Short title:
MXGP 219 Announcement

Febvre Returns From Injury in Portugal

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Romain Febvre suffered a broken ankle at the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Patagonio-Argentina and subsequently missed four rounds of the championship. The team are pleased to announce that he has now been deemed fit to return to racing at the Portuguese Grand Prix this weekend, May 19th.

Febvre won the first Qualifying Race of the season and was in top form, ready to vie for the coveted MXGP title. Unfortunately, the former World Champion fell in the second race at the opening Grand Prix and suffered two fractures to his Talus (ankle). The injury was surgically repaired in Belgium on March 13th.

Two months have passed, and the 26-year-old Frenchman has now completed an intensive rehabilitation program and been medically cleared to race. He has been back on the bike for two-weeks already and will line up onboard his YZ450FM in Agueda, Portugal, at the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

As one of only three Qualifying Race winners this season, his return to action is greatly anticipated.

“I’m excited to start racing again. My foot is not yet 100% as it is expected to take a few more weeks for the mobility to improve. I still have pain sometimes, but it is not too bad. I think it has been 9-weeks since the operation and I realise that I need a starting point to return to racing, even if it is not 100% because there is no guaranteed time frame in which it will be 100%. I can’t wait for it, because I will lose too much time. I look forward to returning in Portugal. I like the track there, so I look forward to rediscovering my speed and to start rebuilding my race condition.” - Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Romain Febvre

Pauls Jonass – Podium Man

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider Pauls Jonass might not have started 2019 as he had wanted, due to a major injury in 2018 and a long recovery period, his off-season preparation was to say the least, very poor.

Now, five rounds into the MXGP Championship the Latvian has found his mojo and claimed his first ever podium finish in the 450 class.

Having struggled to make the top three in the first four rounds the Husky riders were put through some difficult training programs, and it seems the hard work paid off in round five at Mantova.

“First of all,” Jonass said. “After Trentino we went on a tough program, tough training and I was feeling maybe 70%, because the training was so tough, and I was so tired I could hardly hold onto the bike in practice. I also got some arm-pump. After Italy we improved the bike a lot and also myself. I just need to get that click and put it together. Once I get that click, then the results also come better and better.”

So finally, close to his best racing condition, Jonass went into last weekend with confidence that a good finish was in the cards. He could never have expected a podium finish though.

“This weekend has been really great. I think the qualification race, even if I didn’t get the result I hoped for, was really important for me. Getting a good start and running close to the front really gave me a lot of confidence, which I took into today’s racing. Of course, the track was muddy, but I like the mud, so I felt good. I didn’t get perfect starts, but I managed to make some quick passes and avoid making any big mistakes. Getting the runner-up result in the first race felt so, so good. The track was a little more one-lined in the second race but again I felt good. I felt like I was a little quicker than Bogers, but I got sideways a few times trying to pass him, so I decided not to take any more chances and just settle down. Getting a good overall result is much more important. To finish second overall, to get my first MXGP podium, to be stood on the box with Cairoli, it’s a very special moment for me. I feel like something has clicked in a positive way now with racing a 450. I’m not at 100% yet but I’m feeling a lot more confident and this result gives me a lot of motivation to keep working hard.”

Now with the MXGP series moving to Agueda, Portugal this coming weekend, Jonass will again reset, and feel confident that his return to the podium will come a lot quicker. The red clay has often been a good stop for the former MX2 World Champion, so don’t be surprised if he also leaves Portugal with a big smile and some champagne.

Kras and Guadagnini Top Two-Stroke European Racing in Lombardia

MANTOVA (Lombardia, Italy) 12 May 2019 – Europe’s Two-Stroke categories of EMX2T and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing rang in the Lombardia weekend with two days of racing action topped by Ecomaxx Fuels Mike Kras and Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini.

The rippers of FIM Europe made two stroke music for the thousands of motocross fans present in Mantova this weekend. Through two days of racing the conditions can only be definable as polar opposite with the lone ambiguous adjective being challenging.

The younger and smaller cc two stroke of EMX 125 Presented by FMF Racing also dealt with the same challenging conditions as even the MXGP and MX2 riders. In a class that is one of the most difficult to be consistent in even with perfect conditions Team Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini did the seemingly impossible with double race wins.

Race 1 was led by WZ-Racing’s Simon Laegenfelder for the first 9 laps while Guadagnini calmly worked his way past RFME MX Junior Team’s Orio Oliver to get into second. Only a lap after losing second Oliver dropped a handful of sports first to KINI KTM Junior Pro Team’s Mike Gwerder.

Gwereder held 3rd for 3 laps before A1M Husqvarna’s Jorgen-Matthias Talviku took over. The next lap was Guadagnini’s turn to make a pass and which he did successfully. The final five laps belonged to the Italian who took the win 8.6 seconds in front of Laegenfelder and 30 seconds over Talviku.

Race 2 was under far more demanding conditions today but Guadagnini made it look even easier leading from lap 1 over F4E Racing KTM’s Guillem Farres Plaza and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf.

Guadagnini led de Wolf fell and dropped to 6th while Plaza’s F4E Racing KTM teammate Eddie Jay Wade took over third. With only four laps to go Wade took over the role as lead team member as he swapped positions with Plaza.

Guadagnini’s dominate and veteran like performance saw him take both his 2nd race win of the weekend and as a result the overall. Simon Laegenefelder took 2nd overall as his 2-7 finishes beat out Wade’s third overall scoring 12-2 results. Guadagnini’s points lead is now 35 as the class takes one week off before returning alongside the MXGP of France at Saint Jean d’Angely.

Rising to the occasion in the bigger bore 250 two stroke category was Team Ecomaxx Fuels’ Mike Kras. After suffering a scoreless 2nd race at the season opener in the UK, Kras had nearly two months to prepare for the return of racing.

Kras’ preparation was clear as he led Saturday’s race 1 from the first lap ahead of Todd Kellet and fellow Ecomaxx Fuels rider Youri Van T Ende while the points leader and Kras’ longtime rival Brad Anderson crashed his Verde Substance KTM on the start.

Italy’s Mario Tamai had a good home showing in 3rd Saturday after passing Van T Ende but the UK’s Brad Todd was the man making moves as he moved from 7th to take 3rd from Tamai. Kras however took the win after leading every lap over Kellet with Todd 3rd while Anderson recovered from starting outside the top 20 to finish 13th.

Today’s Race 2 brought a whole new challenge as overnight storms dowsed the circuit in relentless rain. Perhaps better accustom to the wet conditions was Anderson who, though battered and bruised from Saturday, led the first lap.

Running 2nd was Belgium’s Erik Willems who not only took the lead from Anderson but put the Brit face first into the soggy sand. Anderson got back up in 5th but had Kras just ahead in 4th. While Kras pushed forward Anderson followed before taking second from away from the Dutchman in lap 6.

Only a lap after getting by Kras, Anderson took the lead back from Willems and Kras followed. Kras made stabs at Anderson as the laps were ticked away but wisely settled for second in the race instead of risking all. Although Anderson won Race 2 the overall went to Kras who took 14 points out of Anderson’s 28 point lead.

Anderson did however still manage to get on the podium in 3rd position while Brad Todd split the pair in 2nd overall.

Cairoli and Prado Reign Victorious in Mantova

MANTOVA (Lombardia, Italy) 12 May 2019 – The 5th round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship in Mantova, Italy has been one to remember. While the rain continues to fall at the Monster Energy MXGP of Lombardia, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s dynamic duo of Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado reigned in their own right taking the respective MXGP and MX2 category overall wins this weekend.

With MXGP returning to the Mantova venue for the first time since the 2016 season, the world’s best community of fans watched on as the world’s best athletes showed their skills on the soggy sand. While the winds of change brought dramatic conditions today they also provided epic action in a race where anything was possible.

After evening storms yesterday’s hard and dry surface was nowhere to be found but Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli let it have no effect on his results starting race one with the Fox Holeshot.

Cairoli’s biggest competitor as of late, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser had a good jump off the line but lost traction on the front of his Honda heading into turn one which sent him over the bars along with several others.

While Cairoli had the lead from the first turn fellow Italian Ivo Monticelli and his Standing Construct KTM teammate Max Anstie where in 2nd and 3rd. A mistake from Monticelli saw Anstie go past almost taking both down while Cairoli tipped over just a corner later. The bobble from Cairoli put Anstie on the Sicilian’s rear wheel but quick to regroup the #222 pulled back away.

Gajser’s race one went from bad to worse when he was clipped by another rider midair causing the Slovenian to resample the soil. The strong riding of Monticelli in third was all for nothing when his bike gave out just as Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass took the spot halfway through the race.

More crashes from Gajser held him to 10th while both Jonass and his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna teammate Arminas Jasikonis passed Anstie. The first checkered flag then went out with Cairoli taking the win 10 seconds ahead of Jonass, Jasikonis, Anstie, and Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle who rounded out the top five just ahead of Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin.

Race 2 again saw Cairoli with the FOX Holeshot, his 7th of 2019, while Gajser came away clean but behind Cairoli was Paulin and Team HRC’s Brian Bogers. Monticelli again had bad luck crashing in turn 2 and pulling out of the race.

Not long after Monticelli’s mishap his teammate Max Anstie crashed together with RFX KTM’s Shaun Simpson. With Anstie also pulling out of the race Glenn Coldenhoff was now the lone Standing Construct rider as he ran in 5th position.

Brian Bogers took over second from Paulin early in the race with Jonass also getting past the #21. Jasikonis, unlike Jonass, was unable to match his strong race 1 result as he fought from 23rd on the first lap up to 15th by the finish.

At the front it was all smooth sailing for Cairoli who recorded the perfect weekend leading 42 laps of the 42 available via 12 laps in Qualifying, 15 in Race 1, and another 15 in Race 2. The domination and double race win scored him the GP overall at Mantova for the 4th time in his career with 2 in MX2 (2007 & 2008) and 2 in MXGP (2010 and now 2019).

Taking the best single race result in his MXGP career was Bogers in second while Jonass took third, Paulin took 4th, Coldenhoff 5th, and Gajser 6th. The overall top five was filled out by Jonass taking his first MXGP Podium, Paulin, Desalle, and Coldenhoff.

Antonio Cairoli, “It is very nice to be again in Italy, despite the weather there were a lot of people today, so I am very thankful they keep coming and keep cheering. I am really happy of course, thanks to all the team for their hard work again and I am looking forward to next week in Portugal which is another track that I really like.”

Pauls Jonass, “It feels really good to be back here and especially with the MXGP guys. It has been a tough winter and a tough few months but it feels really great to be up here. We still need to keep working hard because I’m far off from my best shape but we will keep working and hopefully I can be back on the podium again soon.”

Gautier Paulin, “When the track is really rough like this you can gain a lot of points but you can also lose them. I am pretty happy, after the break we made a big step with the bike, I really feel good. Today wasn’t the result I expected but I am on the box so it is always a pleasure for my team and myself. There will be good GP’s coming and I can’t wait to get behind the gate again.”

While Cairoli dominated MXGP his young apprentice like Red Bull KTM teammate Jorge Prado took MX2 by storm. Prado took his 6th Fox Holeshot of 2019 to start race one as fellow Red Bull KTM rider Tom Vialle was second.

Several riders were caught in a first turn pile up however including Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi, and Honda 114 Motorsports’ Mitch Evans. Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin and Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts were both quick to get past Vialle and take over 2nd and 3rd while Prado led.

Vialle’s race only worsened as he fell and remounted in 18th before losing even more spots. On the contrary it was the red plate holder, Thomas Kjer Olsen, from Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing who improved as the race went on. Olsen was around 23rd on the opening lap but by lap 5 had already made his way up to 8th.

Cervellin then lost his 2nd position to Geerts and another to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton before the Italian’s bike came to a halt. Olsen decided to take advantage of his gap and use the new Goggle lane for a fresh set of vision before passing both Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Iker Larranaga and Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Maxime Renaux for 6th.

With Olsen back in 6th Prado took the race and gained 10 points in the championship standings while Geerts came across the finish 5.8 seconds later in 2nd ahead of Beaton, Team DIGA-Procross Husqvarna’s Davy Pootjes, and Hitachi KTM fueled by Milwaukee’s Bas Vaessen.

In race 2 Vialle got the better of Prado for the Fox Holeshot with Pootjes in 3rd. Prado made his way past Vialle before the end of the lap however. Olsen then passed Pootjes to get into third along with Jacobi but Pootjes quickly retook 4th from the German.

Olsen and Pootjes went on to pass Vialle while Beaton had a hard crash in 6th place. Jacobi’s bike then gave out just like many others as a result of the demanding conditions while Prado took the win ahead of Olsen, Vialle, Pootjes, and REVO Husqvarna UK’s Dylan Walsh.

The undefeated overall winner for the 4th time this season was Jorge Prado while Olsen took 2nd and Pootjes achieved his first career podium finish. The win from Prado was not enough to take over the red plate from Olsen but the gap now drops from the previous 20 points to only 7.

Jorge Prado, “It is great to come back, get on the podium, and winning the GP was very important for me, especially for my confidence after a month off. Today it was important to get a good start, I failed at that yesterday but today I got really good starts which were key to the race. It is very tough to not make mistakes, get good starts every time, and don’t crash, I just need to keep concentration to lead.”

Thomas Kjer Olsen, “Overall it was a great weekend for me, in the first race I had that problem on the start where I was down for a bit, I was pretty far behind but I was able to make up some spots in the first laps and get into to a good position pretty quick I worked into the top ten and even got into 6th. So, after being down it was pretty good for me, I even stopped to change my goggles. Overall I felt like I was riding good this weekend.

Davy Pootjes, “It is really good and I am really happy because it has been tough. This podium should have happened maybe 4 years ago but because of crashes, injuries, and some bad luck it didn’t happen. Last winter, together with DIGA Procross, we made a plan, worked really hard, and it payed off. I feel this is the place where I should be and I am not done yet.”

Second FIM presentation delivered at MXGP event in Mantova

MANTOVA (Lombardia – Italy) 12 May 2019 – Following on from the ground breaking presentation made during the opening MotoGP event in Losail, Qatar back in March, FIM President Jorge Viegas has now used the occasion of the fifth round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship in Mantova, Italy to again highlight and reinforce the important role that the International Federation plays within another highly successful series.

The FIM President addressed a large gathering that included members of the International media, plus other invited guests in the form of Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo, Youthstream CEO David Luongo FIM Board Member / FMI President Giovanni Copioli and Monster Energy MXGP of Lombardia Organizer Giovanni Pavesi plus representatives from both FIM Europe and the Mantova Circuit.

The new FIM President explained that it is his aim to champion the role of the FIM to the outside World, and to clearly show how its function is fundamental to the safe and fair running of the championship through the services, support and staff that it provides.

Mr Viegas set out the FIM’s mission within MXGP is to create the rules together with the Promoter and to apply the rules and the relevant sanctions issued by the FIM Stewards panel. The FIM is also in charge of circuit homologation, safety including all medical aspects and the antidoping programme. The FIM’s remit also covers the training of the officials, including the race director, clerk of the course, marshals, the technical and environmental stewards. This important training is conducted through FIM seminars delivered by FIM instructors around the World to teach the 100 to 120 track marshals needed during a MXGP weekend.

Particular attention is being given to the transformation and consolidation of investment to the championship in order to improve the safety and design of the circuits. This is being done by employing permanent staff to take care and oversee any changes that are required. Another area of focus is to provide medical recuperation and assistance where needed post-accident.

Having clearly set out the position of the FIM, the FIM President then invited each member of the FIM staff who were in attendance to present themselves and to explain their role within the MXGP structure. The invited speakers included:

FIM Motocross officials

Antonio Alia Portelo (ESP) - Steward / CMS Director

Ingo Partsch (AUT) - Race Director / CMS Member

Jiri Sitina (CZE) - Deputy Race Director / CMS Member

Janika Judeika (LAT) - Delegate / CMS Member

Andrew Summers (GBR) - Technical Director / CTI Member

Christopher Warren (GBR) - Chief Flag Steward / CMS Member

Martin Syrucek (CZE) - Medical Director / CMI Member

Dirk De Neve (BEL) - CMS Coordinator

FIM administration representatives:

Tony Skillington (IRL) - CEO

Jean-Paul Gombeaud (FRA) - Sports Director

Fabio Muner (ITA) - Marketing & Communications Director

Isabelle Larivière (FRA) - Communications Manager

Damiano Zamana (ITA) - Services Director

Following the presentations of each of the FIM staff, the FIM President Jorge Viegas added his own closing comment. “After my election, one of my goals was to expose the FIM to the outside World and to explain the fundamental role it plays in each championship, to ensure the safe and fair running of the championship through the services, support and staff that it provides. To do this, I am fortunate to have the support of a team of highly motivated professionals and it is for this reason that I wanted to organise this press conference to present them to you. Through our close collaboration with Youthstream the promoter of the Championship since 2003 and all the other stakeholders, together we will continue to work closely to maintain MXGP as the top class amongst the off-road disciplines.”
