Back to Argentina

When the news broke that Neuquén in Argentina was going to open the 2018 MXGP season, riders, mechanics the media and a lot of fans were excited. The MXGP of Patagonia – Argentina has been one of the highlights for the series, and we decided to ask some riders their experiences of the event.

Defending World MXGP champion Antonio Cairoli loved the circuit on his first visit in 2016. He enjoyed the layout, and the atmosphere with the large crowd and fast action.

“The track is beautiful,” Cairoli said. “It is very fun to ride, and there are several points where you can try overtaking, without taking big risks. There are many lines and that’s good for the sport, so the spectators from home can see some good races; this is a safe and spectacular track. The weekend (last year) was very difficult mainly because of the starts and also the riders were very close together on this track, and you could not make the difference; you had to take some risks to pass the others.”

Former MX2 and MXGP champion Tim Gajser loved it last year, and took victory at the circuit. Always performing well on circuits like in Argentina.

“I really enjoy the track,” Gajser said. “I know I was riding well (last year). The crowds here were good and it was nice to hear them cheering when I came past them on the last lap. They had made a few changes to the track last year which suited me.”

GP veteran and multiple GP winner Shaun Simpson always has difficulties working out what set-up to have, as the dirt changes each year. He does love the country of Argentina and looks forward to going back.

“Argentina,” Simpson said. “It is always one of those where you are never sure what type of tire to put on. It is just a soil that nobody is used to riding on, which creates a bit of uncertainty. It is probably the most unpredictable start to a season we have had in a while for set-up. You can go there and think you have a good set-up and still be searching for a good set-up in the first couple of sessions. It is one I will be looking forward to. It is always well organized, and everybody loves going there. It also has a good atmosphere.”

Of course, come March 4, when the best motocross riders in the world attempt to start their season with as many points as possible, the world will be watching. Of course, it might be names like Cairoli, Gajser and Simpson who will be in the points, but in a series as tough as the MXGP series, anything is possible.

Avrie Berry and Yente Dourte join KTM Diga Junior Racing

For the 2018 season, KTM Diga Junior Racing will shift into higher gear again. The rider-line-up of Miro Sihvonen, Emil Weckman and Tomas Kohut will be expanded with the young American WMX rider Avrie Berry. Secondly, physical coach Yente Dourte will come on board providing the team and riders with fresh insights.

Seventeen-year old Avrie Berry from Washougal Washington made a name for herself back home at Loretta’s this year. She podiumed for the first time in her amateur class and immediately recorded third and fourth finishes in her pro debut. Making the transition into the strongest women’s competition in the world, the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship, Berry made two wildcard appearances in Europe. As one of the youngest competitors in the field Avrie demonstrated her potential and finished a commendable 11th in the second race at Villars-sous-Ecot, France.

The introduction to racing at the highest level left Berry wanting for more. In order to further develop her motocross career Avrie has chosen KTM Diga Junior Racing and will be living and training in Belgium. In Europe she will be combining the Women’s Motocross European and World Championships.

The name of Belgian native Yente Dourte might ring a bell with insiders as he’s a journalist and test rider for MXMag. In addition to being a solid amateur rider, he is also a qualified exercise expert. After his studies at the “Hogeschool West-Vlaanderen”, he went to the Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven as a Sports Performance student.

Yente Dourte: "To further improve myself in coaching elite athletes, I moved to the Fontys University of Applied Science in the Netherlands. Being an avid motocross rider I was looking for an internship at high level. I was happy when Dirk (Saelen) confirmed met that KTM Diga Junior Racing wanted to include me in their team. For me that was a dream that came true because I could not imagine a better place to translate the theory and knowledge that I already gained in the sport! I actually started my studies with the aim of adding a scientific approach to motocross training. So I’m really grateful to Dirk (Saelen) and KTM Diga Junior Racing for giving me this unique opportunity to share new insights about training and physical preparation with them. It says a lot about the open mind of the team too. I hope that my work will pay off during the season and I am sure that this is the beginning of a fruitful learning collaboration. "

Dirk Saelen, team manager KTM Diga Junior Racing: "Helping young people in a high value-added manner in their search for a professional motocross career is the main goal of KTM Diga Junior Racing. Internally we always call it a project! Because the mindset to learn and improve does not only apply to our riders but it goes just as much for the support staff and technicians. Our guidance is future-oriented, which is why we have a healthy interest in new methods and developments. That was the premise for us to enter this partnership with Yente. We are convinced that this is a positive and substantial step forward for all parties involved."

'SHIPWRECKED': FEBVRE, THE ISLAND & A SPECIAL MOTOCROSS FILM

The small beach and looming white cliff faces drew closer, much faster than the captain would have liked. The freightliner, MV Panagiotis, was rocking and yawing: sandwiched between swells and waves that swirled up and clapped each side of the ship on a bleak evening in October 1980. The crew had battened every hatch but they were on a journey in which they had no control. They drifted, and then the hull suddenly gripped with a jarring finality.

Thirty-seven years ago the last voyage of the MV Panagiotis – a boat shrouded in tales and legend of smuggling deeds and defiance – would end up creating one of the world’s most picturesque ‘wrecks’. ‘Navagio’ [meaning Shipwreck] beach can only be accessed by water and the powerful mix of beauty and decay in the shadow of motorised technology inspired a production crew to pursue exclusive use of the location. The idea was to have 2015 MXGP FIM Motocross World Champion and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Romain Febvre ripping up sand around the Panagiotis.

A team of 23 people began to construct a site and a ‘track’ at Navagio by transporting all the equipment necessary from the other side of the island. The build was sizeable and involved shifting twelve tonnes of sand and clocked over a thousand hours of labour. And then with 25 year old Febvre onboard and the filming date in November pencilled, it was almost as if the energy that snared the Panagiotis reared up to again make its mark.

Less than a week before ‘record’ buttons were to be pushed the weather changed. A storm gathered over Zakynthos and in a single day the Navagio ‘set’ was totalled. A period of rapid and stressful recovery work began: some 60% of what had already been crafted on the beach had to be re-done in one day.

Another hurdle fast presented itself. Direct sunlight on Navagio in November was sparse and the shoot expanded into nocturnal activity in order to augment their material. Hauling the lights, equipment and technical backup was another major ‘ask’.

At the heart of the project was Febvre, fresh from a nineteen-round Grand Prix season and a milestone third consecutive success at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. “It is definitely the strangest place I have ridden,” the talented Frenchman admitted. “We are used to circuits and beautiful locations and in countries like Argentina but this was right on the beach with the sea so close and that ship stuck right there. It was unbelievable to see, and more so to ride because it is a place you cannot reach by walking or car but by wheeling the bike onto a boat and sailing out.”

The Grand Prix winner has done a number of film and photoshoots in his career but welcomed the chance to put that distinctive blue #461 into a frame that is definitely a ‘first’ for dirt biking. “Being a factory rider is already like a dream for me, so opportunities like this are just a cool part of it,” he says. “Having a sponsor like Monster, who come up with some crazy ideas, is also another nice part…but I like it. I think there are not many people that do stuff like this.”

Most nights Navagio echoes gently to the surf and the occasional metallic ‘moan’ or creak from the Panagiotis. Febvre bounced four-stroke engine howls around the stony walls in a sight unlikely to be seen again. The video and photography effectively chart the experience for a true ‘one-off’.
