TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 2 June 2024 – The round four of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship in Teutschenthal saw some great action and an amazing scenario for the German fans who came in number despite changing and difficult weather conditions.

The round was won by one of their own in the person of Larissa Papenmeier from SYE Racing Team 423. The German won for the first time since 2021 and what a better way to do it than on home soil for the rider with the longest career in the championship.

In Race 1, it was the home star Larissa Papenmeier who swept across to take the Holeshot and the lead with it in front of RFME Spain National Team’s Daniela Guillen and Schmicker Racing’s Lynn Valk and MXFONTA RACING’s Kiara Fontanesi. The red plate De Baets Yamaha MX-Team’s Lotte Van Drunen had a bad start compared to her usual standards and passed the line of the opening lap in 6th position.

During the opening lap the German took the outside line in a corner while Guillen stormed on the inside to take the lead. Then a lap later it was Fontanesi, who maybe after seeing Guillen earlier, repeated the same move than the Spanish to take the 2nd place. 

Van Drunen managed to get herself quickly up to 5th on lap 2 and charged Valk to move up to 4th a couple of laps later. Things got tougher for Papenmeier with the Red Plate on her tail. Van Drunen attacking Papenmeier after fifteen minutes but the German repeatedly shut the door. German crowd making huge noise as Papenmeier held off the series leader.

However, Papenmeier put on a valiant effort but had bow on lap 10 of 12 when she struggled in some ruts before a jump as Van Drunen got the momentum to move up to 3rd.   

Meanwhile Guillen was comfortably at the top as he pulled away from Fontanesi. The Spanish rode superbly and controlled it from the front controlled the pace until the end to win the race. Fontanesi with her best race of the season at that time put a great option for the overall win. Van Drunen was way behind the top 2 and had to settle for 3rd in the end with Papenmeier behind in 4th. 

The front 5 riders with Valk in 5th did a good a job to get a chance to get on the podium.

With the rain falling in the morning, race 2 was bound to be an exciting one. It was Valk who took the best start in front of an excellent Papenmeier who seemed to get an extra push and help by her home fans who made themselves heard the whole weekend. Both riders swapped places a couple of time in the first corners but Valk took the advantage and the lead. 

Sara Andersen started very well in 3rd while Guillen saw herself in 5th but crashed in the opening lap and picked herself up in 12th with no front guard to work with.

Meanhwhile, Fontanesi quickly went up to 4th while Van Drunen with another bad start was up to 6th at the turn of the opening lap. However, Van Drunen started her comeback and passed April Franzoni on lap 2 for 5th. She then kept going and charging at the front. 

Andersen fell down the standing with Fontanesi and Van Drunen passing the Dane over the course of two laps. On lap 7 of 10, Fontanesi was virtually on the top step of the podium when she fell down and picked herself up in 7th and ending up in 8th.

Valk at the lead was racing for the top spot of the podium while Papenmeier eyed the 2nd place. Guillen charge up to 7th on lap 4 after her mistake in the opening lap and managed to get up to 4th in the end. 

With three laps to go, suddenly Van Drunen started to attack Papenmeier for second but the German stayed strong to keep the second spot and deny the young Dutch talisman.

In the end while Valk won the second race, she got a two-place penalty for not respecting a waved yellow flag during the race and lost two places, which demoted her from the podium for a 4th overall. That fact, consequentially gave the race win to home hero Papenmeier, and therefore winning the overall on home ground with a 4-1. It was her first win since 2021 which added to the emotion. 

Second on the podium was the Spaiard Guillen who fought back heroically after falling at the beginning of race 2 to finish 4th. Closing the podium was red plate Van Drunen, securing her lead in the championship with a solid weekend. 

Larissa Papenmeier: “It was really tough, especially on home soil. I hard the fans and I was super nervous as I heard them every lap. On Saturday was already goo for me and was satisfied with it. Today, with the tough conditions, ruts were deep and you had to stay focus and find your lines. I’m really speechless, I don’t know what to say! Fans were incredible and supported me so much. It’s a dream come true to win on home soil!”

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 31 May 2024 – After a weekend of rest – or national races for some – the MXGP World Championship resumes for the first of another run of three events in as many weekends, the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany!  This intense season of MXGP is sure to make for compelling viewing as we reach the eighth round of the series!

The historic Talkessel circuit at Teutschenthal in the Eastern end of Germany welcomes its 27th MXGP event in the middle of a titanic battle for the red plate in MXGP, as it bounces back to five-time Champion Tim Gajser, who only has a five-point lead over the reigning World Champion Jorge Prado!  Romain Febvre and Jeffrey Herlings are also in the hunt and both took the chequered flag first at some point over the Monster Energy MXGP of France weekend, so they will look to carry that momentum into this GP!  All four of them have tasted success here so the fight is most definitely on!

The MX2 class will give the local fans their biggest hope of domestic success, as Simon Laengenfelder lies second in the standings behind Kay de Wolf, and after race wins in Argentina and Trentino, he will enjoy massive support in a GP he missed last year! However, Lucas Coenen, third in points and on a two-GP winning streak, was only denied a win by a broken chain here last year, and will be out for redemption! The winner of last year’s GP, Liam Everts, lies fourth in the Championship ahead of his teammate and reigning Champion Andrea Adamo, with all five top men keen and able to make big points on German soil!

For Slovenian fans that are unable to make the journey to Eastern Germany, our good friends at SPORT TV Slovenia, who have been broadcasting MXGP since 2010 and have a current agreement through to 2028,  will be onsite to cover all four GP races LIVE on Sunday with full Slovenian commentary. The booth could get noisy if Gajser does well again!

As one of the leading ladies in the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship, Danish rider Sara Andersen has many special memories from the circuit for the next round of the Women’s Motocross World championship.

The very difficult Teutschenthal track is where Andersen made her Grand Prix debut, and it is also the closest Grand Prix to her home in Denmark. Adding to the love affair with Germany, her favourite rider when she was younger was one of the all-time great German champions, Ken Roczen, who is a former MX2 World champion and Monster Energy Motocross of Nations winner.

“I started riding World Championships when I was 15 years old and I have finished top five three times and I want to do better,” Andersen said. “So, I am not very satisfied. I mean, top five isn’t too bad. As a kid, I liked Ken Roczen, I never watched women races before I started racing in the women’s championship. Ken Roczen was my favourite rider since I was a little girl, so I usually watched the men racing. I went and watched the women racing in 2016, two days before my 15th birthday. It was in Valkenswaard, but my first race in the World Championships was the German Grand Prix at Teutschenthal.”

And while she didn’t find enjoyment at Teutschenthal straight away, the circuit grew on her, and better results came. She is excited to return this coming weekend as it means family and friends have the chance to attend the Grand Prix, as it is so close to home.

“I like that track. My first GP there, I was riding really good, but I crashed a lot, because I had never seen deep ruts like that before. I have been a couple of times after and last time was 2018 and it went really well, and I like hard pack and I like that track. I look forward to the next round and it is the closest Grand Prix to my home in Denmark.”

The grind of travelling and also finishing her studies is something that takes a lot of motivation, as anyone who travels a lot for their work knows, the weekends at the motocross are great fun, but getting there and back can at times be tiresome.

“Yes, the round in Spain we left on Monday, because I wanted to train on the way, and I drive to all the races. I came home on Tuesday, so more than a week on the road for one race. We trained at a track in France. Mum comes to all the race and my dad used to but hasn’t been coming the last few years. For the GPs I also have a mechanic goes with me, but then apart from that is it also some sponsors.”

Currently sixth in the World standings, Andersen is just a handful of points from third place and will no doubt be going to Germany to move into that top three in the World. So, if you attend this weekend’s Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, keep an eye out for this talented young lady, who is working hard to gain a top three in the World, or even a World Motocross Championship.

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 29 May 2024 – The 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship returns after a weekend off to launch into another three-week run of events, beginning this weekend with the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany at the legendary Talkessel circuit of Teutschenthal!

The compact German valley has hosted a massive 26 MXGP events in its history, with its first being in 1971.  The winner that day was Suzuki star Joel Robert, on his way to the fifth of his six career world titles.  We didn’t return to the Talkessel until 1993, when a rider named after the great Robert, Joel Smets, won the first of his 57 career Grands Prix on his thundering Husaberg.

The venue has been on the MXGP calendar every year since 1999, apart from 2013, when it hosted the Motocross of Nations instead, and the pandemic-affected season of 2020.  Antonio Cairoli holds the record for the most Grand Prix wins at the circuit with five, amassing the most individual race wins as well with nine.  All four of the leading MXGP contenders have seen success in Teutschenthal.  The MX2 class sees the home crowd’s biggest hope for a German winner, with Simon Laengenfelder currently sitting second in the points for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.  

Riders who lined up at the 2013 Motocross of Nations and will still race in 2024 include two of the Swiss team that day, Jeremy Seewer of the Kawasaki Racing Team, and Team Ship to Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR rider Valentin Guillod. Fantic Factory Racing stalwart Glenn Coldenhoff was also there that day, although from the three, only Guillod got into the top ten.

The EMX250 Championship will return for their fifth round, with Mathis Valin bolting the red plate onto his Bud Racing Kawasaki after his home GP, and he now leads from Cas Valk, who is 23 points behind for Gabriel SS24 KTM, with previous leader Valerio Lata dropping to third for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors after scoring only 8 points at St, Jean d’Angely.

Teutschenthal also welcomes the FIM Women’s World Motocross Championship, back for the first time since 2018, when Courtney Duncan took the victory! Home heroine Larissa Papenmeier has won there twice in the past, and she will lean on the local support to lift her from 7^th in the series.  Kiara Fontanesi, winner in 2015, is third in the points behind the flying teenage pair of Lotte van Drunen, who will carry the red plate for De Baets Yamaha, and RFME GASGAS Factory Juniors star Daniela Guillen, who is only nine points behind as they reach the halfway point of the series, this being round four of seven for WMX in 2024.

The 2024 MXGP title race is proving to be the absolute classic that the dazzling line-up promised at the start of the year. The previous two MXGP World Champions, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, are just five points apart at the top of the standings after the Slovenian won the Monster Energy MXGP of France, while Romain Febvre sits just 24 points further back for the Kawasaki Racing Team after bravely fighting through a thumb injury sustained in Free Practice. 

Jeffrey Herlings of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team is now fourth in the series and 61 points behind the leader, after winning race two at St Jean d’Angely. With the weather forecast showing more rain possible for the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, Herlings could be the man to beat at the German circuit.

Of the active MXGP field, Gajser has won the most at Teutschenthal, taking the MX2 trophy in his first title year of 2015, plus MXGP victories in 2019, ’21, and ’22.  Herlings and Prado have each won three at the Talkessel, with the current Champion taking the honours last season. Febvre has only one overall win there, taking the MXGP class in 2015.  His 2024 teammate Jeremy Seewer also won in MX2 back in 2017.

With a 43-rider entry list there should be a full gate in MXGP, with a large swell of local wildcards hoping to perform well in front of the usually large and raucous crowd! Tom Koch is the highest-placed German in the standings for the KTM Kosak Team, and the Schmicker Racing team will also be enjoying its home Grand Prix with its riders Corneliues Toendel and Adam Sterry.

The fight is well and truly still on in MXGP, both at the sharp end and throughout what is sure to be a crowded valley, both on and off the track!

The MX2 class has provided some wild racing in 2024, with the first six riders in the standings all taking a race win on either Saturday or Sunday, and so far the Grand Prix victories have gone in waves, with Kay de Wolf taking the first three for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Liam Everts the next two for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, then De Wolf’s teammate Lucas Coenen taking the most recent two rounds.  De Wolf’s consistency has seen him stretch out a 52-point lead in the Championship, and the big home favourite Simon Laengenfelder is the next rider along, scoring well in every race apart from the second one in Portugal, where he crashed and broke his collarbone.

Struggling on with plating over the injury for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, his speed has been climbing again, and he will be looking to make the most of the home support with the volume of the valley sure to rise with every move forward he makes! Lucas Coenen’s two wins have seen him rise back to third, just 7 points behind the German.

Everts and his teammate Andrea Adamo, the reigning Champion in the class, are fourth and fifth, with the other winner, Thibault Benistant of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, sadly likely to be out for Germany after hurting his back in a big crash in France.

Everts took the overall win at Teutschenthal last year, although he had a slight piece of fortune as Lucas Coenen suffered a broken chain whilst leading race two, after dominating the first. Both De Wolf and Laengenfelder suffered injuries before last year’s event, so with the top five all healthy, the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany could prove just as unpredictable as every other round this year!
