Roger Magee – KTM Youth Program

Veteran team manager, Roger Magee of the KTM UK effort, is excited for the 2018 season as he brings him his countryman, Graeme Irwin into his team. Irwin showed good form at last month’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Presented by Fiat Professional, with a top ten finish in his qualification race and was crowned British MXGP champion this year.

“We will have 2017 British champion Graeme Irwin racing in the MXGP class on GP level and he will obviously try and retain his MX1 British championship,” Magee said. “Graeme rode for us in 2010 and 2011. He was young and inexperienced, and he moved onto some other teams. We feel he has improved a lot and matured a lot. The previous teams he rode for didn’t do GP and he deserved that opportunity. He is also from my country, so that is a bonus for the team. He can also pull in some Northern Ireland sponsors and also retain the British championship and top ten in MXGP. That will be difficult at first, but I think he showed at the Motocross of Nations, that he can compete with those guys. We will try and nurture him and give him some good advice, keep him calm for the first half of the season.

Magee has also been given extra support from KTM for next year, and having put a big effort into his team for a decade now, the Northern Irishman can’t wait to once again be involved with young talent.

“We will be the main KTM satellite team, with the view to bring on some of the young riders. The first MX2 rider is Conrad Mewse and he has tested the new 2018 bikes and I was told he was really on it. We have had a reputation of bringing riders through and the next thing they move to the factory teams. We will try that with him, no pressure, the right encouragement and the right tools to do the job, with that the results should come. We have a list of other MXGP and MX2 riders and mechanics who want to come to work with us. It’s a team’s market at the moment. KTM want us to bring on the younger riders and that is what we will do.”

No doubt with Irwin and Mewse racing in the KTM UK colours, there could be a surprise or two in both MXGP and MX2, as both are young talents, who will be desperate to show the older more experienced riders that they can run with anyone on their day.
