Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Glen Helen cancelled

MONACO (Principality of Monaco), 27 September 2016 - Mr Giuseppe Luongo, Youthstream President, and Mr Bud Felkamp, President of the Glen Helen Raceway, had a meeting at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Maggiora and in common agreement they have decided to not organize the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Glen Helen in 2017.

Glen Helen Raceway and Youthstream have worked in close cooperation over the last 2 years and both entities have invested serious funds for the organization of the MXGP of USA but despite the quality of the organization, the excellent racing and the massive media coverage the fan attendance was much lower than expected and also much lower than what this event deserves.

For such a prestigious event which deserves and needs an outstanding fan participation the risk is too high, and this is the main reason why it has been decided in common agreement to not organize the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in 2017 in Glen Helen. If the situation changes in the future both parties would be keen to work together again.

Introducing the MXGP Rookie project

MAGGIORA (Italy), 26 September 2016 – During the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations presented by Fiat Professional, Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo and FIM Europe President Dr. Wolfgang Srb were joined on stage by KNMV CEO Patrice Assendelft, KMNV Head Coach Mr. Marcel Hartman and MXGP Acedemy trainer’s Martin Van Genderen to introduce the new MXGP Rookie project.

As a result of the close partnership with Youthstream, the FIM Europe and the KMNV (Royal Dutch Motocross Federation), the MXGP Academy is taking on a new project where they aim to educate young motocross riders in countries that are new to the sport of motocross such as Qatar, Thailand and Malaysia. The project will be trialed in November 2016, and if it is successful it will be implemented at the start of 2017 with a four-year vision.

Five young riders, one from Belgium, one from Germany and three from The Netherlands, will be trained full time by people that specialize in Sports Psychology, Physical Training and Nutrition, for four months in Arnhem, The Netherlands, at the High Performance Centre Papendal. These riders will live with 375 other athletes from 12 different sporting disciplines, and they will also travel to Spain with Marcel Hartmen, the Manager of Team The Netherlands and member of the KMNV, throughout the winter where they can ride at a variety of different tracks.

Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo, “The MXGP Academy Rookie project is another extremely important step in helping young talent grow with the possibility of one day becoming a professional MXGP rider competing in the most prestigious motocross championship in the world. This project is the first of its kind in our sport and we would like to thank FIM-Europe, KNMV and the High Performance Center Papendal who together with Youthstream have driven and financed this activity. The goal is to build on this program and bring youth from all over the world to help them enter the world of professional Motocross without denying any schooling.”

FIM Europe President Dr. Wolfgang Srb, “I am very excited that we are close to the start of this promising project, after months of hard work, preparation and evaluation. FIM Europe does not only believe in sport as our core business but also, as an important pillar in education. Papendal is the perfect location and the partners give full support; KNMV with a vast experience in sport and training of young riders, the MXGP Academy with a strong record of training and promoting young talents, Youthstream as the leading promoter of motocross worldwide and FIM Europe as the biggest and most active Continental Union of FIM.”

Head Coach KMNV Mr. Marcel Hartman said, “This really is a unique motocross project where riders can make big steps in their individual development.”

All MXGP Rookies still go to school, so besides the motocross program they will continue their school education at the same time. Tailor made school programs with personal coaching and online lessons will be offered in association with their schools back home and the educational staff at Papendal.

Last but not least the KNMV supports the program with the services of life skill coach Mr. Henry Flierhuis who will assist the MXGP Rookies to develop their social skills. The following riders will join the MXGP Rookies trial: Marcel Conijn (NL), Raivo Dankers (NL), Raf Meuwissen (NL), Wannes Van De Voorde (BEL) and Marnique Appelt (GER).

Frantic French victory

MAGGIORA (Italy), 25 September 2016 – With 30 years of experience tucked tightly under our belt, the success of the 2016 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations presented by Fiat Professional on the nostalgic hills of Maggiora Park was a mesmerizing spectacle of what has been achieved in our beloved sport thus far.

The enormous, passionate and boisterous crowd has rewritten the handbook of fan etiquette with their non-stop flag waving, chain saw revving, air horn blowing, chanting, singing, and cheering that contributed to this years’ motocross of nations being as hair-raising, memorable and emotionally charged as it was.

It has been a while since the Chamberlain Trophy was so tightly contested. In the final race of the day the ‘Nations Result’ board shuffled between The USA, France and The Netherlands, with USA being one man down after a mind boggling scenario sidelined their best performer of the weekend Jason Anderson immediately after he won Race Two, and also with the defending champions, Team France, being buried at turn one. Meanwhile, The Netherlands had a high-powered start to the race with both of their riders, Jeffrey Herlings and Glenn Coldenhoff, inside the top three.

The Netherlands led the initial stages of the race, but as Coldenhoff faded and Webb propelled forward, The USA took over at the top. Team France had their work cut out for them, but Febvre is never one to shy away from a challenge and eventually caught Webb and put him on the front line for Team USA. Both riders engaged in a titanic battle, which raged on ‘til the moment Webb got cross-rutted and tipped over. With Webb losing a few spots The Netherlands leapt to the top of the board once more, and with one lap to go they were right on the cusp of claiming their first ever MXoN title before Febvre spoiled everything when he passed Tommy Searle for the vital 1 point that was required for Team France to defend the cup.

Team France won the Motocross of Nations for the first time in 2001 in Namur, Belgium with Yves Demaria, Luigy Segy and David Vuillemin, and they didn’t win it again until 2014 in Kegums, Latvia when Gautier Paulin, Dylan Ferrandis and Steven Frossard silenced the haters with their emphatic win. Since 2014, France is yet to be beaten, and their trail blaze continued in sensational style today around this spectacular hillside circuit, in a cauldron-like atmosphere that we have become accustomed to at the MXON.

 -

The Netherlands didn’t only have one Bullet in their gun this weekend; Glenn Coldenhoff was also lethal as he led Italy’s own Antonio Cairoli around turn one. Febvre, who was fifth around the first turn, lost his nerve on lap two and passed Australia’s Todd Waters before pressuring Canada’s Kaven Benoit into a small mistake to take third place.

On the third lap, the Italian erupted as Cairoli ripped up the inside of Coldenhoff to take the lead down the start straight. The following lap, Febvre, who was riding like a man possessed, carried a serious amount of momentum right around the outside of Coldenhoff for second, before putting the exact same move on Cairoli a few laps later.

Belgium’s Kevin Strijbos was silent but violent as he set fast lap after fast lap, and came out of nowhere to pass Coldenhoff for third at the midway mark.  Meanwhile Team USA’s Cooper Webb was also on a diehard mission to claw back spots way after starting outside of the top twenty. The American attacked the track fearlessly, yet with an incredible amount of control as he put an effortless pass on Coldenhoff for fourth with less than five minutes to go.

At the checkers, the fans roared for their hero Antonio Cairoli as he crossed the line in second place behind Romain Febvre, who took his third consecutive MXoN race win if we count the two he took last year in front of his home crowd in France. Belgium’s Kevin Strijbos put in an incredible ride for third ahead of USA’s Cooper Webb, while another Belgian in the form of Jeremy Van Horebeek rounded out the top five and was the best placed MX2 rider.

Race 1 top ten: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), 34:41.712; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:04.648; 3. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:19.429; 4. Cooper Webb (USA, Yamaha), +0:25.658; 5. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:34.398; 6. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), +0:37.475; 7. Todd Waters (AUS, Suzuki), +0:37.958; 8. Kaven Benoit (CAN, KTM), +0:41.284; 9. Alex Martin (USA, Yamaha), +0:50.538; 10. Cody Cooper (NZL, Honda), +0:52.837

Nations top ten: Belgium, USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Canada, Great Britain, Australia

 -

A good start couldn’t have come at a better time for Team USA. Jason Anderson ripped the holeshot ahead of Switzerland’s Arnaud Tonus, France’s Gautier Paulin and Holland’s Jeffrey Herlings. Herlings doesn’t do anything slowly, and he slung shot past Paulin before the end of lap one and squeezed Tonus on lap two which put him in second place before the end of lap one.

Behind Paulin, Evgeny Bobryshev made Russia’s presence noticeable when he ran hot up the inside of Paulin and almost T-boned him before dropping off the pace. Australia’s Dean Ferris nipped by the Russian who ended up crashing mid-moto in the same dip that caught Cairoli out in the Qualifying Race yesterday.

Meanwhile, Herlings set the fastest lap of the race on lap five and was taking sizeable chunks out of Andersons lead. Herlings showed Anderson a wheel on a couple of occasions before he lost his mind in frustration and slipped into his smaller bike habits where he could hammer the throttle and get away with it. This time he didn’t save it; he got too hard on the gas, lost traction and high-sided. Fortunately he had a good cushion and didn’t lose a spot, although the next three riders did catch him.

With five minutes to go, Herlings, Tonus, Paulin and Ferris put on a breath-taking exhibition of close combat racing as they rode wheel to wheel and ‘bar to ‘bar. Ferris managed to pass Paulin at one point but a gust of wind caught the Frenchman’s sails, and he passed Ferris back before passing Tonus half of a lap later as well.

Meanwhile, the MX2 riders had crept in on the action and with three laps to go ‘the Jeremys’, Belgium’s Jeremy Van Horebeek and Switzerland’s Jeremy Seewer, who were split by Great Britain’s Shaun Simpson, had Tonus and Ferris in their sights.

MXoN rookie, Jason Anderson, took an emphatic win for the Team USA ahead of The Netherlands’ Jeffrey Herlings, France’s Gautier Paulin, Switzerland’s Arnaud Tonus and Australia’s Dean Ferris.

As is the intense racing wasn’t hard enough on the old ticker, hearts were stopped when the race winner, Anderson, was landed on while celebrating. Jason was taken to the hospital for further observation.

Race 2 top ten: 1. Jason Anderson (USA, Husqvarna), 34:59.493; 2. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), +0:06.109; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Honda), +0:07.356; 4. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, Kawasaki), +0:08.861; 5. Dean Ferris (AUS, Yamaha), +0:09.890; 6. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:10.765; 7. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:11.126; 8. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:13.493; 9. Alex Martin (USA, Yamaha), +0:16.116; 10. Benoit Paturel (FRA, Yamaha), +0:30.103

Nations top ten: USA, France, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, Estonia, Canada, Australia,

 -

In what is the most evenly matched race of the day with all 40 riders on 450cc bikes, it was the 450cc rookie Jeffrey Herlings who led the way into turn two, with Great Britain’s Tommy Searle being the filling in a Dutch sandwich as he chased Herlings with Coldenhoff, hot on his heels.

Antonio Cairoli kept the crowd screaming at the top of their lungs when he executed a series of great passes to take second place before the end of lap one.

Belgium’s Kevin Strijbos looked better than ever today. Yes, he did win his home grand prix, the MXGP of Belgium, but that was just a mega result on paper. Today, Strijbos was physically riding superb!

As Coldenhoff faded and dimmed The Netherlands chances at hoisting the Chamberlain Cup in the air for the first time in the history of The Nations, Cairoli caught Herlings for a brief challenge, but all it did was tease the boisterous crowd as Herlings sensed he was there and hooked yet another gear to win relatively easily.

Meanwhile, it was the crucial battle for fourth that took epic to an all-new level as Webb and Febvre charged hard with the weight of their nations on their shoulders. At that point, USA had the lead in the overall standings ahead of The Netherlands and France, but then Webb threw it away when he got cross-rutted and fell.

Webb’s mistake worked in favor of The Netherlands who had one finger on the Chamberlain Cup right up till the very last moment when Febvre pulled something out of nothing and made an absolutely vital pass on Searle on the final lap of the race.

The Netherlands’ Jeffrey Herlings was tenacious in his efforts to stretch out a lead for his second ever MXoN race win. The first one was in Lommel back in 2012, which he won in similar fashion when he took the holeshot and checked out.

Cairoli cruised home for second place ahead of Strijbos, Febvre and Searle.

MXoN Race 3 top ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 34:34.924; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:07.624; 3. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:20.781; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:26.248; 5. Tommy Searle (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:28.215; 6. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:34.054; 7. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), +0:42.218; 8. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, Kawasaki), +0:44.343; 9. Jose Butron (ESP, KTM), +0:45.113; 10. Cooper Webb (USA, Yamaha), +0:46.305

Nations top ten: France, The Netherlands, USA, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Great Britain, Australia, Estonia, Canada.

The unveiling of the Monster Energy SMX Riders’ Cup trophy in Maggiora

MAGGIORA (Italy), 24 September 2016 - Earlier this evening Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo and FIM Europe President Dr. Wolfgang Srb were joined by one representative of each of the brands, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, KTM, Husqvarna, and Honda, that will be competing to etch their names in the history books as the winner of the first ever Monster Energy SMX Riders’ Cup trophy, on stage to present the trophy itself to the media that are here at Maggiora Park for the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations presented by Fiat Professional.

The design of the trophy resembles the event in every facet of its creation. It’s prestigious, it’s modern and it’s unique, just like the Monster Energy SMX Riders’ and Manufacturers’ Cup that is set to rock the VELTINS-Arena, Gelsenkirchen, Germany, in less than two weeks time, on October 8th. The trophy will be much like the coveted Chamberlain Cup, in the sense that it cannot be kept for longer than one year unless it is won consecutively.

Mr. Luongo and Mr. Srb both thanked the brands for their participation and support, while Husqvarna’s Mr. Robert Jonas, Kawasaki’s Mr. Steve Guttridge, KTM’s Mr. Pit Beier, Yamaha’s Mr. Alberto Barozzi, Suzuki’s Mr. Stefan Everts and Honda’s Mr. Roger Harvey, all expressed how much they are looking forward to the new challenge.

Mesmerizing onset in Maggiora

MAGGIORA (Italy), 23 September 2016 – Since its inception back in 1947, the FIM Motocross of Nations has provided thousands of people with special memories they’ll speak over again and again until the day they die. While many storylines have been created at this epic event over the years, some of the best have been made on Italian soil, such as the 1986 Motocross of Nations which took place right here at Maggiora Park. It was 30 years ago, but it was the start of something special, as the event was a result of a young and ambitious Giuseppe Luongo embarking on his mission to grow, develop and revolutionize our fantastic sport of motocross.

The 1986 Motocross of Nations was Mr. Giuseppe Luongo’s first ever attempt at organizing an international event, and right off the bat, he did a phenomenal job. The event was groundbreaking in many ways, from television and newspaper coverage, through to the massive crowd, which was easily the biggest of its era. While the organization and buzz created was revolutionary, but what really made the event unforgettable was the show America’s Dream Team, David Bailey, Johnny O’Mara and Ricky Johnson put on for the fans with their blistering fast speed and modernized style of racing and riding. Team USA waxed every nation that day, all three riders were untouchable, even O’Mara who blitzed past the best 500cc riders in the world on his Honda CR125. It left the world speechless and it is often described as the most memorable event in the history of motocross.

Earlier this afternoon, the celebration of 30 years since that memorable day and the initiation of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations presented by Fiat Professional took place inside the Media Center here at Maggiora Park where Youthstream President, Mr. Giuseppe Luongo was joined on stage by FIM Europe President, Dr. Wolfgang Srb, FIM/CMS Director, Mr. Tony Skillington, Organisers at Maggiora, Mr. Stefano Avandero and Mr. Paolo Schneider and of course, none other than the actual USA Dream Team of ’86, David Bailey, Johnny O’Mara and Ricky Johnson. Following the introduction speeches and special moments with the American legends, the top MXoN teams took to the stage, one team at a time, for an exclusive Press Conference.

Giuseppe Luongo opened the Press Conference with an heartwarming trip down memory lane where he spoke of how proud he is to see how far the FIM Motocross World Championship and the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations has come. He also thanked the Dream Team personally for their contribution to that legendary weekend back in ’86, before talking about what to expect from the 70th edition of the FIM Motocross of Nations here in Maggiora this weekend, “with 30 years of experience on our shoulders and with Stefan and Paolo, who have done an amazing job and have invested a lot in the development of this venue, I am sure we will have a big crowd out here,  the racing will be amazing, and this event will be a great success.” He said.

Stefano Avandero and Paolo Schneider followed on by expressing their excitement for this weekend, and by thanking Youthstream supporting their dream of restoring the sensational venue here, Maggiora Park. FIM Europe’s Dr. Wolfgang Srb and FIM’s Tony Skillington also touched on 1986 and how proud they are to be a part of the growth of MXGP and the Motocross of Nations, before the microphone was handed over to the stars of the USA Dream Team.

On 1986… “It was so impressive and spectacular from an organizational stand point to look at the track, the hills, they were impressive, the way the track is decorated the way the system works.” Bailey said, “it was emotional for me because it was the best time of my life and then to come and see this track, it was the most impressive track I had ever seen, and it still is impressive and I am happy to be back.”

“Is there a track that compares to this? Not really, and that’s why it’s so special.” O’Mara said. “When we came over in ’86, we came to race, but the track was amazing, the crowd was huge and crazy and to race for the Italian fans, it was a show and a great experience,” Johnson said, “It’s great to be a part of the history, especially in Maggiora, and to see what Paolo and Stefano have done, it’s not the same track, it’s new and improved, just like the GP’s. Everything is much better, the presentation, everything, it’s just better.”

As the defending champions, Team France were first on stage with Romain Febvre #1, Benoit Paturel #2, Gautier Paulin #3 and their Team Manager Pascal Finot, where they seemed confident for the weekend and hope to make it a three-peat. Team USA, as last years runner-up were next up with Cooper Webb #4, Alex Martin #5, Jason Anderson #6 and Team Manager Roger De Coster. “I’ve walked around the track and it is really well prepared, it looks impressive.” De Coster said, “we’ve got a good team and I think we stand a chance.” Webb, commented, “I learned a lot last year. We came so close and I think that has put fuel on the fire and we’re ready to go racing.” “This track is absolutely beautiful!” Martin said, “I’ve been watching GoPro footage of Cairoli and watching DVD’s and it’s nothing like coming here in person and seeing it in person.” Anderson agreed, “I’ve been playing MXGP2 the videogame, and that’s been a lot of fun but nothing compares to seeing it for real.”

Team Belgium, as the most successful team entered with 56 medals in their tally, were led on stage by Kevin Strijbos #7, Jeremy Van Horebeek #8 and Brent Van Doninck #9 with Team Manager Joel Smets. The first and most obvious question for the Belgians was why the decision was made to put Van Doninck on a 450cc in the Open class, and keep Van Horebeek in MX2, “I know Yamaha have been working very hard to prepare a rocket ship for Jeremy, and I would also rather see Jeremy 200% motivated on a bike that is not his, but is really excited to ride, rather than have him 80% motivated on a bike that is not his.” Smets said.

The most impressive result of last year was Team Estonia’s fourth place finish, and this weekend they will have the exact same team, Prit Ratsep #10, Tanel Leok #11, Harri Kullas #12 managed by Lauri Roosiorg, they were next up followed by Team Switzerland’s Valentin Guillod #13, Jeremy Seewer #14, Arnaud Tonus #15 and Team Manager Diego Clement, where they made it clear there is no pressure, they just want to ride and have a blast with the hope that a good day will get better with a podium finish. Another team making light of the fact they have one of the strongest line-ups this weekend was The Netherlands with the Team Manager Marcel Hartman saying that his team of Glenn Coldenhoff #16, Brian Bogers #17 and Jeffrey Herlings #18 are only hoping for a modest top five.

Team Australia with Todd Waters #19, Mitchell Evans #20, Dean Ferris #21 and Manager Gary Benn, Team New Zealand with Cody Cooper #22, Josiah Natzke #23, Hamish Harwood #24 and Manager Bevan Weal, and Team Germany with Max Nagl #25, Henry Jacobi #26, Dennis Ullrich #27 and Manager Wolfgang Thomas, rounded out the top nine teams that were presented.

Last but not least, Team Italy raised the roof when the eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli #40, Samuele Bernardini #41, Michele Cervelin #42 and Manager Thomas Traversini were welcomed to the stage. As it is Antonio Cairoli’s birthday today, the entire media center sang him happy birthday. It was incredible.

While the atmosphere has been amazing all day, it escalated beyond belief at 18:00 when all thirty-eight teams were presented to the public one by one on the start-line. Each team was bought out and introduced on the back of a Fiat Professional FULLBACK, which the fans loved and weren’t shy at all when it came to cheering and making some noise for their favorite teams.

There is already an insane vibe out here in Maggiora, which is certain to intensify from dusk tomorrow. The ballot will take place at 09:00 central European time, followed by the LIVE Studio Show hosted by Paul Malin and Jeff Emig with special guests Jeffrey Herlings, Gautier Paulin and Ricky Johnson. Watch it on our Facebook page ‘MXGP’ or on www.mxgp-tv.com.
