MXGP fever in France

ST. JEAN D’ANGELY (France), 01 June 2016 – We’ve officially crossed the halfway point this season as we head into round ten of the FIM Motocross World Championship which will take place at the glorious circuit of Saint Jean D’Angely, France, this weekend, the same track that hosted the spectacular 2011 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.

St. Jean d’Angely is situated around one hour north of Bordeaux on the west coast of France. It first made its first appearance on the motocross grand prix calendar back in 1984 and has been a common location for the MXGP of France ever since.

This weekend, the premier classes MXGP and MX2 will be joined by the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship, which is led by one of the most popular French riders in the world Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot. The sixth round of the European Championship EMX250 will also join them, as will the fourth round of the European Championship EMX125 presented by FMF Racing.

As the winners of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, France has the undisputed strongest line up of riders in MXGP this year. It’s hard to say who will be the most swamped in the paddock this weekend with the likes of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre, Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier and MP32 Tip Top Racing’s Milko Potisek all being famed uber fast Frenchmen.

After popping his MXGP winning cherry in front of home fans at the MXGP of France last year, the defending champ Romain Febvre will be in for a big weekend. Now that we are already nine rounds into the eighteen round series, points are more crucial than ever, especially for Febvre since he trailing Tim Gajser by 24 big ones.

Spain was a tough weekend for the gritty Frenchman who got caught in an unlucky incident where Wilvo Virus Performance KTM’s Shaun Simpson broke a chain while fending off the champ and left him with nowhere to go. Febvre fell and was ploughed into by fellow French star Paulin before having Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli finish him off while trying to avoid the carnage. The result of the crash was a dislocated shoulder which could have caused problems with the ligaments and muscles. Hopefully he has had some solid treatment throughout the week and will be feeling stronger this weekend.

On the other hand, Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser put in his most impressive performance thus far. His stats are nothing short of eye-popping, as is the way he rides. With the red plate firmly in his hands at the moment, Gajser is flying the flag high for the kids of the next-gen with his intense no flying ef’s given riding style that is next level insane, yet awesome at the same time.

Meanwhile Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl is hungrier than ever for a win. It was visibly noticeable that the German turned it up a notch in Spain. It’s obvious he wants to win, as will Paulin who finished on the third step of the box last weekend despite being strapped to the couch for a good chunk of this season.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle also put in his first really solid ride last weekend and has the confidence of a grand prix win here in Saint Jean. The last time we were here, back in 2014, Desalle had a view from the top and collected the biggest bonus of the weekend with the win.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli has also won here a couple of times and if he wins the grand prix this weekend, he will be the first rider to collect three overall wins here at Saint Jean.

1. Romain Febvre

2. Evgeny Bobryshev

3. Antonio Cairoli

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 385 points; 2. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 361 p.; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 338 p.; 4. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 317 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 156 p.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings could be in for a challenge this weekend since he’ll be letting loose on the home soil of his biggest threat Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis. It’s bound to be another “The Bullet vs The Mullet” show-down and in case you missed it, Ferrandis was running a butt-patch last weekend ‘The Mullet’ so that is where that phrase comes from. Nevertheless, the likelihood that The Bullet will be victorious is still more than 95%, so fingers crossed one of those other super fast MX2 dudes, be it Dylan or Pauls or Jeremy or even someone else like France’s own Benoit Paturel, can do something about it.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is starting to calm down a little bit now and is actually finishing races with out sampling the dirt more than he has to, which as a result has put him on the box at the last two rounds.

Kemea Yamaha MX Official Team’s Benoit Paturel proved he’s got the goods to run up front and with second place finish last weekend in Spain. It’s likely that the Frenchman has his eye on a piece of podium pie this weekend in front of his home crowd! How epic would that be?

Meanwhile Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer hasn’t had any ‘lovely days’ over the last few rounds, but if the rain stays away this weekend and the track firms up the same way it normally does, there is a good chance we will see Seewer back on the box.

Frenchmen in France

This coming weekend should see a massive crowd attend the Grand Prix of France at the St Jean d’Angely circuit, as a bunch of French riders will be looking for victories or podium finishes. Every year the home riders produce something special, and 2016 shouldn’t be anything different.

For the French riders it has been a year of injuries and misfortune. Even defending MXGP champion Romain Febvre, who remains in strong contention for this year’s MXGP championship, has carried a selection of injuries this year.

Leading the way for the Frenchie’s will be Febvre, who despite mixed form, and carrying a shoulder injury, will be one of the favorites to take out the MXGP overall next weekend. The Monster Energy Yamaha rider is still second in the MXGP championship points and loves the hard pack of St Jean d’Angely.

HRC backed rider Gautier Paulin picked up an injury during training between the second and third rounds of the MXGP series, and has missed five rounds while recovering. He came back to form last weekend with 4-3 results and third place on the podium, and will no doubt be keen to win in his home GP. Way back in 2011 Paulin won a moto at the MXoN held at St Jean, and has performed well often there.

For Dylan Ferrandis it was round two in Thailand that saw his championship hopes take a nosedive. While running up front he crashed hard and spent two months on the sidelines, coming back for the GP of Latvia he quickly come to terms with the speed of the MX2 leader Jeffrey Herlings. Ferrandis has won a couple of times against Herlings since his return and nobody would be surprised if he won the GP of France.

After Febvre, young Frenchman Benoit Paturel is the highest placed local rider in the FIM Motocross World Championships, as he holds down fourth place in the MX2 series. Paturel is without question a rider with a big future and his form continues to grow. Scoring a podium finish in Spain last weekend the Yamaha mounted rider will be looking to one better this weekend and landing on the top step of the MX2 podium.

Former MX2 world champion Jordi Tixier hasn’t had the best of seasons after a pre-season operation meant he has missed the first seven rounds of the MXGP championship. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider has slowly improved with 32 points to his name from Italy and Spain and a podium finish seems unlikely next weekend, however on talent alone anything is possible with this young charger.

Not having the best of seasons in the MXGP class is Christophe Charlier, who is 12th in the MXGP championship points. His best moto result until now a fourth place finish in the opening moto in Germany, and while he did show an improvement in form in Germany, he still isn’t really running with the top guys often enough to feel as though he is a podium contender.

Gajser & Herlings strengthen their grip in Spain

TALAVERA DE LA REINA (Spain), 29 May 2016 – After a soggy day yesterday, the old-school track here in Talavera de la Reina was disked late last night and then again early this morning, which made for perfect conditions today at round nine of the FIM Motocross World Championship where Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings strengthened their grips on their respective red plates.

Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser is the Jedi of MXGP at the moment. Sometimes you have to scratch your head at how he stays on, but take nothing away from the Slovenian, his speed and skill is overwhelming. The nineteen-year-old continues to push the law of physics and seems to be mastering the art of this sport we call motocross. After an uber impressive double moto victory today, his second double-doozie this year with the first being at the season opener in Qatar on his MXGP debut, he now has a 24-point lead in the championship over the defending champion Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl has always been a picture of consistency. The German did look like he tried to turn it up a bit, but beating Gajser at the moment looks like it is only possible if the Slovenian dethrones himself.  “I was really trying hard, I tried everything but failed.” Nagl still smiled while speaking to Lisa Leyland after the final race, “he was just a little bit quicker, but anyway I am happy, I had a great day.”

Full credit must be given to Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin who stood on the box for the first time since August last year. The Frenchman who is currently the vice-world champion has been on the couch for most of the season after injuring his back and ribs in a training accident in April. He only made his return to racing two weeks ago at the MXGP of Trentino where he finished fourteenth. Incredibly, he was third today.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle has been nursing injuries since the start of the season but has shown he can still run the pace with his fourth place finish this weekend, while Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev rounded out the top five ahead of Romain Febvre who also put in a gritty performance.

On the topic of the defending champion, Febvre, there is no doubt that the crash he had yesterday has taken the wind out of his sails while his biggest rival, Gajser, has just gone from strength to strength. Febvre told us about his injury at the start of Race 2, “nothing is broken in my shoulder but there is some damage. It is very painful to ride, I can only hold the ‘bars but I cannot pull. So it’s a tough weekend.” He said, “All I can do is take as many points as I can. I will fight and I will give everything I can.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli also had a rough weekend. The Italian only finished seventh after crashing in both races but on a positive note he set the Tag Heuer Fastest Lap, which means he was the fastest guy around Talavera this weekend. Meanwhile, keeping the Spanish fans on their toes, Marchetti Racing KTM’s Jose Butron equaled his best result this weekend with an eleventh.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings made a solid statement with his dominance out here on the clay of Talavera. Did you say clay? Yes! While Herlings is best known for his phenomenal skill in the sand, he can also clean up on a hard surface too, which is exactly what he did today with a double moto victory for his ninth consecutive grand prix overall.

After a bit of water and sun this weekend, Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel blossomed. The young Frenchman led the first couple of laps in race two before being passed by Herlings. While Herlings did what Herlings does best (checked out), Paturel rode’er home for second place, which was enough for second overall. This achievement is a career milestone for the lad riding the number ‘6’.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass took a bunch of points back on Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer today with a pair of thirds for third overall in comparison to Seewer’s eleventh in race one and fourth in race two for seventh. Both of these guys are similar in speed and are battling for second place in the championship, so every point counts. Jonass took 12 points on Seewer today, but still trails the Swiss man by 25.

Two weeks ago Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis took a massive pin and burst Jeffrey Herlings’ bubble of hope for a perfect season. He is the only rider to have beaten The Bullet this year and briefly ignited a flame in MX2. The Frenchman, who was the top Qualifier here in Spain, has proven he can challenge the dominance of Herlings but unfortunately had nothing for him today.

Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Aleksandr Tonkov did enough for fifth, which was his fourth top five finish of the season.

As for Honda Gariboldi’s Spaniard Jorge Zaragoza, a bike problem in race one and a spill in race two left him way down the score card, in twenty-third.

MX2 Race 1 Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 34:15.998; 2. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:20.611; 3. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:23.309; 4. Benoit Paturel (FRA, Yamaha), +0:24.732; 5.
