the 2019 MXGP and MX2 motocross world championship titles. Tim Gajser (MXGP), Brian Bogers (MXGP) and Calvin Vlaanderen (MX2) have another year under their belts with the factory Honda team and will head to the Argentinian opener on March 3rd full of confidence that they can challenge for honours.

Slovenian double world champion Tim Gajser finished off the 2018 season strongly with multiple podiums positions, and he’ll be hoping to continue that good form when the 2019 campaign gets underway in Villa La Angostura, where he took victory in 2017 with a double-race win. With three top-two finishes in the last four events, Gajser is looking for even better results as he bids to get back the MXGP crown that he won on his Honda CRF450RW in 2016.

After an injury-hit 2018, Brian Bogers is hoping to put all that behind him and focus on having a successful campaign this year with Team HRC. The young Dutch rider only completed one event in what would have been his debut season in the MXGP class, but after a good off-season this winter, he is ready to show the world what he is truly capable of.

Calvin Vlaanderen returns aboard his Honda CRF250RW as he looks to challenge the best riders in the world in the MX2 championship. After placing sixth last year, Vlaanderen will look to climb the rankings in 2019 and add to his maiden overall victory which he achieved at the MXGP of Indonesia. He will also be hoping to improve upon his nine top-three moto results and five podium finishes, in what is an extremely competitive 250cc class.

The 2019 MXGP Motocross World Championships will begin at Villa La Angostura, Argentina on March 2-3.

Tim Gajser: It’s a pleasure to have been with the Honda family for six years so I’m really happy to continue this relationship and we are just one big family. I know everybody in the team and I feel really comfortable because they all want to help me do better each weekend. Already I can tell that the Honda CRF450RW is good, but we have some final tests this week before some pre-season races to try and improve it even more. Then we move onto Argentina and I can’t wait for the MXGP events to begin!

Brian Bogers: Everything is looking very good right now. We are working very hard to get ready for the season but the bike and team are amazing to work with. I’m really looking forward to this 2019 season because I want to get back in the rhythm of racing MXGPs again, after missing so much of the 2018 campaign. I know it will take a few races but I know for sure it will work because everyone is trying so hard to make it happen.

Calvin Vlaanderen: So far the off-season has gone well and we are on track for where we need to be right now. My hopes for the season are quite high and I would like to get more podiums and obviously more wins. However, the main goal is that I want to be fighting in the top three of the championship and that means I have to improve upon some of the things that I learnt last year. The reassuring thing is that I believe I have the bike and the team around me which can help me achieve that.

Marcus Pereira de Freitas, HRC General Manager – MXGP: With one year under our belts with this rider line-up, I believe that we can we do even better and maintain the progress and consistency for 2019. Tim finished 2018 strongly and he is really excited for the season to get started so he can continue that good form. Calvin is also extremely motivated to add to his victory at the MXGP of Indonesia last year and has worked very hard over the off season to try and make that happen. As for Brian, his attitude has been impressive after missing almost all of last year and he’s looked really good on the Honda CRF450RW in all our testing so far. There is a real energy with this whole team and I can’t wait for the first gate drop in Argentina!

MXGP of China, Shanghai – Presented to National Media

The 5th stop of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship will be held in suburban Fenxian District of Shanghai, China on May 1st, marking it the first time that Shanghai will host an off-road racing event. The event, that will be broadcasted LIVE, was presented to both local and national media who together reach a massive audience.

Bing Li, a famous TV host, presented the conference alongside guests, Bill Ni (President of H&H Sports), Frank Zhu (Vice president of H&H Sports), Ming Ni (Vice president of H&H Sports) among other MXGP of China partners in attendance who had the chance to share their commitment to the event and the pride of hosting the first ever MXGP event in China.

“Compared to Formula 1, it is not just about the speed, but also the performance and interest. People will see riders jumping with speed and there are many things to see, and they are unpredictable.” Said by Frank Zhu (Vice President)

“The Motocross World Championship was already popular in other countries back in the 1990s. Even though the name of the championship has changed, the essence of it has not. I am very glad that people in Shanghai will get the chance to see a live race, to feel the sound, speed, and competitiveness of motocross.” Said by Li Bing (The famous Host)

Currently the organizer H&H Sports is focused on creating the best international off-road circuit in Shanghai, as well as in China. Meanwhile, all the facilities around the circuit will be supported by the local Government. Furthermore, representatives from Youthstream have already made their inspections underlining the great cooperation with the local organizer, which is the key of the success.
