New Updates to the 2019 MXGP Calendar

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino - Italy) 5th April 2019 - With the 2019 MXGP season well underway Youthstream regretfully announces that the previously anticipated 2019 MXGP of Hong Kong scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on the 22nd of September has been cancelled. The cancellation comes as a request by the organizer who is eager to refocus on holding MXGP in March 2020. Due to the timing of the cancellation no replacement will be made giving riders and teams an additional week prior to racing the final event of 2019, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.

MXGP Takes to Trentino

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino - Italy) 03 April 2019 - The 3rd of 3 back to back weekends of racing takes to Trentino, Italy for the 4th round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship this Saturday and Sunday! Set against the Dolomite Mountains of Italy the 2019 MXGP of Trentino will also host the first Italian round of three this season.

The beautiful Pietramurata venue is far from typical with its amazing location and surroundings. The circuit will be the first hard pack race of 2019 but with rain expected anything is possible. The Italian fans are expected in force as always and as some of the most passionate in the world the atmosphere created will be bar none.

This weekend’s addition classes of the FIM Europe Motocross Championship include the EMX250 category and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. The EMX250 class lasrt raced in Great Britain where Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Alberto Forato had a dominant 1-1 showing. Last weekend Forato was a wild card entry into MX2 where he scored an impressive 7thoverall. This weekend the Italian returns to the EMX250 class for the home round against 92 other entries into the class.

EMX125 presented by FMF Racing will also hold its second round in Trentino after the first take place last weekend in Valkenswaard. The category’s current points leader hails from the same Maddii Racing Husqvarna team as Forato, Mattia Guadagnini. The Italian will fight against 100 ultracompetitive entries for the second week in a row.

Continuing the home GP tradition is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli as the MXGP points leader. Cairoli has won the Trentino GP 3 times of his 6 attempts and aside his worst result of 5th he has never finished off the podium. Though the Sicilian has seen much success here the home venue is not his favorite and with the packed schedule it will be interesting to see how he handles the weekend.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser has been the fastest rider not to win this year and this is mostly due to his massive crashes at the past two rounds. Even so the Slovenian has a perfect podium record so far and with the added fans expected to make the trip across the Slovenian border Gajser is the other favorite for the win in Trentino this weekend. Gajser won the MX2 category here in 2015, reached the podium in 2016 and 2017 but finished 7th last year.

Standing Construct KTM’s Max Anstie is one to watch this weekend after leading laps in the Netherlands before a small but costly error set him back. The Brit had a top 5 result in Trentino during his 2015 MX2 campaign but with potential rain forecasted his years of British mud riding could help propel him to the podium for the first time this season.

Also worth considering is Belgium’s Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team rider Clement Desalle who took 2ndoverall last weekend and at this very GP last year. Desalle surprised even himself with the result in the Netherlands after injuring his hand one week prior. Winning the Trentino GP in 2014 and taking the past two wins on the MXGP of Russia’s similar soil don’t be surprised to see the “MX panda” back on the podium.

Belgian compatriot Jeremy van Horebeek from Honda SR Motoblouz made hard charges through the field in the Netherlands to tie in points for 3rd overall but finish 4th. Van Horebeek’s best Trentino result also comes from 2014 when he finished 2nd behind Desalle.

Additional Italian fans' favorites this week include Standing Construct KTM’s Ivo Monticelli and Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki’s Alessandro Lupino. Monticelli has looked like a new rider so far this year battling in the top ten and even proving to be a hard customer to pass in the battle for the top 5 last week.

2018 MXGP of Trentino top 3 (MXGP):

  1. Jeffrey Herlings
  2. Clement Desalle
  3. Antonio Cairoli

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 147 points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 125 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 103 p.; 4. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 102 p.; 5. The MX2 category is currently led by Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen but the return of defending MX2 Champion Jorge Prado and his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine was a dominant one last Sunday in Holland.

Prado has strong memories from Trentino as well seeing as he won his first ever MX2 overall here in 2017 then took the win again last year. In addition, Prado now considers Italy his second home as he rides and lives with the Italian based De Carli squad. All of which combined make him the favorite for this weekend.

Aside from Olsen looking to take the win away from Prado F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi will be looking for his first career win. The German has made massive strides in his riding as of late and has consistently been battling for the top 5 if not the podium so far this season. Jacobi’s career best finish prior to the 2ndoverall in Great Britain two weeks ago was his 3rd place here in 2018.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen is 2nd in the points presently but has just missed the podium with 4th place finishes at each of the first three rounds this season. Vlaanderen’s drive to improve his results by at least one position could take him even further forward this weekend.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson and Jago Geerts will be one to watch this week after Geerts reached the podium via a last lap pass on Olsen days ago. Watson currently is 5th in the points standings but one issue or another has held the British rider from reaching his full potential.

Other riders to note this weekend include the Italian entry, Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin and newly signed BUD Racing Kawasaki rider Mitchell Harrison from the USA. Cervellin is a native of the region making it a true home GP while Harrison has raced 3 prior GP’s in the MX2 category scoring 5th at the 2017 Monster Energy MXGP of the USA, 3rd at the 2016 Monster Energy MXGP of the USA, and 7th at the 2016 Monster Energy MXGP of the Americas.

2018 MXGP of Trentino top 3 (MX2):

  1. Jorge Prado
  2. Thomas Covington
  3. Henry Jacobi

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 136 points; 2. Henry Jacobi (GER, KAW), 113 p.; 3. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, HON), 107 p.; 4. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 100 p.; 5. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 95 p.; 6. Tom Vialle (FRA, KTM), 86 p.; 7. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 81 p.; 8. Davy Pootjes (NED, HUS), 65 p.; 9. Adam Sterry (GBR, KAW), 63 p.; 10. FOX Holeshot Films – MXGP of The Netherlands

MXGP is happy to keep running the FOX Holeshot competition trough the 19 rounds of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship season together with MXGP Partner FOX.

The way it works is that 1 point is awarded per MXGP or MX2 championship race. The first rider who cross the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner will be given a point. At the end of the season, the 2 riders – one per category - with the most FOX Holeshot points will win a mega prize.

At the MXGP of The Netherlands taking place on March the 31stin Valkenswaard Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado took both FOX Holeshot in Race 1 and Race 2 respectively.

Cairoli and Prado - No Worries

If Claudio De Carli was nervous a little over two weeks ago, as his two riders complained of feeling uncomfortable from slight injuries, that feeling of doubt was quickly squashed around the rough sand track of Valkenswaard last weekend.

Sure, Antonio Cairoli, the MXGP red-plate owner, had come back to win at the Grand Prix of Great Britain, so his place on the Dutch podium was pretty much assured, but Prado, who missed England because of a painful injury, was a question mark.

That doubt was gone after the Saturday qualification races, after both Cairoli and Prado won, and headed into Sunday with big smiles and pole positions.

“I have a couple of good tracks where I have good results in the past and Valkenswaard is one of them,” Cairoli said. “A very nice weekend. I didn’t really feel great all week. On hard-pack I was OK but this small shoulder problem in the sand made things difficult. Anyway, looking at the bigger picture we took two wins and you cannot get more than fifty point’s, so it was a great weekend. Also, no crashes, which was important on this track where we saw a lot of people going down. It will be a busy week now with my home GP, but I hope to see a lot of public at Arco and KTM again on top of the podium.”

As for Prado, the discomfort wasn’t enough to give his competition a sniff of victory as he went 1-1 and close up the points gap on Thomas Kjer Olsen after his British DNS.

“It was a great weekend,” Prado said. “Four days ago, I could not think about riding. I had too much pain and I didn’t really know how my body was reacting. I had to rest these weeks and take it easy. I wasn’t happy at all to miss Matterley Basin. I don’t think we really expected these results here this weekend: the goal had been just to ride and get some points! On Saturday I had some issues and didn’t feel comfortable but today I woke up and I felt better. So, to win both races was great and to get some points back. I took some painkillers today just to be safe but everything that we did for this weekend turned out well. It is a long championship and my rivals are riding well. We just need to keep going, keep focussed, limit the mistakes and keep trying to improve.”

Now onto Italy and something of a home GP for the De Carli Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team. Hard pack, and a massive crowd should help Cairoli through is current injury pains, and for Prado it is a chance to bring Olsen a little closer in the championship.

Jeffrey Herlings - The Comeback

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings made a welcomed return to the Grand Prix paddock last weekend at the Grand Prix of Netherlands, held at the Valkenswaard circuit. While he wasn’t racing, just to see the defending champion back was great for the fans.

Herlings, who injured his foot in a practice crash in Spain during the off-season is working hard to come back for the second Italian GP at Mantova. Something that would be rather amazing considering he won’t get back on the bike until the end of April, giving him just a couple of weeks to prepare.

“Obviously the longer I wait, the better the foot will be,” Herlings said. “KTM want me back as soon as possible, so when I have no pain, they want me to race. It isn’t good to line-up at Mantova and finished 15th, but when I am capable of riding, I will race as quickly as possible. It will be two or three months before I am back where I should be.”

What the Dutchman can’t work out is why it is him that seems to break so many bones. Despite a near perfect off-season just one accident and it was all over for defending his World MXGP championship.

“I never crash, but when I crash, I usually break a bone and when I crashed in Spain, I looked at it and thought it was broken. I didn’t crash once all winter and then one crash and I break my foot, I didn’t understand why this happened. I should be racing with the guys and winning on the weekend. I am not a healthy human being and I want to come back when I am fully healed. I prefer having it in the pre-season than while I am leading a championship.”

As for going for records, which is generally his goal, the idea of winning a GP is still in his mind and come the second part of the season, Herlings wants to be on top of the podium and drinking champagne. For the time being though his 84 GP wins will remain just that.

“Hard to say how many GP wins I can get. The second part of the season I want to be as good as I was last season. The last seven or eight races I want to be the Jeffrey Herlings I know. I will practice anyway, and KTM want me as good as possible, as long as I am there signing autographs and riding around. It isn’t realistic to see me at the front, but I will see it just as a practice.”

So now, just as we have done the last two months, we wait to see when the four-time World Motocross Champion returns and can claim his place on the start grid of the MXGP Championship. Obviously, a sand circuit like Mantova will be a good place to begin, but don’t expect fireworks as he slowly comes back from what has probably been the most difficult injury of his career.

VALKENSWAARD (the Netherlands) 31 March 2019 – In addition to the World Championship classes of MXGP, MX2, and WMX this weekend the 125cc two-stroke of EMX125 presented by FMF Racing ripped around the Dutch circuit of Valkenswaard. The fastest and most consistent of all proved to be Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini.

Spring weather combined with the ring and premix of two strokes invoked some of the most unique racing all weekend. The FIM Europe Championship is one of the most competitive and popular in the world hosting 100 entries through two days of racing.

With the entries capped at 100 even more attempted to take part but through two groups of timed qualifying sessions on Saturday the field was trimmed down to a 40-man gate stacked with competition.

The 125cc riders started their fight through the deep and challenging sand of Valkenswaard for the first race Saturday. Taking the lead from the first lap was Guadagnini while Team VRT’s Tom Guyon from France gave pursuit. The #912 of RFX KTM Racing’s Joel Rizzi ran 3rd, RFME MX Junior Team’s Orio Oliver was 4th, and A1M Husqvarna’s Jorgen Matthias Talviku held 5th.

As the racing reached it’s 6th lap Guyon fell out of 2nd and back to 7th which moved Rizzi into the runner up position. 4 laps later Oliver took 2nd from the German but then Rizzi fought back holding on for another 3 laps until Talviku made it past both.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf was battling for a top 5 throughout race 1 starting 6th then running in 4th before eventually finishing 5th. Guadagnini took the race win after leading every one of the 14 laps with Talviku finishing 2nd and Rizzi 3rd.

This morning Valkenswaard hosted Race 2 just prior to the first MX2 and MXGP Races where De Wolf kickstarted the action leading Rizzi, Talviku, Guyon, and Oliver. Race 1 winner Guadagnini was back outside of the top 5 as the second race started.

Guyon was the one making moves forward however and after starting in fourth his road to the lead was short yet challenging. The first 6 laps Guyon looked for a way past Talviku and both gained a spot when Rizzi dropped out of contention due to a mechanical issue.

When Guyon finally found a way past the process started all over again as the Frenchman spent another 6 laps searching for a move to get past De Wolf and into the lead. With only 2 laps remaining Guyon found the position he was looking for at the front of the pack which he held for the race win. De Wolf stayed second ahead of Talviku, Guadagnini, and Oliver.

In the overall classification it was Guadagnini’s 1-4 that earned the win while Talviku took 2nd and Guyon beat out De Wolf by only one point for the final podium spot! Guadagnini also takes the first EMX125 presented by FMF Racing red plate of 2019 as the championship will now head to his home round of Trentino, Italy next week.
