MXGP will officially return to Switzerland in 2016!

LOMMEL (Belgium), 01 August 2015 – Following the press conference here at the MXGP of Belgium, Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo, FIM Europe President Dr. Wolfgang Srb, FIM/CMS Director Mr. Tony Skillington and Mr. Willy Laderach and Mrs Andrea Laderach put pen to paper for MXGP’s return to Switzerland which is scheduled to take place on the weekend of August 7th in Frauenfeld/Gahnang.

“I am happy to announce there will be an MXGP in Switzerland, it has been a very long time since we have been there,”Mr. Giuseppe Luongo said, “the Swiss Federation are very professional and they have been able to put together a package which is fantastic to host the MXGP of Switzerland. Mr. Willy Laderach followed on, “we are excited to sign the contract here in Lommel for the MXGP of Switzerland. We have found a lot of good partners and sponsors to help organize a very good motocross grand prix. We hope that all of you see next year how good our GP will be.”

Simpson & Anstie lead the way

LOMMEL (Belgium), 01 August 2015 – The godfather of sand races and the fourteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship got underway today in the grueling sand of Lommel where the Brits, Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson and Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie took the qualifying heat thrones.

KTM Factory Junior’s Jorge Prado took the first race victory and his third of the season here at the seventh round of the European Championship EMX125, while GL12 Yamaha Racing’s wildcard Brad Anderson signed up and won the first race of the sixth and final round of the European Championship EMX300.

Speaking of the European Championship EMX300, last year’s runner-up Marco Maddii kept a cool head for eighth in the race which was enough for him to be crowned the 2015 European Championship EMX300 champion.

With exceptional weather and a sand track that had shaped up gnarlier than ever, the gates dropped for the qualifier and the rookie sand sensation, Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Glenn Coldenhoff edged out The Kid Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos for the holeshot.

Strijbos was quick to get around Coldenhoff but it didn’t matter, both Suzuki riders’ claim to fame was short lived as Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson lofted the quad on his way to the front. Speaking of the quad, it is hard to explain just how epic that jump is. The only indicator is that in a field filled with the fastest and most talented dirt bike riders in the world, Simpson was the only rider in any class to do it and whether he won the qualifier or not he was already a legend in the eyes of everyone watching.

Luckily for Simpson, he is more than just an epic jump launcher, and he pulled it all together for his first qualifying heat victory of his career, “I hit a milestone today, I’ve been racing GP’s for eleven years and finally I took my first ever qualifying heat race win” the Scot reminded us, “it’s quite hard to believe. I felt comfortable out there, I had a few good lines, a few bad lines, but that’s the beauty of a sand track, you can make up quite a lot of time and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, after randomly whipping out a fast lap in the last second of Timed Practice, Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre tried to challenge Simpson for the lead but eventually let him have it and sat back for an easy second.

Back in third, Strijbos and Coldenhoff made for a fast moving blur of yellow as they tossed the position about. In the end, it was the seasoned Belgian, Strijbos who managed to take third. Coldenhoff put in yet another solid performance for fourth while Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Jeremy Van Horebeek rounded out the top five.

While two Belgians made up the top five, unfortunately Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle will not be racing this weekend after his shoulder popped out in Timed Practice.

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), 25:04.611; 2. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:11.856; 3. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:19.997; 4. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, Suzuki), +0:21.832; 5. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:25.097; 6. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:32.939; 7. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Honda), +0:36.356; 8. Todd Waters (AUS, Husqvarna), +0:37.554; 9. Nathan Watson (GBR, Husqvarna), +0:38.729; 10. Tyla Rattray (RSA, Kawasaki), +0:41.277

Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie pulled the holeshot and initially looked to be taking his time in finding good lines. Sure enough he found some that worked for him and let that number 99 ‘dance’ as he would say, for his third consecutive qualifying heat victory of the season. “I haven’t ridden here since I won last year but once you know how to ride around Lommel it kind of stays,” he said “I have a great memory from here, because of last year, but two races tomorrow and we’ll see how it goes.”

Second went to Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Petar Petrov who was so fast all day. He literally lives less than five minutes from the circuit here in Lommel, so for those that know him and have seen him ride in the sand would have known that he was capable of such a performance. Petrov rode amazing for second while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass withstood the pressure of a charging Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Brent Van Doninck for third.

The head turner in this race was definitely the local kid Brent Van Doninck, who put in a lap time a full second faster than anyone else. Van Doninck came from a mediocre start, outside the top ten, for an outstanding fourth ahead of Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Jeremy Seewer who rode smart for fifth.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Max Anstie (GBR, Kawasaki), 25:32.320; 2. Petar Petrov (BUL, Kawasaki), +0:04.866; 3. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:07.716; 4. Brent Van doninck (BEL, Yamaha), +0:15.586; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:26.879; 6. Jordi Tixier (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:36.102; 7. Brian Bogers (NED, KTM), +0:36.979; 8. Ben Watson (GBR, KTM), +0:45.358; 9. Julien Lieber (BEL, Yamaha), +0:46.830; 10. Davy Pootjes (NED, KTM), +0:48.460

Gajser commits to Honda with multi-year HRC agreement

Honda Racing Corporation and Tim Gajser, the 18-year-old Slovenian MX2 star, have signed a multi-year agreement that will see Gajser stay with Honda until at least 2020.

Already under contract until the end of 2016, the new agreement will ensure that the increasingly successful partnership between Gajser and Honda Racing Corporation will continue for at least another five seasons.

One of the hottest prospects for the 2015 MX2 World Championship crown, Gajser started riding for the Honda Gariboldi Racing team in 2014. That same year he signed his first HRC agreement and claimed six Grand Prix podiums.

His first Grand Prix victory came at the MXGP of Trentino in Pietramurata in April 2015, and has since been followed by a further three triumphs which have catapulted him into the fight for the World Championship title.

Roger Harvey, HRC General Manager – MXGP

“Clearly we’re delighted to extend the mutual commitment between HRC and Tim and keep him on the Honda CRF for at least another five seasons. Given his performances this season, it’s no surprise that he was in high demand, and it shows how well the relationship between him, the team and HRC is working that he has committed for the next five years. It’s easy to forget that his first MX2 race win came only three months ago. Well before then he was clearly an outstanding talent, but it’s been great to see the way he’s developed with the Honda Gariboldi team and with the support of HRC to now be at the front of the World Championship, and at only 18 years old. We are in no doubt that with Tim Honda will win titles. The only question is how many.”

Tim Gajser, no.243

“It’s just amazing and I’m thankful to everyone at Honda, HRC and the Gariboldi team for this deal. Three years ago when I came here it was unbelievable to think of riding for Honda, and now I can say it’s a pleasure that I can ride with them and together we are getting the results. We work really hard together and I think we’ve improved a lot from last year, which was only our first in MX2. I’m really happy, and so is my family, and I think everybody in the team too. We are like one big family, working together really well and it’s paying off – the results are coming and everything is going so well. It’s a great feeling to be able to just go out there and have fun without having to think about where I will be the next season, and to stay with Honda is like a dream.”

KTM Racing extends contract with Claudio de Carli

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport Director and Claudio de Carli announce with pleasure that the very successful partnership between KTM Racing and itsRed Bull KTM Factory Racing MXGP Team Manager is being extended for a further four years.

Claudio de Carli and his highly competent team structure first came to KTM with the recruitment to the KTM Factory team of multi world championAntonio Cairoli in 2010. The cooperation has been both professional and successful, and Beirer said he was happy that this is now set to continue with an even stronger partnership in the coming seasons.

Pit Beirer: “Claudio is one of the most experienced and respected people in the MXGP paddock and our cooperation has rewarded us both with a lot of success. We are very happy that we can now develop our relationship even further. With Claudio and his team we have a group of very professional, experienced people, and this definitely puts us on track for even more success.”

Beirer said that de Carli brings with him an excellent, brand-new base camp facility in Rome, complete with its own professional MX track. “In addition, we have our main base here in Austria, where we produce all our Factory bikes, plus an improved and expanded practice facility in Belgium that will be ready for next season’s preparation. With Claudio’s team, and the best possible facilities and network, we are in excellent shape to prepare for future Motocross World Championships titles,” Beirer added.

Claudio De Carli also confirmed that he was very pleased to continue to work with KTM, saying: “We joined the KTM team in 2010, and for us it was a real honor and a recognition of the work done in previous years. In these six years, we have achieved great results, but the best reward has come from the opportunity to work and interact with a fantastic group, where the commitment to motorsport racing is always combined with a great passion and a positive determination to always improve, and to always enrich human relations. We appreciate this professionalism, competence and above all the human values of the KTM people who welcomed us. They have made us feel part of a big family. For this, and for the renewed honor to be part of the team for another four years, I want to thank KTM, and especially Pit Beirer.”

Love it or loath it, Lommel is set to host round 14

LOMMEL (Belgium), 29 July 2015 – This time last week our TV presenter Lisa Leyland welcomed you to the MXGP of Czech Republic with the line “welcome to round thirteen, everything that could have happened… has”. And like her, that is what we thought too, at least before Qualifying on Saturday commenced and Jeffrey Herlings, one rider whose luck couldn’t get any worse, put an end to his season. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing squad has confirmed that Jeffrey Herlings will not be returning to the gate this year, which means the FIM Motocross MX2 World Championship title is ready for the taking, once again.

With that said, it’s time to place your bets on who you think the 2015 MX2 world champion will be, and don’t forget that the MXGP season is also not yet over. So here we are in the unforgiving sand of Lommel for the fourteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

If you haven’t heard of Lommel, you have been living under a rock, it is one of the most widely recognized tracks in the world known for its brutal test in physical, mental and technical strength and also for its rounds of the FIM Motocross of Nations, in 1981 when USA won for the first time ever, and in 2012, where victory was claimed by the Germans.

Lommel had its first round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in 1990, and has since hosted ten rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship. With both of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s champions out, Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings, the only rider to line up this weekend with a grand prix win in Lommel is Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie who won MX2 last year.

All of the European Championship classes EMX250, 125, 300 and the Honda European Championship EMX150 will also be chucking on a set of scoop tires this weekend for yet another round of their championships.

Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre. The name almost says it all. The rookie is leading the championship by a massive eighty-eight points over fellow Frenchman Gautier Paulin. He has led the most laps, won the most races and has taken the most grand prix overalls. Just when you thought the sand would be his undoing, he rolled out in Kegums at the MXGP of Latvia and set the fastest lap of the race while in traffic and then gave everyone a walloping in race two for the win.

Speaking of Gautier Paulin, the Team HRC rider was mediocre last weekend but after his domination in the sand of Valkenswaard earlier this year, it would seem Lommel is more up his alley and could be his chance to chip at Febvre’s points lead. Meanwhile his team mate Evgeny Bobryshev should be able to move into third this weekend with the absence of Tony Cairoli. Bobby is also not too shabby in the sand and could be an overall threat.

And then there are the locals. Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle and Kevin Strijbos. For Desalle, it won’t be an easy race given he has just had seven weeks off the bike due to his knee and shoulder injuries but the Belgian has said he is just going to do his best and have fun, while how Strijbos will perform is anybody’s guess, but it’s safe to say he has a shot at the podium.

As will our newly nicknamed ‘Jereman’, Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Jeremy Van Horebeek who is working hard to reclaim the spots on the podium he so frequently occupied last year.

Another rider to watch in the sand is Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson. SS24 has proven on a number of occasions he is one of the main players in deep sand and is sure to come out swinging this weekend.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 507 points; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HON), 419 p.; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 416 p.; 4. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, HON), 389 p.; 5. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 360 p.; 6. Clement Desalle (BEL, SUZ), 331 p.; 7. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), 306 p.; 8. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 294 p.; 9. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, SUZ), 266 p.; 10. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, SUZ), 257 p.

2014 MXGP of Belgium, Lommel, MXGP Top 3

1. Antonio Cairoli

2. Ken de Dycker

3. Shaun Simpson

This is where everything gets exciting. Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod is tied with Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser for second in the MX2 Championship points chase. Both riders are only twenty-four points shy of Jeffrey Herlings which means that there is a good chance that one of them will come away with the red plate. Which of the two? It’s hard to say. Both have won three grand prix this year and neither have stood out in the sand, so it is definitely a hard one to call.

Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is just ten points shy of Guillod and Gajser, which means he is also in with a shot at taking away the red plate. That is good news for Jonass who admittedly loves the sand and is usually strong in it, as we saw in Latvia when he went 2 – 2 for second overall. The young Latvian said in the press conference last weekend, “I’m not looking at the championship. KTM didn’t hire me to win the world championship, they hired me to ride and take experience, so for me it’s not important, I just want to ride as good as I can in every race”.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier is looking forward to the sand having won the final race at the MXGP of Belgium in Lommel last year, while no one is looking forward to it more than Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie who waxed everyone in the sand of Kegums a few weekends ago and is the most recent MX2 grand prix of Belgium winner.

Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Julien Lieber is a known name in beach racing so we are confident he can put together some fast laps while fellow Belgian’s Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Brent Van Doninck and J-Tech Honda’s Jens Getteman could also throw a spanner in the works this weekend.

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 423 points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 399 p.; 3. Valentin Guillod (SUI, YAM), 399 p.; 4. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 389 p.; 5. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KAW), 370 p.; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, SUZ), 369 p.; 7. Max Anstie (GBR, KAW), 337 p.; 8. Julien Lieber (BEL, YAM), 305 p.; 9. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, HUS), 256 p.; 10. Benoit Paturel (FRA, YAM), 236 p.
