David Luongo – Editorial – March 2023

Dear MXGP Friends,

The season started with a fantastic Grand Prix in Patagonia-Argentina, on the beautiful track of Villa La Angostura.

The Argentinian fans answered the call with a record of attendance for the 7th time we were going to Patagonia. In MXGP 41 riders entered the Grand Prix and 33 riders in MX2, it was definitely the perfect scenario to start the season.

The new points system of the Saturday RAM Qualifying Race gave a totally new rhythm to the weekend. The show rose a new level with a fantastic engagement from the riders, who already need to score points for the championship. It will open the championship to more suspense, as to some riders fit better Saturday’s sprint format, while others are better on the 2-heats format of Sunday. It will be very interesting to see how it will develop during the season. In MX2, Jago Geerts made a perfect start with 60 points and the red plate, and in MXGP Rubén Fernández won his first MXGP Grand Prix but let the red plate to his compatriot Jorge Prado, who started the weekend with a victory on Saturday.

MXGP went back to Europe to celebrate the MXGP of Sardegna at the deep sand of Riola Sardo. A totally different kind of track than Argentina but the same intensity. Here again Geerts showed to the MX2 class that he will be the man to beat this year, but Kay De Wolf, Thibault Benistant and Andrea Adamo are chasing him. In MXGP, the weekend developed positively for Jeffrey Herlings, who offered a fantastic battle with Romain Febvre and Maxime Reneaux, after a comeback in the second heat on Sunday from the back of the pack to win his 100th Grand Prix! Jorge Prado kept the red plate and he is 7 points ahead of Herlings thanks to his victory on Saturday’s RAM Qualifying race. But here again the battle for the title will be more open than ever.

Italy was also the occasion for the launch of the new paddock show; from now on, in Europe and after the last Saturday race at 6pm, the top riders and winners of the day will be invited on a bright new structure in the paddock to be interviewed in front of the fans.

On the TV production side, the 2023 season was the occasion to completely renew our 26 minutes magazine that highlights the best moments of the Grand Prix on the Monday following the Grand Prix. The new Behind the Gate will go deeper into the riders’ preparation, their lifestyle, it will feature some of their personal stories, and it will also show the background of the different Grand Prix and all the stakeholders that make this great championship possible. For sure, we will not forget the best moments and images of racing. It is available on the main MXGP’s broadcasters and on our MXGP-TV.com channel. Regarding the TV Coverage, we have just renewed our agreement with Automoto until 2024 and with the Dutch Channel NOS, and the Women Motocross World Championship’s season will be broadcasted live in Spain on ESPORT3, TV3´s thematic sports channel in Catalunya, as well as on the digital platform Esport3.cat.

After a weekend off, we are heading to Switzerland, where MXGP will finally come back after several years of break, a perfect Easter Weekend in the tradition and the passion of the Swiss fans of Motocross. We are back to Frauenfeld, back on the traditional track of the club. We will have a very special Grand Prix with the classical Saturday program, but on Sunday MXGP will be off and the racing will be back for Easter Monday. There is no doubt that Jeremy Seewer and all the Swiss riders will count on the massive presence of the public, who have always answered the call. The entry list of the riders is showing a big participation in all the categories with more than 48 in MXGP, 40 in MX2, 50 in WMX and almost 100 riders in EMX125 for their opening round! No doubt, MXGP season is on!

See you in Switzerland.

WELCOME PRESS CONFERENCE OFFICIALLY STARTS THE MXGP OF SWITZERLAND PRESENTED BY iXS

FRAUENFELD (Switzerland) 7 April 2023 – The third round of the FIM Motocross World Championship has officially started with the opening press conference today in Frauenfeld.

Present for the conference was Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela, Organizer of the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS Willy Laderach as well as Red Plate Holder Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer.

The last edition of the MXGP of Switzerland in 2018 saw some intense battles in both MXGP and MX2 and ended with the victories of Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado on their road to win the World Title in their respective category.

Infront Moto Racing is excited to come back to Frauenfeld especially as the track has been completely renewed which will only add to the challenge for the riders.

Let’s now see what the MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS holds for us during this Easter period!

Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo: “I want to emphasise and thank Willy Laderach and his team for the amount of work done over the past four years to bring back the MXGP of Switzerland. It is good to be back in Frauenfeld where we had a great Grand Prix in 2018 and we are proud to be here this week. It is a great paddock, really comfortable combined with a great motocross track with very good and compact dirt. Also, most of the track can be seen by the public which will make an amazing weekend racing for all the fans”

FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela: “I also wish to congratulate Willy Laderach and his team for making this project possible, the outcome of this success is the great number of riders that we are going to have this weekend. This is a special event as they will be racing on Saturday and Monday due to the Easter Sunday and everybody is excited and want to ride in Switzerland. It has been a long wait until we finally could come back to the country for a MXGP race and there will be plenty of spectators so I wish you all a nice and successful weekend. Thank you very much.”

Organizer of the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS Willy Laderach: “It is nice to be here and finally organise this event. The track is good and the paddock is amazing. We are very happy and proud that Infront Moto Racing and the FIM validated our project and stop the long wait for another MXGP of Switzerland. The track is looking good and this is thanks to Infront Moto Racing’s and our track building team who did a very good job to make this circuit operational and ready for this weekend. Thank you everybody and welcome back to Switzerland”

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado: “I am very happy to come and racing again in Switzerland. I have really good memories from last time when I won in MX2 class. It is very special to come back and really good to see Jeremy Seewer who is fighting for the MXGP title, being able to ride in his own country. I hope we can have a really nice racing and have a fun weekend.”

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer: “I am so amazed to see the passion going into this event since we arrived at the track. Coming here is so special and it feels amazing which gives me a big smile. As Jorge said, this is so important to have a local GP for riders as nothing beats the thousands of fans coming to see and support their local hero. That also makes the sport and history. I am very excited and ready to go!”

Seewer Goes Home

Monster Energy Yamaha rider Jeremy Seewer heads to his home Grand Prix this weekend with a lot of points to make up on names like Jorge Prado, Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre. Always known as a slow starter to a season, the rider from Switzerland is also known as a rider who gets through a season without major injury and eventually finishes Vice Motocross World Champion.

That has been the script now for a handful of years, so entering round three and his home race, you get the feeling he might start making that run to the front as quickly as this weekend. In front of his countrymen and on a track he has enjoyed so far.

Since his first Grand Prix win in 2017, at the MXGP of Indonesia, Seewer has claimed another nine GP wins in that six-year period. While his five wins in MX2 and five in MXGP are numbers a long way down from riders like Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado and Romain Febvre, he is the next guy (along with Glenn Coldenhoff) to really create some interest and be a real serious contender in MXGP.

At the first round in Argentina, a huge crash costed him any momentum and Seewer knew from that moment that it might be a tough one in the 2023 season opener. The Saturday’s accident didn’t make him comfortable on Sunday and that was where his weekend more or less ended.

“The frustrating thing to start about this weekend,” Seewer said. “None of what happened in the Qualifying Race and in Race One today was in my hands. This is a tough pill to swallow. You only need to look at the second moto to see where I belong. I didn’t do anything special to finish inside the top-three, I just rode my race. I think if the RAM Qualifying Race ended differently, I would have been able to get better starts and potentially fight for the win. Anyway, the result is not the end of the world, there are still a lot of points on the table, so it’s fine.”

When the MXGP riders headed to round two in Sardinia, Seewer had some confidence, but despite showing blistering speed, more crashes and unfortunate situations saw him finish in sixth overall with 6-7 scores. Not what he wanted and not what his fans expected.

“This is Riola, one of the toughest GPs of the year, and for me, my result on paper is not even close to what I am looking for. But, all in all, I had the pace. I did everything I could, I wasn’t “off” or anything, I was still up there battling up front, but something didn’t click. I gave all I had. I rode well, I enjoyed the track but I think the others were running a good pace too and maybe taking more risks. Still, I took solid points, and I am just looking forward to the next rounds now.”

And now, onto Switzerland, a race he has enjoyed in the past with success and a race that might show exactly where he is when it comes to making up that points gap to Prado and Herlings. Don’t be surprised if he stands on top of the podium, or at least on one of the top three steps.

MXGP back in Switzerland with the third round in Frauenfeld

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 5 April 2023 – The FIM Motocross World Championship third round is coming back to Switzerland after 4 years and it will mark the first stop of the season in Mainland Europe. MXGP is heading to Frauenfeld for the MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS on the 8th and 10th April, being Easter day of break on the Sunday 9th.

The riders will come back to a brand-new circuit at Frauenfeld which will add to the challenge as they will have to adapt to the new design. The Swiss track has hosted the MXGP series three years in a row between 2016 to 2018 and it was pretty successful for KTM in the MXGP class as Antonio Cairoli won in 2016 while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings won back-to-back in 2017 and 2018.

Along with MXGP and MX2, the supporting classes will also be competing in Switzerland with the second round of the FIM Women's Motocross World Championship and the first round of the season for the FIM Motocross European Championship EMX125 presented by FMF.

In WMX, RFME GASGAS WMX Team’s Daniella Guillen won her first GP of her career in Sardinia with a 2-1 and showing a strong and skilful riding throughout the weekend. Other riders to watch will be the young Lotte Van Drunen who started the season incredibly by winning the first race of the season and finishing second overall while Ceres 71 Racing’s Nancy Van de Ven showed that we can count on her to be competing for the top spot again this year as she finished second in race 2, despite a crash on race 1 and DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan going 4-3 and the third place overall.

In EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing, it will be really open this year with many new riders coming to the category for the first time. This first round will be a good time to get some clues on who will be fighting for the top spots this season.

This season, the circuit of Frauenfeld will be hosting MXGP of Switzerland Presented by iXS for the 4th time in its history. The last edition was 4 years ago and Jeffrey Herlings was the one who took the victory in front of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre and Clement Desalle. The Dutchman was on his way to win his first World Title in the MXGP class.

Coming into the third round of the season, we are already seeing that this season is going to be very competitive with many riders showing great skills and determination throughout the first two rounds. Herlings is coming to Switzerland with plenty of confidence as he won the last GP in Sardinia, winning his 100th GP along the way. The ‘bullet’ is showing that he is already up to speed after missing the 2022 season and being 2ndoverall in the Championship standing.

The Red Plate holder Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado has been riding superbly so far, taking the maximum points in RAM Qualifying Races in Argentina and Sardinia and winning 2 races out of 4, the Spaniard is on a great form and is determined to win his first GP this season. Having won the last edition in Switzerland in MX2 will certainly help him in his quest to keep the Red Plate.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff, 2nd on the last podium in Sardinia with a 5-1 has shown that he is finding his rhythm on his new bike while his teammate Maxime Renaux and Romain Febvre, 3rd and 4th in the Championships respectively, both showed loads of quality ridings since the season started and will definitely fight for the top spots this season even if they both narrowly missed the podium so far in 2023.

After winning his first GP in Argentina Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez was not at his best during the MXGP of Sardegna as the Spaniard crashed few times and could not find a way to ride back up the ranking order. He will surely look for redemption in Switzerland and be prepared to display a great performance this weekend.

Riding at home this week, Jeremy Seewer from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team is the rider who will want to get back to the top after combining high and lows so far this season with 17-3 in Argentina and 7-6 in Sardinia. The swiss was often fighting for the first places but crashed too many times to remain consistent. Riding in front of his fans could be the perfect opportunity to really kick-start his season.

The other home riders Team Ship To Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod and JK Racing Yamaha’s Kevin Brumann will be the ones to be carried by the home crowd and could use that to get some great opportunities to score big points. Guillod with two top 20s so far has shown some glimpse of his potential and could capitalise on riding at home while Brumann could really kickstarts his first full MXGP season this weekend at Frauenfeld.

In 2018, it was Jorge Prado who clinched the victory in Frauenfeld in front of Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass and Hunter Lawrence. With none of these riders still present in this category, the 2023 edition of the MXGP of Switzerland will see a new MX2 winner.

The start of the 2023 campaign in MX2 has seen the near total dominance of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts so far. The Belgian won the first 2 GPs with a perfect 1-1 in Argentina and 2-1 in Sardinia, along with topping both RAM Qualifying Races. However, like Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant fighting with Geerts in Argentina, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf showed his great potential in Sardinia as he went 1-2 and could have been the one to win the GP. Benistant also got to the last step of the podium for the second time this season. This demonstrates that de Wolf and Benistant are up there with Geerts and could be the ones to upset the Belgian’s lead so far.

Just behind the trio are teammates Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Simon Laegenfelder, 4th and 5th respectively, who also have shown that they can compete at time with the front three. Adamo is consistent so far with 2nd place overall in Argentina and 6th in Sardinia while Laengenfelder improved on his 7th place on the first round by going 3-7 in Sardinia and getting the 4thoverall.

The other riders who could well battling for the top points will be F&H Kawasaki MX2 Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts who are 6th, 7th and 8th in the Championships respectively and have all found themselves fighting at the top at one point during the first two rounds. They all could use their experience of this beginning of the campaign to find the ways to move up in the Championship standing after Switzerland.

Championship Standings

1. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 117 points;
2. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 87 p.;
3. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 86 p.;
