MXGP Excited for the Return of MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 15 March 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship heads overseas for the first time in 2022, as the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina returns in Villa La Angostura.

Villa La Angostura is a resort town on Nahuel Huapi Lake in Patagonia based in the Neuquen province. It’s known for its Alpine-style wooden buildings, beautiful mountains, lakes and forests that surround the area and for much of the paddock, the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina is among the top favourites on the racing calendar.

The MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina first made its appearance on the MXGP calendar back in 2015, with the inaugural event won by Max Nagl and Dylan Ferrandis in MXGP and MX2. Meanwhile the last time that MXGP was hosted in Villa La Angostura, was 2019 and that time around it was Antonio Cairoli and Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who were victorious after going 1-1 in MXGP and MX2.

This year will be the sixth time that the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina will take place and as it stands Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass have the most wins in Villa La Angostura, with two apiece, but with Herlings out with injury and Jonass having issues with his stitches post-surgery, this leaves Gajser with the chance to and claim the third victory and take the number one spot.

In MXGP, all eyes will be on Tim Gajser who will aim to keep his winning streak and make it three on the bounce, after Grand Prix victories in Matterley Basin and Mantova. Gajser is a favourite heading into the third round, and will no doubt be aiming for a clean 1-1 result which he is yet to achieve this season and having won in Argentina previously in 2017 and 2018 will hopefully be an added boost of confidence and motivation for him.

Of course, as always, we can expect previous rounds’ podium finishers Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer to be right there at the front challenging for the win.

Prado has consistently been fighting at the sharp end in the first races and his starts have been a huge advantage for him – something that is bound to come in useful again in Argentina. Meanwhile Seewer started his 2022 campaign with a podium in Matterley Basin, but had a tough weekend in Mantova, a track where he claimed his first ever MXGP Grand Prix win. Though after the difficult results in Lombardia, he will be more fired up than ever to bounce back and put it on the box.

And lastly, Renaux has turned heads by claiming his first qualifying race win on his first outing in the premiere class in Great Britain and then followed that up with his first podium just two GP’s into his rookie season in Mantova, which he will be aiming to build upon and fight for a spot with the winners again this weekend.

A face to look out for this weekend is Beta SDM Corse rider Jeremy Van Horebeek. The Belgian currently sits eighth in the world championship standings after two top 10 overall finishes in the first two rounds. In 2019, Van Horebeek was third on the box next to Cairoli and Gajser, so a strong finish this time with Beta is not out of the picture.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers came close to a spot on the podium in Mantova, for the first time since his MX2 days. He placed fourth overall and I

it would be nice to see if he can carry this momentum and deliver a solid result and finish inside the top three.

DIGA Procross KTM Racing Team’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Team HRC’s Mitch Evans were among podium finishers in Villa La Angostura back in 2019. The duo finished second and third on the MX2 podium which will bring back nice memories for them.

This year, Olsen gave a glimpse of what’s to come in Mantova, especially the second race as he made his way up the order to fourth. Meanwhile Evans is continuing his comeback after injury and is still building to finish inside the top 10.

There’s still no news on when Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre will make their return.

In MX2, there is a new championship leader in the form of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had the perfect weekend in Mantova, going 1-1 and claiming the red plate for the first time since 2020. He is among the top favourites for this weekend, but there is also Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who is a big threat. The German is second in the standings, just four points behind Geerts and after missing out on a spot inside the top three in Mantova, Längenfelder will be wanting to get on the podium again and follow up his incredible performance in Matterley Basin.

But all eyes are likely to be on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle as everyone is eager to know how the Frenchman is, after his huge off in Lombardia and what the consequences of that could really be or whether he just got lucky. This season everyone expected Vialle to dominate from the get-go and that has not happened which is making things a lot interesting in the title chase. The MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina is a chance for Vialle to take the reins once again, but he will need two clean races in order to maximise points and move up from fourth in the standings.

Other riders in that chase are Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf, who has consistently fought at the sharp end and SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery rider Andrea Adamo who is still on the high of securing his first ever MX2 podium and doing so on home soil.

Other big threats include F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo who has stepped it up this season as he made his return to the MX2 category. Horgmo placed eighth overall in Great Britain and followed that up with fifth overall in Lombardia, which shows that he is building for that top three score and it could be coming this weekend.

There to challenge him, as they have been in the first two GP’s are Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup, Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee’s Isak Gifting and Ship to Cycle Honda SR’s Stephen Rubini. Currently they stand eighth, ninth and tenth in the standings and have been right there inside the top 10 during both races so far.

Honda 114 Motorsports Hakon Fredriksen has been building too. He finished his first MX2 Grand Prix in 14th while Mantova was much better for him, where he was sixth behind Horgmo.

Meanwhile for Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini is yet to show some strong results in 2022. His first two GP’s were far from what he may have expected and it is not entirely clear why the Italian has been struggling so much. But a new weekend is a new opportunity to bounce back and get on the right track, as we all know what Guadagnini can do, last season was a great example of that.

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 14 March 2022 – Infront Moto Racing is delighted to continue the successful partnership between MXGP and 6D Helmets with a multi-year agreement in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Jeremy Seewer: Building In 2022

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Jeremy Seewer might want to leave the 2021 season behind. Having finished second in the world in 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2020, the rider from Switzerland probably hoped for an upgrade in the world rankings eventually, but sickness, a bout of Covid and other issues saw him finish in fourth place in the MXGP championship points last year.

With a good off-season though, Seewer arrived at the opening round of the 2022 season in England with high hopes and huge motivation to take it to four-time world motocross champion Tim Gajser. With Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre not racing due to injury, the job should have been easier than it was.

“Our winter preparation was super short. I was happy with how it went; I had a lot of fun. Even though there was almost no ‘off-season’ I felt really strong, relaxed and fully recovered both mentally and physically, so I was ready to start the new season. This year I want to be as far up front as possible and fighting for podium finishes every weekend. Obviously, I want some GP wins, because the one I had in Arco last year felt amazing, and I want more of this feeling. I am feeling super on the bike. We didn’t make too many changes, but what we did adapt is going in a good direction. I feel good in all areas of my life, with the bike, on the bike, and especially with the people I have around me in ‘Team 91’, so I’m ready!”

Sure enough, the British GP was a solid performance, with a near victory in one of the races and a final finishing place on the podium. A great start to what Seewer hoped would be a highlight reel on his CV. The perfect start to 2022 and confidence and motivation to head to round two in Italy with another great results.

“It was a really positive day. I’ve never started the season this far up front. I’ve never started the season on the podium, so it’s pretty good. It shows I’m ready. I enjoyed the racing. The track was difficult but really nice, and the sun was super low, so it was quite tricky. I’m super happy, except for the first race when I thought I had the win in the pocket, but I lost the front and then caught some ruts, and my legs weren’t long enough to save me. I am on the podium, I’m fit and I’m happy with everything and the team around me, so it’s all positive. I’m ready for more.”

In Italy, again it was a small mistake that saw him drop from the lead of a race and crashing in both races, but Seewer looked strong at times and can take a lot of confidence from his showing. Fourth place in the championship behind Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado and Maxime Renaux might be good for some riders, but Seewer wants a lot more than fourth position.

“There were some positives to take away from round one. My speed is very good, starts are good, we are consistently there, I'm feeling good, and starting off on the podium. There were some mistakes made and a couple of things I need to work on. I like Mantova, but it isn’t my favourite track, but for some reason, I always do well there, so I guess it suits me. I actually feel really good with everything, but I just couldn’t make it happen. Made some stupid mistakes, but this is Mantova, many square edge bumps and riding with a scoop tyre on this surface. Looking at the positives, I was at the front of the start in both races but messed it up twice with small tip overs in both races. It’s tough to come back through the pack on this track, so I did well to pass so many riders, but it wasn’t enough. It’s quite frustrating, but the season is long, and I am still in the game, so that is the most important thing.”

Now heading to Argentina in a little less than two weeks, the Yamaha factory man can look to get back on the box, build some confidence for the European return and some tracks he really enjoys. For now, though, more work and get rid of those silly little mistakes that have cost him moto wins and a handful of points.

Fox Holeshot Films: MXGP of Lombardia

MATOVA (Lombardia) 6 March 2022 – MXGP is excited to continue the Fox Holeshot competition for the 2022 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, together with MXGP partner Fox.

How does the competition work?

Every Grand Prix race, during both MXGP and MX2 races, the rider who crosses the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner secures the Fox Holeshot and receives one point. At the end of the season, the two riders, one per category, with the most Fox Holeshot points will win the mega prize!

At the MXGP of Lombardia we saw Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado add a third Fox Holeshot to his growing tally in the first race, meanwhile in MXGP race two, it was JM Honda Racing’s Henry Jacobi who was flying out of the gate and got his first Fox Holeshot of 2022. Meanwhile in MX2, we saw Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle assert his Fox Holeshot title from 2021, as he took both Fox Holeshot’s in the races.

As it stands, Prado leads the Fox Holeshot classifications in MXGP, while in MX2, Vialle and Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder are tied with two points each.

The Fox Holeshot competition continues in a couple of weeks’ time at the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina.

Jorge Prado Voted Best Rider Sponsored by Athena at the MXGP of Lombardia

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 7 March 2022 – For the 2022 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, we see the return of a very exciting competition, that is the Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena.

Throughout the season fans have the opportunity to cast their votes race-by-race and decide who becomes the ‘Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena’ in MXGP at the end of this year’s championship.

Votes are tallied at every Grand Prix, with the ‘Best Rider of the GP’ being chosen during each event of 2022. The rider who is voted the most times as the best rider, will walk away with the ultimate prize and be presented with the special award for ‘Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena’!

How to vote:

Every Grand Prix Sunday a dedicated post is shared on MXGP’s official Instagram page under which fans can comment who their favourite rider of the weekend is. This competition is only for MXGP riders and the voting closes at 8pm on Sunday.

The comments are then counted and the rider with the most votes is chosen as the best rider of that GP.

During the MXGP of Lombardia in Mantova, third place podium finisher Jorge Prado of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing received the most votes on the post shared on MXGP’s Instagram page and therefore was declared the ‘Best Rider of the MXGP of Lombardia’. The Spaniard received 42.8% of the votes, while Grand Prix winner Tim Gajser from Team HRC came in second, with 34.2% ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux who received 12.3%.

Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado are now tied in the competition after two rounds, though with 18 more races to go, the door is still open for the ultimate prize!
