Welcome press conference in Riga

Earlier today a press conference was held at the Mols mall in Riga to promote the sixth edition of the MXGP of Latvia. Youthstream Director Mr. David Luongo and FIM/CMS Director Mr. Tony Skillington joined the event organizer Mr. Kristers Sergis and the Sports Director of the Department at the Ministry of Education Mr. Edgars Severs on the podium where they expressed their thanks and gratitude in front of the public and national television representatives.

“As the promoter of the FIM Motocross World Championship we are very happy to be here in Latvia.” Mr. David Luongo said, “They have hosted the world championship since 2009 and it’s always very good. Our goal is always to bring motocross to a higher level and to be on the MXGP calendar we need world-class events. I can say that Latvia is a world-class event; it has world-class facilities with a nice paddock with a lot of space, and a good track. We also have great support from the organizer Mr. Sergis. Overall it is a very good GP and a great opportunity for Latvia to be recognized worldwide.”

Mr. Tony Skillington agreed, “This is one of the greatest facilities. On behalf of the FIM we are very happy to be here, so thanks to the organizers and also to Youthstream, the promoters of MXGP, it’s a great privilege to come to Latvia.”

Mr. Edgars Severs said, “It’s great to have this event because it helps Latvia become more known worldwide and also because motocross is very popular in Latvia.”

The event was wrapped up with Mr. Kristers Sergis explaining how grateful he is to have an event of this caliber at the circuit of Kegums and how he hopes that the FIM Motocross World Championship will return next year before the word was passed to the riders that were present, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, 24MX Lucas Oil Honda Racing’s Matiss Karro, HSF Logistics Motosport Team’s Roberts Justs, Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha’s Aleksandr Tonkov and the wildcards, MX Moduls duo of Davis Ivanovs and Karlis Sabulis. How to watch the MXGP of Latvia

KEGUMS (Latvia), 29 April 2016 – The zesty sand circuit of Kegums will host the sixth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship this weekend where Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre leads the rookie Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser by a miniscule 3 points in the premier class. Neither rider has won here before whereas the likes of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s duo of Antonio Cairoli and Glenn Coldenhoff have, as has Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle.

This weekend Latvian television representatives will be onsite, most will have a keen eye on the Latvian motocross extraordinaire Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass.

As always, anyone anywhere in the world can tune into www.mxgp-tv.com on Saturday and Sunday to watch all of the action, including the Qualifying Races, LIVE or check the guides below for where you can watch the MXGP of Latvia in your respective country.

Tonkov to miss the MXGP of Latvia with bruised back

Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Official MX2 Team rider Aleksandr Tonkov will skip MXGP of Latvia on May 1st to rest from an injury sustained during a training crash in Belgium this week.

Tonkov, currently fourth in the 2016 MX2 FIM World Championship standings, bruised his back on Tuesday while training for the MXGP series upcoming round six in Kegums, Latvia. Team staff transported the Russian rider immediately to a local hospital for x-rays.

Tonkov went for further consultation with Dr. Toon Claes in Belgium on Wednesday.

"Aleksandr went to the hospital in Neerpelt where they did some x-rays and a scan. Nothing is broken, but he severely bruised his back," said Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Team Manager Tim Mathys.

"Yesterday he went to Dr. Claes who advised to not ride in Latvia to give the body time to heal. Unfortunately crashing and injuries are also a part of racing," Mathys said.

Tonkov will travel to Latvia with medical consent for sponsor contact, as the Russian rider is well-known at Kegums and upright movement is considered positive therapy for this type of injury.

Tonkov has raced to the podium twice this season and showed consistent and strong speed in his starts on the YZ250F. Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha Official MX2 Team staff said the rider will remain under observation as he recovers and his status for round seven in Germany will be decided after further consultation.

Reed keenly anticipating Grand Prix return

MONACO, (Principality of Monaco) 28 April 2016 - A lot of water has passed under the bridge since one of supercross and motocross’ greatest riders last lined up in a Grand Prix gate but 34 year old Chad Reed is ready to wade back into the MXGP frame with two wild-card appearances on his factory Yamaha during the 2016 FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship campaign. The Australian has penned the British Grand Prix at Matterley Basin (Winchester) on June 18-19 and the Grand Prix of Lombardia - Italy at Mantova on June 25-26 to make his ‘debut’ in MXGP and first competitive run in Europe (Motocross of Nations outings for Australia aside) since 2001.

Reed, father of two, competed for a single year in Grand Prix at the start of the century for the team that is now Monster Energy Kawasaki and on works machinery. Then 19 years old Chad shocked the establishment by finishing second in the world, won a (250cc) Grand Prix through the bumpy sand of Lierop and then moved to America to seek – and celebrate – fame and fortune on stadium tracks and through Pro National MX.

The veteran of fifteen seasons of supercross is approaching the end of the 2016 Monster Energy AMA term (only events in New Jersey and Las Vegas to go) and has identified the sweeping curves of Matterley Basin and the shallow sand of Mantova as the best settings to compete in front of his fans on the other side of the Atlantic.

“I have always valued my one and only year in Europe and I'm so excited to come back after all these years,” he said. “I briefly mentioned it on social media and many UK and European fans have shown lots of enthusiasm so that in return makes it a ton of fun for me.”

Reed will surely count on the backing of the current reigning champions Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing and will have a YZ450F prepped for his return to the fray. Fans of the ‘22’ will remember well his gripping duel with Tony Cairoli at the 2009 Motocross of Nations at Franciacorta in Italy. The old foes will renew their acquaintance but Reed will also have stiff opposition in the forms of Romain Febvre, Tim Gajser, Evgeny Bobryshev, Gautier Paulin, Clement Desalle, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Ben Townley, Max Nagl, Kevin Strijbos, Tommy Searle, Shaun Simpson and more. Apart from any aspirations of results in MXGP, Chad is already thinking about the experience of a world championship stage once more. “I haven't really given any thought to the racing itself I'm just excited to see old faces and new fans,” he remarked.

MXGP enters the Kegums circuit for the MXGP of Latvia this weekend and the first of three back-to-back events with visits to Germany and Italy ahead. Reed will join the circus for rounds eleven and twelve with many fans of the athlete and the sport awaiting his presence at the highest level international.
