Herlings and Prado Gain More Momentum in Germany

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 20 May 2018 - The 8th stop of FIM Motocross World Championship’s 2018 season, the MXGP of Germany has been completed today in Teutschenthal. Claiming the German GP wins where the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders of Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP and Jorge Prado in MX2.

A reworked track and sunshine led to perfect conditions in front of thousands of German motocross fans and created an amazing atmosphere for racing. The hills of Teutschenthal were filled with the some of the loudest and most energetic fans seen so far this season who would witness some of the most interesting racing to match.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings continued to add to his winning resume this weekend with double race wins and both were by substantial margin over Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin.

Race 1 started with a season first Fox Holeshot from Paulin but Herlings was right alongside the Frenchman and took the position almost immediately. In third behind the pair was Gajser and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre.

On the first lap Febvre’s Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP teammate, Jeremy Van Horebeek, ran in 6th just behind Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle. However only a lap later the #89 of Van Horebeek was moved back by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli.

Cairoli proceeded to the back wheel of Desalle for several laps before he lost control in a rutted turn and dropped his KTM. The mistake cost Cairoli but only in the way of time as he remounted in the same position in which he fell.

Meanwhile Herlings again pulled away from the field leaving Paulin and Gajser to battle over second. On the 14th lap of 18 Gajser made a pass on Paulin and then pulled away from the Husqvarna rider. Across the finish Herlings won by just over 16 seconds with Gajser 2nd, Paulin 3rd, while Cairoli took 6th behind Desalle and Febvre.

Race 2’s start was remarkably similar as Paulin took the Fox Holeshot but Herlings took the lead before the second corner. A mistake from Paulin on the opening lap allowed Gajser into second but Paulin quickly rejoined the race just ahead of his fellow Frenchman, Febvre.

Behind Febvre was Van Horebeek on lap 1 with Desalle and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff behind the pair of YZ450s. On the second lap Van Horebeek made a mistake which put him off the side of the bike and into the path of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Julien Lieber. Lieber was able to remount his Kawasaki in 15th but Van Horebeek would not resume the race.

The incident helped Cairoli to move forward in the running order from 9th to 6th once again finding himself behind Desalle. In the following 15 laps the top 8 riders remained in the same position before Febvre dropped 3 positions in lap 16 and BOS GP’s Evgeny Bobryshev lost a 8th position to TM Racing Factory Team’s Max Nagl.

Nagl, racing at his home GP, had an impressive comeback to the 8th spot after starting in 16th, all with the help of the vocal support from his fans. Across the finish line Herlings beat out Gajser by over 28 seconds with Paulin, Desalle, and Cairoli rounding out the top five. In the overall result the math was easy for the consistent 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers, Herlings, Gajser, and Paulin. Cairoli would end up outside the top 5 in 6th with Desalle 4th and Febvre 5th.

Jeffrey Herlings: “Both races the riding was really good, I couldn’t wish for anything else, I led every single lap both today and this weekend, so I’m very pleased…it was a dream come true kind of weekend.”

Tim Gajser who took his second podium of the 2018 season: “I’m feeling good, I’m happy with the weekend actually, I was quite consistent and also I like the track here so I was looking forward to this race. It was actually the first race I was feeling comfortable this year…so hopefully we can continue to work hard.”

Gautier Paulin: “The racing went consistent, of course I want to be more up front, I got the Fox Holeshot in both races but then Jeffrey passed me directly after. But it was good, I’ve tried to improve myself but the bike was working awesome and finally we’ve improved our start so it was good.”

In the MX2 class racing was close throughout the field but especially among Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and Pauls Jonass, along with Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson, and STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi.

At the start of Race 1 the KTM pair of Prado and Jonass rocketed out of the gate while Hitachi KTM UK’s Conrad Mewse crashed down the start straight. Prado took the Fox Holeshot but just like Paulin in the MXGP class Prado was passed right away by the points leader, Jonass.

With Prado chasing Jonass for the lead on the opening lap the German MX2 hero Jacobi ran in 3rd. Unfortunately for Jacobi his Husqvarna lost traction as he jumped up onto the start straight causing him to bobble and letting both Vlaanderen and Watson past.

While Vlaanderen put his head down to catch Jonass and Prado, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was battling with F&H Racing Team’s Jed Beaton. The battle between the Aussie and the Dane ended badly however as Olsen scrubbed his Husqvarna into the side of Beaton’s Kawasaki. The mid air mishap sent both riders down but both managed to continue the race. Beaton got back up in around 13th while Olsen was in 19th.

As the Beaton and Olsen worked their way forward, Prado was unable to find a way around Jonass as Vlaanderen was applying pressure to the Spaniard. Luckily for Prado, Vlaanderen was also struggling to find a preferred passing spot and both remained 2nd and 3rd whilst Jonass won the race. Well worth mentioning was Beaton’s charge through the pack to finish 7th while Olsen only managed to reach 15th.

Race 2 started with another Fox Holeshot from Jorge Prado after hitting elbows with Jonass into the first turn. Prado clearly learned a lesson from race 1 and did not allow Jonass to take the lead early again.

Again in 3rd after the start was Jacobi who managed to hold the position longer. Just behind Jacobi with an amazing start was the number 931 of Andrea Zanotti from San Marino. On the 3rd lap Olsen found his way into the 4th spot but only 2 laps after taking the position Vlaanderen took it away. Olsen then came under heat from Watson who made it past the Dane on lap 11. Only a lap after that Jacobi was moved back by both Vlaanderen and Watson.

Prado crossed the finish 5 seconds ahead of Jonass leaving the #61 with the overall. Even though the pair leave tied in points the overall win for Prado was significant and it gave Claudio de Carli his 100th win as Team Manager. Vlaanderen took his 2nd third place finish of the day marking his best ever result and giving him his first MX2 podium of not only 2018 but also aboard his new HRC bike.

Jorge Prado: “The first race was quite tough and in the second race I knew the start was really important, I don’t know what happened off the gate… but I went into to Pauls a little bit and we kind of fought into the first corner to see who would get the FOX Holeshot but I was on the inside and after that I could just lead every lap so I’m pretty happy.”

Pauls Jonass: “Actually I’m feeling good, I didn’t gain anything but I didn’t lose anything so it is still positive.”

Calvin Vlaanderen reached his first podium of the 2018 MX2 season: “It was a good weekend overall, I had a good feeling on the bike. It was good to hold on for third with 3-3 for the day and it is good to give back to the team for all their hard work and to get on the podium.”

Herlings and Prado Grab German Qualifying Wins

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 19 May 2018 - The 2018 MXGP of Germany has gotten underway on the hills of Teutschenthal! Continuing to add on to their recent success was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado as they won their respective qualifying races.

There was plenty of action behind the pair of winners however with bar banging battles and even a mechanical mishap for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli! The longtime motocross track held all the racing in front of the vocal German MXGP fans with great weather.

On top of the MXGP and MX2 action the German fans had the added benefit of being able to watch the racing from WMX and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. In the WMX class the first racing was again a battle between the Yamaha’s, more specifically Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan and MXFONTARACING Yamaha’s Kiara Fontanesi. Even though Duncan took the holeshot, Fontanesi lead the majority of the race. The pair of title contenders battled on their way through lapped traffic but in the end Duncan came out victorious and extend her points lead. In the later stages of the day EMX125 presented by FMF Racing had their first race where KTM Junior’s Rene Hofer took his 2nd race win in a row, this time ahead of Team Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Mattia Guadagnini and Jezyk Racing’s Eddie Wade.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has been impressive to say the least this season and today the Dutch sensation put in another strong ride. Herlings led from the first corner after drag racing down the long Teutschenthal start and beating out Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin.

Paulin’s strong start placed him second but left him under pressure from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Running behind the early top three was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser then Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek and Romain Febvre.

A strong start also helped the #77 Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki of Alessandro Lupino to battle inside the top ten. Lupino and his privateer Kawasaki was running in 7th just behind Febvre on the opening laps but soon come under pressure the Monster Energy Kawasaki of Julien Lieber. Lieber made a pass just before the pair returned to the start straight and Lupino then tried to retaliate by jumping long to the inside but Lieber was unaffected by the move. Next to get by the Italian was Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer. Seewer, who won the MX2 overall here last year continued his charge forward also passing Lieber.

Back at the front of the field Cairoli was applying pressure to Paulin but then had a bike issue. The mishap forced Cairoli to stop and fix the front end of his machine before continuing. While the defending MXGP Champion was stopped, Gajser, Van Horebeek, Febvre, and Seewer all made it past. With only 3 laps remaining Cairoli was in 7th and unable to improve his position as Herlings took the race win with Paulin 2nd and Gajser 3rd.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, who celebrates his 29th birthday today, had to come back from last place after a crash on the first lap. Desalle managed to take his Factory Kawasaki up into 21st and will hope to rebound in tomorrow’s racing.

Jeffrey Herlings in the qualifying press conference said: “The start was fine, Paulin had a better jump but then I was on the inside so I had a few meters less and out dragged him so it was really good to start out front. The speed was good and my bike was very good so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

TM Racing Factory Team’s Max Nagl is hoping to come away with a season best result for his fans at his home GP but struggled in today’s Qualifying race when he scored an 18th place finish. Nagl in the press conference said: “As always it is really nice to be at your home GP and you expect something a bit special. The problem was that I was reallyfar outside on the start and I couldn’t do anything from there, you get pushed in the first corner and end up somewhere in the back of the field, then after I had a good ride and a good rhythm. Now I’m looking forward to tomorrow because we will have a bit better gate pick, a little more inside and hopefully we can make something good tomorrow, also for the fans it would be nice.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:12.661; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:04.591; 3. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:07.775; 4. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:12.921; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:18.446; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Yamaha), +0:20.506; 7. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:22.946; 8. Julien Lieber (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:25.582; 9. Alessandro Lupino (ITA, Kawasaki), +0:26.912; 10. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), +0:28.253

In the MX2 Qualifying race it was another Holeshot from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado with his Teammate, Pauls Jonass, just behind. Chasing down the 2 KTM’s was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington but he wasn’t alone, Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen was shadowing the American.

Vlaanderen looked good all day even scoring the fastest lap of the time practice session over Jonass by a close 6 hundredths of a second. The South African hounded the back wheel of Covington for the first 4 laps before taking over 3rd on lap 5.

Running in 5th position was Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson while his Teammate, Jago Geerts, was in 9th behind New Zealand’s Dylan Walsh who traditionally races the EMX250 championship. Walsh had the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing bike of Thomas Kjer Olsen just ahead of him on lap one but by lap 2 Olsen had made his way to 6th with a pass on F&H Racing Team’s Jed Beaton.

Walsh however made a slight mistake on the 9th lap when he dropped his Husqvarna in a turn. Luckily for the Kiwi the error only cost him one position to TM Racing Factory Team’s Samuele Bernardini.

Meanwhile Prado left Jonass to race on his own but Olsen was still making passes, by the finish Olsen passed both Watson and his teammate, Covington, to take 4th. Prado took the win with Jonass second and Vlaanderen 3rd.

Jorge Prado in the qualifying press conference said: “I could finish the race in 1st after riding really good. Everybody is going really fast so if you have a bad start it is quite difficult to get to the front, but I had a good start so I’m happy with my race.”

STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi has had some strong results this season so far but today’s qualifying was not one of them. Jacobi racing in his home GP said, “(On the first lap) I just crashed, the front wheel slipped away and I was last but I did my best to come back to a little better gate position for tomorrow. Overall I feel quite good on the track… I think I can turn it around for tomorrow, I think even the 15th gate pick is ok and I can get a top ten start, I will see, I will work from there.”

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 24:43.710; 2. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:11.311; 3. Calvin Vlaanderen (RSA, Honda), +0:15.290; 4. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, Husqvarna), +0:16.661; 5. Thomas Covington (USA, Husqvarna), +0:17.650; 6. Ben Watson (GBR, Yamaha), +0:18.323; 7. Jed Beaton (AUS, Kawasaki), +0:19.387; 8. Two Winners – Herlings and Olsen

We had two winners in Latvia last weekend, with Jeffrey Herlings winning in the MXGP class and Thomas Kjer Olsen in MX2. While Herlings 1-1 victory was sensational, it was consistency that saw Olsen get his 1-2 overall win, but both men showed amazing speed around a very rough and technical circuit of Kegums.

“Yes, it was a good ride,” Herlings said. “I made a mistake in the start and it was tough to get a good start. I rode really good, came from 10th place and on a track like this tony is also good and to close such a big gap and then pull a gap myself. My condition is good, I am physically ok in warm conditions. I made a mistake in the second race, nearly came off, I hit the bank and lost a few seconds and I knew it was go time and I started pushing and I could have gone faster than I was, but the track was difficult. I prefer to get a second here or there than go to the hospital. Tony is 10 years older than me, so I have some time still, but people don’t see the tough side of the sport.”

As for Olsen, his consistent podiums finishes in 2018 have really made him hungry for GP success and last Sunday that win came. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider put together two solid results and came away with his second Latvian GP win in as many years.

“I have been on the podium more and I have wanted that win a little more. Last year I was shooting for the podium place more. I don’t know if this feels better or not, but this definitely feels good. A win is a win and it definitely feels good. In the points I am a little behind the two top guys, but to be honest, we made some changes to the bike coming into this weekend and it worked out great and I am really happy about that. Now we go into Germany, which is also a really cool track, so I am just trying to improve all the time, and this was a step in the right direction.

The two will now head to the hard-pack of German, both looking to continue on from Latvia, Herlings the favourite going into the eight round of the MXGP championship, but the German round has also been a good place for his Red Bull KTM team-mate Antonio Cairoli, so anything is possible.

Olsen will enter Germany as the outsider, looking in at the fire power of the Red Bull KTM duo of Pauls Jonass and Jorge Prado. He showed enough in Latvia to beat the orange army, but will he also be able to contain them next weekend?

MXGP Gears Up for German GP

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 16 May 2018 - The 2018 MXGP World Championship continues this weekend at the hilly Teutschenthal circuit for the 8th round of the season, the MXGP of Germany. Only days ago Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli went bar to bar at the MXGP of Latvia but Herlings came out victorious. This weekend the advantage may be in favor of Cairoli however with him historically seeing much more success on the German circuit.

The hard packed Teutschenthal circuit first hosted the FIM Motocross World Championship in 1971 but since has seen several winners. Last year Cairoli topped Herlings in Germany to takes his 5th career victory on the circuit while the now Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP rider, Jeremy Seewer topped the MX2 class ahead of Honda 114 Motorsport’s Hunter Lawrence and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass.

Also back in action in Germany this weekend is the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship along with the European Championship class of EMX125 presented by FMF Racing. 88 riders have entered into the 125cc racing including series points leader and winner in Latvia, KTM Junior’s Rene Hofer. The women will also host a full gate of riders including defending champion MXFONTARACING Yamaha’s Kiara Fontanesi and current points leader, Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings comes to Germany after winning the MXGP of Latvia only last Sunday in an impressive performance where he had to come back through the pack after 2 bad starts and pass his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Teammate Antonio Cairoli who led both races from the start.

Cairoli not only won here last year over Herlings but 4 other times in his career while Herlings has been atop the Teutschenthal podium twice in the MX2 category. However Herlings does have the momentum so far this season with the Latvian win being the 5th victory of the 7 races so far.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle has maintained his third place in the points standings with a 4th overall in Latvia just after his win in Russia. Desalle won the German GP at Teutschenthal in 2014, was 4th last year, and has reached the podium 3 other times.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre had a mixed weekend in Latvia when he battled with Cairoli for the lead in Race 1 eventually finishing 3rd but then crashed out of Race 2. Febvre, despite his injured right-arm will try to race this weekend and salvage points, the Frenchman did win the GP in 2015 and finished in the top 5 on 3 other occasions.

5th in the Championship at this point of the season is Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin. Paulin just scored his second podium of the year last weekend in Latvia and was also on the podium here last year. Paulin has never won the German GP but has come in 2nd twice, in both 2015 and 2011.

Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer is one rider to watch seeing the MXGP rookie topped the MX2 class here in 2017. Also not to forget is Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who crashed out here in spectacular fashion in 2017 while battling for the win, and TM Factory Racing’s Max Nagl as it will be his home GP.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 336 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 307 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 244 p.; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 223 p.; 5. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 218 p.; 6. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 180 p.; 7. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 179 p.; 8. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 177 p.; 9. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 155 p.; 10. Julien Lieber (BEL, KAW), 134 p.

2017 MXGP of Germany MXGP top 3:

1. Antonio Cairoli

2. Jeffrey Herlings

3. Gautier Paulin

In the MX2 class Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen comes to Germany with his first win of the season while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass leads the championship standings for the class. Jonass reached the podium in 2017 but finished outside the top 5 in his 3 other races here while Olsen was 5th last year.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado will be looking to redeem himself from an inconsistent performance after a bad start during Race 1 in Latvia. Prado has been the main challenger to the success of Jonass but finished 11th in 2017.

Honda 114 Motorsports Hunter Lawrence will also try to bounce back from a crash last week, especially since he was on the German podium last year. Lawrence just returned to MX2 action last weekend after being out with injury since practice in Trentino. The Aussie looked impressive and capable of a Latvian podium before his race one crash.

Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson has been the best of the Kemea riders overall this season but his teammate, and MX2 rookie, Jago Geerts was the most impressive in the sands of Kegums when he took 2nd overall, the podium from Geerts was the first of his career. Watson was also strong in Latvia with 5th overall. Also notable is that Anthony Rodriguez will join the Kemea team as a fill in for the injured Vsevolod Brylyakov.

Adding to the list of podium contenders is STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi. Jacobi has had some of the best rides of his career this season and had strong starts in Latvia last weekend even while feeling under the weather. For Jacobi this weekend is a home GP, born and raised in Germany the young Husqvarna rider will have plenty of support to push him toward the front of the pack.

Other riders to keep an eye on this weekend is F&H Racing Team’s Jed Beaton and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, both have had strong races this season and they currently are 5th and 6th in the championship’s standings.

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 304 points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, KTM), 282 p.; 3. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 266 p.; 4. Ben Watson (GBR, YAM), 210 p.; 5. Jed Beaton (AUS, KAW), 174 p.; 6. Calvin Vlaanderen (RSA, HON), 156 p.; 7. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 140 p.; 8. Henry Jacobi (GER, HUS), 128 p.; 9. Vsevolod Brylyakov (RUS, YAM), 127 p.; 10. Conrad Mewse (GBR, KTM), 126 p.

Rodriguez Joins Kemea Yamaha Official MX2

Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to announce that Anthony Rodriguez has been drafted in to temporarily replace the injured Vsevolod Brylyakov on the Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team until Brylyakov is ready to return.

After landing in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on Sunday 13th May, the 22-year-old - that originates from Venuzuela but has been based in the United States of America since 2009 - will race at the MX2 Grand Prix of Germany, round eight of the FIM Motocross World Championship, this weekend, May 20th.

Fresh off of the East Coast Supercross season, in which he finished ninth overall in the 250cc class with his best race finish being a fifth-place in Minneapolis, the MXGP of Germany will be the first time Rodriguez lines up for an outdoor motocross race this year.

Last year, he made his MX2 debut when he contested two rounds of the 2017 FIM MX2 World Championship - the MXGP of Lombardia, Italy and the MXGP of Portugal - where his best result was a solid eighth place finish at Portuguese Grand Prix in Agueda.

Anthony Rodriguez, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Rider: I can't tell you how excited I am to have the chance to race the MX2 World Championship with the Kemea Yamaha team. Every time I ride I give 100% so my goal is to keep doing that and keep getting better every day that I ride. I tested the bike today, and I have to say I like it a lot. I find that the Yamaha has a lot of torque and that really suits my style."

Erik Eggens, Yamaha Motor Europe MX Racing Manager: We need to make the best of the unfortunate situation of losing Vsevolod due to his knee injury, and we have decided that the best solution is to take on another high-level rider. It's exciting to give Anthony this opportunity. Yes, he has come from Supercross, which is different, but it is good that he has been racing and is fit to race. It will take some time to adapt to the MX2 class and the Motocross World Championship, but he already showed a lot of promise at the two rounds he did last year and I believe that with the support from Yamaha and the Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team, he will be able to do his best."
