MX2

Lawrence and France

Australian rider Hunter Lawrence is really having a hard time in the 2018 season. Having won the MX2 class at the 2017 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, many expected him to fight for the MX2 championship, and really give the Red Bull KTM Factory riders, Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado some challenges.

Sickness, injuries and just plan bad form has seen the Aussie struggle, and presently he sits in 14th place in the series points. His season started well in Argentina, with 2-6 results, and he followed that up with 6-6 scores in the cold of Holland and then 5-5 in round three in Spain, but an injury saw him miss three rounds in Italy (Lawrence sustained a broken middle metacarpal in his right hand during Saturday’s timed practice session at the MXGP of Trentino), Portugal, and Russia, before he returned with zero points in Latvia and again a minor head injury when he knocked himself out, meaning he also missed the next round due to the medical team not allowing him to race.

The youngster from down under then missed Germany, and came back in England with just seven points, but was able to find some form with 23 points in France last weekend, and a 6th place finish in the opening race.

"The first race wasn’t great off the start as I crashed so I had to regroup from last place after that incident. I was coming through the pack well though, showing good speed and I got back to sixth. Unfortunately, I hit a bit of a wall with about 10 minutes to go, so I had to settle for sixth, which wasn’t too bad given the start I had.

A crash in race two in France meant that he could only manage a 13th position on the track but did score a top ten finish overall.

“In the second race I was perhaps a bit too impatient and I clashed with another rider on the opening lap again. I fought back to around 10th place and was making a move on the red plate holder Pauls Jonass when I picked a rut that had caved in, and I lost my front wheel and fell over. I tried my best to salvage whatever I could get and that ended up being 13th place for 10th overall. I think this weekend was just about positive because I got some more bike fitness, but this isn’t where I want to be, so I need to keep fighting hard to improve."

Now onto another round in Italy, and you can be sure the Australian will want to try and regain the form that saw him have such success at the MXoN, and also a few rounds in 2017. It has been a long hard season for Lawrence, and no doubt at one point throughout this season we should see the real Hunter Lawrence race.

Herlings and Prado Finish Strong in France

SAINT JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 10 June 2018 - The 2018 MXGP of France has concluded at the beautiful Saint Jean d’Angely circuit where Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado stole the show and the overall wins.

The whole weekend from Saturday morning until the final podium on Sunday, French fans filled the hillsides and watched the best riders of the FIM Motocross World Championship. An overnight storm naturally watered the track for today and even if it was soft in the morning it later developed into prime conditions. The occasional air horns and gas powered noise makers were drowned out by even louder cheers from the thousands of spectators.

MXGP Race 1 was off to an interesting start when Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings used his first gate pick to line up on the far outside. The gamble however payed off as the harder packed dirt gave him a head start and a massive Fox Holeshot. Herlings lead only grew as he put in fast lap after fast lap.

Crossing the line second in what was easily his best start of the season was Standing Construct KTM’s Valentin Guillod who was followed by another Swiss rider, Wilvo Yamaha MXGP Official Team’s Jeremy Seewer.

However by the end of the first lap Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, along with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Antonio Cairoli, had made it around the Swiss duo.

Desalle then latched onto the speed of Herlings while Coldenhoff fought Cairoli to stay in the top 3. Cairoli was throwing everything at Coldenhoff from different rhythms to the inside of a corner on one lap and to the outside on the next. For 9 laps Cairoli tried to get past Coldenhoff before finally making into third. All the while Herlings pulled away from Desalle.

Slightly further back Seewer was 5th ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre. On lap 13 of 17 total Febvre was passed by Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who was on a late charge. Gajser was 8th on lap 2, but after his pass on Febvre he was in a rhythm and carried on to pass Seewer and Coldenhoff finishing 4th behind Herlings, Desalle, and Cairoli.

At the start of Race 2 Herlings tried for another Fox Holeshot but had no such luck and was outside the top 5 in the first corner while Cairoli led Seewer over the line. Gajser massed Seewer on the opening lap as Herlings made several quick passes to get into 4th.

By the end of lap 2 Herlings was third but Cairoli and Gajser had already started to pull away. The French fans were on their feet as Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin moved from 5th to 4th with a pass on Seewer.

3 laps later the home crowd was again yelling because Febvre was alongside Seewer. At the halfway point Herlings made a pass on Gajser stick for second and looked forward to Cairoli in the lead. At the same time the French favorites, Paulin and Febvre, where in a battle for 4th. Febvre tried taking the spot in the first turn just past pit lane and on his second attempt in 2 laps made it happen.

At the front Cairoli’s lead was gone and Herlings made a pass at the top of the uphill with just over 4 laps to go. Cairoli was unable to counter and settled for 2nd with Gajser taking 3rd, Febvre 4th, and Paulin 5th. For the overall podium Herlings stood on the top step ahead of Cairoli, and Gajser.

Desalle missed the podium by just 1 point and was the lone Monster Energy Kawasaki rider in the race today since Julien Lieber opted not to start following his crash from Matterley Basin last week.

Jeffrey Herlings: “It was a really good weekend, I had pole position yesterday and I got a good FOX Holeshot in the first race and I managed to lead the whole race, do my own thing and get the win. In the second race I really had to work for it, I messed up the start and I had to work my way up from around tenth place. It was a good weekend and I’m looking forward to Ottobiano, it is one of my favorite tracks.”

Antonio Cairoli: “I feel good but for sure this week was not one of the best. Jeffrey is very fast at the moment so you can not really rest and you always need to be on the pace. I took second which is ok but for sure we will work and want to be more competitive for the whole race and this is what we will try to do.”

Tim Gajser: “I’m happy with the results and the whole day, yesterday I was struggling a little but today the track was more technical with many ruts so I liked it. I want to work hard, I will go home and work even harder, next week is Ottobiano and I will give my best there as well.”

MX2 Race 1 started with a rarely seen FOX Holeshot from Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington ahead of STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi. The usual MX2 holeshot king, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, was third while points leader and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Pauls Jonass was back in 10th.

Several positions were shifted in the opening lap with Prado falling as and Jacobi losing spots to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Jonass. Prado’s crash dropped him to eighth but he rebounded quickly gaining 3 positions on lap 2.

Jonass meanwhile was battling with Jacobi for 3rd and the pressure of Prado closing pushed him back around the German. Prado then made a pass on Jacobi 2 laps later. Prado then had his sights set on Jonass and after chasing his teammate for laps took an outside line which then turned to the inside allowing him to push past.

Next to challenge Jacobi was Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team’s Jago Geerts and Honda 114 Motorsport’s Hunter Lawrence. Lawrence went down on the start and was charging back to the front from 17th. Geerts passed Jacobi on lap 11 and 2 laps after Jacobi fell which helped Lawrence into 6th.

For the start of Race 2 Jonass returned to the front of the field but only until he fell on the first half of the opening lap. Jonass completed the first official lap in 17th while Prado pulled away from Geerts in the lead.

Yamaha SM Action - M.C. Migliori’s newly signed rider, Michele Cervellin, was 3rd the first laps before Olsen jumped past on a charge where he gained 3 positions in one lap. Cervellin also lost a spot to Covington and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen.

Pauls Jonass was on a mission to salvage points and did so climbing up the standings from 17th to 6th with his pass on Cervellin during lap 13. Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Ben Watson was also fighting his way through the field and finished 7th.

When the checkered flag came out Prado took the win over Geerts and Covington who found his way past Olsen. On the overall podium Prado and Covington tied in points but the victory went to the Spaniard with his better performance in race 2. Olsen rounded out the podium making it the first time the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team had both riders in the top 3.

Jorge Prado: “I was really happy with the riding, I didn’t expect to ride so well in these conditions. The second race was just perfect, it is a shame the Pauls crashed in the first lap, but it was good for me after I took the lead and got the win.”

Thomas Covington: “Overall it was a really good weekend for me, I have been struggling the first half of the season so it is good to get some consistent races in a weekend. I felt really strong, especially at the end, I really found my rhythm.”

Thomas Kjer Olsen: “It was a really good weekend for the team, I am happy for the team and for myself. I am really happy that I was able to pull off a 2-4 this weekend. I was able to be aggressive in the first few laps and I’m happy to be on the podium.”

Pauls Jonass: “It is not the best result, I lost some points in the championship but it is a long season so I’m not worried about that and I’m already looking forward to next weekend.”

Boisrame and Guadagnini Take French Wins

SAINT JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 10 June 2018 - Joining the MXGP and MX2 racing this weekend was the European championship classes of EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. An amazing rider turn out in both classes led to 2 groups for each where in the end only 40 Qualified to race in each. Taking the overall victories at the French race were Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame and Team Maddi Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini.

The success of the winners was aided by the thousands of French fans cheering them on from the edges of the circuit. The hillsides, packed with passionate motocross fans, came to life as the gate dropped for the races. The atmosphere is unmatched by any race so far this season and the memory of winning in front of the massive crowd will stick with both Boisrame and Guadagnini.

The final race of Saturday was the EMX250 class where Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame fought against his fellow French competitors for the win. At first it was BUD Racing Monster Energy’s Brian Moreau who held second but he lost 2 positions letting Tom Vialle take over the runner up spot and ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha’s Roan Van de Moosdijk into 3rd.

Coming into the weekend REVO Husqvarna UK’s Mel Pocock was leading Boisrame by 9 points in the Championship Standings. Pocock was 5th on the opening lap and by lap 7 he was into 4th past Moreau. Valentin Teillet also passed Moreau a lap after Pocock but continued forward and passed the #119 2 laps later. Moreau found some more speed on the final lap to pass Pocock back and take 5th.

Sunday’s Race 2 was also filled with French success with Bud Racing Monster Energy’s Pierre Goupillon taking the lead on the first lap as last rounds winner, Carglass Honda’s Steven Clarke ran second. Team DIGA Procross’ Dylan Walsh was 2nd on the first lap but struggle to hold the position and was passed by Moreau, Boisrame, and WZ Racing’s Jeremy Sydow on lap 2.

Clarke worked to catch Goupillon and was successful but not able to make a pass. Just slightly further back Boisrame pursued Moreau and took the position from the #225 after a mistake. Moreau however responded a lap later and reclaimed 3rd.

Across the finish Goupillon won the race ahead of Clarke, Moreau, Boisrame, and Sydow. In the overall standings Boisrame took the victory and the red plate while Moreau was second and Van de Moosdijk claimed 3rd after scoring vital points by passing 2 riders on the last lap of race 2.

Leading off the start in Saturday’s Race 1 and never looking back was Yamaha Europe EMX125’s Thibault Benistant at what is his only home race of the season. Benistant created a massive lead which continued to grow throughout the race.

Behind Benistant the battle for second position was on with 3 riders duking it out for the spot. Running in 5th during the early part of the race was KTM Junior’s Rene Hofer who came into the weekend with a massive points lead. On lap 5 Hofer started to make passes and by lap 7 the Austrian found his way up to 2nd.

Taking the 3rd spot was Yamaha Europe EMX125’s Rick Elzinga just ahead of Team Maddi Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini. Both Elzinga and Guadagnini passed F4E Racing KTM’s James Scott and MOTOBLOUZ HB Racing’s Florian Miot. Guadagnini had arguably the most impressive ride in race 1 after starting the first lap in 11th but finishing the race 4th.

Today’s Race 2 was held in the morning and the riders where the first on the track after an overnight storm. The already challenging Saint Jean d’Angely circuit pushed the riders and their machines to perform at the highest level today.

Taking the early lead was Guillem Farres Plaza from Spain but after 3 laps in front he was out of the race along with Team VRT’s Tom Guyon who was third on the first lap before moving to second. With the early leaders out of the racing Mattia Guadagnini found himself in the lead.

After only two laps completed the red plate holder Hofer was down and unable to restart his bike. Rick Elzinga found himself in a strong 2 for 5 laps before dropping to 7th and an eventual 15th. Elzinga’s teammate and Race 1 winner Thibault Benistant was up into 5th by lap 4 which was his position on lap 12 of 13. Unable to complete the final lap Benistant lost a position to James Scott but was the first of a handful of riders to complete 13 laps.

On the final lap the leaders crossed the line with Mattia Guadagnini winning the race, MOTOBLOUZ HB Racing’s Matheo Miot 2nd, his brother Florian Miot 3rd, KTM DIGA Junior Racing’s Emil Weckman 4th, and Rick Elzinga 5th. In the overall standings Guadagnini took the top spot with Benistant 2nd, and Florian Miot 3rd.

Supercross Returns to Paris in 2018

Saturday’s MXGP of France racing left many French fans wanting even more. Just after the Qualifying race’s press conference in the evening another French event was announced to national and international media.

Longtime event organizer from France, Xavier Audouard, spoke to the media about the return of Paris Supercross for 2018. The event’s long traditions continue this year at the same venue as 2017, the massive and newly built U Arena in the business district of Paris.

Last year was the first time at the new venue and the event was a huge success. Boasting a track the size of those in the US the event will attract large teams, important riders, and international fans. Already committed to the event are Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Marvin Musquin, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jason Anderson, and Geico Honda’s Jeremy Martin among others.

The event is scheduled for the 17th and 18th of November, for more information visit http://www.supercrossparis.com/

Herlings and Covington Fastest in French Qualifying

SAINT JEAN D’ANGELY (France) 09 June 2018 - The MXGP of France is off to a massively successful start, especially for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington as they won their respective qualifying races.

Aside from the amazing riding from the two winners the event itself was full of amazing fans who filled the French hillside to watch the Qualifying actions. The weather was predicted to rain but the mother nature instead provided sunshine and blue skies along with warm temperatures. The redesigned track and its conditions where in top shape with deep lines and technical sections challenging the top riders.

Joining the MXGP and MX2 racing this weekend is the classes of EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. Due to a massive number of rider entries both classes had to be split into 2 groups for Free and Time Practice then each had a Last Chance Qualifying Race.

The 40 top riders lined the gate for Race 1 of EMX125 presented by FMF Racing first. Leading from the beginning and never looking back was France’s Thibault Benistant on his Yamaha Europe EMX125 machine. Benistant’s lead was massive throughout the race but the battle for second was between 3 or 4 riders at any given point. Taking second place after running in 4th the early stages of the race was the red plate holder, KTM Junior’s Rene Hofer. Taking the 3rd spot was Yamaha Europe EMX125’s Rick Elzinga just ahead of Team Maddi Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini.

The final race of the day was that of the EMX250 class where Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame held off his fellow French competitors. First BUD Racing Monster Energy’s Brian Moreau was second but he fell back letting Tom Vialle take over the runner up spot. Finishing third was ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha’s Roan Van de Moosdijk which made him the only non French rider in the top 5.

MXGP’s Qualifying Race hosted another dominating performance from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings. Choosing to line up on the furthest inside gate, after scoring the fastest lap time in both Free and Time Practice, Herlings took the holeshot and set sail. Herlings led every lap of the 13 recorded and won by 17.9 seconds.

Though Herlings was on his own the battle for 2nd was on between 4 of the best riders in the world championship. Leading the group of 4 was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin. Paulin was massively improved after today compared to a week ago. With the roar of the French crowd behind him Paulin managed a small cushion between himself and those giving chase.

First of the riders in pursuit was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser but just behind him was the former world champion and French fan favorite, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre. Febvre, with the added pressure of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli giving chase, pushed his way past Gajser on lap 9 after great battles.

Cairoli, who had a collision between himself and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Clement Desalle followed the moves of Febvre to take another position from Gajser on the following lap. Desalle eventually finished the MXGP Qualifying race in 19th.

Cairoli would however take third from Febvre on the final lap and close onto the back wheel of Paulin at the finish. Also having a strong Qualifying race was BOS GP’s Evgeny Bobryshev with a 6th place.

Jeffrey Herlings: “The main focus is the start for tomorrow and luckily we got it all dialed in today. Tomorrow we are going to go out, do our best, and like I said focus on the start and work from there.”

Romain Febvre: “I had a good start, that was the main focus, after I made a mistake and stalled my bike losing 2 positions but I passed Tony and then I passed Gajser and  was third but then Tony passed me, at the end it was a good day.”

French rider Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Benoit Paturel managed to finish qualifying in 15th position to which he said: “I feel ok this week, not perfect but I will do my best tomorrow. It is an amazing GP in front of the home crowd, it was a good memory for me in 2016 in MX2 where I finished second after Jeffrey. I am excited to ride tomorrow and I hope to get my best result.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:35.251; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:17.990; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:19.988; 4. Breaking up the KTM party at the front of the field today was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington. Covington, who had a strong start to the race in 3rd, by the end of lap 1 was into second past the fast starter of Henry Jacobi on his STC Racing Husqvarna.

Leading on from the end of the first lap was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado. Prado, now known for his strong starting ability, was just alongside Jacobi in the first turn but Jacobi’s line uphill prevailed at first.

Among the most notable action on the start was the 3 rider crash involving Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson, and LRT KTM’s Davy Pootjes. All three took a minute to go again but each rejoined the racing and came through the pack. Olsen recovered to 13th, Watson to 12th, and Pootjes to 20th after another scare on lap 10 cost him a handful of positions.

Back at the front Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass was giving chase to Covington who in turn was looking for a way around Prado. On lap 7, just before coming down the middle section of the track, Covington took the lead from Prado and by the bottom of the hill Jonass was around his teammate also.

The remaining 6 laps Jonass chased Covington and even made some stabs at the leader but none were successful. Across the finish line it was Covington from Jonass, Prado, Jacobi, and Hitachi KTM UK’s Conrad Mewse who made a last lap turn pass on Team Diga Procross’ Iker Larranaga for 5th.

Thomas Covington: “I just really have to focus on my start tomorrow like Jeffrey said and we worked really hard this week to try and improve the bike off the gate, we have just really been working on starts this week and I think it is going to show”.

The French – History Lesson

Heading into this weekend MXGP of France, set for the undulating circuit of St Jean d’Angely, it isn’t hard to look back at the history of the French motocross riders and feel they have done their share in making the FIM Motocross World Championship a better championship.

Eight Frenchman have tasted championship champagne at the end of a GP season and been crowned FIM Motocross World Champion. The French have picked up 13 titles in total as many of their world champs scored more than one championship in their careers.

Back in 1986 Jacky Vimond became the first ever French rider to win a FIM Motocross World Championship. He did so in the 250cc class, and while Vimond was the pioneer of success for French riders it was Jean Michele Bayle who won 125cc and 250cc titles in 1988 and 1989 and started a frenzy of interest and success for the tri-colors riders.

Bayle who moved to America soon after his GP success in 1988 did still compete in Europe in the winter at the annual Bercy Supercross. Beating the big American riders and making a long list of young French kids in attendance wish they could be like the good looking and very marketable Bayle.

It didn’t come straight away though, and while names like David Vuillemin, Stephane Roncada and Mickael Pichon looked to become the next J.M.Bayle it wasn’t until the summer of 1996 that another amazingly talented Frenchman stole the hearts of the motocross world.

When a 16-year-old Sebastien Tortelli picked up the 125cc world championship ahead of British rider Paul Malin a new era in French motocross was born. Tortelli added the 250 championship in 1998 after a season long battle with Stefan Everts and this opened the flood-gates for French success.

Soon to follow came world titles for Frederic Bolley in the 250cc class in 1999 and 2000, Mickael Pichon also in the 250cc class in 2001 and 2002, Mickael Maschio in MX2 in 2002, and Marvin Musquin and Jordi Tixier in the MX2 class in 2009 and 2010 and 2014.

The French have also won the Motocross of Nations on five occasions, in 2001 at the famous Namur, Belgium circuit, Kegums, Latvia in 2014, Ernèe, France in 2015, Maggiora, Italy in 2016 and last years MXoN at Matterley Basin in England.

You can be sure when the Grand Prix of France fires up on Saturday morning the always large crowd will be standing as close as possible to the circuit to cheer on their local heroes, and you can be sure Paulin, and Febvre will be wanting more than anything to repay their countrymen with victory come Sunday night.
