DAVID LUONGO EDITORIAL | MXGP MAG #129

Dear MXGP fans,

We just entered the second part of the season and the last triple Grand Prix delivered great races.

In MXGP, we got three different GP Winners. Jorge Prado won the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, then Jeffrey Herlings in Latvia and Tim Gajser in Maggiora (Italy). The battle for the title will probably happen between those three fantastic riders regrouping 12 World Titles. After exchanging the red plate after each race with Jorge Prado, Tim Gajser created a small gap in the championship classification leading Prado by 34 points and 71 points on Herlings.

In MX2, the Belgium talents are bringing a series of five Grand Prix wins in a row thanks to Liam Everts, Sacha and Lucas Coenen. Kay De Wolf is still leading the championship by 48 points on Simon Laengenfelder and 52 points on Lucas Coenen. We also witnessed during the Grand Prix of Italy, Valerio Lata making his first ever podium finishing third.

The weather is also playing a big role during this season as we had more than half of the Grand Prix with heavy rain. I want to thank the organizers for the tremendous work they delivered to maintain and preserve the tracks and the different infrastructures during those difficult weekend.

During the MXGP of Maggiora, Team Italy unveiled their official shirt for the upcoming Monster Energy Motocross of Nations in Matterlay Basin – UK. Week after week the federations are announcing their teams as we are building up for the biggest off road event in the world upcoming in October.

I couldn’t write my editorial without having a word on our estimated Wolfgang SRB who passed away last month. He has been probably one of the most important people in the Motocross community during the last 40 years. He devoted all his life to this sport, representing the FIM and leading the Motocross Commission for decades. All our thoughts are going to his family.

Now it is time for the double Grand Prix of Indonesia, a fascinating country, where MXGP is always fantastically welcomed.

WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE | HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF WEST NUSA TENGGARA

LOMBOK (Indonesia) 28 June 2024 – It’s time to feel the heat as the second half of the MXGP season gets underway, with round eleven coming to you from just under the equator, as the Selaparang Circuit on the island of Lombok hosts the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara, named after the province of the country that includes this row of islands along the south edge of Indonesia. There’s no doubt about it, this will be the hottest race of the year!

The MXGP World Championship is turning into a constant battle between Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado, the two most successful riders ever in this part of the world, and Jeffrey Herlings is still very much a factor as he races in Indonesia for the first time in six years!  The red plate is with the Slovenian, but his two chasers will be determined to take back the momentum!

In MX2, Kay de Wolf still leads the series, but is looking for his first GP win since early April to hold off his pursuers! Simon Laengenfelder is second in the points but still looking for his first GP victory of the season, while Lucas Coenen is right behind the German and the only one in the class with a previous victory among these islands! Sacha Coenen is the man on form, however, with two straight GP wins coming into this race! It is anybody’s guess as to who can win from the hungry pack of MX2 chargers!

Our long-time partners at the IEG Group will be broadcasting Live from Lombok this weekend. See below for the full list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

TRADITIONAL INDONESIAN WELCOME EXTENDED TO MXGP AHEAD OF TWO WEEKENDS OF RACING IN LOMBOK

LOMBOK (Indonesia) 26 June 2024 – A huge celebration welcomed the riders, teams and crews of the MXGP Paddock today as Mataram, the capital city of the West Nusa Tenggara province, closed its main high street for a rider’s parade from the city’s elaborate Islamic Center to the Udayana Teras, where speeches, dances and an instrumental show impressed everybody present.

Among those in attendance, Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo and FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela were welcomed by the Governor of West Nusa Tenggara 2018-2023, Dr. H. Zulkieflimansyah S.E. M.SC, Major of the City of Mataram Dr H. Mohan Roliskana presented by H. Lalu Martawang and Drs. Tri Budi Prayitno, M.Si, Head of Youth and Sport Department West Nusa Tenggara Province after a ride to the Teras in traditional pony-drawn carts called Cidomo.

From the Islamic Center, a seriously impressive structure and the religious heart of the island of Lombok, the riders used traditional bicycles to join the parade, which was headed by traditional musicians who played Indonesian Gendang drums and a mix of percussion to lead the march! Once the musicians arrived at the Udayana Teras open area, with a tribune full of local fans keen to spot the stars of MXGP, they performed music that originated from welcoming armies returning from battle, now welcoming the MXGP warriors to the island!

After the national anthem of Indonesia, “Indonesia Raya” was played, master of ceremonies Mudji Idrus invited first Mr Luongo to the stage who expressed his pleasure in returning to Lombok for two GPs, thanking the organizer and the FIM for their support. He emphasised MXGP's goal to expand globally, highlighting Indonesia's importance for motorsport and the excitement of racing in beautiful, exotic locations. Then Mr Alia Portela thanked everyone for attending, praised the organisers and Infront for their commitment and highlighted the island's beauty and wildlife, encouraging all to enjoy the events. Finally, Dr Zulkieflimansyah addressed the crowd in Indonesian, expressing his wish for all competitors to enjoy good luck in their races over two weekends.

Riders attending the media event included  Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Ferruccio Zanchi, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Calvin Vlaanderen and Andrea Bonacorsi, Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Seewer, De Baets Yamaha’s Benoit Paturel, Team Leoparden Racing’s Magnus Ambjornsson, JK Racing Yamaha’s Isak Gifting, Schmicker Racing’s Cornelius Toendel, Bike It MTX Kawasaki’s Jack Chambers, Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod and Kevin Horgmo, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo, Liam Everts and Sacha Coenen, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini, Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen, Fantic Factory Racing MX2’s David Braceras and Kay Karssemakers, F&H Racing Team's Quentin Prugieres, WZ Racing Team's Oriol Oliver, Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Mikkel Haarup and Camden McLellan, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2’s Rick Elzinga and Karlis Reisulis, TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar, and also local hero JM Racing Astra Honda’s Delvintor Alfarizi. while legends like Jacky Martens and Joël Smets were also present to this special event.

Gajser, Seewer and Everts accepted the invitation to join the dignitaries on stage and received a traditional Lombok headpiece, given as a symbol of peaceful intentions.  Then the audience were treated to a performance of the Legend of the Princess of Mandalika, a story of restoring piece from conflict through self-sacrifice, told through a stunning traditional dance performance.

Finally, all riders, team personnel and every local fan present assembled on the steps of the tribune for a mass family photo, proudly showing the symbol of the “L” for Lombok!

After such a warm welcome, everybody is ready to begin the first event, the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara, tomorrow morning from 09:15 local time with the MX2 Start Practice.

MXGP HEADS EAST FOR INDONESIA AND THE MXGP OF WEST NUSA TENGGARA

LOMBOK (Indonesia) 26 June 2024 – As the FIM Motocross World Championship begins the second half of the season, it’s that time of the year when we head to the world’s fourth most populous nation, and the largest archipelagic state on the planet, the Republic of Indonesia!  The first of two Grands Prix to be held at the Selaparang Circuit on the island of Lombok, the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara is named after the political Province which covers the western portion of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

The island of Lombok is roughly half the size of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, but home to roughly 4 million people, and the circuit itself is on the grounds of the disused airport of Selaparang, on the edge of the Province’s capital city of Mataram.  This will be the second year of action at this particular circuit, after the GP in 2023 saw overall victories for Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre in MXGP, and Jago Geerts for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Team in MX2.

The Indonesian islands have hosted 12 MXGP events at seven different circuits in total, the first being held in 1995, which saw the first ever Grand Prix win for French legend Sebastien Tortelli in the 125cc class at the Yogyakarta circuit, where he also won the following year as part of his first world title-winning campaign.  Yogyakarta hosted three 125cc GPs in total, with nearby Bandung hosting a solitary 250cc-only race in 1997.

More recently, the MXGP World Championship went to Pingkal Pinang in 2017 & ’18, Semarang in 2018 & ’19, and Palembang in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic restricted a return to Indonesia until 2022’s sole event at Sumbawa.

The 2024 MXGP World Championship has seen five straight rounds of the red plate swapping between reigning Champ Jorge Prado for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser before the recent MXGP of Italy.  Sadly for the Spaniard, a first lap collision and pile-up left him with a leg injury that took him out of the second race at Maggiora, leaving the Slovenian, who won the GP overall, with a 34-point gap at the top of the standings as the teams packed the flight cases for Indonesia.

Fortunately for Prado, he was left with nothing worse than heavy bruising and is able to race on two weeks later.  He still has a 37-point advantage over Jeffrey Herlings, who lies third for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  In the absence of the injured Febvre, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Calvin Vlaanderen, and Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Seewer moved up to fourth and fifth in the Championship table.

All of the top six in the series have tasted success in Indonesia, with Seewer winning his first ever Grand Prix back in 2017 at Pangkal Pinang’s muddy MX2 race, before Vlaanderen also took his very first GP victory at the same track in MX2 a year later!  Both Prado and Gajser have won three GPs in the islands, although Prado’s were all in MX2.  Herlings won both events in 2018 but hasn’t been to this part of the world since then.  Febvre won both Indonesian events in 2023, starting a five-GP winning streak for the Frenchman, who is sadly still out with his thumb injury from St Jean d’Angely.

The biggest question in MXGP is whether or not Prado will be able to return to the blinding pace of the leading riders in the class, and be able to haul back the points gap to Gajser as the second half of the season gets underway!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 511 Points;   2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 477 Points; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 440 Pts; 4. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 339 Pts; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 332 Pts; 6. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 327 Points; 7. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 302 Pts; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 274 Pts; ; 9. Brian Bogers (NED, FAN), 213 Pts; 10. Kevin Horgmo (NOR, HON), 206 Pts.

MX2 has delivered winning streaks throughout the season so far, with Kay de Wolf winning the first three rounds for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, then Liam Everts taking two in a row for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  De Wolf’s teammate Lucas Coenen delivered his own hat-trick of victories through Galicia, France, and Germany, before his brother Sacha Coenen took his first career overall in Latvia and followed it up in Italy for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, making it a five-GP streak for the Coenen family! De Wolf has kept the Championship leader’s red plate since the opening round, with his current 48-point lead maintained through sheer consistency. Second in the standings for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing is Simon Laengenfelder, who has also stayed consistent but is still searching for his first GP win since August last year.

Third in the series is the rider who took his first career Grand Prix win in Indonesia last year with a perfect weekend, Lucas Coenen, who won in Sumbawa before Jago Geerts won at Lombok. As Tom Vialle won at Sumbawa in 2022, no other rider in MX2 has won a race in the Asian island nation.

The chase is on at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Everts and Andrea Adamo need to catch up from fourth and fifth in the standings, with the reigning Champion now lying over 100 points down on the current series leader.

Delvintor Alfarizi from JM Racing Astra Honda will be the hero for the locals as the rider is the only Indonesian representant in a OAT team. Competing at home with a lot of support from the fans will surely give Alfarizi another motivation to get his scoring tally going in the championship.

As always, the MX2 class has served up far more unpredictable racing than the points table would have you believe, so look out for some wide-open action again amongst the flat-out 250cc combatants!
