THE CHAMP STRIKES BACK AS LOTTE VAN DRUNEN GOES 1-1 IN SARDEGNA

RIOLA SARDO (Sardegna, Italy) 6 April 2025 – The 2025 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship roared to life in Sardegna with two gripping races at the iconic sandy circuit of Riola Sardo. A true test of physical and technical skill, the weekend delivered everything from dramatic crashes to stunning comebacks — and at the centre of it all was De Baets Yamaha MX-Team’s Lotte van Drunen.

Returning from an off-season injury, no pre-races and fighting illness just days before the race, the reigning World Champion showed exactly why she’s known as the Queen of Sand, sweeping both races with clinical composure and tremendous pace. With emotional highs, painful setbacks, and fierce battles from the likes of RFME Spain National Team’s Daniela Guillen, Van Venrooy KTM Racing’s Lynn, and Shana van der Vlist on Yamaha bike, round one laid down an early marker: this WMX season is going to be intense.

The Race 1 began with Shana van der Vlist grabbing the holeshot, while Van Drunen and Guillen slotted in closely behind, already showing strong pace through the opening lap. The deep sand of Riola Sardo — a favourite among winter training tracks for many WMX riders — proved to be the perfect stage for a high-speed showdown between the series’ top contenders.

As the front group of Van der Vlist, Van Drunen, Guillen, and Lynn Valk began to break away, Home hero MXFontaRacing’s Kiara Fontanesi also started making her presence known, working her way into the top five with a charge that saw her pass Amandine Verstappen.

By lap four, Guillen made an assertive move past Van Drunen to move into second, clearly signalling her intent to dominate the weekend. One lap later, she dived down the inside of Van der Vlist to snatch the lead and began building a gap, setting the fastest pace of the race and looking untouchable at the front.

Behind her, Van Drunen refused to give up. After reclaiming second on lap eight with a clean pass on Van der Vlist, the Dutch star set her sights on Guillen, whose lead hovered around 2.5 seconds. Meanwhile, Valk continued her strong ride, moving past Van der Vlist into third and applying pressure as the race entered its final stages.

But with just over a minute and two laps to go, disaster struck. Guillen, pushing hard, caught a rut before a jump and crashed that left her unable to restart the bike immediately. What had looked like a sure win suddenly turned into a costly error, as Van Drunen surged past into the lead.

Guillen eventually rejoined the race but dropped down to 10th but got disqualified for for accepting outside assistance which isa heartbreaking starting race for the Spanish star who had controlled much of the race and looked set to take a decisive win.

Out front, Van Drunen maintained her composure, holding off a late charge from Valk, who was just 2.5 seconds behind on the final lap. A backmarker ultimately blocked any chance of a last-second challenge, handing Van Drunen the win with a margin of 3.6 seconds at the line. Seeing the Defending World Champion very emotional to get the win after her injury at the end of last year.  Further back, SYE Racing Team 423’s Larissa Papenmeier who, incredibly is riding her 20th WMX season finished in the top 10 in 8th.

Race 2 bursts into life with a lightning start from Lynn Valk, who took the holeshot and looked poised to control the pack. Lotte Van Drunen tucked into second, but was quickly passed by Shana van der Vlist, who began to build early momentum. Meanwhile, Daniela Guillen, determined to rebound from her Race 1 heartbreak, made quick moves through the pack after an average start and was already into sixth on the opening lap.

Kiara Fontanesi also enjoyed a strong launch, riding inside the top five alongside Sara Andersen, who slotted into fourth. At the end of lap one, the running order was Valk, Van der Vlist, Van Drunen, Andersen, Fontanesi, and Guillen — a stacked front group full of the season’s favourites with everything to play for.

But the race turned on lap two. Valk crashed out of the lead, handing first position to Van der Vlist, while Guillen surged past Fontanesi making a superb pass around the outside of Fontanesi to take fourth, showing incredible traction and speed; and soon found herself pressuring Andersen for third.

By mid-race, Guillen had set her fastest lap and was under a second from Andersen, but a small mistake dropped her back to four seconds behind the Danish rider. Moments later, Valk — on a mission after her early fall — regrouped and stormed past Guillen on lap seven, reclaiming third in a brilliant display of resilience.

At the front, Van Drunen had been shadowing Van der Vlist lap after lap. With just under two minutes plus two laps to go, she launched a perfectly timed attack over the finish jump, taking the lead in style. Once in front, Van Drunen pulled clear instantly, showing once again why she holds the #1 plate.

With two laps to go, Valk repeated Van Drunen’s move — this time on Andersen — to grab third. Andersen, solid all race long, narrowly missed out on the podium, while Fontanesi’s hopes faded after a late crash.

Van Drunen claimed her second victory of the weekend to open the 2025 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship with a perfect score. The defending World Champion showed patience and precision for a well-earned first round after not being sure she could even line-up after being sick during the week. The Queen of Sand has started the season with a bang!

Lotte Van Drunen: “This was perfect for the Championship! It’s been a very tough winter I can tell you that and not just the last one but over the past 3 years too but to win again is unbelievable and I’m really looking forward to the next round. We’re gonna train on hard pack now because we haven’t done it in the winter. Thanks to everyone around me and on to the next one!”

RIOLA SARDO WELCOMES MXGP AND KICKS OFF THE MXGP OF SARDEGNA WITH THE OPENING PRESS CONFERENCE

RIOLA SARDO (Sardegna, Italy), 5 April 2025 – The Official Opening Press Conference of the MXGP of Sardegna took place today in the Media Centre at the iconic Crossodromo Le Dune in Riola Sardo, welcoming everyone to the fifth consecutive edition of the FIM Motocross World Championship held on this stunning Mediterranean island.

In attendance were Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela, Tourism Councillor’s Private Secretary Stefano Piano, Mayor of Riola Sardo Lorenzo Pinna, and President of Motoclub Le Dune Fulvio Maiorca — all of whom expressed pride in once again bringing world-class motocross to Sardegna. A special guest and home hero was welcome to the press conference, which is the 2023 MX2 World Champion, Andrea Adamo from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

This year’s event marks five straight seasons of hosting the MXGP in Riola Sardo, a venue that has become an early-season highlight thanks to its technical deep-sand layout and the warm welcome it offers to riders and teams. The Grand Prix is now not only a key sporting event but also part of a broader initiative by the region to promote Sardegna as a year-round sports tourism destination — the “Island of Sport.”

David Luongo"Returning to Sardegna for the fifth year in a row is a testament to the strength of this Grand Prix. Riola Sardo is now a reference point on the calendar — not only for the racing, but for its value to the teams, many of whom spend their winters here to train so pretty much everybody knows this circuit. It’s a track the riders know and respect, and the improvements in infrastructure and organization year after year show the passion of everyone involved. Sardegna is not just a race location; it’s a partner in our sport, and we're proud to continue this journey together. I want to thank all the people from the city, from the region, and from the island for all the support they give to the organizer, to this race. And we hope to continue to come here for many year."

Antonio Alia Portela"It’s always a pleasure to return to Sardegna. Every time we see this race on the calendar, there’s a sense of excitement. The island offers a special combination: a technical and demanding track, great weather, and local institutions that work with true professionalism and heart. Beyond the perfect setting, it’s the people behind the scenes who make everything run smoothly. And of course, the strong support from local institutions, the town hall, and regional authorities truly makes a difference. It’s clear to us that Riola Sardo is more than ready to host MXGP, and we look forward to seeing it grow even further in the years to come.

Andrea Adamo: "For me, Sardegna has always been a special place to train and race. In the winter, riders usually split between Spain and Sardegna — and I’ve always chosen Sardinia. It’s in Italy, which I love, and the conditions here are perfect: deep sand at Riola, plus a variety of other tracks nearby. This is the only real sand circuit we have in Italy, and it’s been on the calendar every year since 2021, which is great because it means we get another home GP. I also feel a personal connection, coming from Sicily — another island — so racing here means a lot to me. I saw firsthand how much work goes into preparing this Grand Prix, and I really want to congratulate the organizers. They’ve done an amazing job. As for the weekend, expectations are high — I’ll do my best to stay up front and keep improving."

Stefano Piano"The Grand Prix of Sardegna is a key opportunity for us to promote the island’s image worldwide. We’re proud to welcome thousands of fans, athletes, and teams outside of the traditional summer period, helping to extend the tourist season and boost the local economy. Events like this reflect our commitment to positioning Sardegna as a top destination not only for its natural beauty but also for international sporting events."

Lorenzo Pinna"This event fills us with pride. For Riola Sardo and the whole region, hosting MXGP represents a chance to grow, to showcase our identity, and to invest in the future. What once felt like a dream is now a reality, and we are committed to making it even stronger. The partnership between local institutions, Infront Moto Racing and the FIM is a winning formula that we want to continue developing."

Fulvio Maiorca"Five years ago, we welcomed MXGP here for the first time — and now, Riola Sardo has become one of the most respected sand circuits in the world. Beyond the race weekend, we’re proud that international teams choose this track for their winter training. Our goal has always been to raise the level of what we offer, and with the continued support of Infront, the FIM, and our region, we’ll keep growing. Sardegna is without a doubt the island of motocross."

THE ISLAND IN THE SUN SITS READY TO HOST THE MXGP OF SARDEGNA

RIOLA SARDO (Sardegna, Italy) 3 April 2025 – Round four of the FIM Motocross World Championships takes place this weekend in the deep sand of the Crossodromo Comunale “Le Dune” circuit at Riola Sardo, halfway down the west coast of Sardegna, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, just south of Corsica.

The first of two straight GPs on Italian territory, the MXGP of Sardegna is the fifth such event to visit the circuit, and the deep beach sand usually combines with the unseasonably warm weather to present a serious challenge to the world’s elite riders, many of whom use the facility for training and testing during the off-season.

The MXGP class in 2025 is being led by three former World Champions, although not one of them has enjoyed a winning feeling at Riola Sardo, merely a single taste of podium champagne each! Tim Gajser leads the series for Honda HRC, and his best result at the track came only last season, when he finished second overall behind Jorge Prado. Romain Febvre sits in second position for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, with his best result here coming in 2021 with a third overall. Fellow Frenchman Maxime Renaux finished second overall here in his 2021 MX2 Championship-winning season, but the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP man is looking for more as he recovers from a recent wrist injury.

The big news in MXGP is that Red Bull KTM Factory Racing megastar Jeffrey Herlings will line up for the first time in 2025, returning from an off-season knee injury which has taken longer to heal than expected.  He is the only rider to have won two MXGP events here overall, and even if he isn’t physically at 100% yet, he cannot be ruled out on his favourite type of terrain!

The MX2 class saw some incredible racing in France last time out, and it could be just as wide open in Sardegna, however for sure the reigning World Champion Kay de Wolf must be a favourite for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing after taking overall victory last year and second overall in 2023.  His teammate Liam Everts carries the red plate, however, and is no slouch in the soft stuff.  Just eleven points cover the top four in the Championship, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo Simon Laengenfelder and Andrea Adamo lying second and fourth, each behind one of the Husqvarna riders!

The Sardinian sands will host the opening round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship for 2025, and the “Queen of Sand”, reigning World Champion Lotte van Drunen, will be out to repeat her double win from last season for De Baets Yamaha MX-Team.  Strong challenges should come from Italian favourite Kiara Fontanesi on her FontaRacing GASGAS, as well as last year’s silver medallist and 2023 Sardegna winner, RFME Spain National Team rider Daniela Guillen!  Van Drunen’s Dutch compatriot Lynn Valk was on the podium last year and could well be a contender again, now on the Van Venrooy KTM Racing team.

The only Italian with a red plate in Sardegna will be Niccolò Mannini, as he holds an eleven-point lead for TM Moto CRD Motosport in the EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF series, through sheer consistency in what has been a hectic couple of rounds so far for the two-stroke flyers! Filippo Mantovani, Francesco Bellei, and Riccardo Pini are three more Italians hoping for success in the wide open EMX125cc pack!

The MXGP of Sardegna is difficult to predict in all classes and the challenging circuit will mean the races are never won until the chequered flag flies!

Five-time World Champion Tim Gajser has looked in total command of this year’s MXGP World Championship since the first European round at Còzar in Spain, having won all four GP races and one of the two Qualifying Races from rounds two and three. With Renaux struggling through a wrist injury after his win in Argentina, Febvre has taken up the running in second, with a 29-point gap to chase down on Gajser.

The only rider to finish ahead of Gajser since Argentina is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rookie Lucas Coenen, who won the Qualifying Race in France and took his first career MXGP podium on the Sunday.  His first MXGP event in deep sand ahead of him, the teenage Belgian could be a threat at the circuit where he was only beaten by De Wolf in MX2 last year, after winning race one.  Lying fourth in the Championship, he will be joined for the first time by another factory rider for an Austrian brand, as “The Bullet” fires into his first Grand Prix since winning the final race of the 2024 season in Còzar.

Herlings was looking menacing to Prado in last year’s second race in Sardegna, before a crash cost him the chance of a win, as well as second overall to Gajser.  Winner at Riola Sardo in 2021 & 2023, the latter victory was his 100th in Grand Prix racing, so he has great memories of this circuit to draw from, although in his first race back he will not start as favourite.

Another rider returning from injury will be Brent van Doninck, back in action for JM Racing Honda after suffering a pre-season injury, and the Belgian is also very much at home in the sand.  Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP flyers Calvin Vlaanderen and Jago Geerts have also tasted overall victory at Riola in the past, while Glenn Coldenhoff took a race win in 2023 and will look to continue his great start to the season as he lies in fifth, level on points with Coenen for Fantic Factory Racing.

Sadly, another rider who had started the season so well, Mattia Guadagnini, broke several ribs in a training crash for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team, and is likely to miss both Italian rounds while he recovers.  The leading Italian rider in the class will therefore be Andrea Bonacorsi, who has been training at the facility for Fantic Factory Racing and will be keen to repeat his podium result from the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha!

The snarling 450s are undoubtably the toughest machines to wrestle through the beach sand of Riola, so look for some thrilling action right to the end of this tough Grand Prix!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 167 Points; 2. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 138 Points; 3. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 121 Points; 4. Whatever glue they use for the Championship leader’s red plate has not been working in the MX2 World Championship, as it simply hasn’t stuck on any one bike for a significant length of time!

Adamo and his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Sacha Coenen have worn it after Qualifying Races, but first De Wolf and then Everts have taken it back for the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing squad, with Liam managing to retain it through the Sunday of the MXGP of Europe, ready for Sardegna.

Laengenfelder is just three points down in second place, and desperate to grab his first win for nearly 20 months. However, the German has yet to finish on the podium at Riola Sardo, whereas De Wolf, just two points behind in third, has yet to finish off of it! Third in 2021, he was absent injured in 2022, before taking second in 2023 and the overall win last season.  Everts’ best here was a fifth in 2024, just behind Laengenfelder, while Adamo has also never shone at this venue.  The 2023 Champ sits just six points behind De Wolf, eleven off the points lead.

Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Camden McLellan took a brilliant first career podium in RIola Sardo last year, and Thibault Benistant has twice been third overall here for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2.  The Frenchman is fifth in the points this season and on a high from a great MXGP of Europe on home soil. Can he be a surprise challenger in the deep sand this weekend?!

Sacha Coenen had a torrid weekend in France and will be looking for solid points to recover from sixth in the series. His starts mean he is always likely to be up there, but staying upright will be key to making a serious Championship run from here.  Dutch rookie Cas Valk enjoyed a dominant domestic Championship weekend for Van Venrooy KTM Racing, and is only ten points back of Coenen after finishing sixth overall in each of the first three rounds!

Behind Adamo, Honda HRC man Ferruccio Zanchi is the next best Italian in MX2, sitting in eighth ahead of McLellan and his rookie teammate Valerio Lata.  The boys in red will be up for a good performance to also build the crowd up for the Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino the following weekend!

The deep sand is sure to challenge the MX2 contenders throughout, and all of the classes should enjoy some amazing racing in Sardegna!  Not one to be missed!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Liam Everts (BEL, HUS), 135 Pts; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, KTM), 132 Points; 3. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 130 Points; 4.
