HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF SPAIN

INTU XANADU' - ARROYOMOLINOS (Spain), 9 October 2020 – The FIM Motocross World Championship continues this weekend, with the return of the MXGP of Spain at the brand-new intu Xanadú – Arroyomolinos circuit.

Intu Xanadú – Arroyomolinos, based just 23km from downtown Madrid, will host the motocross world championship for the very first time, as the hard pack circuit will welcome the fastest riders in the world for two epic days of racing.

Things are getting exciting in the MXGP and MX2 classes, as Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle lead the way by 11 and 46 points. Though with 7 rounds left to go, it’s still all to play for, as Antonio Cairoli, Jeremy Seewer, Jago Geerts and Maxime Renaux are still fighting for their chance to go for the title this season.

At the previous Grand Prix in Mantova, the overall victory went to Gajser, who took to the top step of the box for the very first time this season. Meanwhile in MX2, Jago Geerts was successful in making his comeback to the podium, after some unlucky races, as he won the overall during the MXGP of Europe.

Now we continued the battles with the epic MXGP of Spain, which is one of the most anticipated events of this season!

Spanish fans will be able to follow their local hero, Jorge Prado, from home as the popular Spanish channel, TV Galicia, who have been following the FIM Motocross World Championship since the beginning of the 2020 season, will showcase the MXGP races LIVE from Arroyomolinos, this Sunday!

MXGP set for the return of the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend!

INTU XANADU' - ARROYOMOLINOS (Spain) 8 October 2020 – The FIM Motocross World Championship is set for the Spanish Grand Prix, this weekend, as the MXGP of Spain makes its much awaited return to the MXGP racing calendar.

The last time MXGP headed to Spain was back in 2018, when the popular training facility Redsand, hosted the third round of the series. That time around, it was Antonio Cairoli and Pauls Jonass, who were victorious in MXGP and MX2.

This will be the first time that the motocross world championship will head to the brand-new intu Xanadú – Arroyomolinos circuit. Based just 23km from downtown Madrid, the venue is located next to intu Xanadú is one of the biggest commercial centres in Europe. The Madrid region offers many famous historical tourist attractions, such as castles, gastronomy, art and of course shopping, along with the good weather and high quality of life.

The circuit itself, is hardpack on a clay terrain. The track features a good combination between long and high jumps, along with different kind of corners. Deep ruts are expected this weekend, with many corners filled with different lines for the riders to choose from.

Alongside the 12th round of the MXGP and MX2 championships, the Spanish GP will also see rounds 6 and 7 of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and the EMX250 Championships. Following the new format for this season, only, the EMX riders will have the chance to ride the circuit first, as their races will take place on Saturday, while the MXGP and MX2 riders will race on Sunday only.

In EMX125, Fantic Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi will no doubt be looking to get back to winning ways, after a tough round of Europe just a week ago. Meanwhile RFME GasGas MX Junior Team’s David Braceras, Gerard Congost and Guillem Farres, will be looking for their own success at their home round.

In EMX250, series leader, Thibault Benistant of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing will be eager to add more race wins, to his already existing 5 wins and 4 overall round victories. Though Mattia Guadagnini of Husqvarna Junior Racing Maddii, won’t make it easy for the Frenchman, as he enters the Spanish round, coming off the back of two consecutive overall wins. Of course, the likes of Oriol Oliver, Mario Lucas, Samuel Nilsson and more will be looking to do well at home.

And with this being a brand-new venue, history is just waiting to be written, as we find out this weekend, who will be victorious for the very first time on this new Spanish circuit.

Coming into this round, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is the current championship leader, by an 11-point margin over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, with Jeremy Seewer of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing, a further 19 points behind.

So far this season, Gajser has won a total of 8 races, the most out of any of the other riders in the category. Though those race wins have not translated into overall victories, as the Slovenian claimed his first GP win during the MXGP of Europe, just a week ago. But he has 7 podiums to his name, so he would be a safe bet for the podium this weekend in Spain and with the confidence of his overall victory last weekend, it will be interesting to see what he can do this time around.

Of course, the rider who will receive all the attention this weekend will be the home hero, Jorge Prado of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing. It’s been two years since we’ve had a Spanish Grand Prix, and for Prado it will be his first home event, as he takes on the premier class. Though fans are not permitted to attend, this won’t stop Prado putting in a stellar performance, as he chases another possible overall, to write himself in the history of this circuit.

With 11 Fox holeshots this season alone, there is no doubt that the likelihood of seeing the Spaniard out in front, is very high. And while this is his rookie season, he already has 5 podium finishes to his name, including an overall victory and 2 race wins.

Then there’s Antonio Cairoli, who is just 11 points shy of the championship lead and a potential 10th world title. While he only has 2 race wins to his name, he has however been consistently battling in the top 3, which just goes to show that the Italian could be more focused on the championship and picking up a good amount of points each time, rather than risking it all for the win.

Another rider who will want to impress this weekend is Jeremy Seewer. Currently third in the points, Seewer has been ticking off some firsts in the last 6 GPs, as he took his first race win in Faenza and then his first Grand Prix overall in Mantova, during the MXGP of Lombardia. Now heading into round 12, for Seewer points will be vital, as his last several races have been made tougher by small mistakes and crashes which has allowed Gajser and Cairoli to get ahead a little bit.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre will arrive in Spain with a confidence boost from the previous couple of GP’s, where not only did he take a race win but also his first overall of the season. He will no doubt chase top positions, but the starts will once again be crucial.

For Jose Butron, this upcoming Grand Prix will be a nice trip back home. Much like Prado and a couple of wildcard contestants, Ander Valentin and David Jimenez Vaquero, he will be keen to put on a good performance on home soil. Once known to be a top 10 regular, it will be good to see Butron battling inside the top 10 once again.

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 399 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 388 p.; 3. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 369 p.; 4. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 341 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, GAS), 341 p.; 6. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 304 p.; 7. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 285 p.; 8. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 263 p.; 9. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 262 p.; 10. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, HUS), 248 p.;

Bottom Photos: 1. Tim Gajser; 2. Jorge Prado

In MX2, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle heads into the Spanish GP with a 46-point lead in the championship, with 7 more rounds left to go. There have only been 4 overall GP winners this season so far, and Vialle has claimed 4 of those 11 victories and 10 race wins. His starts have always been good too, though they suffered a little during the last couple of races, but he is one rider you can count on to get in the lead early on, and this weekend it’s exactly what he’ll want to do.

While Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts will want to do the same, as he will chase his 5th Grand Prix win of the year, and look to get into those double figures, in terms of race wins. The races in Faenza and Mantova were a mixture for the Belgian, though he finished the trio of races in Mantova (the MXGP of Europe) with a race win and the overall, so no doubt he will be feeling confident going into this round.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jed Beaton have been more consistent race by race, as the pair made several podium appearances during the last 6 GP’s. Olsen now has 4 podiums to his name, two of them overall victories, while Beaton has had his chance at success too as he won a race in Mantova and took 2nd behind his teammate on the podium during the MXGP of Lombardia. And with the way things are going for the pair, it would be good to see them battling inside the top 5 as they have been doing over the last several races.

Meanwhile, Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori J1 Racing’s Maxime Renaux will no doubt enter this round with some new-found motivation, from his recent signing with factory Yamaha next season. Renaux will of course aim for the podium, and with his success in Faenza, this much harder terrain here in Spain, could be a better fit for the Frenchman as he looks to get back on the podium.

SDM Corse rider Ruben Fernandez will be keen to put in two solid rides this Sunday, as he gears up for his home Grand Prix. Fernandez is currently 10th in the FIM MX2 World Championship standings and has had some strong rides thus far. His best result came in Latvia, where he finished 3rd in race one during the MXGP of Latvia and in the rounds that followed, he had some more consistent battles inside the top 10, so it will be good to see if he can step things up on home soil.

Meanwhile Yago Martinez and Simeo Ubach will be looking to impress during their wildcard appearances this weekend, as they look to give the MX2 World Championship a go.

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tom Vialle (FRA, KTM), 478 points; 2. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 432 p.; 3. Jed Beaton (AUS, HUS), 348 p.; 4. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 341 p.; 5. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 311 p.; 6. Roan Van De Moosdijk (NED, KAW), 293 p.; 7. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 287 p.; 8. Conrad Mewse (GBR, KTM), 252 p.; 9. Mathys Boisrame (FRA, KAW), 234 p.; 10. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, YAM), 208 p.

Prado heads home to Spain

There is no doubt, the greatest Spanish motocross rider of all time is current sensation Jorge Prado. The 19-year-old MXGP rookie already has a Grand Prix victory to his name in 2020 and added that MXGP win to his 31 MX2 overall victories. A two-time World MX2 champion everyone knew when Prado entered the big bike class, he would be a success and he hasn’t disappointed.

Having suffered from injuries in the pre-season, the Spaniard came into the series a little brittle, and his fourth place in the MXGP championship points isn’t really an indication of where he should be and where he is going.

Since the series started in England Prado has amassed 341 points, but nobody denies he could easily catch the three men above him in the championship points if he gets a run of victories. Last weekend at the Mantova circuit in Italy he didn’t have it all his own way, as a 3-17 performance slowed his progress a little.

“The day started quite good,” Prado said. “I gave myself some work when I stalled the bike; five guys passed me and I had to get them back to finally finish 3rd, which was OK. I felt good but we changed a couple of things for the second race and on the sighting lap I thought ‘this is my race’ because I was feeling fit, recovered and that the bike was better.”

While that third-place finish in the opening race gave him huge confidence, a crash in the second race completely destroyed his weekend, and now the teenager will go to his home Grand Prix in Spain with a lot to prove once again.

“I had a perfect jump out of the gate and Tim [Gajser] passed me. I was close but his roost blinded me for a moment, and I could not see an edge on the berm coming out of the chicane. I hit it with my back wheel, and it sent me sideways. I banged my hip on the bar and also my head on the ground. I was last when I stood up and tried to restart. There was a problem with the front wheel because it was locking a bit on some jumps and also in some corners. The front brake was damaged as well so I could not use it. So, the rest of the race was really difficult. I did what I could, and I actually don’t know where I finished! We’ll heal-up this week and try to be ready for Spain.”

No doubt, racing at home will give Prado a great feeling and maybe even extra confidence. There is no doubt he can still be the 2020 World MXGP champion, but again, he will need to put together two solid races in Spain and take that momentum to Lommel, Belgium a week later for the triple Grand Prix in the deep sand.

Located close to Lake Garda, the MXGP in Pietramurata has always hosted some of the best racing of the year, take for example last season’s showdown between Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli that had us all on the edge of our seats.

The first time that the FIM Motocross World Championship visited Trentino was back in 1987 with the 125cc championship that was won by Massimo Contini. Since 2012 the MXGP has consistently been held there with the premier class being dominated by Antonio Cairoli, Clement Desalle, Max Nagl, Jeffrey Herlings and Tim Gajser.

The 2020 MXGP will also run alongside the EMX Open and WMX Championships during the first event, while the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing will run with the EMX Open class for the last two rounds.

This season the racing is bound to be as intense, with a field of riders all capable of challenging for the win. Make sure you’re there to find out!

HRC Renews Contracts with Tim Gajser and Mitch Evans

Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) announced that it has renewed its contracts with Tim Gajser (24 years old, Slovenia) and Mitch Evans (21 years old, Australia), for multiple years. Both riders are currently competing for Team HRC in the FIM Motocross World Championship Premier MXGP Class.

After becoming the FIM Motocross World Championship MX2 world champion in 2015, Tim Gajser joined Honda’s Team HRC factory team, to compete in, and win the premier MXGP class. He won his second MXGP title in 2019, and is currently leading the 2020 championship, aiming for his second consecutive, and third total, title in the premier class.

Mitch Evans entered the FIM Motocross World Championship MX2 class in 2019, to finish an impressive 11th in his debut year. In 2020 he joined Team HRC to race in the MXGP class and is currently ranked 11th.

Tim Gajser | Team HRC

“I’m super happy to extend my contract with Honda and Team HRC. I’ve been here for the past seven years and to me this team feels like a family so I’m really happy to stay. We will keep giving our best and we are all excited and ready to fight for the title every year and I believe this is the best place for me to be, especially on board the Honda CRF450RW. It is great to confirm this and continue our partnership that has already seen us become multi-time world champions.”

Mitch Evans | Team HRC

“I’m very happy to have the deal done and in place. It now allows me to focus on the rest of the season and putting in the best results possible. It also gives me a platform to build upon for the future, and I feel like we’ve built a good relationship already and I’m excited for that to continue. I want to keep improving and working with this team and riding the Honda CRF450RW and I feel Team HRC has proven itself as the best team for me to achieve my dreams of challenging for a world title.”

Yoshishige Nomura | HRC President

“I am very pleased that Tim Gajser and Mitchell Evans will continue to fight with us in the MXGP class for next season. Due to COVID-19, this season has been competed on a very tight schedule. Even so, Tim [Gajser] is fighting to win the championship, and Mitchell [Evans] is nearly in the top 10. Team HRC and our riders will fight for the championship next year and live up to our fans’ expectations. We look forward to your continued support.”
