GARCIA PERFECT IN ALMONTE AS ERNECKER CLAIMS FIRST EMX125 WIN IN FIERY SEASON OPENER

ALMONTE (Andalucia, Spain) 22nd March 2026 – The 2026 FIM Europe EMX250 and EMX125 Championships burst into life for the first time of the season in the demanding sands of Almonte, delivering a spectacular opening round. Under the eyes of an electrified Andalucian crowd, two standout performances defined the weekend.

In EMX250, local hero Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Francesco Garcia was simply untouchable, securing a dominant 1-1 scorecard to claim a perfect overall victory on home soil. Meanwhile, in EMX125, Austria’s Moritz Ernecker from Norman KTM Factory Rookies emerged victorious after a hard-fought battle across both races, edging his rivals in one of the most unpredictable classes of the weekend.

With deep sand pushing riders to their limits and action unfolding in every lap, Almonte set the stage for what promises to be an exceptional season ahead.

The opening race of the EMX250 Championship exploded into life in Almonte, with aggressive racing from the very first corner.

Filippo Mantovani dived to the inside at the start, but it was Team VHR Racing Yamaha Official’s Mano Faure who emerged with the early advantage, leading the field out of Turn 2.   Garcia, however, quickly became the rider to watch. Starting just outside the top five, the Spaniard surged forward, passing Dirt Store Triumph Racing‘s Billy Askew on the opening lap before moving into second shortly after.

With the home crowd behind him, Garcia wasted no time attacking Faure. On lap two, he executed a decisive move around the outside to take the lead, one he would never relinquish.

Faure’s race then began to unravel. After losing the lead, he came under pressure and was passed by Askew before crashing heavily. Although he remounted, a second fall dropped him deep in the order, eventually recovering to ninth.

Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Jake Cannon steadily worked his way forward and made a late-race pass on Askew to move into second, securing a one-two finish for the Bud Racing Kawasaki squad.

Askew held on for third after running near the front throughout, while Cat Moto Bauerschmidt KTM’s Mads Fredsoe and JK Racing Yamaha’s Jekabs Kubulins completed the top five.

Out front, though, it was all about   Garcia. In dominant fashion, he controlled the race from lap two onwards, delivering a standout victory on home soil to open his 2026 campaign in perfect style.

Race 2 on Sunday kept the intensity and exciting racing going with warmer and drier conditions. Kubulins grabbed a superb start to lead the early laps, immediately putting himself in a strong position at the front. In the meantime, third in Race 1, Askew crashed in the early stage and unfortunately had to retire from the race after a great showing on Saturday.

Behind Kubulins, Race 1 winner  Garcia did not get the cleanest getaway, starting just inside the top ten. However, the Spaniard wasted no time responding, slicing through the field on the opening laps to move into the top five by lap two.

Garcia’s charge was relentless. Despite a big moment on the long straight where he nearly lost control, he maintained his momentum and continued to push forward, setting the fastest laps as he hunted down the leaders.

At the front, Kubulins initially controlled the race, but the intensity of the deep sand began to take its toll. As the race progressed, the gaps tightened, and the pressure from behind started to build.

Garcia made his move on lap six, passing Kubulins to move into second before setting his sights on Faure, who had inherited the lead. With the home crowd behind him, Garcia closed the gap steadily, riding on the limit as he chased down the Frenchman.

Behind them, the battle for the podium was just as fierce. Cannon fought his way through the pack after a mid-pack start, making crucial passes in the closing stages to move into the top five and keep himself in contention for the overall podium.

As the race entered its final minutes, the decisive moment arrived. Faure, under increasing pressure, made a mistake and lost crucial time, allowing Garcia to capitalise and take over the lead to the roar of the crowd.

From there, Garcia controlled the final laps to secure victory in Race 2, completing a perfect 1-1 scorecard. Faure regrouped to finish second, while Brazilian rider Bernardo Tiburcio delivered an impressive ride to claim third in the race.

Overall, Francisco Garcia was untouchable. With two commanding race wins, the Spaniard secured the overall victory with a maximum 50 points, delivering a dream performance on home soil and establishing himself as the early championship leader. His performance has definitely riled up the impressive Andalucian crowd coming to see him.

Jake Cannon’s consistency across both races earned him second overall, completing a strong weekend for the Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki team with a double podium result.

Mano Faure rebounded from a difficult Race 1 to take second in Race 2, securing third overall, while Jekabs Kubulins and Mads Fredsoe completed the top five after solid performances in the demanding conditions.

Francisco Garcia: It feels really good to have the red plate, especially here at home. I’m really happy with how I rode. Last year I was already fighting for the title, but I made some mistakes. This year I feel stronger and more consistent, and I know what I need to do. Riding in front of the home crowd was amazing. I tried not to focus too much on it during the race, but at the end I could really hear them, and that feeling was very special.

Moritz Ernecker

In 2026, the EMX125 European Championship presented by FMF Racing got underway with an explosive start. There were endos and cartwheels in the background as home rider Jorge Salvador took the early lead on the #385 machine.

But more drama followed just a couple of corners later, exiting Turn 3, where multiple riders went down in heavy piled up. Fantic Factory Racing EMX’s Gennaro Utech was one of those caught up, eventually being ejected over the bars and retiring from the race.

Salvador led the way briefly, pushing hard, while Riganti was running in third. Salvador began to slip back through the field, and CTM Motorhomes Priem MX’s Seth Priem also dropped from eighth to fourteenth by lap four, with the #32 eventually disappearing from the top twenty altogether.

Elsewhere, riders were charging through the pack after poor starts, with battles forming for the top positions. David Cracco from Dreams Racing was among those under pressure as riders fought their way forward. At the front, Moritz Ernecker took control and went on to claim his first race victory, ahead of the solid Frenchman Sleny Goyer form Yamaha Europe Monster Energy MJC  and Swiss Ryan Oppliger.

Race 2 delivered another intense racing as MCV Motorsport TM Moto’s Riccardo Pini launched out of the gate to grab the holeshot, with RFME Spain National Team’s Jordi Alba also starting strongly inside the top three. Just behind them, Race 1 winner Ernecker was immediately in contention, positioning himself perfectly to challenge from the opening lap.

Fantic Factory Racing EMX’s Bertram Thorius quickly emerged as the rider on the move. After breaking into the lead group, the Dane carried impressive momentum down the long straight on the opening lap to take control of the race. From there, he began to stretch a small advantage at the front, holding off pressure from behind.

Behind him, the battle for the overall win intensified. Ernecker remained firmly in the fight, while Goyer worked his way forward after a more difficult start, carving through the pack to rejoin the leaders mid-race.

Further back, Utech produced a standout recovery ride. After his crash in Race 1, the Italian charged back into the top five, showing strong pace and determination throughout the race.

As the race entered its final stages, the fight for victory came alive. Goyer closed in rapidly and made decisive moves and then capitalised on Ernecker’s crash after the Austrian banged bars with Thorius. Ernecker would then settled for third in race 2.

With just a few laps remaining, the Frenchman however pushed the race leader Thorius to the limit, as a race win would have given him the overall victory but the Dane showed great strength and refused to give in even if he stayed within striking distance and held firm under pressure to take the Race 2 victory.

Faure secured second while Ernecker completed the podium in third after setting some of the fastest laps of the race.

Moritz Ernecker’s victory in Race 1 combined with third place in Race 2 was enough to secure the overall win with 45 points, narrowly edging out Sleny Goyer, whose 2-2 results left him just one point behind.

In doing so, Ernecker became the first Austrian rider to win an EMX125 overall since Rene Hofer at Round 3 in Latvia back in 2018. His Race 1 victory also marked the first race win for an Austrian in the category since Hofer’s success in Germany earlier that same season.

Bertram Thorius’ impressive Race 2 performance, finishing second, earned him third overall and confirmed him as one of the standout performers of the weekend. Ryan Oppliger and David Cracco completed the top five overall after consistent performances across both races, while several riders endured mixed fortunes in the demanding conditions.

Moritz Ernecker "I am really happy to take the red plate. It was a mixed weekend, now, with the second race,  but I’m really happy about the overall win.”

WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE – THE FIM MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS TO EUROPE FOR THE MXGP OF ANDALUCIA!

ALMONTE (Andalucia, Spain) 19th March 2026 – The 2026 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship fires into its first European round this weekend, as the new Circuito di Motocross di Almonte venue holds the MXGP of Andalucia in the south-western corner of Spain, near the beautiful coast of the Gulf of Cádiz!

Five-time World Champion Jeffrey Herlings lines up with the red plate for the first time since October 2021 after a commanding victory for Honda HRC Petronas at the opening round in Argentina, but the Qualifying Race winner Tom Vialle sits equal on points with his teammate, and the pair of them are just three points ahead of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s defending World Champion Romain Febvre as we head to Almonte! The Frenchman won the last GP in Spain in 2025, but Herlings has won the most of any active rider in this country, with four GP wins to the Dutchman’s name under the Spanish sun!

Home hero Ruben Fernandez will be looking for success on his Honda HRC Petronas machine, in front of his passionate local fans.  Former MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf is also confirmed to be lining up for his first MXGP class event as he recovers from injury with Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.  The going looks to be soft, so maybe he has a chance for a shock result!

The MX2 World Championship is being led by World Champion Simon Längenfelder, keeping the #1 plate in red for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing after a perfect GP Sunday at Bariloche! Chasing the German in the series is the Triumph Racing Factory Team duo Guillem Farres and Camden McLellan, with the Spaniard eager for his first GP victory in front of his home fans in Almonte! The South African is also strong on soft terrain, so the circuit this weekend looks to be favourable for him as well, while Belgian stars Sacha Coenen and Liam Everts will look to catch up ground in the standings with their speed on this kind of surface!

TV COVERAGE ANDALUCIA

ALL BACK TO EUROPE FOR THE MXGP OF ANDALUCIA THIS WEEKEND!

ALMONTE (Andalucia, Spain)  18th March 2026 - After returning from the far-flung trip to South America, and possibly taking in some local races to keep up to speed, the MXGP World Championship Paddock prepares to race in Europe for the first time in 2026 as the MXGP of Andalucia takes place this weekend!

The brand new Circuito de Motocross de Almonte venue, which will be the 19th circuit to host GP Motocross in Spain, is located in the south-western corner of the country, just off the shores of the Gulf of Cadiz that leads to the Atlantic Ocean.  Only around 100km from the previous Motocross of Nations venue of Jerez de la Frontera, it should be one of the warmest areas of Europe at this time of year.

The two Championships are tightly poised as the red plate holders in both classes, Honda HRC Petronas new boy Jeffrey Herlings, and defending MX2 World Champion for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Simon Längenfelder, both took victory in Argentina after scoring zero points in the previous day’s Qualifying Races.

“The Bullet” sits level on points with his teammate Tom Vialle, and only two markers ahead of reigning Champ Romain Febvre, with the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP rider taking victory the last time the series visited Spain.

Längenfelder hold a three-point advantage over Triumph Factory Racing Team rider Guillem Farres, who will line up on home soil for the fifth time in his career with high hopes of delighting the local fans!

Almonte also sees the opening round of the EMX250 European Championship, with 50 riders looking to put themselves to the top in the absence of the top two from last year’s series.  The favourite, on home ground, is probably Francisco Garcia, after winning seven of the last ten races of 2025 for Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki. His teammate Jake Cannon, and fellow Australian Liam Owens for the Cat Moto Bauerschmidt KTM squad, are also amongst the leading contenders, as is Hungarian Áron Katona, moving up from EMX125 for Venrooy KTM Racing.  Adrien Petit won last year’s Spanish opener, so he could also be a threat on his Yamaha.  Last year’s EMX125 Champion Nicolò Alvisi will be another to look for, on debut for Maddii Racing Team Honda. Simone Mancini made his debut for Beddini Racing Ducati Corse in the MX2 class in Argentina, but returns to start his intended EMX250 title run for the new manufacturer in EMX250.

The EMX125 European Championship Presented by FMF series will also get underway in Andalucia, and as always this is a tough one to forecast at the start of the season with so many changes in teams and classes for the youngest regular racers in the MXGP Paddock!  58 riders are entered, and the top hopefuls include reigning 85cc Junior World Champion Rafael Mennillo from France on the 737 Performance KTM D’Stock 41 machine, with countryman Enzo Herzogenrath also likely to feature for TMX Competition KTM. Pau Caudet will have high hopes in his home country for the RFME Spain National Team, and British rider Drew Stock could be fast for JK Racing Yamaha after exceptional races in the bLU cRU Yamaha races last season, and a win in the British 125cc Championship last weekend.

The first World Championship action of the year in Europe has the makings of a fantastic weekend, with Spanish fans eager to see the riders in their new colours for round two of the ground-breaking 2026 season!

A new circuit always makes it tough to predict the top order in MXGP, as perennial contenders Febvre and new Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP signing Tim Gajser were the winners in the two Spanish rounds last season, albeit in deep mud at Cozar and the fine forest soil of Lugo.  The track at Almonte is likely to be a little more on the traditional hardpack Spanish soil, with the possibility of some interference from the weather!

Jeffrey Herlings has spent most of 2026 in Spain already, getting accustomed to his new Honda machinery, and is the most successful current MXGP rider in this country with two victories apiece in MXGP and MX2.  His earlier successes were at the Talavera de la Reina circuit, while two wins at intu-Xanadu Arroyomolinos included his record-breaking 102nd GP victory in 2023.

His Honda HRC Petronas teammate Vialle is one of five riders with two GP wins to his name in this country, with Tom winning back in 2020 and 2022.  Gajser won ten years ago at Talavera, and again in last year’s mudfest at Cozar.  The Slovenian is fifth in the 2026 series behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, who won two Spanish GPs in his 2024 MX2 campaign. Febvre’s win at Lugo last year was his first in Spain on his 12th attempt!

Maxime Renaux is sixth in the series for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, and he has also won twice on Spanish soil, including his first ever MXGP success in 2022.  The other rider with two GP wins here is Kay de Wolf, who is fighting to be fit in time to compete for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing after just missing out on the opening round in Argentina.

Behind the second Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot Andrea Adamo sits the rider that most of the crowd will be rooting for in MXGP, Ruben Fernandez! The Honda HRC Petronas pilot has two podium finishes on home ground to his name, including third in Lugo last year, and will be desperate to put it on the top step in front of his adoring public!

Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP rider Pauls Jonass also has past success in Spain, winning MX2 at Redsand in 2018, and he sits ninth in the Championship after Argentina, ahead of the leading Red Bull Ducati Factory MX Team pilot Calvin Vlaanderen.

Gabriel SS24 KTM rider Oriol Oliver will make his first European Appearance on home turf in the MXGP class after taking 15th overall in Argentina, but the big question marks are at the top of this stacked MXGP field.  Who will come out on top for the first 2026 GP in Europe? Tune in to find out!

2026 MX2 Start Bariloche

Despite a difficult start to his weekend at Bariloche, reigning MX2 World Champion Simon Längenfelder managed to reclaim the red plate on his Red Bull KTM for the MXGP of Andalucia, but he is being chased by the pack as the series hits Europe for the first time!

The German #1 plate holder comes to Spain for his sixth GP in the country, and has surprisingly not had a massive amount of success here, taking a solitary GP win with a 1-1 in 2023, but missing the podium in his last four attempts, including an equal-worst season result of 6th overall at Lugo last year.

Local fans will be urging Guillem Farres to push his Triumph to victory, but his best home GP result is only tenth overall from Cozar last season.  The Spaniard is just three points behind Längenfelder and it will raise the roof if he can get on top of the box for the first time! His Triumph Factory Racing teammate Camden McLellan is only four points further back, and will be looking for much more than his best Spanish result of seventh this weekend!

Liam Everts had issues with the local food in Argentina, but still sits fourth in the series for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, and for sure he will be a factor if the weather takes a turn, having dominated the GP at Cozar in the mud last year!

Mathis Valin holds fifth in the Championship for Kawasaki Racing Team MX2, as he heads to the country where he clinched his 2024 EMX250 Championship, while his successor in that series, Janis Reisulis, looks to build on his strong debut for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2.  He and his brother Karlis, also his teammate, took all three race holeshots in Argentina, and the blue team could be a stronger factor than expected in 2026.

Sacha Coenen sits between the two brothers in the standings, dropping to seventh with an unfortunate second race crash that was no fault of his own.  The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing flyer won the Qualifying Race last time out, and is likely to again be winding the throttle up to 11 as he tries to recover those lost points!

Cas Valk is ninth in the Championship as he campaigns the factory TM Moto CRD Motosport machine, with SB Racing KTM’s Jens Walvoort in tenth spot.  Honda HRC Petronas rider Valerio Lata was another rider tangled in that big Argentina incident, and will be after a strong showing on his favourite hardpack!

Besides Farres, there are a handful of Spanish wildcards, including the DB22 Triumph rider David Braceras, hoping for a better Sunday than his mechanical disaster in Argentina.  Beddini Racing Ducati Corse are also hoping to welcome back their new rider Ferruccio Zanchi to action in Spain after he missed the opening round.

The avid Spanish fans should have plenty to cheer about in Andalucia, and the Motocross world is eager to see the latest encounter in this enthralling World Championship as we start the first European leg of the tour!  Be sure not to miss a single wheel turn this weekend!
