Gajser and Prado Perfect in Portugal

AGUEDA (Portugal) 19 May 2019 – As the Sun start to set on the Portuguese circuit of Agueda the buzz from the excitement of today’s epic racing continues. The 2019 MXGP of Portugal provided another round of stunning MXGP and MX2 racing with Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado finishing atop the standings.

Agueda’s clay soil is rich with color but today’s racing was even more vibrant as thousands of fans filled the trackside hills to take in the action. Graced with blue skies and sunshine the track was prepped to perfection overnight but the riders of MXGP and MX2 still had their hands full as it developed into a challenging circuit as the day progressed.

MXGP Racing started with a Fox Holeshot from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, his 8ththis season. Cairoli’s main competitor so far this year, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, was in second through the first corner and immediately gave chase to the Sicilian.

The front runners were first followed by Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer, and the other Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha of Gautier Paulin.

Paulin however fell out of the top 5 on the opening lap which left him to resume the race nearly dead last. His teammate Tonus went from 4thto 3rdwith a pass on fellow countryman Jeremy Seewer. The two Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team riders Clement Desalle and Julien Lieber held down 5thand 6thfrom the start with Lieber taking the lead role.

About three quarters of the way through the race Gajser’s continual pressure paid off when Cairoli stalled the engine out of corner and although he was able to get back going it was all the #243 needed to take over the lead. Cairoli latched right onto the Slovenian and during the final two laps made a push to pass but the sprinting speed of Gajser got the better of the Italian.

Behind Gajser and Cairoli at the finish was Tonus, Seewer, Lieber, Desalle, and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass. Paulin rode at an incredible pace through the field moving in and out of the race line to come from last to 15th.

Race 2 started with a Fox Holeshot from Tonus for his first time this year but Desalle took the lead and Cairoli slid into 2nd position by the first downhill. Gajser was in 5th behind Seewer but made it into 4th by the end of the first lap. Paulin was off to a much better start in 6thwith Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre adding to the YZ frenzy in 7th.

As Desalle led Cairoli it was Gajser making passes first on Tonus for third and then both Cairoli and Gajser got by Desalle in the same section. Cairoli was into the lead but within one lap a mistake saw him fall and drop to 5th. With Gajser in the lead Cairoli immediately retook 4th position then after 4 laps both Tonus and the #222 passed Desalle.

With 4 laps to go Cairoli passed Tonus to get into second but Gajser was already long gone taking an emphatic overall victory via double race wins for the second time this season. Cairoli took 2-2 for 2nd overall while Tonus reached the podium in his stunning ride and hard fought 3-3 finishes.

Tim Gajser, “Last weekend was tough, so I tried to forget it and just focus on this weekend. I was feeling good yesterday and also today, the riding was good, and I had two good starts. It was great racing and I am really happy to win both races, hopefully we can carry that moment to the next round.”

Antonio Cairoli, “On one side I’m happy because this is the goal to be on the podium and always consistent but on the other side I’m disappointed of course. I am happy like I said but focused on the next one where I will try to be consistent and not make these mistakes.”

Arnaud Tonus, ”It feels amazing, it is hard to find the right words at the moment, I have been through a lot so it is good to be up here. I really had to fight today, in the first race I was battling with Jeremy (Seewer) and he passed me in the beginning of the race so I had to come pass him back, it feels even better knowing that I fought to make it happen. I am super happy and I hope that I can keep it going.”

MX2 racing was also full of action starting with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado taking again scoring the Fox Holeshot while behind him a second turn pile up held back several riders.

Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin was in second on the opening lap, but F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi surged past along with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen a short time later.

The race then ended abruptly for Cervellin when he crashed in spectacular fashion during lap 7. Honda 114 Motorsport’s Mitch Evans took over the 4th position Cervellin crashed out of with the Honda Redmoto Assomotor machine of Mathys Boisrame getting into the top 5 as well. Evans then lost 4th to both Boisrame and Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts. Boisrame was shifted back 7 laps later when Geerts and Evans took 4th then 5th away.

Back at the front Olsen made a pass on Jacobi with 2 laps to go and as Jacobi pushed to reclaim the spot he instead fell and lost 4 positions on the last lap. Prado took the race win with Olsen 2nd ahead of Geerts, Evans, and Boisrame.

MX2 Race 2’s Fox Holeshot was taken by the wildcard EMX250 entry of Roan Van de Moosdijk from F&H Racing Kawasaki. Prado got the better of Van de Moosdijk into the second corner and took the lead. Van de Moosdijk dropped back to 4thwhile his teammate Jacobi moved to third.

Prado lost his lead to the Australian Mitch Evans before the end of the first official lap and held it for another 4 while Prado looked for an opportunity to pass. Cervellin returned to race after his crash earlier in the day and though banged up was in the top 5 as the race progressed.

Olsen made a mistake and had a back of the pack start but surprisingly didn’t crash after clipping another rider. By the 6th lap Olsen had worked up to 5th from 10th passing Cervellin and a handful of others in the process. With 5 laps remaining Jacobi made a pass on Evans to take over second and a lap later Olsen made one more pass to get into 4th past Van de Moosdijk.

All the while Prado continued to lead before taking the checkered flag for his 5th 1-1 result of 2019. Olsen finished 2nd overall but it was a bitter sweet moment as he also lost the championship lead to Prado. For the second time in his rookie MX2 season Evans reached the podium in 3rd position.

Jorge Prado, “This is the closest race to a home GP for me, we are very close to Spain and there are so many fans that came out and many were cheering for me, I really enjoy it. When I went onto the podium they went crazy so it is great to have a race like this and it was a great weekend. For me it was important to get the red plate because I feel more comfortable with it but it is tough to keep so I try to not make any mistake but in motocross you never know.”

Thomas Kjer Olsen, “I felt like my riding all weekend was really good so that was a huge positive. I felt pretty calm all weekend and I had a lot of confidence in my riding along with my technique on the bike. I am kind of bummed out about the mistake I made on the start of race 2 but it could have been much worse and I got up to 4thwhich was pretty good. I am just going keep working and focus on myself to be the best that I can, not worrying about much else.”

Mitch Evans, “It feels great to be back on the podium, we had a few tough weekends with some little injuries and my fitness dropped off because of it. We are finally back to the normal program and I am feeling a lot better which also gives a lot confidence coming into the weekend.”

Cairoli and Olsen Pass their way to Pole Position in Portugal

AGUEDA (Portugal) 18 May 2019 – Qualifying day is complete at the Portuguese stop of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship. The MXGP of Portugal has already provided amazing action on track with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen pass their way into the lead and taking the respective MXGP and MX2 pole positions.

With an amazing circuit and good weather Portuguese fans lined the venue for today’s action starting off with the EMX2t presented by FMF Racing category. Serving as the first race of the weekend Team Ecomaxx Fuel’s Mike Kras took the early lead and ran away with the win while Verde Substance KTM’s Brad Anderson fell during the opening lap before making it back up to eight.

Following the European Championship’s Two Strokes was the women of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship. The first race of their second round this year was dominated by BIKE IT DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan with Larissa Papenmeier riding to a strong second place finish ahead of Nancy Van de Ven. Amandine Verstappen was the winner of round 1 and the championship leader coming into today but a crash on the start forced her to come through the pack eventually finishing 10th.

The MXGP superstars were led by Team HRC’s Tim Gajser on the sighting lap and onto the starting line of Qualifying after posting the fast lap time in practice. Gajser continued his leading role as MXGP Qualifying began with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli just a few bike lengths further back.

Cairoli’s friend and fellow Italian Alessandro Lupino from Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki Racing was off to a flying start in third chased by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre and Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin along with another Italian, Standing Construct KTM’s Ivo Monticelli.

Febvre was the first to make a mistake in what is his first race back since injury. The Frenchman fell dropping to 10th before completing the first full lap. Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle made a charge up the inside of Monticelli to take 5th. Desalle’s teammate, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Julien Lieber reenacted the pass on Monticelli shortly after putting the pair of green machines 5th and 6th.

Monticelli lost traction and fell the same lap putting him in 19th and he continued to lose positions as the race went on. On lap 7 Desalle made a pass on Paulin for 4th and one lap later Cairoli shot past Gajser to take the lead. A quick attempt to retaliate from Gajser failed, while he instead latched on to the pace of Cairoli he was unable to get close enough for pass attempt.

At the finish Cairoli took pole position 2.6 seconds ahead of Gajser while Lupino crossed the line 30 seconds off the pace for third. Struggling in the race was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis, Team HRC’s Brian Bogers, and Standing Construct KTM’s Max Anstie.

Jasikonis suffered from a bad start and the addition of a crash on lap one made his race even more difficult finishing 18th. Bogers came into the weekend following his career best race result of 2nd in Mantova before after his 25th today is left hoping for improvement tomorrow. Anstie on the other hand was up into 7th position before a crash left him beat up and unable to continue.

Antonio Cairoli,"It was a good qualifying race, I like this track a lot,  I have had a lot of good races here. The jump out of the gate wasn't the best, I saw there was places I was losing time to Tim but I was able to adjust and make the pass to win the qualifying race which is good for tomorrow, hopefully I can get a good jump on the start and be on the inside again."

Arminas Jasikonis, “Today is not the day we wanted, I had a not so good start then also crashed on the first lap so I had to come from dead last, anyway my riding felt good, it’s just a pity for the gate pick tomorrow. It is not going to be easy but for sure we will do our best."

Brian Bogers,“Last weekend was quite good, especially the second race, so this was very good but the goal for me is just to keep building. This weekend so far has not really been good but every Saturday I struggle and Sunday is normally better so I'm focused on tomorrow."

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten:1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 25:05.809; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:02.638; 3. Alessandro Lupino (ITA, Kawasaki), +0:30.238; 4. While the MXGP Qualifying hosted insane battles throughout the MX2 action was even more intense! At the start of the race Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado had the lead ahead of F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi and the other Red Bull KTM of Tom Vialle. Meanwhile Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson was buried at the back of the field after crashing in the first turn.

Jacobi went for the lead straight away but Prado fought back to hold the position all while the red plated Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider Thomas Kjer Olsen watched from 3rd position. A slight mistake later in the first lap gave Jacobi just the space needed to take over the lead.

As the lead pair continued to fight BIKE IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei lost 4th to Honda 114 Motorsports’ Mitch Evans. Sanayei then fell victim to BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Brian Moreau and F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Roan Van de Moosdijk.

Back at the front the intensity was high with Prado taking the lead from Jacobi alongside Pit Lane, but the German didn’t let Prado slip away, instead he retook the premier position 4 turns later. Making the most impressive move of the race was Olsen who shot the gap between the pair in a corner for the lead. Olsen’s 2 for 1 caught both Jacobi and Prado off guard but their rivalry was yet to be finished.

During the final lap Prado tried to push the issue on Jacobi multiple times, in the first attempt Jacobi shut the door but on the second Prado made the pass however quick reactions from the #29 saw him cut down and fly back into 2nd. At the finish it was Olsen’s race craft winning out by 3.4 seconds ahead of Jacobi and another 9 tenths of a second ahead of Prado. Evans took 4th as Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame made a last lap pass to get 5th over Van de Moosdijk.

Thomas Kjer Olsen,“I got a 3rd place start and I was right behind them...I saw they were both battling pretty hard and I wanted to stay right on them in case I got an opportunity like I did. It was amazing to pass both of them in the same corner and get out front then ride my own lines. It is nice to win another qualifying race, it sets me up perfect on the gate for tomorrow."

Jed Beaton, “The new team is very different but I am really enjoying it and the bike is really awesome. Last weekend there was a lot of positives to take away but unfortunately I had that crash. It was a pretty big crash and I am still a bit stiff from that one but all in all it is slowly coming together, the track here is good this weekend so hopefully I just take 2 good starts tomorrow and get a good result."

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, Husqvarna), 23:52.428; 2. Henry Jacobi (GER, Kawasaki), +0:03.423; 3. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), +0:04.370; 4. Mitchell Evans (AUS, Honda), +0:17.924; 5. Mathys Boisrame (FRA, Honda), +0:22.798; 6. Roan Van De Moosdijk (NED, Kawasaki), +0:24.797; 7. Vlaanderen to miss MXGP of Portugal

Team HRC MX2 rider Calvin Vlaanderen has been ruled out of the MXGP of Portugal after getting an infection on his injured fibula. Despite riding successfully to two points scoring motos at the Monster Energy MXGP of Lombardia last weekend, his right leg was deemed to be in too bad of a condition to race in Agueda, and as a result the CRF250RW rider will undergo another surgery to clean up the area and make sure he is fully fit before competing again in the 2019 motocross world championship.

After a 10th place finish in race two at Mantova, things were seemingly heading in a positive direction after missing almost five weeks training on a bike. However, it became apparent this week that an infection developed and that Vlaanderen wouldn’t be able to compete in the sixth round of MX2 series.

With the MXGP of France taking place at St Jean D’Angely next weekend, on the 25-26 May, it will be tough for Vlaanderen to be fully prepared in time, but everyone at Team HRC will be doing their best to make sure that when he is ready to line up at the gate, he is in the best condition possible.

Calvin Vlaanderen: Obviously it is extremely disappointing not to be able to race in Agueda this weekend. I felt that after racing in Mantova that the bad news was behind me, but I knew that my ankle area wasn’t feeling right during the week and after getting it checked out I felt that it would be extremely tough to ride. Unfortunately I got an infection and it hasn’t healed enough to be able to race in Agueda so I will sit this round out but I know that the rest of my body is good to go and I hope to be able to showcase my speed at the next possible opportunity. Thank you to all the team and my fans who continue to support me and I look forward to being back on track as soon as possible.

Marcus Pereira de Freitas, HRC General Manager – MXGP: It is really unfortunate that Calvin developed an infection in his right leg. He has had a couple of good days testing and we were excited to see how he would go at this MXGP of Portugal, at a track that he has liked riding at previously. Everyone in the team now hopes that he is able to heal up completely and we will give him the best possible support so that he can get back on track when he is feeling 100%.
