Michele Cervellin: Coming Home

Italian rider Michele Cervellin of the HRC Factory MX2 team looked strong in the pre-season and many expected him to be fighting for podiums in 2017. While he hasn’t reached those heights just yet, he does hold down seventh place in the MX2 points standings, and he goes into this weekend’s Grand Prix of Trentino with a large Italian fan base behind him.

“I am looking forward to heading back into Europe this weekend,” Cervellin said. “The track I know well and it is really close to my home so it is a local one for me. I raced in Europe last year so I feel more comfortable coming back to tracks that I know which means I will hopefully do better for myself and the team. The first few rounds I have learnt a lot which I can put into my racing in Europe.

In the last four MX2 moto, he has gone 9-11-9-11, consistent but not something to get too excited about. Mind you in a very competitive MX2 championship it is more than solid.

A couple of weeks ago in Mexico the Honda rider picked up a top ten overall, but is still looking to climb the series points with some solid top five performances.

“Sunday was ok for me. In the first moto, I didn’t have a bad race as I finished ninth but in the second I finished eleventh. Eleventh wasn’t so bad for me in the championship as the points help but it isn’t really where I want to finish. For me the start is still a challenge but I improved on this in both the races. Overall I have had good points for the championship but I was looking forward to racing back in Europe.”

Argentina was a similar story, consistent results, but still Cervellin knows that he is capable of more.

“The weekend in wasn’t so bad but I know I can do better. In the first moto, I had a good start and I lost some positions which ended up ninth which I am not really that happy about and then in the second Moto I finished eleventh which again is not something I am really that happy about. In the last part of both the moto’s I know I was riding good but I need to do some more work on how I ride in the first half with more speed.”

Now onto the home Grand Prix, at the hard pack circuit of Trentino. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the local rider put together two top five results.

MAX ANSTIE TO MISS MXGP OF TRENTINO

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie will not compete in this weekend’s MXGP of Trentino, Italy – round five of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship after an ingiury to his left knee picked up last weekend.

In his debut season of MXGP class competition, the FC 450 mounted rider has so far enjoyed three top 10 results with his highlight being a seventh-place moto result at the MXGP of Patagonia, Argentina. Currently sitting 11th in the MXGP championship standings the young Brit is expected to return to competition at the MXGP of Europe in Valkenswaard, on April 22/23.

The fifth round of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship will take place in Pietramurata, Italy on April 15/16.

Antti Pyrhönen, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager: “It’s always disappointing when a rider is unable to compete due to injury, but that’s a part of our sport. Max has enjoyed a good start to the season, and has been steadily improving his speed and consistency. We’re thankful his injury isn’t a serious one, with a little time to recover he will soon be back to full fitness.”

Desprey deputises at KRT

It’s never easy to find a rider available for a ride during the season, but the Team Green family combined their resources in the past few weeks and are pleased to announce that Frenchman Maxime Desprey will deputise for Jordi Tixier for the upcoming two rounds of the MXGP. Twenty-four years old and native from Burgundy, Maxime has already a long relationship with Kawasaki as he fought for the European title on a KX250 in 2012 and enters his third season as member of team Monster Energy Bud Racing Kawasaki. Several times French Champion and currently fifth in the French Elite MX1 after three rounds, only five points from the second position, Max has a double program this season; he races for Monster Bud Racing Kawasaki in France and for Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki in the European rounds of the FIM World Championship. So Max will switch on the KX450F-SR in Arco di Trento and Valkenswaard, while Steven Lenoir racing in UK with HR Kawasaki will ride for Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki in Valkenswaard.

Maxime Desprey said: "First of all I’d like to thank Kawasaki and Monster Energy KRT to give me this great opportunity, but also Bud Racing and team Gebben Racing who understood that it was a great chance for me to show what I can do. Of course I’m very happy with this opportunity, I have already tested the bike and I can’t wait to be in Arco di Trento this weekend.”

Francois Lemariey said:  "KRT has a strong competitive ethic and we searched hard for a rider to deputise for Jordi Tixier. We are working with Jordi on his comeback plan, while giving Maxime a chance to shine in MXGP with our full support. We all want to see our two bikes behind the gate; Maxime has a strong experience of GP racing and he’s used to race the 450 Kawasaki, so he was the best possible choice.”

Steve Guttridge stated: "Kawasaki and Team Green are a platform for aspiring young riders, and we are now about to see Maxime step up to KRT MXGP premier class to deputise for Jordi, while our satellite teams have worked with us to enable young Kawasaki riders to reach their dreams of a GP ride. I’d like to extend a special thanks to our team owners, Stephane Dasse of Monster Energy Bud Racing Kawasaki, Emile Gebben and Van Venrooy of Gebben Kawasaki, Paul Hobbs of HR Kawasaki and, of course, Francois Lemariey of KRT who worked tirelessly to create this arrangement.

Monster Energy MXGP of USA Venue Announcement

(PIETRAMURATA) Trentino, Italy, 13 April 2017 - Youthstream and MX Sports Pro Racing are very proud to announce that the Monster Energy MXGP of USA scheduled on September, the 3rd will be held at Gatorback Cycle Park in Gainesville, Florida.

Gatorback Cycle Park has already hosted professional motocross racing in the past as a stop on the AMA Pro Motocross schedule from 1983 to 1997. Throughout those years Gatorback saw some very historic moments, including 1989, when two-time FIM Motocross World Champion Jean-Michel Bayle won his first race in US in dramatic fashion. That win was a sign of things to come as he would later claim both the AMA Motocross and Supercross Championships.

In 1993 Jeremy McGrath won his first national at Gatorback, topping the 125cc Class, while in the middle of his march to the first of his many AMA Supercross Championships.

Another remarkable moment was when Florida’s own Ricky Carmichael won his first of what would grow to an all-time record 102 AMA Motocross Nationals here in 1997. Like most aspiring young motocross riders in the U.S, Carmichael visited Gatorback Cycle Park often for the annual THOR Winter Olympics, one of the biggest and longest running motocross amateur events in the world.

Now, 20 years later, Gatorback Cycle Park is set to make history once again being the 17th stop of 2017 FIM World Motocross Championship. Both Youthstream and Gatorback Cycle Park are excited for the spectacular racing this event and venue will provide and look forward to the Monster Energy MXGP of USA on September 3rd, 2017.

David Luongo, Youthstream Vice-President and Head of Operations, stated: “We are very excited to come back in the United States of America for the Monster Energy MXGP of USA. Gatorback is one of the most historical track out there, the venue is beautiful and the MXGP fans in America will have the opportunity to watch the best Motocross Riders in the World to race on a classic US Track which will be very exciting for everybody. I really want to thank MX Sports and the AMA that helped a lot to make this event to happen and also Mr. Kern, the owner of Gatorback facility, to take this opportunity to bring back the MXGP World Championship in USA.”

Wyn Kern, Unlimited Sports MX, stated: "We are excited that Youthstream and MX Sports are working together to bring the Monster Energy MXGP of the USA to Gatorback Cycle Park this fall. We are going to give motocross fans the rare opportunity to see the best racers from AMA Pro Motocross line up against the best riders from the FIM’s MXGP World Championships, on a classic American motocross track.  Add the fact that Unlimited Sports MX will host national-caliber amateur racing on this same Labor Day Weekend and Gatorback Cycle Park is going to be the capitol of the entire motocross world come the first of September."

Davey Coombs, President of MX Sports Pro Racing, stated: “This is very exciting for American motocross, and also for MX Sports, finally having a chance to work with Youthstream to build a successful new race together here in the U.S.  Our fans, not to mention most of the top riders, have long been familiar with what a great motocross track Wyn Kern and the Unlimited Sports MX crew has at Gatorback Cycle Park, so there is a lot of buzz already building about bringing the best professional motocross riders in the world here once again for a new MXGP in the USA.”

Ready to go to Trentino

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino), 13 April 2017 - The 5th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship and the first race in Europe is ready to start this weekend in Italy at the MXGP of Trentino where Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer are back on European soil with the Red Plate.

The first round at this spectacular hard pack track at Pietramurata was back in 1987.

With it being the first race in Europe Trentino will host the first round of the 2017 European Championship EMX 250 of the year. With 86 riders signed up to race the EMX 250 class, it can be sure there will be some bar banging action.

In addition Round 2 of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship will take to Trentino this weekend as well. Courtney Duncan is in the best spot coming into this event as the points leader from her overall victory in Indonesia. Courtney Duncan will have stiff competition though such as Nicky van Wordragen, Shana van der Vlist, Anne Borchers, Livia Lancelot, Nancy Van De Ven, and 40 other women, including the italian native Kiara Fontanesi who will be on a mission to rebound after struggling in Indonesia. The WMX class is sure to provide great battles that you won’t want to miss.

For Team HRC’s Tim Gajser everything seems to be clicking as he now sits 20 points ahead of second place in the championship. Gajser has been dominant the past 2 race weekends winning every race in Patagonia and Leon. Gajser will try to replicate these results in Pietramurata but as always, he will have competition from the rest of the field.

Some of the strongest competition this weekend will likely come from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Cairoli will have the fans of his home country motivating him to win, a feat he accomplished in 2016 and narrowly missed in 2015. Cairoli admits to feeling the pressure but is excited to race in Italy for the first time of the season.

Sitting third in the championship Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle may be an underdog for the win but not one to count out as he has shown flashes of brilliance and impressive speed so far this year. In addition the Belgian won the MXGP of Trentino in 2014 and he was in the top 5 in 2015. At the very least another top 5 finish is well within reach for Desalle.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek comes into Trentino 4th in the points championship and seems to be gaining comfort at each round so far this season. Van Horebeek is definetely a podium contender this weekend.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin showed he can handle pressure after a solid performance in Mexico. Gautier nabbed the FOX holeshot in Race 2 on Sunday and his ability to fight off the advances put him on the podium which will boost his confidence as he strives to improve week after week.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre was second at last year’s MXGP of Trentino and after a less than special Leon the 2015 World champ is hoping for a podium result to get his 2017 season on the right track.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Jeffrey Herlings may be new to the 450 but he is experienced at this circuit where he won last year in MX2 class. Herlings has been improving since the beginning of the season and he looks to continue that trend here in Trentino.

2016 MXGP of Trentino MXGP Podium

  1. Antonio Cairoli
  2. Romain Febvre
  3. Tim Gajser

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 156 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 136 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 119 p.; 4. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 116 p.; 5. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 112 p.; 6. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, HON), 111 p.; 7. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 89 p.; 8. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, SUZ), 78 p.; 9. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 73 p.; 10. Shaun Simpson (GBR, YAM), 70 p.

Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer came into Leon with the points lead and battled for the win, but after a mistake in Race 2 he settled for second overall. Seewer maintained the red plate for the first race in Europe but he will be looking to not only battle for the win but to stand on the top step of the podium for his second time this season.

Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass showed he has the mental and physical strength of a champion after fighting through an injury in Leon. Though he was injured he finished fourth overall and he lost miminal points. Coming to Trentino he has had nearly 2 weeks to heel up and with his stellar performances thus far you can bet he will provide a impressive result once again.

Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Benoit Paturel is looking to break a trend of fighting through the field. Paturel has the speed but he has recieved bad luck off the starts. If he can start up front the chances of him staying there are very high.

Now 4th in the championship LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber is also looking to break the mold he has found himself in which of third place. Lieber can fight with whomever comes along but he clearly wants to win. For him it may just be matter of time before he grabs a win and what better time than this weekend in Trentino?

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen is fifth in the championship and his consistent results have brought him there. After seeing his teammate win last weekend it may be the push he needs to move even higher up in the field.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington will come to Trentino with renewed confidence after winning his first GP of 2017 in Leon. Covington had a lack luster season until Leon but he will strive to keep the momentum of his win with him for this weekend.

TM Racing Factory Team's Samuele Bernardini, an Italian hero in MX2, will look to better his 4th place from last year and to reach the podium in front of his home crowd. Look out for 321 TM machine this weekend as he could claim his second podium this year.
