Gajser & Herlings lift the level in Latvia

KEGUMS (Latvia), 01 May 2016 – All pandemonium broke loose today at the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship as riders were kicked and bucked all over the show out on the rough and technical circuit of Zelta Zirgs, in Kegums, Latvia.

A packed schedule, with three European classes also out on track this weekend, made for brutal conditions where being smooth and consistent was the ultimate challenge. Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser, the same guy that was such an animal on the bike in MX2, has turned into the smoothest and smartest rider in MXGP… most of the time. Gajser embraced that style on his way to the win in race one, but in race two, the beast was back as the nineteen year-old recovered from an enormous crash to finish fourth which was still enough for the overall, his fourth of the season. Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings cleaned up once again to remain unbeaten in 2016.

Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser had an action packed day in the office. The kid known to his fans as Tiga won the first race, which catapulted him to the top of the championship standings since Romain Febvre only came home in fifth. Heading into race two Gajser had a 6 point lead in the championship, but twisting the kaleidoscope, he had a huge high-side through the waves. Lucky to be unscathed, he got back to his bike, which was still running at the time and in the heat of the moment, dropped the clutch and stalled it. When it fired back up, he was outside the top twenty but astonishingly he got all the way back to fourth for his fourth grand prix overall.

Gajser is the only rider to have finished on the box at every round this season. He now trails Febvre in the championship by 1 point and still tops all the stats with 3 qualifying race wins, 108 laps led, 6 race wins, 4 grand prix victories and 6 podium appearances.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli is in second place on the ‘laps led’ chart with 39. The Italian was on the brink of his first victory since the MXGP of Great Britain in Matterley Basin, which was almost one year ago, but ended up being nudged down to second place on the final lap when Tim Gajser added two more points to his tally with his pass on Max Nagl. Right after the race, TC222 said “I’m not happy about my performance because I’m missing some speed after fifteen minutes, I know I am back and I want to win, I want to win soon.”

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre looked frustrated after his fifth in race one but seemed to channel that energy into race two where he bounced back for the race win. “We changed my bike completely in the second race and I feel like I was riding like I know how in the second moto so I am happy about that, and I am happy to be on the podium again.” He said.

Fans that have followed the FIM Motocross World Championship for many years would have had ‘chicken skin’ watching Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl’s newfound aggression in race one. ‘Chicken skin’? It’s a funny term the Europeans tend to use when your skin crawls or to describe that mysterious feeling you get when you are astounded, excited, impressed or proud, or even a combination of all emotions. The German literally hit the boost button and reeled in Gajser to challenge for the lead on the final lap. Gajser had to up his game to keep him at bay, which he did, but there was absolutely nothing in it at the checkers. Unfortunately in race two the ‘12’ was a victim of Gajser’s mistake but bounced back for fifth which left him tied with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek for fourth overall.

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev had a bittersweet weekend. He was the fastest in free practice and timed practice yesterday but got tagged by Gajser on the start in the qualifying race and went down hard. The Russian looked hurt and didn’t rejoin but bravely lined up today with the last gate pick and soldiered his way to sixth!

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings is out of this world at the moment. While a lot of riders struggled with the roughness of the circuit, Herlings just got stronger and faster. It was awe-inspiring to watch The Bullet attack the track with such finesse. He won both races by more than thirty seconds and lapped more than half of the field, “I’m back, I’m feeling strong and I’m just trying to get the best out of myself, it’s six out of six wins this weekend and I hope there will be many more to come.” He said after his win in the final race.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie finally caught a break! The Brit has been lightning fast all season but has been faced with all sorts of adversity, from random off-track excursions through to mechanical failures. This weekend he managed to avoid drama and claimed his first piece of silverware this season with two second place finishes for second overall.

Black smoke is still puffing from the diesel, Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer, who remains consistent with yet another podium finish in third.

Stranger things have happened. If you haven’t heard that phrase before, it’s something English speakers say when something unlikely happens. In the case of MX2 race two, it was Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team ’s Petar Petrov being a member of the toss-up for the Fox Holeshot! The Bulgarian is a big lad and starts are normally his biggest nemesis. After bouncing back in remarkable fashion in race one when he crashed and peeled back a bunch of places to finish sixth, he finished fourth in race two for fourth overall.

After spending the last two months recovering from shoulder surgery, Monster Energy Kawasaki racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis made an impressive return this weekend in the demanding conditions here at the ‘Zelta Zirgs’ circuit for fifth overall.

Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass fans swarmed the venue to watch their hero do business. The Latvian rode the wheels off his Red Bull KTM to finish third in race one, while in race two he struggled to come to grips with gnarliness of the circuit and kept crashing. He only finished fourteenth which left him in seventh overall, while fellow Latvian, riding for HSF Logistics Motorsports KTM, Roberts Justs went 15 – 8 for twelfth overall.

Gajser & Herlings go pole again

KEGUMS (Latvia), 30 April 2016 – Don’t judge a book by its cover. The track here in Kegums has a warm brown sandy appearance that looks light and fluffy and a load of fun, at least for those that stand trackside. For those that are out on the track racing, it is an entirely different beast as the hard base is deceivingly slick in places and gets extremely rough with massive high speed braking bumps into the turns, and sharp acceleration bumps out.

Although the track got the better of Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser back in 2014 when he broke his back at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, that certainly wasn’t playing on his mind today as he snatched the lead from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli in the final stages of the race to take his third consecutive Qualifying Race win. Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings remains unbeaten making it six from six.

Adding to the action of the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship was the first races of second round of the European Championship EMX250, which was won by Bodo Schmidt Husqvarna’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and the second round of the EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing which was won by Mike Kras. In addition, the first round of the European Championship EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing took place with Sahkar Racing KTM’s Jago Geerts winning the opening race.

There was carnage at the start of the MXGP Qualifier as the two riders that were fastest in Timed Practice Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev and Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle crashed ¾ of the way down the start straight after Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser tagged Bobby and ripped the ‘bars out of his hands. Searle rejoined the race but crashed again on his own a little bit later, while Bobby was less fortunate and looked uncomfortable as he walked towards the medical center.

Gajser wasn’t collected in the crash and came out of the first turn in second behind Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli who went on to lead the entire race except the final three laps.

Meanwhile Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos kept the leaders in check for the most part of the race while a tight battle for fourth took place between Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s duo of Jeremy Van Horebeek and Romain Febvre and Wilvo Virus Performance KTM’s Shaun Simpson. When Febvre sees huge kickers, he just hammers the throttle, which is exactly the technique he used to get around Simpson for fifth.

In the latter stages of the race Gajser unleashed the beast, pinning it through the waves and up the inside of Cairoli to take the lead and his third consecutive qualifying heat win. Van Horebeek, on the other hand, hit the boost button on the final lap and took third making his fellow Belgian, Strijbos the filling in a Yam sandwich as Febvre rounded out the top five.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Max Nagl looked awesome out here in Kegums as he launched the ski jumps bigger than anyone else on his way to sixth from outside the top ten, while Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Ben Townley made his return to the championship with a seventh ahead of Simpson.

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), 24:20.229; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:01.633; 3. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:04.146; 4. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:05.302; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:11.279; 6. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:20.021; 7. Ben Townley (NZL, Suzuki), +0:34.507; 8. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:35.725; 9. Clement Desalle (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:36.502; 10. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), +0:40.339

Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer was revved up when the gates dropped for the MX2 Qualifying Race. He got a killer jump and pulled across on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, who was on the inside of him, to nabb the holeshot. Chasing the duo was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, HSF Logistic Motorsport KTM’s Brian Bogers and Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel.

Back to Seewer, he put in an epic ride for the first two laps complete with big whips before The Bullet, Herlings, scrubbed past him for the lead. Jonass soon got around Seewer as well but couldn’t match the lap times of his teammate to even think about challenging for the win.

In the meantime, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Max Anstie was on the gas and blitzed past Paturel and Bogers to take over fourth and then chomped down a hefty gap to challenge Seewer for third. Anstie threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Suzuki rider but in the end couldn’t get the job done and had to settle for fourth.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis had a good race considering it’s his first since the season opener in Qatar. The doctor only gave him the ‘OK’ to ride one week ago, so he hasn’t had much time on the bike. Nevertheless, he was pinned and came from outside the top ten to finish fifth.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 23:57.717; 2. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:18.347; 3. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:19.756; 4. Max Anstie (GBR, Husqvarna), +0:28.318; 5. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:54.432; 6. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, KTM), +0:58.671; 7. Petar Petrov (BUL, Kawasaki), +0:59.859; 8. Brent Van doninck (BEL, Yamaha), +1:00.204; 9. Benoit Paturel (FRA, Yamaha), +1:04.700; 10. Michele Cervellin (ITA, Honda), +1:09.890.
