Herlings and Jonass Take Top Spots in Turkish Qualifying

AFYON (Turkey) 01 September 2018 - Qualifying day at the MXGP of Turkey for the 18th round this season has wrapped up. The new circuit of Afyon led to some of the highest race speeds this season but no one topped the pace of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass as the took pole position in their respective categories.

The Afyon circuit was previously unknown which challenged riders and teams to adapt quickly. The welcoming atmosphere created by the Turkish Motorcycling Federation and the organization has been beyond expectation: Top level facilities and amazing hospitality combined today to provide the thousands of attendees a truly unique experience from the paddock events to concerts and autograph sessions ultimately leading up to world class racing.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has started his Turkish trip just as he has many others so far this season. Today’s time practice session top time slotted him with the first gate pack. One advantage led to another with his gate pick giving him the holeshot and lead.

Behind Herlings off the start was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and the lone Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Jeremy Van Horebeek as Romain Febvre was taken for medical evaluation after a crash in the time practice session. Febvre suffered a concussion in the accident and was taken to hospital for further medical examination. Positive feedback from the hospital showed no serious injury occurred, the former world champion will however sit out racing tomorrow.

Running in 4th place was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff in one of his strongest performances this season. The other Red Bull KTM belonging to Antonio Cairoli was back in 10th fighting with Standing Construct KTM Racing Team’s Valentin Guillod to take 8 then continuing on to Guillod’s teammate Kevin Strijbos.

Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer was 6th looking for a way past Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle. Cairoli made a pass on Seewer look easy when he dove to the inside and took the line away from the Swiss rider. Up next for the Sicilian was Desalle but it took 6 laps before making it past leaving only two to go.

However at the finish Herlings maintained his small gap over Gajser to take the win with the #243 of Gajser second and Van Horebeek 3rd. Coldenhoff held on to 4th while Cairoli took 5th.

Jeffrey Herlings: “I took a really good start, managed to take the holeshot and then check out. Pole position and fastest in time practice so I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully I can get 2 good starts and we will go from there."

Antonio Cairoli: “It was a difficult day for sure, with the injury I still am not feeling 100% and the track is very fast so it is hard for me to attack. There is still a lot of races and a lot of points on the table so we try to do our best."

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:29.102; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:01.573; 3. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:28.869; 4. Today’s MX2 Qualifying race in Afyon was wild off the start with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado taking the Holeshot over Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass impressively split Prado and Vlaanderen on the exit of turn 2 and took over the lead. Prado was quick to fire back and take the lead into turn 3 but left the inside open allowing Jonass the spot again.

The KTM exchange nearly gave Covington second from Prado but the young spaniard held on to the position. Covington then came under pressure from fellow Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory rider Thomas Kjer Olsen.

Vlaanderen, after his good start, fell back a few spots in the melee at the front before taking 5th from Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team’s Ben Watson. STC Husqvarna Racing’s Henry Jacobi then attacked Vlaanderen for 5th which eventually sent Vlaanderen over a berm.

Vlaanderen lost the spot not only to Jacobi but Watson as well. Vlaanderen made his second pass of the race on Watson to get into 6th but was unable to catch Jacobi by the finish. Jonass meanwhile won his second qualifying race in a row with Prado 2nd, Olsen 3rd, Covington 4th, and Jacobi 5th.

Pauls Jonass: “The Qualifying race went pretty good, I just didn't get the best jump off the start but I cut to the inside off the first turn and managed to pass Jorge. After that I just rode my own race and felt really good.”

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 25:15.214; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), +0:08.135; 3. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, Husqvarna), +0:11.205; 4. KTM AND DE CARLI TO CONTINUE RACING RELATIONSHIP UNTIL 2022

Red Bull KTM will continue to count on the experience and expertise of Claudio De Carli for another four years after renewal of the agreement with Italian and his technical crew until 2022.

The formalities between De Carli and the senior management of the KTM Group Race department were confirmed last week and will bring the immensely successful union beyond the end of the decade. The roots were laid at the end of 2009 and 2018 is the ninth season of top level racing together.

Along with Antonio Cairoli (and notable results with a host of other riders like Ken De Dycker, Max Nagl and Glenn Coldenhoff) De Carli has delivered a total of seven premier class FIM Motocross World Championship titles to the KTM brand including the manufacturer’s very first in 2010.

In that time De Carli has marshalled a race effort in two countries and with largely the same staff to capture crowns with both the KTM 350 SX-F and KTM 450 SX-F. He has now been instrumental in the fantastic development of seventeen year old Spaniard Jorge Prado to the top of the FIM MX2 standings in what is just the teenager’s second term in Grand Prix and within the Red Bull KTM squad.

Claudio De Carli: “To renew with KTM is very satisfying for me and I can only thank them for the trust they place in me. I really want to thank all my partners and the whole team: this deal is thanks to them and confirms that - within KTM and together with KTM - we are working in the right direction with great commitment, motivation and the same goals. During the last nine years we have achieved great results. We have won a lot and we have suffered and experienced difficult times: we must continue with this same team spirit and passion to face new challenges. Our sport is evolving; it is more and more professional and 'global' and is opening to new frontiers, new countries where we are surprised with how much warmth and passion we are welcomed. For us the aim is always the same: to give the maximum in the pride of KTM colours.”

Robert Jonas, Vice President KTM Offroad: “Claudio, his loyal staff and, of course, the riders in his care have made such a strong and memorable impact for the company since the beginning of the partnership for the 2010 season. They are a backbone of Red Bull KTM and have been so emphatic that it was a very easy decision for us to continue this relationship. Our success and achievements in motocross have been outstanding in the last ten years and this is such a potent factor of our DNA and racing identity. The value of Claudio’s work in motocross can now also be seen with how much Jorge has evolved. He has been able to steer and help a great champion like Tony but also focus on the next generation. It’s great to see and we hope for many more good times over the coming years.”

Febvre Wants Podiums

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Romain Febvre has been in brilliant form of late. Having been selected for Team France for the October held Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, the Frenchman knows that he needs to take good form into the biggest event of the year, set for the Redbud circuit in America.

The 2015 MXGP World Champion picked up a 3-2 result in Switzerland nearly two weeks ago, and then backed it up with 4-5 scores in Bulgaria. Now placed fifth in the MXGP championship points, he is just five points behind Tim Gajser in fourth place and will be looking to catch and pass the two-times world champion in the series points after this weekend’s GP in Turkey.

"I feel OK after two back-to-back GPs,” Febvre said. “For me it is better to have the GPs closer together, so I don't lose the rhythm from racing, so I actually like it. I was happy to stand on the podium in Switzerland, and last weekend in Bulgaria I was happy with my speed and the way I was riding, but my starts were not great and on that kind of track it was tough to past. I finish fourth and fifth in the races, which was not enough for the podium. I am disappointed with that, but it is what it is. I am looking forward to racing in Turkey, my goal remains the same, I want to be on the podium and to close the gap to the third place in the championship. I will do everything I possibly can to achieve this."

As for last weekend, it was a weekend he enjoyed, but starts and trouble with passing riders cost him another podium finish. He knows that getting back on the box in Turkey he will need to improve his starts and is looking forward to this weekend’s event and the unknown of a new circuit in the calendar.

"My weekend started good. I had good speed yesterday, but I missed the starts and this track was very tough to pass on. Everyone's speed was really close, and it was difficult to make a difference on the other guys. It was very dry with limited line choice. I had a small crash in the second race, and I just tried to give 100% to come back. I am a little bit disappointed with the result, especially for the championship, but I will just look forward to this weekend in Turkey."

Once Turkey is out of the way, trips to Holland and Italy will give him more chances to impress, before he tries to help France defend the Chamberlain Trophy in America at the start of October. For now though, all his motivation is for a podium in Turkey.
