MXGP Revs Up for the 2018 Season in Patagonia

NEUQUEN (Patagonia Argentina), 02 March 2018 – The 2018 MXGP season has completed its first pair of events in the beautiful Patagonia Argentina. Taking place early Friday afternoon was the opening press conference for the new season. This press conference gave important info to both national and international media, a handful of riders, as well as several teams.

Youthstream proudly shared interesting and impressive statistics from the 2017 season which showed the growth that the world championship has achieved. Digital media was highlighted as an important tool for its role in the MXGP championship’s continued growth and success along with the expanded television coverage for the upcoming season.

Taking the stage was Youthstream Vice President, Mr. David Luongo who was joined by FIM/CMS Director, Mr. Tony Skillington, Local Organizer, Mr. David Eli, and Major of Villa La Angostura, Mr. Gullermo Caruso alongside some of the biggest names for this year’s racing season: Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin, TM Racing’s Max Nagl, and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen.

Mr. David Luongo: “First, I wish all a warm welcome to Argentina and to the new season. We are very happy to be here in the hot and beautiful landscape of Argentina and it is always a great pleasure to be at this race because the organization is state of the art and I want to thank David Eli for the work he does here because this is one of the best races of the season globally and for sure one of the best oversea events we ever have in the history of motocross. The series is really global today with 19 races plus the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, we touch many continents and we are in the best markets in Europe. We don’t have big novelties this year, it is really to deliver the best service possible, to continue to improve the tracks, to improve the preparation, and to improve the security. I wish good luck to all the riders here, we have now, without any doubt, the premier off road series in the world, you are all so talented and for sure you will deliver a great show this weekend.”

Mr. Tony Skillington: “First of all I would like to acknowledge the great work and collaboration that has taken place between Youthstream, over many years, and the FIM. Indeed the FIM’s relationship with our promoter, in this case Youthstream, I would describe as being the strongest and best collaboration that exist within the FIM. I would like to wish all the riders who have made this their profession a very good weekend and a very good season.”

Mr. David Eli: “We are very glad to be here in a new year and we hope that you all enjoy not only being here in this place but also all that Villa La Angostura has to offer. I want to thank Youthstream especially because they have trusted us again and given us the first round of the new championship. For those who are here for the first time I wish you enjoy the competition and the landscape.”

Mr. Gullermo Caruso: “Villa La Angostura has a great passion for this sport, all the people here receive everyone with warmth and they love this sport already in its fourth edition here. Every year we are very anxious and we expect you to come here but at the same time we make great efforts to generate the best conditions to receive you here.”

The riders then finished out the press conference talking about their winter training and expectations for the 2018 season with these statements:

Antonio Cairoli: “I want to congratulate Youthstream who have developed such a great package for people to see and follow us, I am really happy about this. Being here in Argentina for me is unbelievable, I really have a lot of fans in South America, and for me as the first race of the season this weather is perfect.”

Jeffrey Herlings: “Last year we had some issues coming into the season with the hand and now I am feeling much better. I had some good preparation races, I’m feeling strong and good with team, Red Bull KTM have done an awesome job, so I’m so happy on the bike and with the crew I’m working with. We should not forget to mention Youthstream and the FIM for the great job they do for us with the coverage and thanks to those guys we can do what we love to do each and every day. We have high expectations for this season, we definitely want to do our best, but that is all we can do. It is going to be a 19 round series. I’m just going to do my best every weekend to go out and we will see who come out on top at the end of the year.”

Romain Febvre: “I am happy to be here and happy to start the new season here, I really like the track and the past years I really enjoyed both the place and the track. I’m really happy to start the season healthy and with good ambition.”

Clement Desalle: “I start this season with the same goal, to do the best possible every weekend and get the best result. We did a great job with team during the winter, we worked really hard on both myself and the bike. We have a good set up and happy to be here and to start to race.”

Gautier Paulin: “It feels good to start the season finally. We got out of the winter healthy and I’m really happy with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing for their work over the winter. We got a new bike and the bike is working awesome, we have spent a lot of hours testing and making it good. I am happy to start the season here in Argentina as the track looks really good. Anyhow I’m feeling good, healthy, and we will make the best of each weekend but I’m really happy to be behind the gate.”

Max Nagl: “I have great memories on this track coming from 2015, it is a really nice place. All the rider or I think that for a lot of riders this is their favorite track, it is really wide and it fast, the ground is great even as we expect some rain for Sunday it won’t be an issue.”

Calvin Vlaanderen: “I am obviously looking forward to the first gate drop this weekend, it has been a good off season. Working with the new team, Factory Honda, it’s been good so far, I am really feeling well with the bike and with the team, it feels like family already. Hopefully it is going to be a good weekend, I’m going to do my best and it is important to stay smart, it’s a long season and I will hopefully be there every weekend to reach the top at the end.”

Later Friday afternoon another event was held in the neighboring city center of Villa La Angostura where the riders were introduced to fans following live music on stage.

Directly after the presentation an autograph session took place with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, Jeffrey Herlings, Jorge Prado, Pauls Jonass, and Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Kawasaki Factory Racing’s Clement Desalle and Julien Lieber, Bike IT DRT Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle and Darian Sanayei, Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie, Thomas Kjer Olsen and Thomas Covington, Wilvo Yamaha MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer and Shaun Simpson, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Vsevolod Brylyakov, Ben Watson, and Jago Geerts, TM Racing’s Max Nagl and Samuele Bernardini, I Fly JK Racing’s Ivo Monticelli, and F&H Racing’s Adam Sterry and Jed Beaton, Team Martin Racing Honda’s Michele Cervellin alongside the many enthusiastic and loving Argentinian fans.

MX2 in Argentina

While a lot of talk has been about the MXGP class coming into the opening round of the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship, the MX2 class is also looking like it will produce some very interesting races.

Of course, defending champion Pauls Jonass is the favorite for the series, but after a handful of races in the pre-season, it is young Aussie, Hunter Lawrence who has taken the points when the two have met in 2018.

Pre-season will mean nothing when the two collide this coming weekend, but you can be sure, and while it is just the start of a 19-round series, bragging rights are important, and a victory is going to give a lot of confidence into round two in Valkenswaard.

While Jonass is aware of the speed of the Australian rider, he also knows that in a full series consistency is the key. It was his consistent approach in 2017 that won him his first world championship and once again he will try and finish top three as often as possible.

“I was not surprised at all (by Lawrence’s speed),” Jonass said. “I have seen him ride before and I knew he would be good, so it wasn’t a surprise. I saw him at the MXoN, and also in the winter in Spain, so I knew he would be good. I was at the MXoN, and I watched the race. He was riding very good and I know Hunter is good in those conditions, when it is muddy and deep ruts, he is good on tracks like that. It was nice to see him ride there. The most important thing for 2018 will be like last year, be consistent and not make any big mistakes. Last year one guy could win a race then get 14th in the second race, so it is all about being consistent.”

As for the respect Lawrence has for the Red Bull KTM Factory rider, he also knows that anyone is beatable, and like the Latvian, knows that throwing it all away in Argentina won’t win him a championship in September.

“I am looking forward to the season,” Lawrence said. “The pre-season doesn’t mean much, and a lot can change when we get to round one, but it gives us good direction and something to work on, and I am going to just keep my head screwed on for the rest of the series. We are comfortable. This bike is already so good, and we are excited how we can do some testing and further it, you know. It has such potential, and Honda has made a great bike and I am excited to go racing.”

But of course, it won’t just be Jonass and Lawrence who will be fighting for the MX2 overall in Argentina, with names like Thomas Covington, Thomas Olsen, Jorge Prado and many more looking to take the victory and more back to Europe with the red plate.

MXGP Set to Start in Patagonia

NEUQUEN (Patagonia Argentina), 1 March 2018 – The 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship season is upon us and set to start at the beloved circuit of Patagonia-Argentina this weekend. Villa La Angostura, Neuquen Province will once again host the MXGP series but for the first time ever the picturesque region with crystal clear lakes and towering mountain peaks will open the season. It will be the first time this year that the riders of the MXGP and MX2 World Championships are to battle against one another.

The rich volcanic soil of the Argentinian track will develop well throughout the weekend and will undoubtably get rough and technical challenging the world’s best riders and their off season preparation.

In 2015 when MXGP first raced on the Neuquen track it was Max Nagl on the top step of the podium.  The German has now changed to the TM Racing Racing Factory team for the new season. The past 2 years the win has however been taken by the Slovenian Team HRC rider and 2016 MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser. With the defending winner not in attendance due to a pre-season injury many other title contenders will be looking to add their name to the list of winners on Argentinian soil.

This year, once again, it’s anyone guess who could win, though of the many returning to compete in 2018 one might say that Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli or Jeffrey Herlings are the most likely to succeed, but it doesn’t end there.

Antonio Cairoli has also had a very strong off season and is looking fit and well prepared for 2018 and of course is one of the best the sport has ever seen with 9 world championships to his name, only 1 behind all time leader Stefan Everts, including his resurgence in 2017 after the two injury laden seasons prior. And yes, Jeffrey Herlings proved to be the man to beat once healthy in 2017 but both are just two of the many former champions present in the premier class.

Romain Febvre, the 2015 MXGP World Champion will be aboard an all new YZ450F, comes off his 2017 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations victory, and is hungry for wins after a disappointing 2017 season. Once again joining on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing machine is Jeremy Van Horebeek who placed 2nd overall in the 2017 visit in Argentina.

Then you also must look at Febvre’s MXoN French teammate, the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing MXGP rider Gautier Paulin. Paulin showed not only that he is fast and consistent by finishing the 2017 MXGP season 3rd in the points but that he is fast enough to win after taking the 2017 MXGP of Europe overall. Both Paulin and Febvre are very capable of crashing the Herlings and Cairoli party many expect this year.

The #99 of Max Anstie who will again be riding for the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing squad ended his 2017 on a high not with MXoN success and will look to keep that momentum going.

Another name that has found his way to Argentina is the BOS GP hosted Evgeny Bobryshev. Bobryshev saw success here last year when he reached the podium even while feeling under the weather.

If you consider all of those who have won a GP at one point or another then you are considering the near majority of the starting grid! The level of competition heading into the 2018 MXGP season is at an all time high full of veterans and young stars all fighting for the top spot.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team will come into Argentina a mix of new with old as MXGP rookie Julien Lieber joins the factory effort alongside the strong Belgian, Clement Desalle.

The same can also be said for the Wilvo Yamaha MXGP team who will have both the 2017 MX2 title contender, Jeremy Seewer, and returning MXGP veteran Shaun Simpson riding the new Yamaha 450. The Wilvo team is set to host three riders in 2018 but will miss Arnaud Tonus at the season start as he bounces back from an off season shoulder injury.

2017 MXGP of Patagonia Argentina MXGP Top 3:

  1. Tim Gajser
  2. Jeremy Van Horebeek
  3. Evgeny Bobryshev

While the MXGP class is full of proven results the MX2 class is full of young talent. At the top of the list is without doubt the 2017 MX2 World Champion Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass but with his main challenger from 2017, Jeremy Seewer, moving to the 450 ranks with his newfound Wilvo Yamaha team, the question now is who might challenge the reigning champ?

In reality you don’t have to look far, as a matter of fact his young Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate, Jorge Prado, is a likely GP winner especially after claiming his fair share of victories in 2017. Prado is the epitome of both youth and talent claiming his first win at the young age of 16. Jonass and Prado faced off here in 2017 and though the racing was clean Prado was never fazed or intimidated by Jonass.

Thomas Kjer Olsen was also a rookie in 2017 but even so he was able to claim a victory as early as the MXGP of Latvia. Now with a year of experience under his belt the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider is on the short list of possible title contenders for the podium or even a win this weekend.

Olsen's teammate, the American, Thomas Covington is another name to toss in the mix after winning races each of the last two seasons. Covington showed some impeccable speed in 2017 but struggled to have 2 consistent races in the same sitting.

The 2018 Team HRC MX2 recruit, Calvin Vlaanderen has been impressive in the off season on his new Honda and is surely confident in his pace to start the season.

All new in 2018 is the Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team, the three-rider squad has no returning rider but is full of talent. Ben Watson will be riding a Yamaha for the first time in his career alongside Vsevolod Brylakov, who returns from injury, and former EMX125 and Junior World Champion now MX2 rookie Jago Geerts.

The charismatic Australian, Hunter Lawrence, he has found a new home riding a Honda for the new Livia Lancelot managed Team 114 alongside Bas Vaessen. The Aussie showed amazing speed at the end of 2017 where he was even against top 450 riders on his underpowered 250 at Matterley Basin during the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations presented by Fiat Professional.

2017 MXGP of Patagonia Argentina MX2 Top 3:

  1. Pauls Jonass
  2. Jorge Prado
  3. Jeremy Seewer

Both classes are full of new faces and teams from former EMX riders moving into MX2 to MX2 veterans trying their hand at MXGP. All of the factors considered will make the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship season and the MXGP of Patagonia Argentina in particular unpredictable and exhilarating. Make sure not to miss any of the racing action by watching LIVE from Patagonia Argentina Saturday & Sunday. Every race including qualifying will be available LIVE and OnDemand on www.mxgp-tv.com.
