Monster Energy MXGP of Lombardia Set for Racing Return

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 9 May 2019 - The 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship is back to racing this weekend as MXGP heads to the circuit of Mantova, Italy. Over a month since the last round took to Trentino in dramatic fashion the Monster Energy MXGP of Lombardia this weekend will be the second Italian round of the season. Last visiting the sandy Mantova circuit during the 2016 season Italian fans and the world’s best motocross riders will bring the venue back to life this weekend.

As the championship fights start to heat up in both the MXGP and MX2 categories the round of Lombardia will also host the two stoke FIM Europe Championships of EMX125 and EMX2T presented by FMF Racing. In EMX2T presented by FMF Racing Verde Substance KTM’s Brad Anderson will see if he can replicate his 1-1 result during the season opener in Great Britain while Team Ecomaxx Fuels’ Mike Kras will try and avenge his DNF during Race 2 at Matterley Basin. EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing will see its third round this weekend as Italian Mattia Guadagnini from Maddi Racing Husqvarna leads the Championship standings by 10 point over Team VR’s Tom Guyon.

The MXGP title chase heated up at the previous round in Trentino where Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser went all out in a battle for the win. High speeds, endurance, and tight but clean racing made for an epic prelude to the break prior to this weekend. With the return of racing this week and again in Italy on a circuit the pair battled on in 2016 expectations are deservedly high for what lies ahead.

As Cairoli looks to maintain his points advantage Gajser will be striving to maintain the momentum at a venue he took 1-1 finishes for the MXGP overall in 2016. The pair of title contenders will have to do with the improving speed of Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin and others however.

Paulin finished 2ndoverall in Mantova in 2016 and seemed to have found a way to separate himself from the rest of the field in Trentino but will now need to bridge the gap to Cairoli and Gajser.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis could be a potential podium this weekend after showing impressive speed and consistency throughout the year thus far. The lengthy Lithuanian is no stranger to sand and currently holds down 4thin the championship standings.

Honda SR Motoblouzrider Jeremy Van Horebeek also has strong results from past editions of MXGP in Mantova scoring 5thin 2016 and 2ndin 2015. It is safe to say that the Belgian is feeling as good if not better than ever currently making him a threat to the podium.

Van Horebeek’s fellow countryman Clement Desalle from Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing is expected to return this weekend after Kawasaki announced the 6thplace rider in the championship standings had a knee operation following Trentino.

While many were waiting to see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings return to racing this week it looks as if they may have to wait a little longer as KTM has given no indication of his return yet.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 191 points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 175 p.; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 142 p.; 4. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, HUS), 120 p.; 5. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, HON), 113 p.; 6. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 112 p.; 7. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 98 p.; 8. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), 88 p.; 9. Julien Lieber (BEL, KAW), 79 p.; 10. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, YAM), 71 p.

The MX2 class meanwhile has all eyes focused on the defending champion from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Jorge Prado. It is Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen that leads the championship standings however.

The reason behind Prado’s popularity is clear though seeing that the young Spaniard has dominated each of the 3 rounds he’s entered, the problem being 4 rounds are in the books. Success for Prado should not be a forgone conclusion though as its not just Olsen looking to top the podium several others such as FH Racing Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi, Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha’s Ben Watson and Jago Geerts, or even Prado’s rookie Red Bull KTM Teammate Tom Vialle.

Jacobi has been perhaps the most interesting rider to watch lately as his flamboyant and at times all out riding style appears to push the boundaries of control. Jacobi has already had a better season four rounds in than any year prior and what started as a goal of being in the top is no longer sufficient for the German.

The Kemea Yamaha’s of Watson and Geerts have surprised many as Geerts has surpassed expectations with brilliant riding and last-minute passes to hold fifth in the championship standings. Points wise Watson leads Geerts but while he has shown speed his inconsistent performances have yet to earn the Brit a podium this season.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate of Prado, Tom Vialle, has been the most impressive rookie yet aided by impeccable starts allowing him to run at the front from the beginning.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen has scored 4thplace overall in the first 3 rounds of 2019 before fracturing his fibula in Trentino just over a month ago. While we may not see Vlaanderen at full speed the Dutchman has been confirmed for racing this weekend by Honda.

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 170 points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 150 p.; 3. Henry Jacobi (GER, KAW), 147 p.; 4. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 129 p.; 5. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 125 p.; 6. Tom Vialle (FRA, KTM), 121 p.; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, HON), 107 p.; 8. Mitchell Evans (AUS, HON), 89 p.; 9. Adam Sterry (GBR, KAW), 89 p.; 10. Davy Pootjes (NED, HUS), 76 p.

The Italians – Heading to Mantova

With three Grand Prix’s held in Italy in 2019, there is little doubt that each and every one will be jam packed with spectators, as motocross in Italy at the moment is hot.

The Trentino circuit held round four of the FIM Motocross World Championship, and this weekend we will see four five played out in the village of Mantova, while the 15th round will be held at Imola.

Of course, with nine-time World motocross champion Antonio Cairoli leading the MXGP championship points, you know the Italian people will support their legend.

So as Cairoli heads to the Citta’ Di Mantova circuit for the Monster Energy Grand Prix of Lombardia we wanted to highlight the other Italian racers riding in Italy this coming weekend.

In MXGP the Italian attendance is good and as we saw in last months Grand Prix in Trentino, the success rate might also be up there. In Trentino, Cairoli finished second, Ivo Monticelli finished fifth, and Alessandro Lupino finished in seventh place. Of course, while Cairoli will be looking for victory in Mantova, Monticelli and Lupino would probably be happy with top ten again on home soil.

“I was pretty happy with Trentino, even though I know my riding could be even better,” Lupino said after Trentino. “I scored good points, my best GP so far, and this seventh position is good for everyone in the team. We had five weeks before Mantova to be even stronger. I know that I can be in the top ten regularly, and that is what we will work for.”

As tough as the MXGP class is, Monticelli is holding down 12th place in the series points and Lupino is 14th. Now for somebody like Cairoli, that isn’t a great position, but for the other Italian riders, both racing for privateer teams, these results are brilliant.

The fourth Italian in MXGP, Samuele Bernardini the fight for points has been much tougher. Recently out of the MX2 class, Bernardini has scored just three points and sits in 28th place in the World. Still, a fighter, don’t be surprised to see this Italian lion fight hard in Mantova.

Now while Italy has a strong group of riders in MXGP, the MX2 class is a little thin. In fact, just two riders sit in the top 20 and those are Michele Cervellin, and Alberto Forato, holding down 11th and 20th places respectively.

Cervellin, who has long been the stand-out Italian in MX2 has scored 73 points and is good in the sand, so Mantova might help him move into the top ten in the series points.

Had it not been for a seventh place overall in Valkenswaard, Forato wouldn’t have a single point to his name, but that 23-point haul moved him into the top 20 in the MX2 class.

All eyes will be on these riders as they continue to hold the Italian flag high in MXGP and MX2.

Olsen – Still Holding Red

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna factory rider Thomas Kjer Olsen might be the red plate owner in the MX2 Championship, but he seems to be a little forgotten in all the talk of defending champion Jorge Prado, who has won three of the first four GPs and is a heavy favorite to win the 2019 MX2 Championship.

The last round of the MX2 Championship was held at the Italian circuit of Trentino and for Olsen it wasn’t a good one as he finished with a consistent 5-4 results, but well down from his usual strong performances.

“It’s not been the perfect weekend here,” Olsen said. “I’m still leading the MX2 Championship and I think I showed some good speed. Everyone knows this track is really difficult to pass on and I experienced that in the first race. The second race was better, but after running third for so many laps it’s tough not getting a top three result. But finishing 5-4 gives me good championship points. I’ll keep working hard during the weeks off to be 100% ready for the next GP.”

In the sand of the euro circuit in Valkenswaard Olsen finished with 2-3 scores for second overall to Prado, who had gone 1-1, but it was a solid rider and kept his points leads in the standings.

“We picked up some good points in The Netherlands. That’s what matters the most for me. Knowing the track would be rough, my goal coming into the weekend was to remain safe and do my best to maintain the lead in the championship. In the first race I had a decent pace and crossed the line in second. Then in the final race I got passed by Geerts while running second again, just before the chequered flag, so I ended up third for second overall. This season will be very long, and my goal is to remain consistent until the end of it.”

Matterley Basin was the stand out for Olsen as he made the most of Prado not racing and scored 1-1 results, his best GP performance in his career and the first time he owned the red plate.

“It’s just awesome to go 1-1 in the UK. My weekend was really good – I won the qualifying race and then went on the claim the overall in MX2 with two more wins. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. It’s been a long time since I got the overall win and I was happy to do it at this cool track. Matterley Basin has always been a track that I enjoy riding and this weekend I did my best to collect as many points as possible for the championship. I felt comfortable all weekend and my best race was the last one, where the track was at its roughest. I have so much confidence in my bike, and so much trust in all the members of my team. It was good to pay them back with this win. I also secured the red plate for the first time. Now the goal is to hold onto it and push hard during the upcoming races.”

The opening round in Argentina was a brilliant start to the season also as he scored 2-2 results and headed back to Europe with a lot of confidence.

“I’m quite happy to start this season with a second-place overall result here in Argentina. As a racer I’m always looking for race wins, but it is really good to start the season on the podium. In the first race I spun out of the gate and gave myself some work to do. I managed to get up to second on lap 10, so I was pleased with that. The second moto went well. I moved from third to second and spent the whole race there. It’s going to be a long year with plenty of racing to be done.”

Now Olsen will head to Mantova in less than a weeks’ time. His red plate still intact, and the knowledge that anything can happen in the following rounds of the MX2 Championship.

MXGP's Younger Brother

There is no doubt, the MX2 class at the moment is very much a young version of the MXGP class. While Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Jorge Prado seems to be the fastest, he isn’t leading the championship points due to missing a round after picking up an injury.

Prado will need to stay consistent to catch red plate owner Thomas Olsen of the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory team, but both will need to remain calm under huge pressure from names like Henry Jacobi, Jago Geerts, Ben Watson and Tom Vialle who are also showing amazing speed.

Dirk Gruebel of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team has been able to sit back and watch his young gun Vialle surprise many people. Like many inside the GP paddock, Gruebel is loving everything about the MX2 class and these young rookies.

“It is fantastic,” Gruebel said. “I would never have imagined how much talent and how strong Tom is riding. I mean our job was the bring him on, help him get to the top ten and take it from there. Since the pre-season races, he surprised us, and he did well in the pre-season race in Mantova, then Hawkstone it was less, but Lacapelle was good, and since Argentina, he takes the good starts and he is living from that a bit, just as Jorge did two years ago. Still, he isn’t fading away and it is great to see. In Arco, he has never been there before, and he is keeping guys like Olsen behind him, and they are pushing hard. The last 10 minutes is still crucial for him, because he doesn’t have the strength yet, but it will come. It is just fantastic, the podium in MX2 is really young now.”

Former GP winner Marc De Reuver also has one eye on the MX2 championship as his riders fight for podiums finishes. At present Henry Jacobi is proving many people wrong with his consistent and strong showings and isn’t far off the pace of Prado and Olsen.

“Yes”, De Reuver said, “MX2 is super, and I didn’t expect it to be like this. It is really nice to watch, they all want to win, or go for the podium. Yes, Prado is too good, but that is okay, you also see he can make mistakes and you never know in this championship and I am not saying Henry will be World champion, but Prado is better at the moment but behind him, they are all equal. Watson, Olsen, they are all together and its good. We are not on Prado level yet, and if you want to go to Prado level, you need to continue. It isn’t like after one podium the season is over.”

And now, in two weeks’ time, the MX2 class will arrive at the Mantova circuit in the north of Italy, and once again, the pack will be hunting down red plate owner Thomas Olsen and defending champion Jorge Prado. With names like Ben Watson, Tom Vialle, Jago Geerts, Henry Jacobi and so many others all looking for a way to unsettle the championship picture.
