HERLINGS & SACHA COENEN CONQUER QUALIFYING AT THE MXGP OF SWITZERLAND PRESENTED BY iXS

FRAUENFELD (Switzerland) 28th March 2026 – Despite some freezing weather leading up to the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS, the sun came out over the fields of Frauenfeld today to thaw out the Schollenholz circuit, but the elements hit the track again with steady drizzle, making the Qualifying Races a tricky and chaotic affair for the Grand Prix classes!

After crashes kept him from scoring points in the Qualifying Races so far this year, it was Jeffrey Herlings who finally took his first Saturday win for Honda HRC Petronas, although he was chased all the way by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, with Tim Gajser scoring his best Saturday result yet for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.

The MX2 class saw a third straight Qualifying Race victory for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing flyer Sacha Coenen, getting to the front early and holding off a late challenge from Triumph Racing Factory Team’s Championship leader Camden McLellan, with Valerio Lata taking a good third for Honda HRC Petronas.

With the weather looking unpredictable for the Grand Prix races, the MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS could have a lot more surprises in store tomorrow!

MXGP Start Frauenfeld

New red plate holder Lucas Coenen was fired up to show his dominance in the premier class, and set the fastest time in both Free and Time Practice sessions.  In Free Practice Jeffrey Herlings was only five thousandths of a second behind, but could not replicate that in the afternoon session, finishing in seventh. Instead it was Romain Febvre who got the closest for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, six tenths down from last year’s GP winner Coenen. Kay de Wolf showed good pace with third position for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

From the ninth gate pick, however, came Andrea Adamo, taking a comfortable Holeshot for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing ahead of Herlings and Tim Gajser, with the second Honda HRC Petronas rider Tom Vialle keeping the home hero Jeremy Seewer out of the top four on his Red Bull Ducati Factory MX Team machine! Coenen had work to do but made quick work of moving forward, passing Vialle down the long back straight with an inside line that proved potent throughout the race!

Gajser was hassling Herlings, but nearly came unstuck with a wild moment through the corner after the finish line, while Febvre passed Vialle for fifth on lap two as Seewer was shuffled back to ninth, eventually finishing a disappointed 12th in front of his home fans. Febvre looked close to passing Coenen, but the teenager blocked his best moves. On lap four it was Herlings’ turn to make a move, a beautiful one around the outside of the corner at the end of Pit Lane to take the lead from Adamo!

Sensing that Herlings was escaping, Gajser took his shot and dived underneath the Italian on the same corner a lap later, with Coenen using his magic line down the back straight to gain speed and demote the 2023 MX2 World Champion to fourth.  Attacked by Febvre, Adamo wasn’t going to lose any further positions though, and the Frenchman made a mistake to slip down to seventh at the end of lap 10.

Just before this, Vialle appeared to get his boot stuck in his rear wheel, went down and dropped to tenth.  Not appearing to have his former speed, the Frenchman collided with his Honda HRC Petronas teammate Ruben Fernandez and hit the ground again! He finished a frustrated 18th at the flag.

Meanwhile, Coenen again used his fast back straight line to pass Gajser up the inside, and zoomed in on Herlings! Maxime Renaux rode well to finish fifth, behind Adamo, for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, with De Wolf claiming sixth ahead of an angry Febvre.

Pauls Jonass took eighth for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, and Alberto Forato took a solid ninth for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP, ahead of Fernandez.

Coenen did his best to attack Herlings through the driving rain, but on a slick circuit the Dutchman was able to hold on to win by two seconds, and reduce the Belgian’s Championship advantage to seven points!

It promises to be a battle royale on the Swiss grasslands tomorrow, and the weather is likely to be a factor!  You dare not miss what should be a tense and closely-fought battle for MXGP supremacy!

Jeffrey Herlings: “I tried to make a clean pass on my good buddy Andrea [Adamo] as much as I could as he’s a long-time friend. I had a lot of pressure from behind, so I knew I had to make a move quick to take the lead, and it wasn’t easy as he held a strong pace. Sunday is a long day, especially with these conditions. It’s quite cold, but hopefully tomorrow the weather improves and we can have a good one. This track is never easy for me, so to start with a win on Saturday feels really good.

Lucas Coenen: “The first lap was hectic, with riders going everywhere, but I managed to gain some positions. Then I had some issues and it became tricky to the end. I knew I needed to make quick passes, otherwise it would be difficult, but at the same time I didn’t want to take too many risks because the mud is really sticky. No excuses though, tomorrow is race day. We’re doing quite well, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Tim Gajser: “It was a good race. The start helped a lot because the track was getting greasy and slippery after all the rain. I think I rode smart and stayed close to the front guys, which is what we need. I felt comfortable on the bike, so overall I’m happy with today. Tomorrow the conditions could be even tougher, so the start will be key again, but hopefully we can improve and have a strong race.”

Sacha Coenen

In a familiar pattern this season, Sacha Coenen was the fastest in Free Practice, ahead of the Triumph Factory Racing Team duo of Guillem Farres and Camden McLellan.  However, it was the 2024 EMX250 winner here, Valerio Lata, who took the first gate pick for the Qualifying Race, nearly seven tenths ahead of McLellan, with Coenen in third.

Despite finishing just outside the top five in Time Practice, Mathis Valin burst into the lead on his Kawasaki Racing Team MX2 machine, with Coenen, Lata, and McLellan giving chase.  Through the second corner, however, Valin made a mistake and laid the bike down, quickly remounting near the back of the pack!  Coenen gratefully accepted the lead, while Farres leapt past his teammate through the same corner!

Simon Längenfelder was fifth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, with Cas Valk enjoying a good start for CRD Motosport TM Moto.  Liam Everts got past the Dutchman with a nice outside-to-inside move at the end of lap three, putting him fifth for Nestaan Husqvarana Factory Racing, and looking more comfortable on the progressively more slippery surface than most of his rivals.

In the meantime, Farres had crashed on the face of a jump, a very awkward spot, to give Coenen breathing room at the front. The Spaniard was to recover to seventh place, passing the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider, recently-turned 18-year-old Janis Reisulis with four laps to go.

Valin was making incredible progress through the pack after his early fall, with a determined pass on Janis Reisulis as well as on Everts, who had suffered a fall to dent his confidence.  The French flyer got all the way back to fifth place, ahead of the Belgian, but just falling short of passing Längenfelder for fourth.  The Kawasaki man could well be a factor tomorrow!

Rounding out the points scorers were Julius Mikula, scoring another good Saturday result in ninth for Osička KTM, with Karlis Reisulis tenth for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2.

Up front, McLellan had taken his time to get past Lata for second, and did so with a sweet move around the outside next to the Pit Lane on lap nine.  He got to within striking distance of Coenen with three laps to go, but was unable to pull the trigger despite some ragged moments for the Belgian! While Lata held on for a season-best third, McLellan had to settle for second, while Coenen kept his perfect Saturday record for the season intact with his third straight Qualifying Race win!

McLellan doubled his Championship lead over Längenfelder to four points, while Sacha has passed Farres for third in the standings.

With the weather tough to predict, tomorrow’s races could blow both World Championships wide open on Grand Prix Sunday!  Be sure to join us at the Schollenholz circuit, or on MXGP-TV for what could be a crazy day of MXGP action!  See you there!

Sacha Coenen: “There was a lot of pressure in the last laps and the track was really sketchy. I made a good choice with the goggles, which was important. My pace was good though, and towards the end I just focused on riding my own lines and creating a gap. I felt good on the bike. Hopefully the conditions are a bit better tomorrow, but we’ll see, I’m looking forward to it.”

MXGP OF SWITZERLAND PRESENTED BY iXS | OPENING PRESS CONFERENCE SETS THE TONE IN FRAUENFELD

FRAUENFELD (Switzerland) 27th March 2026 – The MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS officially got underway today in Frauenfeld, as key figures gathered for the traditional Opening Press Conference ahead of a highly anticipated race weekend.

Present at the conference were Willy Läderach, the MXGP of Switzerland’s Organiser alongside Romain Febvre of Kawasaki Racing Team and Lucas Coenen of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

With another year of world-class racing on Swiss soil, fans can expect a full line-up of stars and World Champions ready to take on the unique challenges of Frauenfeld. The tight, hard-pack circuit will offer a stark contrast to the opening rounds in Argentina and Andalucía, demanding precision, adaptability and strong starts from all riders.

Excitement is building as Swiss fans prepare for a spectacular weekend of racing from Saturday through Sunday.

Event organiser Willy Läderach underlined both the scale of the effort behind the event and the optimism heading into the weekend:
“It’s very hard work to build up an MXGP like this, but our teams have done a very professional job and everything is ready. We’re hoping for good weather so the races can be really interesting. We’re ready to start this GP and hope it will be a great one.”

Romain Febvre arrives in Frauenfeld looking to rebound after a rare non-scoring second race last weekend following a crash. The Frenchman remains confident about his form and the championship fight ahead:
“I feel okay now. It was a strange crash and I wasn’t expecting it at all. The first days were tough, but nothing serious, and I could already ride again this week. With a bit more rest, I feel pretty good for the weekend. [..] It’s never good to score zero, but it’s only the beginning. The level is really high this year and I think we’ll see a strong battle between several riders.”

Red plate holder Lucas Coenen heads into the Swiss round with confidence after a dominant performance last weekend and anticipates a different challenge:
“It was one of those weekends where everything just clicked. You don’t get that every time, so I know it won’t always be like this, but it was a really good one. [..] We’ll have to see how the track develops, but it’s a hard-pack track so it will be an adjustment. In the end, it’s about doing the best we can like every weekend.”

With a stacked field, a technical hard-pack layout, and the importance of strong starts and early laps, everything is in place for an exciting edition of the MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS. As the gates drop in Frauenfeld, fans can look forward to another outstanding showcase of motocross at the highest level.

MXGP ENTERS A NEW ERA WITH INTRODUCTION OF FIM TV CONTROL SYSTEM IN ANDALUCIA

FRAUENFELD (Switzerland) 26th March 2026 – The FIM and Infront Moto Racing have taken a major step forward in elevating motocross with the introduction of a brand-new FIM TV Control system, debuting at the MXGP of Andalucia in Almonte.

For the first time in motocross history, a video Control Room has been implemented, designed to support race direction in enforcing regulations, improving decision-making, and enhancing rider safety and event security.

This innovation will now be present at every MXGP and MX2 round moving forward. Through full integration with live TV feeds and advanced camera coverage, including drone footage, FIM Race Direction will be able to monitor every aspect of on-track action in real time.

David Luongo, Infront Moto Racing CEO & President: “This new TV control room will give a complete overview for the officials and the FIM Race Direction to control and monitor the races in every aspect during the MXGP weekends. It will undeniably improve efficiency and reactivity of the officials as well as the medical teams across the track; ultimately helping our sport to be safer during races. This evolution is a major step into a more modern era of our sport. I want to thank FIM, its president Jorge Viegas and CMS Director Antonio Alia for the great collaboration on this project. “

Antonio Alía, FIM / CMS Director underlined the significance of this milestone: “A new era in the way the MXGP & MX2 events are going to be managed has started. From the MXGP in Spain onwards, at every event, the FIM Race Direction will be able to control what happens during the sessions with a brand-new Control Room. This system allows us to monitor every sequence of the action on track thanks to the collaboration with Infront Moto Racing, the TV feeds and the unconditional technical support from all the staff involved. This step will not only open the way to adopting new technologies, but it will also provide valuable data that can be used to improve medical and marshalling responses. At the same time, it helps us manage the sporting side of the championship in a more professional way, with the ability to record and analyse every detail from multiple camera angles, including drones. This is just the beginning. More tools and devices will be added in the near future, and we are confident that this evolution will continue to transform the way motocross is viewed and managed.”

Beyond officiating, the system will also play a crucial role in coordinating faster medical and marshal interventions, thanks to improved visibility and data access during races.

With this innovation, MXGP continues to push the boundaries of the sport, combining tradition with cutting-edge technology to ensure fair competition, increased safety, and a new standard of race control.

MXGP IS FIRING INTO FRAUENFELD FOR THE MXGP OF SWITZERLAND PRESENTED BY IXS!

FRAUENFELD (Switzerland) 26th March 2026 – The 2026 FIM Motocross World Championships heads to familiar ground for the first time this year, as the Schollenholz circuit in Frauenfeld hosts round three, the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS, the first true hard-pack grassland test of the season!

The Frauenfeld venue has featured three different circuits in its nine previous incarnations, beginning with a 125cc GP in 1981, won by the late, great Eric Geboers, but for its tenth staging we return to the layout that has held the last three events, and the picturesque venue that overlooks the city of Frauenfeld in the north of the country should be packed again with local fans as well as those that travel from over the nearby border with Germany!

The only male rider to have won more than a single GP here is Honda HRC Petronas’ new signing Jeffrey Herlings, having won back-to-back MXGP events in 2017 & ’18.  However, it was a Red Bull KTM Factory Racing clean sweep in 2025, with Lucas Coenen winning for the first time in the MXGP class with a 1-1 score-line, as did his teammate in MX2, Simon Längenfelder, to the joy of his fellow German speakers in the crowd!

Coenen heads into this weekend with the Championship leader’s red plate for the first time in his career, with an eight-point advantage over Herlings and his new teammate Tom Vialle, who lies another five behind.

The Triumph Factory Racing Team also bring their first ever red plate to Frauenfeld, on the bike of Andalucia winner Camden McLellan, hot from his first ever GP win and with a narrow two-point lead over Längenfelder.  McLellan’s teammate Guillem Farres is third, 17 behind the German.

The EMX250 European Championship runs for its second round this weekend, with a mammoth 71 riders entered for the class!  Championship leader Francisco Garcia took a double win on home ground in Spain, and holds a 12-point advantage for Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki, ahead of his teammate Jake Cannon, with Frenchman Mano Faure third for Team VHR Yamaha Official. Swede August Frisk took a double win here last year and could be a factor again for the Kullen 1502 KTM team.

Although no Swiss riders qualified for the event in Spain, nine hopefuls are in the entry list for their home round, led by Eliot Vidalenc for the MX-Academy Honda Racing by Meuwissen Motorsports squad.

The EMX125 European Championship Presented by FMF Racing series also has its second round running at Frauenfeld, and a tightly-contested opener showed us that this class will be as wild as ever in 2026! Norman KTM Factory Rookies teamster Moritz Ernecker took the overall win, and the Austrian will look to build on his single-point lead at his closest GP to home!  Former World 85cc Junior Champion Sleny Goyer will be keen to stop him for Yamaha Europe Monster Energy MJC, while rising Danish star Bertram Thorius will hope to add to his second race win from Spain as he fights from third in the series for Fantic Factory Racing EMX.  The big Swiss hope, maybe for the whole weekend, is KTM-mounted privateer Ryan Oppliger, who lies fourth in the series and is known for being a fast starter!

With low temperatures, and possible even snow, on the weather forecast for the weekend, the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS could hold several surprises in store for the MXGP Paddock at Frauenfeld!

Lucas Coenen

Lucas Coenen put on a masterclass at Almonte to lead the MXGP World Championship heading to the third round, and although the terrain is massively different at Frauenfeld, he put together a similar 1-1 performance last year at this venue, which was his first such success in the MXGP class for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Jeffrey Herlings was still fighting back to fitness at this event last year, but took second overall in 2024 and those GP wins in both 2017 and ’18.  The only rider to land on both MXGP podiums this season is highly likely to be a factor in his fifth appearance here.

In contrast, Jeffrey’s Honda HRC Petronas teammate Tom Vialle will be starting his first GP at this venue, having only competed twice here in the EMX250 class. His fellow Frenchmen Romain Febvre and Maxime Renaux sit fourth and fifth in the series, equal on points, and although the defending Champion has never won here before, his compatriot did prevail in 2023 for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.  Febvre is deemed to have no lasting damage from his crash in Spain, and the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP rider has never finished outside of the top five in his six GPs at this circuit, so will come to the third round in a confident mood.

Both Renaux and his new teammate Tim Gajser have rough memories of last year’s Swiss GP, but the Slovenian will fall back on the experience of his perfect weekend in 2024 to draw inspiration and pull himself up from sixth in the Championship, only a point behind the two French riders ahead of him!

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot Andrea Adamo has had a decent start to his first MXGP campaign, and took second overall at Frauenfeld in his MX2 Championship year. Honda HRC Petronas man Ruben Fernandez took the Qualifying Race win here last season, and could be a contender again in 2026. Red Bull Ducati Factory MX Team rider Calvin Vlaanderen and Febvre’s Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP teammate Pauls Jonass complete the current Championship top ten.  The Latvian hasn’t finished a full MXGP race here, although he took podium results home from Frauenfeld in both 2017 and 2018.

Kay de Wolf will try to build on his cautious MXGP class debut for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, at a track where he won in 2024, and his fellow Dutchman Rick Elzinga comes back from injury to make his 450 debut for MRT Racing Team Beta. Another class rookie, Thibault Benistant, who took the MX2 victory here in 2023, has to recover from a painful practice crash to line up in Switzerland for Team Honda Motoblouz SR Motul.

Ten Swiss riders will line up in the premier class this year, including 34-year-old veteran Arnaud Tonus, who stands in for the injured Isak Gifting at JK Racing Yamaha.  He won the first race here in 2017 and will certainly raise a cheer with his #200 machine.  Red Bull Ducati Factory MX Team’s Swiss veteran, Jeremy Seewer, will be desperate to replicate his podium here from last year as he tries to lift himself from 20th in the points table.

Nico Greutmann got fans cheering here with second in the first EMX250 race, and he makes his first GP appearance on home turf in the MXGP class this weekend for the MX-Academy Honda Racing by Meuwissen Motorsports team. Sadly, Kevin Brumann has been ruled out of his home round with a shoulder injury sustained at Almonte, although his MX-Handel Husqvarna Racing team will still host several guests in the Paddock this weekend.

The battle for the top spots should be intense, as the stacked field try to stop Lucas Coenen from going on a run of victories and keep the Championship battle tight at the top!

MX2 Start Frauenfeld 2025

While reigning MX2 World Champion Simon Längenfelder has looked solid with the #1 plate so far in 2026, it looks like Camden McLellan has a speed advantage on soft terrain, which makes GPs at hard-pack circuits like this one key to Simon’s chances of defending his title!

The German has won the last three full GP races at Frauenfeld, and the Swiss round was the start of his major title challenge in 2025.  If the Triumph riders can get around him here, it will make the Championship contest very tight!  However, with McLellan fifth and Farres sixth in the 2025 Swiss event, they will need to pick up their pace on the grasslands to keep their positions of first and third in the Championship.

Sacha Coenen has won both Qualifying Races so far this season, but he has yet to break the overall top ten in Switzerland for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. Mathis Valin is behind the Belgian, fifth in points, and starting his first Swiss GP after missing last year’s race with injury.  He did take both a first and a second in his two EMX250 races here, so the Frenchman could be a threat.

Rookie Janis Reisulis has been a sensation this season for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, and took an EMX125 race win here in 2023. His fast starts could continue to serve him well this weekend.  Liam Everts sits seventh in the standings, and usually goes well on the slick Swiss surface. After third here in 2024 and second in 2025, he will feel the urge to go one better again to re-ignite his title challenge for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

Janis’ brother and teammate Karlis Reisulis, Honda HRC Petronas’ Valerio Lata, and the SB Racing KTM of Jens Walvoort round out the top ten in the series, but that could all change with the first true grassy hard-pack surface of the year!

No Swiss riders have scored points yet in 2026’s MX2 races, but four hopefuls including the Oechslin brothers Samuel and Thomas are hoping to rectify that situation!

The MXGP of Switzerland, Presented by iXS could throw more thrills and surprises in this already epic World Motocross Championship season! Be sure to join us in person, or on MXGP-TV for round three from Frauenfeld!
