Liam Everts victorious in Great Britain!

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 1 March 2020 – This weekend, KTM Liamski rider Liam Everts secured his first overall victory in the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing class, for round 1 held at Matterley Basin in Great Britain.

In the opening race on Saturday, Everts got off to a flying start, followed by Kjell Verbruggen and Maxime Grau. By lap two Verbruggen was in second, as Grau went missing, dropping down to 13th position.

By lap 4, Verbruggen was coming under fire from W-Z Racing rider Rasmus Pedersen and a crash saw the Dutch rider drop down to 35th. Pedersen then moved to third as Kevin Brumann of iXS MXGP Team passed for second place.

Finding good rhythm around the British circuit, Everts was able to pull away from Brumann, finishing the race with an impressive 24.122 second lead! Pedersen finished 3rd, while Cato Nickel and Meico Vettik placed 4th and 5th.

Local riders, Joel Rizzi of PAR Homes RFX Husqvarna and Eddie Jay Wade of Hitachi fuelled by Milwaukee made the Brits proud with a 9th and a 10th place finish.

In race two, it was Brumann who started in fashion and led the race for four laps, before Everts was able to chase him down. On lap 5 Everts took the lead from Brumann, pushing him to second position ahead of Florian Miot and Grau.

Just as Grau moved up to 3rd, less than a lap later Miot passed him back to secure 3rd placed in the race, as this was where he finished. While the top 3 stayed the same, we saw some action within the top 5, as Haakon Osterhagen found his way past Andrea Bonacorsi.

By that point the race was nearing the end, it was Liam Everts who took the race win, the overall victory and the red plate, going into round 2 as the championship leader.

Liam Everts: “I wasn’t expecting when I came here, second race was a bit tough for me but I had good starts during the weekend. I’m super happy to win here after my dad (Stefan Everts) did 14 years ago. This victory is for him.”

Herlings and Geerts win in Matterley Basin for the MXGP of Great Britain

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 1 March 2020 – The first round of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship season has concluded here at Matterley Basin. The MXGP of Great Britain saw plenty of action over the weekend, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 rider, Jago Geerts took the overall victories in MXGP and MX2.

The sunny weather on Sunday morning set the stage for a fantastic day, with the racing even more exciting than expected. This was a treat for the British fans, who got to witness the start of the brand-new MXGP season.

Going into the weekend, the overall winner for the MXGP class was hard to predict. With a full line-up of extremely strong riders, who have been training hard this winter, the list of favourites was never ending.

Following Saturday’s practice session, Team HRC rider, Tim Gajser, was among the top favourites as he clocked in the fastest lap-time during the session. Second was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis, followed by Red Bull KTM Factory pilot Antonio Cairoli.

In the opening race of the weekend, it was the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jeremy Seewer who claimed the first FOX Holeshot of the season, closely followed by Herlings and Gajser. Team HRC’s newest recruit and MXGP rookie, Mitch Evans, also got off to a flying start in fifth. But on the downhill corner after pitlane Gajser found himself in trouble as he banged bars with Honda SR Motoblouz’s Jeremy Van Horebeek, which left him having to fight back from 13th position.

On the opening lap, Evans was moving quick as he made a move on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jeremy Seewer. The 2013 MXGP of Great Britain winner, Clement Desalle of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team also got a good start in fourth, before getting cross-rutted in the second lap and falling down to 7th.

As Herlings continued his lead, Seewer found his way back past Evans, knocking the factory Honda rider down to P3. Meanwhile the battle for 4th, 5th and 6th was on between Cairoli, Desalle and the Standing Construct Gas Gas MXGP rider Glenn Coldenhoff. Desalle did muscle his way past the GasGas Factory rider, while Cairoli was able to maintain his 4th place position.

Towards the end of the race, Gajser found himself battling the 2019 MX2 World Champion, Jorge Prado of Red Bull KTM Factory, with the Honda rider able to pass the MXGP rookie. He then set his sights for higher positions, but a crash on the last corner before the Monster Energy finish line of the last lap left him having to settle for P8 in the race, allowing Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider, Gautier Paulin to move up a position to P7.

In the end it was Herlings who took the race win with a 0:11.879 second lead over Seewer in second. Having a fantastic ride and making an impressive debut to his MXGP rookie campaign was Mitch Evans who placed 3rd in the race.

In race two, it was the SM Action M.C Migliori – J1 Racing’s Henry Jacobi who took the FOX Holeshot, but Gajser moved swiftly into the lead, with Cairoli following him to also pass Jacobi. Meanwhile Herlings was behind in 4th and Paulin in 5th. Bad luck for Evans, who came around the first turn virtually last, leaving him with a lot of work to do in this second MXGP race.

By lap 4, Herlings was already charging, making a pass on Cairoli for 2nd position. Gautier Paulin was sitting in 3rd, where he remained throughout the race, also keeping Desalle at bay in 4th. From then onwards the top 5 remained the same until the race concluded, while the battles heated up behind.

Mitch Evans found himself moving quickly, and by lap 5 was already in 6th position as he passed both Seewer and Jacobi. Seewer then came under threat by the #259 of Coldenhoff, with the Dutch rider able to make the pass stick on lap 11.

With two laps to go, Desalle and Coldenhoff found themselves in an intense battle, with the two riders getting close to each other on several occasions, but the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider stayed strong to finish 5th. Desalle team-mate Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Romain Febvre did not line up at Sunday’s races as for an injury to his knee during the past week, he'll be back racing in Valkenswaard next week.

Gajser claimed the race win and with it a second overall, while Herlings made a strong come-back as the overall Grand Prix winner. Cairoli finished 3rd both in the race and the podium.

Jeffrey Herlings: “Definitely there is no better way to start the season than to start with a win. I said I did not need to win every GP this year but it was a good day. I made a 1-2, we have improved a lot also as a team as my bike is getting better and better. Thanks to Red Bull KTM racing Team for the great job they did. I’m really looking forward to Valkenswaard, I’m very excited to go to my home GP.”

Tim Gajser: “Overall I’m super happy to finish on the podium, I’m just disappointed for my first race as I crashed twice, but at the second race I had a good start from the beginning, I made a quite comfortable win and I can’t wait to see what happens next weekend”

Antonio Cairoli: “I’m very satisfied, my shoulder is getting better but unfortunately I twisted my knee in a training but I’m thankful I did not come out with a lot of pain today. The track was very challenging, especially during the second race. I wanted to go out this round taking easy and see what I could be capable of and eventually it was a good weekend and I’m happy to be on the podium”

While everyone expected the battles to be intense in the MXGP class, it was clear that the fans were pleasantly surprised as the MX2 riders delivered that and much more.

In the opening race, it was the Red Bull KTM Factory rider Tom Vialle starting the race with the FOX Holeshot. Straight away the young Frenchman pulled a gap on his competitors and rode comfortably in 1st for the majority of the race.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame also got off to a great start as he followed Vialle until lap 5, when Red Bull KTM Factory’s newest recruit Rene Hofer made a successful pass for second position. The Hitachi fuelled by Milwaukee rider Conrad Mewse also pushed for third.

The race action was impressive, as 3 riders battled for 2nd, with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory’s Jago Geerts moving up from 4th to 2nd on lap 6, when he passed Mewse and F&H Kawasaki Racing rider Mikkel Haarup.

That very same lap saw big changes to the top 5, with Boisrame fading allowing Geerts, Mewse, Haarup and Jed Beaton of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna to move up a position. In the next two laps, Beaton made some swift moves on Mewse and Haarup.

On lap 8 Vialle made a mistake and crashed out of the lead. This handed Geerts his first race win of the season, with Beaton finishing 2nd and Haarup making a fantastic debut to his MX2 season with a 3rd. In the end Vialle crossed the line in 6th position.

In race two, it was another FOX Holeshot from Red Bull KTM Factory but this time by Rene Hofer. Geerts was right there in P2 and Vialle in 4th place. SM Action M.C Migliori – J1 Racing’s Maxime Renaux also got off to a great start in 6th position, followed by Beaton and Boisrame.

The championship favourite, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Team got off to a much better start in the second race, as he crossed the line 5th on the opening lap.

By the second lap, Hofer continued to lead from his team-mate Vialle, while Olsen moved into 3rd followed by Renaux and Beaton. Meanwhile race 1 winner, Jago Geerts crashed out of 2nd and was back down in 8th place, putting his chances of an overall at risk.

The top 5 remained the same until lap 8 when Haarup, Geerts and Boisrame moved up to 4th, 5th and 6th.

Hofer led the majority of the second race, keeping his team-mate at bay, before Vialle was able to pass the young Austrian, with 3 laps to go. At the same time, Haarup made a move on fellow Dane, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory, for 3rd.

With 2 laps remaining, Geerts was also able to pass Olsen for fourth, which handed him the overall victory here at Matterley Basin, the first of his career.

Jago Geerts: “It’s really a good feeling to pick my first overall win here in Matterley Basin, At the first heat I had a small gift from Tom (Vialle). I’m really looking forward to Valkenswaard next weekend, it’s like my own GP. I had a really good start in second heat and I just battled for the lead, I had a crash and beat my shoulder a bit so I came back to fourth, but I’m super happy, I feel like my riding is really good now”

Tom Vialle: “I started the season really good, during the first race I felt really comfortable in first but then I made a mistake on a jump, while in the second race I was leading and I managed to win the race. I’m already looking forward to next GP”

Mikkel Haarup: I’m just happy. I did not come here to contend for the race but at the end I managed to finish with a third overall which is amazing. I had two decent races, good riding I wish to thank F&H Kawasaki and everybody who supports me.”

Gajser and Haarup took the pole in Matterley Basin

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 29 February 2020 – The 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship has seen its first lot of actions at the popular British circuit of Matterley Basin, as the MXGP and MX2 riders took to the track for their timed practice sessions.

Defending MXGP champion Team HRC rider, Tim Gajser, topped the charts in the MXGP timed practice, while F&H Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup made a successful start to his World Championship debut, setting the fastest lap-time in MX2.

Also joining the world championship riders were the supporting EMX125 presented by FMF Racing and Women’s World Championship classes. In the 125cc race, Liam Everts secured his first race of the season, following a good start that saw him lead the race from beginning to end. Meanwhile, Kevin Brumann and Rasmus Pedersen also had a strong ride as they finished second and third respectively. It was also good news for the Brits, as Joel Rizzi and Eddie Jay Wade both finished within the top 10, giving British fans something to cheer about.

In the opening Women’s race of the weekend, it was the defending world champion, DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan who got a good start, but her time in the lead was cut short as Ghidinelli Racing’s Nancy Van De Ven applied the pressure and jumped into the lead in the opening lap of the race. Meanwhile the returning Kiara Fontanesi was not far behind in third. In the later stages, Sara Andersen was chasing Duncan and Van De Ven before crashing on the finish jump and with 8 minutes to go, Van De Ven found herself in trouble which allowed Duncan to gain back the lead. The bad luck continued for the Dutch Van De Ven as a crash with two laps to go meant that she had to settle for 5th position. In the end it was Duncan with the first race win of the season, followed by the 6-time world champion, Fontanesi and Lynn Valk in third.

The MXGP time practice got underway with tricky weather conditions. This was the first opportunity for riders to compare themselves with their competitors, but with a field full of extremely fast riders, the result was tough to call.

As the session got underway, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis clocked in the fastest lap time, on the opening lap, which remained his fastest until the end of the session. He led the defending MXGP Champion, Tim Gajser and the 9-time World Champion, Antonio Cairoli, before Gajser set the fastest lap-time in lap three, crossing the line with a 2:41.612 lap-time and knocking the tall Lithuanian from the lead.

The top three didn’t change for the rest of the session with Gajser, Jasikonis and Cairoli finishing ahead of the Red Bull KTM Factory rider, Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory’s Pauls Jonass.

2013 MXGP of Great Britain overall winner, Clement Desalle of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team, set the 6th fastest lap-time, showing that he could be in with a chance of repeating his 2013 success at the British circuit.

Yamaha SM Action M.C Migliori – J1 Racing rider Henry Jacobi, Team HRC’s Mitch Evans and Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen also made a good start to their debut in the premier class, finishing 7th, 8th and 10th, with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider, Gautier Paulin separating Evans and Vlaanderen for 9th place.

British rider, SS24 KTM’s Shaun Simpson put on an impressive performance in front of his home crowd, setting the 11th fastest lap-time, giving him a strong gate pick for the races tomorrow.

Team HRC Tim Gajser: “I tried to do a quick lap as soon as possible because I knew the track was going to get more wet and it will be harder to make a fast lap, but it was ok because it’s the same for everyone. I really like the track, we will see what it will be like tomorrow; I definitely think the start is going to be key because when the track is wet it’s really important to be in front but anyway I will do my best and we will see”

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team, Clement Desalle: “Today was not so bad.  Hope to have a good start again as this will be very helpful for the race. Last year I had a bad crash, but we had good testing in the off-season and I’m here again, I feel good with the team and the bike, so I’m feeling positive”.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing, Pauls Jonass: “This off season we had no injuries and no major setbacks which is very important going into the new season, it’s always nice to start the season. Tomorrow will depend on the luck because in the muddy conditions anything can happen, but I like the track and we will see how it goes tomorrow but for sure I will do my best”.

MXGP - Time Practice - Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), 2:41.612; 2. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, Husqvarna), +0:00.334; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:00.708; 4. In MX2 the session was dominated by the F&H Kawasaki Racing riders, as Mikkel Haarup topped the charts in the MX2 time practice, going 0:00.595 faster than his team-mate Roan Van de Moosdijk. Overall it was a good start for the entire F&H Kawasaki squad, as Mathys Boisrame finished in 10th and with three riders in the top 10, F&H are looking strong for tomorrows races.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider, Jago Geerts had a good ride in third, with the Red Bull KTM Factory rider Tom Vialle behind in P4. Doing it for the Brits was Hitachi fuelled by Milwaukee pilot Conrad Mewse, who made the most of his home GP, setting the 5th fastest lap-time ahead of MX2 rookie and Red Bull KTM Factory’s newest recruit Rene Hofer.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna MX2 rider, Thomas Kjer Olsen, who is considered the favourite going into round 1 of the championship had an unlucky crash and was unable to better his lap-time from lap 4, finishing 7th ahead of his team-mate Jed Beaton.

Meanwhile, GasGas factory supported Jeremy Sydow of the GasGas Factory Juniors squad had an impressive ride to place in 10th, putting the brand-new world championship manufacturer among the top teams in the championship.

F&H Kawasaki Racing, Mikkel Haarup: “It was unexpected to be honest; I just came here to ride good and of course we knew we were quick but the main goal was not to be the quickest. I was just doing all I could even of the track was tough. I just managed to do a few quick laps and yeah I’m happy with the qualifying”.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, Ben Watson: “It’s strange to be the first race of the season as its normally later on and because the season has started but it’s nice to be back here in Matterley Basin. I had a good off-season but I crashed and popped my hand again which meant I had 4 weeks off the bike and rode just two times this week. I finished 4th in 2018 season and last year I had bigger expectations, I wanted to keep making steps each year and the last season was a difficult one for me. We go again this year and we are only at round one, so I also need to be smart for the duration of the season”.

MX2 - Time Practice - Classification: 1. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, Kawasaki), 2:38.419; 2. Roan Van De Moosdijk (NED, Kawasaki), +0:00.595; 3. Jago Geerts (BEL, Yamaha), +0:00.626; 4. MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain) 28 February 2020 – The 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship season has been officially declared open in Matterley Basin, with the opening press conference. While the racing begins tomorrow, teams and riders gathered at the circuit to get prepared for the weekend ahead.

The afternoon of events started at the MXGP of Great Britain media centre, where the official 2020 season preview video was shown, as well as a special presentation featuring some highlights of 2019.

To officially open the first press conference of the year, Infront Moto Racing CEO Mr. David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Mr. Antonio Alia Portela and MXGP of Great Britain organiser, Mr. Steve Dixon began by saying a few words to officially welcome everybody to Matterley Basin.

Infront Moto Racing CEO, Mr. David Luongo: “It’s a big pleasure to be here again to officially open the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship Season, as we always say in February the winter break is too long for us who are passionate about motocross. Here we are in Great Britain for the opening round of the 2020 MXGP season. A big announcement has been made during this week, as we are now called as Infront Moto Racing, it’s a change, but with continuity because you will see the same faces, the same people and we are managing the motocross world championship exactly the same as before, but it will give us a bigger chance to touch some more prospects in the sports business”.

He also added: “I want to really focus on the fact that the MXGP World Championship will face one of the most unpredictable seasons ever, we have a huge talented line-up, with many riders who are really going fast so it will be very exciting for all of us. And I want to also highlight a newcomer brand to the championship, which is GasGas manufacturer joining the series, this is also a fantastic news for the championship. And evwntually I would like to thank Steve (Dixon), we are finally back in the UK for the opening round. Matterley Basin is one of the most beautiful tracks in the championship, one of the favourites among the MXGP Paddock and fans alike”.

FIM/CMS Director Mr. Antonio Alia Portela: "On behalf of the FIM I would like to welcome all of you to the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship. This season will see a new bunch of riders fighting for both titles and thanks to Infront Moto Racing, we will go to well-known venues and some new ones always with higher level, it’s probably going to be a very challenging year for everybody and it is thanks to the promoter and all efforts that they have done that we will have a pretty steady calendar. Finally, I would like to wish you all the best for this year”.

MXGP of Great Britain organiser, Mr. Steve Dixon: “That’s hard to believe that this is the 10th GP here, we started in 2006 up here in Matterley Basin and it’s been fantastic. Of course, it’s been challenging with the typical English weather, but the motocross fans are tough and will come either rain or shine. Thanks to Infront Moto Racing and the FIM for allowing us to bring the Grand Prix to Great Britain as first stop of the season and we hope to continue with more races here in this beloved track”

Following words from the officials, Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo then unveiled the special MXGP Championship trophy, newly introduced for the 2020 season. The MXGP Trophy designed by the Spanish Gracia Rojals Studio will signify a new tradition in the World Championship, paying homage to all the past, present and future world champions of the premiere MXGP class.

The official press conference was then concluded with a family photo including some of the top MXGP and MX2 riders. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, along with Red Bull KTM Factory’s Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings spoke about the season ahead and their hopes for the World Championship title. Also making an unexpected return was the 2019 MX2 World Champion Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, who spoke about his hopes for the season of running with the top riders in the field.
