Tim Gajser - Recovery

For 2015 and 2016 motocross world champion Tim Gajser the 2018 season has started with a big crash in a pre-season race  that left him with a badly damaged jaw and no chance of racing in the opening Grand Prix of the season in Patagonia - Argentina.

Still not race fit after spending a couple of weeks in recovery the HRC rider turned up in Holland for round two and attacked the Valkenswaard circuit like he had never been injured. Ninth overall and just 20 points though wasn’t how he wanted to leave the eurocircuit.

“Actually, I was a little bit disappointed because Saturday I had good speed and the qualification race went well, so I was expecting a bit more from Sunday. I had two good starts but made quite a few mistakes that cost me a lot of time but I’m happy that finished both races – and that I didn’t get hurt. We did some important laps, so I was just looking forward to Spain.”

With better weather and more time riding his bike the Slovenian went to Redsand in Spain and was quickly comfortable with the technical and rough circuit.

“I am so happy to get the qualification race win. It means a lot to me, because it was a really special day for my family, because it’s the 24th of March, and I dedicate this race to my brother. I hoped Sunday I could win, get a good start. The speed is there, and I just want to do a good race. I really like the track. It is really fast with good jumps. I like fast tracks with big jumps. The start was the key, I could do good laps’ times and I was riding clean. I was enjoying a lot on Saturday and I had hoped to do the same on Sunday.”

Sunday wasn’t as tough as Valkenswaard, but it still wasn’t what he had hoped for. Still a sixth overall and 28 points gives him some confidence going to round four in Italy, a circuit that he won his first ever Grand Prix.

“I would say today was not so bad. It has definitely been an improvement from Valkenswaard, the riding was better and so was the feeling, although obviously we’re still not where we’d like to be – but we take this sixth place. I want to thank the team because the bike was amazing, now it’s up to me to work hard to get back to the level I know I can ride at. I think together we can soon get some great results. Now I look forward to Pietramurata, where I’m sure there’ll be a lot of support from my home fans - who always get there in great numbers.”

So now onto Pietramurata, and another chapter in the former MXGP champions climb back to the top of the class.

These are the same ideals expressed by Tony Cairoli, who takes on the motocross world championship with great tenacity and courage, mirroring the brand's challenge attitude.

Tony Cairoli was spectacular on the special Spanish track, which is known for its distinctive red sand. It is a technical circuit that is well known to European riders, who often use it for pre-season training to refine their driving style on sand. The ability to cover any terrain is also due to the Fullback Cross and Ducato 4x4. The Fullback Cross is rugged, reliable and with impressive load capacity. It boasts a payload of more than a tonne and over three tonnes of towable weight. Furthermore, by implementing all-wheel drive and a 4WD electronic selector, it can easily tackle the roughest terrain in the toughest conditions, like when travelling off-road carrying a heavy load. Ducato 4x4 is an all-terrain, permanent four-wheel drive vehicle with two transfer cases and an automatically operated central viscous coupling. This device ensures the right drive torque split between the front and rear wheels, optimising traction on mud, snow and sand. Ducato 4x4 also offers all the features of solidity and performance needed to tackle off-road trails with particular outfits which exploit its entire payload.

REDSAND (Comunitat Valenciana, Spain), 25 March 2018 - First to race on the Redsand circuit this weekend was the 2 EMX classes of EMX250 and EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing. Perfect conditions with blue skies and sunshine set the scene for great European Championship racing. Bud Racing Monster Energy’s Pierre Goupillon and GL12 Racing’s Mike Kras took both not only the overall wins in their respective classes but also the championship leader’s red plate.

In the opening European 250 four-stroke race of the year ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha’s Nicholas Lapucci lead Anthony Bourdon on the first lap. Bourdon found his way into the lead 2 laps before Team DIGA Racing Procross’ Dylan Walsh took it away. The lead didn’t last for Walsh with as REVO Husqvarna UK’s Mel Pocock passed him on lap 7. Tom Vialle from France then got around Walsh on lap 9 of 14.

Follow the moves of Vialle by passing Walsh was another Frenchman, BUD Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Pierre Goupillon along with Carglass Honda Racing’s Steven Clarke. The competitive 3 way battle for the lead was only separated by 3 seconds at the finish where Pocock took the race win ahead of Vialle and Goupillon.

Race 2’s start was a much needed improvement for Goupillon after coming through the pack from 16th to finish 3rd in race 1. Goupillon led 11 laps from the start of the race, first ahead of Nichlas Bjerregaard and later REVO Husqvarna UK’s Martin Barr.

KTM Silver Action’s Gianluca Facchetti was 3rd for 5 laps before crashing out of the race and having a scoreless weekend. Giuseppe Tropepe had an impressive ride coming for 8th to finish 3rd.

With three laps to go Martin Barr took the lead from Poupillon and won by 3.8 seconds making it two race wins of 2 for the REVO Husqvarna UK Team. In the overall standings Pierre Goupillon took the win with 42 points ahead of Tom Vialle’s 40 points and Mel Pocock with 37.

Cairoli and Jonass Race to Redsand Victories

REDSAND (Comunitat Valenciana, Spain), 25 March 2018 - The 2018 MXGP of La Comunitat Valenciana is one for the record books at the Redsand circuit in Spain’s Valencia region. Hosting its first ever MXGP event the vibrant soil of Redsand gave MXGP fans another weekend of epic racing!

Winning his first MXGP overall and red plate of the 2018 season was the veteran and defending FIM Motocross World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. In the MX2 class it was another perfect weekend for the defending MX2 FIM Motocross World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass.

At the drop of the gate for MXGP’s Race 1 the thousands of fans in attendance were on their feet from the grand stands. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre ignited the Fox Holeshot flames as he charged through the first corner.

Just behind the former MXGP Champion from France was Italy’s Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle followed Team HRC’s Tim Gajser on the first lap but on lap 2 Desalle took third away.

However it wasn’t just Desalle taking advantage as Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings also took positions from the Slovenian on lap 2.

For seven laps Febvre led the field of MXGP riders until Cairoli finally made a move for the lead. Meanwhile Jeffrey Herlings had found his way into 4th past Seewer and only 1 lap after Cairoli took the lead, Herlings took 3rd from Desalle.

The second half of the race Herlings was in full attack mode even gaining 2 seconds on both Cairoli and Febvre in a single lap. It wasn’t until lap 14 of 18 that Herlings found a way past Febvre. Taking the win was Cairoli as Herlings finished 4.6 seconds later followed by Febvre and Desalle.

A few positions back Gajser passed Seewer along with Lieber in what was a 3 way battle for 5th. At the finish Lieber took the final spot in the top five while Seewer finished 6th and Gajser 8th, who crashed on the final lap, split by Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin.

Race 2 started with a FOX Holeshot from Cairoli but Paulin took the lead from the race 1 winner before the end of the first official lap. Desalle was off to another good start in 3rd along with Gajser in 4th.

The #84 of Herlings was left picking up his bike after falling on the opening lap. At the conclusion of the first complete lap Herlings was in 9th position behind Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Jose Butron. By lap 4 Herlings made his way past Butron, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek, his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Teammate Glenn Coldenhoff, and Tim Gajser.

One lap later Cairoli reclaimed the lead from Paulin while Desalle and Febvre had a massive bar banging battle for 3rd. Febvre at one point made a pass on Desalle but an immediate retaliation from the Belgian pushed Febvre into the grasp of Herlings.

Herlings passed Febvre on lap 7 and Desalle on the following, five laps later Paulin was also moved back by the “Bullet”. In the final 6 laps Herlings tried to close on Cairoli but just as in race 1 it was too little too late. Cairoli took the win 1.8 second ahead of Herlings while Paulin was another 21.6 second behind in third.

The overall win clearly went to Cairoli with his 1-1 finishes ahead of Herlings 2-2 and Desalle’s 4-4. Cairoli assumes the red plate from Herlings, though both are tied in race wins and points Cairoli has an upper hand with the most recent race win to his name.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli: “I am really happy about the weekend, we are still searching for the best bike set up but we are going the right way and we made some good changes. Everything went well here in Spain, it is my 84th GP win so it is very nice and the season is going really good and I am happy to fight with Jeffrey.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings: “At this track I definitely wanted to win but both starts I messed up. Hopefully we can improve and start with the guy next to me instead of trying to fight my way through the pack first before I get there, so I think once the starts are better we will be in a lot better position.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle: “We had a bad start yesterday and today we changed the strategy which helped me a lot because if you don’t have a good start most of the tracks are really difficult to make a good result because the class is really competitive, the top 8 or 10 guys are at a really high level. I feel positive for the beginning of the season.”

While the MXGP class is full of biggest stars in World Motocross the local fans were cheering the loudest during the MX2 class. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Pauls Jonass was the winner but his young teammate from Spain, Jorge Prado, was the focus of the fans.

Race 1 started with a FOX Holeshot from STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi who barely surpassed Hitachi KTM UK’s Conrad Mewse to the chalk. Right behind the pair was Jonass who quickly took over the lead.

Prado had a good start as well in 4th after the first lap just ahead of Honda 114 Motorsport’s Hunter Lawrence. TM Factory Racing’s Samuele Bernardini passed Lawrence for 5th on lap 2 and 2 laps later both himself and Lawrence overtook Jacobi. Lawrence also moved into 4th ahead of Bernardini in the process. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was next to take a spot from the TM rider and five laps later Olsen would do the same to Lawrence.

With Olsen pressuring Prado both the Spaniard and Dane found the speed to pass Mewse for second only two laps before the finish. At the line Jonass won with Prado, Olsen, Mewse, and Lawrence rounding out the top 5.

Race 2 started with a Fox Holeshot from the local superstar but again Jonass took the lead nearly instantly. Olsen had a much improved start for race 2 and also passed Prado before the first lap was complete.

Bike IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei was fast all weekend and after coming from 13th to finish 6th in race 1 the American started race 2 in 4th after lap 1 with Lawrence behind him.

In the 8 laps of race 2 the top seven remained the same but on lap 9 a mistake from Olsen and pass from Sanayei on Prado put Sanayei second and Olsen 5th with Prado and Lawrence between them.

After 3 more laps Olsen had refocused and passed Lawrence for 4th. In the remaining 7 laps again no position changes occurred in the top 6 but Sanayei made several attempts at the lead.

At the finish Jonass won his 6th race of 6 this year for his 3rd overall victory, with Sanayei, Prado, Olsen, and Lawrence finishing the top 5. In the overall standings Jonass scored the perfect 50 points ahead of Prado with 42 and Olsen with 38 for his 3rd podium of 2018.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Pauls Jonass: “It is nice to start the season with 6 wins out of 6 races but it isn’t easy. I just tried not to make any big mistakes and stay calm to control the race. Overall I’m really happy with how things are going and really looking forward to the next few races.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Jorge Prado: “It was a good weekend, I’m really happy with second, first race was really good, in the second I struggled a bit with the speed but we worked hard so I’m happy with my second place.”

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen: “It feels really good being up here for the third time in a row and for sure if you told me at the beginning of the season that I was going to be on the podium 3 races out of 3 I would take it so I’m really happy.”
