HERLINGS AND SACHA COENEN ARE THE KINGS OF KEGUMS AT THE MXGP OF LATVIA

KEGUMS (Latvia) 8 June 2025 – The tough, sandy, Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near the town of Kegums served up another classic day of MXGP racing for the eleventh round of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championships, the MXGP of Latvia!

Morning rain gave way to sunny skies for the afternoon’s Grand Prix action, with a little shower between the blocks of racing, but the moisture made its impact as the soft terrain got particularly heavy during the thirty-plus minute races, testing stamina and skill to the maximum!

In MXGP, the undisputed King of Kegums, Jeffrey Herlings, took his ninth overall victory at this venue, making it three years in a row that he has left here with the winner’s silverware!  It completed a perfect weekend for the Dutchman, although he was chased all the way by his fellow Red Bull KTM Factory Racing contender Lucas Coenen.  The Belgian made progress in his pursuit of Romain Febvre, although the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP Championship leader salvaged the day with yet another podium in third overall.

The MX2 class was once more wildly unpredictable, but at last in 2025 the speed of Sacha Coenen paid off to take his first Grand Prix victory of the season for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, although a last lap crash for his teammate Simon Längenfelder cost the German the overall win. Simon still retook the red plate in Latvia with second overall ahead of Kay de Wolf, who won the second race for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

As always, the Latvian sand saw its fair share of thrills and spills, and the tough circuit brought some truly hardcore Motocross action to keep the purists happy!

Saturday’s Qualifying Race winner Herlings continued his dominance straight from the morning warm-up, seven-tenths of a second faster than Febvre, while Glenn Coldenhoff was third quickest for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP.

The battle was on immediately for the lead between the factory KTM big guns, and it was Coenen who scored his eighth Fox Holeshot Award of the season by squeezing Herlings into the first turn. This briefly allowed Febvre into second, but “The Bullet” blasted through some deep sand to somehow go back around the Frenchman in the third corner, before Coenen made a small mistake outside of the next turn, losing traction and enabling the Dutch master to double-jump past the Belgian youngster. It was a vital move, as was an almost simultaneous pass from Brian Bogers, firing his Fantic Factory Racing MXGP machine to the inside of Febvre to grab third position before the start of the first full lap!

Herlings tried to break away at the front, and the chase was on! Febvre, however, was simply unable to make a move on Bogers, and the Dutchman’s countryman and teammate Glenn Coldenhoff, after starting fifth, got close to the battle as the series leader’s efforts were constantly thwarted!

Behind the leading five, Ruben Fernandez was holding sixth for Honda HRC, while MRT Racing Team Beta’s Ben Watson made his best start of the year to run solid in seventh! The third Fantic Factory Racing MXGP rider Andrea Bonacorsi started eighth ahead of KTM Kosak Racing’s Roan van de Moosdijk and Calvin Vlaanderen on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP machine.

Try as he might, Febvre could not get past Bogers, who was riding as a true sand specialist should, and ultimately the Frenchman dropped his machine in the second corner after the finish line, dropping him to seventh behind Watson on lap eleven!  Two laps later, the two top Fantic riders encountered the stricken TEM JP253 KTM Racing rider Jan Pancar in the track after the finish line jump, and as Bogers went to the outside, the chasing Coldenhoff went to the inside, taking third from his teammate in the process!

Further round the lap, Febvre got back past Watson, and Bonacorsi also nipped past the Beta rider to claim seventh at the flag. Fernandez then pulled a stunning pass by jumping long in front of the fans to get the better of Bogers.  This left the Dutchman in front of Febvre again, and to his eternal frustration, the Kawasaki man still could not pass him, and he had to settle for sixth.

Behind Bonacorsi and Watson, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Jago Geerts made a charge in the closing laps to pass Vlaanderen, then Van de Moosdijk to claim ninth at the finish.

Coenen, who had set the fastest lap of the race on lap two in pursuit of Herlings, got to within a second of “The Bullet”, and nearly took the lead when the Dutchman missed an inside rut on a deep left-hander! Ultimately Herlings held on for a 1.3 second margin of victory over Coenen, with Coldenhoff third but 56 seconds behind them! Fernandez and Bogers rounded out the top five.  Herlings’ 16th race victory at Kegums lifted him up to ninth in the Championship ahead of Jeremy Seewer, who finished 16th for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team.

Despite a small rain shower at the end of the first race, the sun had come out to dry the track and make it considerably faster in the second race. Once again, Coenen got the jump into turn one over Herlings, but this time “The Bullet” worked his magic immediately, carving across the front of his younger stablemate to lead into the second corner and immediately make the break away from the front.

Coenen managed to hold Febvre at bay, who in turn had to fight off the attentions of Bonacorsi, with Fernandez and Geerts completing the top six at the end of the first full lap.

Maxime Renaux had taken a much better start than race one, when he had to battle for just a 13th place finish for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, and he had Coldenhoff and his teammate Vlaanderen behind him, while the crowd made some noise for Mairis Pumpurs, who repeated his Qualifying Race start to run in the top ten again for the Motosports Racing Team!

Fernandez made a blistering pass around the outside of Bonacorsi for fourth on lap two, then Geerts also moved past the Italian through the same section two laps later.  The Belgian, winner of three MX2 GPs around Kegums, was on a charge that took him past Fernandez for fourth on lap seven!  Bonacorsi was able to get back past the Spaniard on lap 11, putting Geerts, Bonacorsi, and Fernandez in positions three to six until the flag, although Renaux looked to have got past the Honda man over a jump, but clipped his rear wheel instead and hit the ground, losing seventh to Coldenhoff.  Vlaanderen came home in ninth, and Brent van Doninck crossed the line in tenth, only to lose five positions for a post-race noise test on his JM Racing Honda.

Bogers had a worse start this time and finished 13th to place ninth overall ahead of Vlaanderen, while Ben Watson, also with a poor second race start, fought to 11th before being promoted by Van Doninck’s penalty, and collected his best overall finish yet for Beta in eighth. Bonacorsi claimed seventh overall, Geerts sixth, and Fernandez fifth on the return from his early exit at the German GP.

Febvre got close to Coenen for second at around the halfway point, but the Belgian proved equal to the task of keeping his title rival behind him, and the red plate holder had to console himself with just pipping Coldenhoff for the podium by a single point!  Lucas was second overall for the fourth GP in a row, putting him just 26 points behind Febvre in the Championship.

There was no catching the King of Kegums, however, as Jeffrey Herlings completed his perfect 1-1-1 weekend to take GP win #109, his ninth win at the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter, equalling his best record at any single circuit, as he has also won nine GPs at the Dutch venue of Valkenswaard.  How many more can Herlings add to his tally this season? It’s going to make for some thrilling racing to find out!

Jeffrey Herlings: “Let’s repeat it nine more times, eh? If only it were that simple! I’m really thankful for the win. Lucas pushed hard in both races, so credit to him as well, those guys are riding really strong. I'm happy to come out on top and looking forward to the next race. We’ll try to keep the momentum going, but it won’t be easy because everyone’s improving. We just keep doing our best, thank you!”

Lucas Coenen: “It was a good weekend. Two solid races, 2-2 for second overall, and good championship points. In the second race, I had a decent start but Jeffrey got by me and I struggled to find my flow. The track was tricky and I made a few mistakes. Still, there are positives, we’ve got another podium, we know what to work on, and we’ll keep building from here.”

Romain Febvre: “Tough weekend. In the first race I was running fourth and fighting for third, but the track was tough. I got too close, clipped a rear wheel and went down. That cost me a lot. Second race was better, I was up front, battling with the lead group. I gave it everything but just couldn’t make the pass. We’ll regroup and come back stronger at the next one in the UK.”

As with every practice session here at Kegums, the mercurial Sacha Coenen was clearly the quickest in morning warm-up, lapping 1.8 seconds faster than Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider Liam Everts and Honda HRC rookie Valerio Lata.

Without doubt Coenen is the most prolific starter in the class, and he extended his lead in the Fox Holeshot Award standings with his eighth of the year ahead of Längenfelder, as Everts and De Wolf disputed the top five positions with Kawasaki Racing Team MX2 ace Mathis Valin.

Oriol Oliver got in the mix for Gabriel SS24 KTM Factory Juniors, but after passing both De Wolf and Valin on the first full lap the Spaniard dropped the bike in a deep corner and had to fight up from eighth.  De Wolf then also fell down the order, as the crowd erupted thanks to a committed pass from home hero Karlis Reisulis, who carved his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 bike underneath the WZ-Racing KTM of Quentin Prugnières to take over fifth place on lap two!

Coming to Latvia with the red plate, although he lost in on Saturday, was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s former World Champion Andrea Adamo, and he started poorly in race one, at the edge of the top ten with Reisulis’ teammate Thibault Benistant and the Monster Energy Triumph Racing machine of Camden McLellan rounding out the initial top ten.

Although the new red plate holder got close to the teenage Belgian on occasions, the entire top five of Coenen, Längenfelder, Everts, Valin, and Reisulis held their positions until the very last lap, when a charging McLellan broke Latvian hearts with a pass on Reisulis in front of the packed banks of fans!  A couple of further mistakes cost De Wolf seventh position to Benistant, also on the final lap, while the other Monster Energy Triumph of Guillem Farres worked up to ninth ahead of Prugnières.

After a small rain shower but a lot of extensive work on the circuit before race two, the Fox Holeshot Award was narrowly won by Längenfelder, by maybe a tyre’s depth from Coenen! As the German sprinted away out in front, Benistant, Farres, De Wolf, and Everts fought over the next few positions through the opening set of corners, with the Frenchman taking third from the Spaniard.  Oliver held seventh from Reisulis, McLellan, and the JM Racing Honda of David Braceras. Lata, a non-scorer with crash damage in race one, was out early again on an unfortunate zero-score weekend for the Italian rookie.

De Wolf made good early progress this time, railing around the outside of Farres as the Triumph rider nearly fell on the double jump alongside the start straight.  Three laps later and the Champ was past Benistant for third, and he stalked Coenen until he was able to make an inside move to take second on lap 14, with just two minutes left on the clock!

Benistant would hold on to fourth to claim fifth overall, behind Everts who took fourth overall with a last lap pass on Farres.  That would have been for a podium spot if it weren’t for events elsewhere!

McLellan passed Oliver for seventh at half distance, and they both stayed there until the flag. Adamo and Valin fought back from mid-pack starts to round out the top ten, with the Italian finishing tenth overall behind Reisulis. Farres was eighth overall behind Valin, and McLellan took sixth on his 21st birthday weekend!

There was late drama at the front, however, as Längenfelder got cross-rutted on his final trip through the waves, swerving off-track and crashing into the grass! Although he was able to get going just as Coenen went past, it left Kay de Wolf to pick up his first race win since Lugo nearly a month ago, taking the podium from his teammate Everts in the process! Längenfelder would have to console himself with second overall and a bolstered Championship lead of 27 points over Adamo, with De Wolf ten further back.

For the second year running, however, victory in Latvia belonged to Sacha Coenen, which was just reward for his astonishing pace throughout the weekend.  You really could tell when he was going past just from the exhaust note alone!  His third career GP win lifted him back above Benistant into fifth in the points standings, 30 behind Everts and 89 behind De Wolf.

The series has a weekend off from here before reconvening in the United Kingdom for the MXGP of Great Britain at the fabled Matterley Basin venue in England. A completely different challenge to Kegums for the riders brings more excitement and unpredictability! See you out there!

Sacha Coenen: “It feels really good to be back on the top step of the podium. It was a solid weekend. Just in qualifying I had a little collision with my teammate, but that’s racing. We got through the races with good starts and strong riding, and we’re happy to leave here with the overall win. Looking forward to keeping this momentum going for the rest of the season.”

Simon Längenfelder: “It was good... until it wasn’t. I’ll definitely try to never make that mistake again. I had good starts, good speed, everything was there just one mistake too many in that final race. Still, second overall and I leave with the red plate and extend the gap, so that’s a positive. But yeah, it could have been much better.”

Kay de Wolf: “I was still struggling with a lot of pain from last week and the recovery just wasn’t fast enough. I kept crashing and hitting the same shoulder, which made it a really tough weekend. But in the second race, I dug deep and gave it everything. We’re not out of this fight and we’ll keep pushing to the end. Big thanks to the team for standing behind me and doing all they can.”

HERLINGS AND LÄNGENFELDER HOLD THE QUALIFYING KEYS TO KEGUMS AT THE MXGP OF LATVIA

KEGUMS (Latvia) 7 June 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship kick-started its second half today with the Qualifying Races for round 11 – the MXGP of Latvia at the sprawling Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near Kegums!

Yesterday’s rain gave way to sunny skies today, and the initially heavy going kept drying out to make for a fast, sub-two-minute lap time around the sandy Baltic circuit, for the very fastest that is.

The winner in MXGP, for the first time in a Qualifying Race in 2025, was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend Jeffrey Herlings. With a rare Holeshot from the first gate pick, “The Bullet” held off a charge from fellow factory KTM racer Lucas Coenen, who in turn had to defend second place from Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Championship leader Romain Febvre in a thrillingly close encounter!

After a chaotic start to the MX2 Qualifying Race, the Championship leader’s red plate was once again claimed by Simon Längenfelder, as the German took the race win for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing after a clear Holeshot left him free from multiple crashes in the first two corners! Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 duo Thibault Benistant and home hero Karlis Reisulis filled the rest of the top three, with the Latvian building up the atmosphere around the Kegums circuit!

With the weather possibly being a factor in tomorrow’s races, the Saturday appetiser suggests that we’re in for some tasty racing on Grand Prix Sunday!

It was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing who took the fastest laps in both Free & Time Practice sessions earlier in the day, with Lucas Coenen claiming top spot in the morning, but it was Jeffrey Herlings who flexed his recovering muscles to outpace the teenager by just over half a second in the afternoon.  Fantic Factory Racing MXGP star Brian Bogers was third fastest, ahead of his teammate Glenn Coldenhoff and incoming red plate holder Romain Febvre for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP.

Herlings used his pole position to take his customary inside gate position, and although Coenen moved towards his line, the Belgian then ran wide, allowing Herlings and Honda HRC’s Ruben Fernandez to fire past him!

A few corners later and Coenen, who had to hold his line against the fast-starting Fantic Factory Racing MXGP rider Andrea Bonacorsi, dived to the inside of Fernandez to take over second and charge after Herlings!

Febvre, meanwhile, moved past Bonacorsi and then Coldenhoff to finish the first full lap in fourth position, taking until lap three to demote Fernandez from third. He set his sights on the KTM riders ahead and the chase was on!

The three Fantics of Coldenhoff, Bonacorsi, and Bogers held fifth to seventh positions for the entire race, but behind them it was local sensation Mairis Pumpurs who got the crowd into it, completing the first lap in eighth on his Motosports Racing Team Husqvarna! He held on there until lap five, when sand-loving Brit Ben Watson got past for MRT Racing Team Beta.

The home hero faded back to 17th as the rest of the MXGP elite showed their stamina and tenacity. Watson was passed on lap eight by Brent van Doninck, who took his first Qualifying Race points of the year in eighth, with Jeremy Seewer taking the final point for Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX-Team, behind Watson, making it six manufacturers in the top ten!

A no-score for Maxime Renaux, suffering with a poor start for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, means that the Frenchman has lost third in the series to Coldenhoff. Fernandez, returning from a big crash which knocked him out of the previous round in Germany at the start of race one, must have been relieved with a solid race to fourth which sees him now level on points with his injured teammate Tim Gajser.

All eyes were on the battle up front, however, as Febvre looked ready to pounce on his main Championship rival Coenen, and their pace brought them to the rear wheel of Herlings! Coenen briefly broke the Frenchman’s charge, but couldn’t pull the trigger on the leading KTM, allowing the Kawasaki man to make one last desperate lunge on the final lap!

Febvre wasn’t able to make it pay, however, and had to settle for the loss of another point to the teenager, cutting his lead in the Championship to 35 points.  Herlings’ victory was his first on a Saturday since Indonesia in July last year, and puts him just 16 points behind Seewer for ninth in the Championship. Incidentally, he is only 99 points behind Coldenhoff for third in the Championship.  A gap worth watching!

Will “The Bullet” move on to take his ninth GP win on the Latvian sand tomorrow, or will the Championship leaders find an answer for him?  You need to join us for Grand Prix Sunday to find out!

Jeffrey Herlings: "It’s really good to come off a win last weekend and to take pole today. Saturday is usually a tough day for me, but I managed to get it done in qualifying, even with the rain overnight and yesterday. Let’s make the best of tomorrow and try to be back on the podium."

The timesheets from the Free and Time Practice sessions earlier in the day showed wildly different results in the ultra-competitive 250cc division, but there was one constant – Sacha Coenen was significantly the fastest man on track for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing whenever he went for a quick lap! Two and a half seconds clear of Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Guillem Farres in the morning, Coenen only had Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammates Kay de Wolf and Liam Everts just within a second of him in the afternoon sessions that determined the gate picks!

Längenfelder absolutely nailed the start to control the first corner, while Coenen clipped the front wheel of Farres, causing a chain reaction that also brought down the Spaniard’s teammate Camden McLellan, De Wolf, the WZ-Racing KTM of Maxime Grau, and the Gabriel SS24 KTM Factory Juniors machine of Oriol Oliver!

That wasn’t the end of the carnage, however, as Coenen tried a cutback move on Längenfelder into turn two, and underestimated how soft the dirt was! He stood his bike on its nose and it knocked over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s new red plate holder Andrea Adamo, Honda HRC’s Valerio Lata, and Everts!

Reisulis got the crowd noise up as he emerged in second ahead of Benistant, and briefly looked like challenging Längenfelder!  TM Moto CRD Motosport rider Julius Mikula held fourth spot ahead of JM Honda Racing’s David Braceras, although Cas Valk stuck his Van Venrooy KTM Racing machine under the Spaniard to take fifth on the first full lap.  The Dutchman was also able to quickly pass Mikula for fourth, leaving the Czech rider to deal with the oncoming pack!

Mathis Valin had survived the first lap for Kawasaki Racing Team MX2, and hustled past Mikula for fifth, but Everts and De Wolf had been able to get up quickly, and were up to the Frenchman’s rear wheel by lap five, Everts making a beautiful pass around the outside of the rookie to claim fifth place almost immediately!  De Wolf wasn’t able to make a pass happen quickly, however, and only got up to sixth with three laps to go.

Behind Valin in seventh, Spaniards Oliver and Farres got back up to place eighth and ninth, but Mikula was able to hold off a tattered and torn-up Adamo to secure the final point.  Once more the red plate appeared to be a poisoned chalice in MX2, and the Italian lost the series lead as well as a little bit of skin in the collision with Coenen, who came home in 13th behind birthday boy McLellan.

With the crowd urging him to stay ahead of Benistant, Reisulis pushed the pace on, even though he lost second to the Frenchman on lap eight. That result puts Benistant back up to fifth in the series ahead of Coenen.  The local fans were ecstatic with Reisulis’ best result by far this season, although he only had a second to spare over Valk by the flag, as the Dutchman celebrated his best Qualifying Race in MX2 to date.

Längenfelder marched to a clear 11-second victory, his second Qualifying Race win of the year, and will fit that discarded #27 red plate from last week back onto his machine for tomorrow, as he holds a seven-point advantage over Adamo, with De Wolf another 26 markers back!

Look for those two to come out swinging for revenge tomorrow, however, as will Coenen and all of the others, as the MX2 class continues to keep us guessing in 2025!

Do not miss the next thrilling day of MXGP action from the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter tomorrow!

Simon Längenfelder: "It was like a cat-and-mouse game one guy takes it, the other brings it back. I got the holeshot and I think there was a crash behind me in the second corner, so I had some free space. I found some nice lines and just enjoyed myself out there."

MXGP OF LATVIA IN KEGUMS BEGINS WITH OFFICIAL OPENING PRESS CONFERENCE

KEGUMS (Latvia) 7 June 2025 — The 2025 MXGP of Latvia officially launched with an impressive Opening Press Conference held at the iconic Ogre Central Library, a celebrated cultural landmark and one of the top four libraries in the world in 2022. The setting was a fitting stage for what is shaping up an impressive round of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Attended by Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM / CMS Director Antonio Alia, MXGP of Latvia organizer Kristers Serģis, Ministry of Education and Science Aleksandrs Samoilovs, President of the Latvian Motorsport Federation Mārtiņš Lazdovskis and top riders such as Red Plate Romain Febvre, Lucas Coenen, Simon Längenfelder, and the home heroes Kārlis and Jānis Reišulis, the event highlighted Latvia’s growing importance on the global motocross map.

David Luongo:“It’s always a pleasure to return to Latvia, especially here in Kegums where we see such a strong collaboration between the local organizer, the federation, and the government. We’re at the halfway point of the season, and despite the unpredictable weather, the racing has been fantastic. This is the beauty of motocross, it’s an outdoor sport, and we embrace the challenges it brings. What’s important is that every organizer so far has shown incredible passion and professionalism to deliver top-level events, and Latvia is no exception. It’s also great to see how the sport here contributes to tourism, education, and youth development. The local investment into young riders and infrastructure is paying off and that’s something really encouraging.”

Antonio Alia:“This first half of the season has been intense and, at times, difficult due to the weather, but that’s part of what makes motocross unique. It’s a sport that tests not only the riders but also the organizers. What we’ve seen this year is tremendous resilience. Coming back to Kegums is always a highlight. The teamwork here between Infront, the organizers, the Latvian Federation, and public authorities is outstanding. From a sporting perspective, it’s remarkable how much talent Latvia has produced given its size, this shows that the right structure, commitment, and vision can make a big impact on the world stage.”

Also expressing the importance of the MXGP event were Kristers Serģis, who said, “This marks our 11th year hosting the MXGP of Latvia, and every year we strive to improve. Our goal is always to offer a dynamic, exciting track that challenges the riders and entertains the fans”; then Mārtiņš Lazdovskis highlighted “Right now, Latvia is enjoying what I believe is a golden generation in motocross. We are a small country, yes, but we’ve proven that talent, ambition, and proper development programs can elevate us to the top”; and finally Aleksandrs Samoilovs, emphasised that “It’s not just about sport, it’s about what motocross represents for our country. That’s the legacy events like this create".

The riders invited then followed in the Opening Press Conference by giving their feel for the event and for the season so far:

Romain Febvre: “It’s been a strong season so far. I had a solid winter preparation, and that really helped me to be consistent from the very beginning. I’ve been scoring good points, staying on the podium, and leading the championship at the halfway mark is a good feeling, but the job isn’t done. We still have many races to go, and I know I can improve in some areas. Coming back to Kegums is always special. I like this track; it’s always evolving, and even with the rain, the surface usually holds up well. I’m looking forward to racing here again and keeping the momentum going.”

Lucas Coenen: “It’s been a learning year for me—stepping up to MXGP is a big jump, especially with the power and setup of the bike. But race by race, I’m adapting better. I’m happy with how things are going, especially sitting second in the championship right now. Kegums is one of the tracks I really enjoy. I’ve had good results here before, and I like the mix of sandy and hard soil, it suits my style. It’s great to be back and have the chance to build more strong memories at this GP.”

Simon Längenfelder: “After five years with GASGAS, switching to KTM has been a new chapter, and so far it’s been going really well. The team put in a lot of work over the winter to give us the best bike possible, and we’ve made big steps forward with the engine and suspension. I had the red plate last weekend, which was a proud moment, but I’m not getting carried away. There are still many races left and I’m just trying to focus on riding at the front each weekend. The goal is to stay consistent and keep fighting for the title.”

Kārlis Reišulis: It’s always special to come back and race in Latvia. Even though I’ve been traveling and racing a lot internationally, this is still home. The atmosphere here is great, family, fans, local food, it just makes the weekend extra meaningful. I haven’t ridden Kegums that much recently, but I know it’s a tough, physical track and I’m excited for the challenge. I’ll give it everything for the home fans.”

Jānis Reišulis: “I’m feeling fully ready for this weekend. It’s been a tough season in terms of qualifying, but I’ve learned a lot through training and racing. This home GP means a lot to me, I’ve raced here before and the track is always a bit different, but that just adds to the excitement. I’m focused and motivated to show what I can do in front of the Latvian crowd.”

Later on Friday, the Blåkläder Start Practice sessions for MXGP and MX2 riders saw full-throttle intensity as teams fine-tuned their bike setups and starts techniques in preparation for the sandy surface of Kegums. These key start tests not only gave riders an early feel for the grip and lines but also provided fans with a first glimpse of the speed and precision expected across the two days of racing.

.

As the weekend approaches, all attention now shifts to Kegums, where the world’s best motocross athletes will battle it out on the demanding Latvian sand. Known for its technical layout and deep ruts, Kegums is set to deliver another thrilling Grand Prix, adding to Latvia’s proud legacy in the sport.

WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE – TUNE IN TO THE MXGP OF LATVIA!

KEGUMS (Latvia) 6 June 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship enjoys a sandy start to the second half of its season with round eleven this weekend at the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near Kegums, for the MXGP of Latvia!

The MXGP class will continue with its “Veteran vs Teenager” confrontation, as Romain Febvre continues to lead the series from Lucas Coenen, the Belgian kid who is nearly 15 years younger than the determined Frenchman!  However, a wild card may be thrown into the deck, as the return to winning form of Jeffrey Herlings last weekend in Germany, means that “The Bullet” is a genuine contender once more, and never more than at Kegums, where he has won more than anyone else – a massive eight GP wins in total!

The MX2 division saw the Championship leader’s red plate change hands yet again, as Andrea Adamo overtook Simon Laengenfelder at the German’s home GP, but the gap is only three points between them, and reigning Champion Kay de Wolf, the 2023 winner here, will be looking forward to clawing back some points on his favourite terrain! Beware the speed of Sacha Coenen, however, who took his first career GP win here last year and will be out to repeat the feat!

Below you can find the full list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Latvia, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

As always, MXGP fans can follow the races LIVE throughout the weekend. All you need to do is log onto www.MXGP-TV.com on Saturday and Monday, from wherever you are in the world.  Every round this season will also feature live screening of Saturday’s Time Practice sessions, for those who don’t want to miss a grain of sand fly from the rear wheels of the MXGP elite!  Come and join us for a great weekend of Motocross action!

TIME TO SHIFT SOME SAND AT THE MXGP OF LATVIA

KEGUMS (Latvia) 4 June 2025 – After a long line of hard-pack, clay-based circuits to round out the first half of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship, round eleven takes the series even further east for the third weekend of action in a row, to the sands of the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter near the town of Kegums! It’s the MXGP of Latvia, giving the riders a chance to show off their sand-riding skills and prove their worth in the soft stuff!

This will be the 20th MXGP event held at this venue, the only one in Latvia to host a Motocross World Championship event on two wheels. We have been coming here every year since 2009 if you include the 2014 Motocross of Nations, won by Team France, and even raced here three times in eight days during the COVID-affected 2020 season. Belgian Sven Breugelmans won the first World Championship event at Kegums, an MX3 GP, in 2005, and other past winners include Antonio Cairoli, Clement Desalle, and Ken Roczen.

The most successful exponent of the shifting Kegums sands is none other than Jeffrey Herlings, and the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend has won more here than at any other venue in the current calendar, with eight GP victories spanning from MX2 in 2010 to each of the last two years in the MXGP class.  This round comes straight after his first GP win of the season at Teutschenthal, and for sure “The Bullet” will be rubbing his hands at the prospect of more glory in Latvia!

At the top of the Championship table sits Romain Febvre, who holds a 36-point advantage for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP over chief chaser Lucas Coenen, who has finished second overall at each of the last three GPs for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  The fight for third is closer still, as just four points separate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Maxime Renaux and Glenn Coldenhoff, who is fourth for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP. A big disappointment for the local fans will be that Pauls Jonass will be unable to compete at his home GP for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP after hurting himself at Teutschenthal for the second year in a row!

The battle for the MX2 World Championship is closer still, as 2023 World Champion Andrea Adamo holds just a three-point lead over fellow Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot Simon Laengenfelder, while reigning Champion Kay de Wolf made some ground back in Germany to lie 31 points off the lead for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.  Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Karlis Reisulis will be hoping to lift himself from 14th in the series for his home fans in his first MX2 GP on home sand!

After a weekend off, the EMX250 European Championship returns for its eighth round, and these races might see the most enthusiastic fan support of all, as Latvian rider Janis Reisulis leads the series for VHR VRT Yamaha Official EMX250, having won half of the 14 races so far. He enjoys a 25-point lead over JM Honda Racing’s Noel Zanocz, who won last time at Ernée and in EMX125 last year at Kegums! Spaniard Francisco Garcia is currently third for Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki.

The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing series has its ninth round at Kegums, and Racestore KTM Factory Juniors rider Nicolò Alvisi leads the Championship from MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 pilot Mano Faure, who won in Germany, while Filippo Mantovani holds third for the KTM Beddini Racing Team.  Home supporters will cheer for the JK Racing Yamaha of Jekabs Kubulins, who is seventh in the series with a race win back at Cozar and a second behind Faure in the most recent outing in Germany.

The deceptively difficult Zelta Zirgs Motocenter is bound to throw up a rollercoaster of racing for the MXGP of Latvia – don’t be missing it!

The MXGP World Championship is currently a battle between two vastly different riders. The red plate is still fixed to the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP machine of Romain Febvre, looking to break the record for the longest gap between a rider’s first two world titles as he strives to add this year’s crown to his 2015 Championship victory.  His pursuer, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, is nearly 15 years his junior, aiming to break the record for the youngest world title winner in the MXGP class since its inception.

Neither rider has tasted GP victory at Kegums before, as Febvre has finished third overall four times, only bettered by his result of second in 2019. Coenen also has a best of second, which he achieved in last year’s MX2 Grand Prix with a 2-3 scorecard. He also finished second in race two of the 2023 GP, but never raced here in the EMX classes.  Febvre did at least win two individual races at Kegums back in 2015 & ’16, but has yet to achieve that on a Kawasaki.

Behind the leading pair, early red plate holder Maxime Renaux has fought through injury to hold third place for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, just four points ahead of Fantic Factory Racing MXGP team leader Glenn Coldenhoff. Both riders have achieved success around the Latvian circuit, with Maxime taking a maximum score in his title-winning 2021 MX2 season, while Glenn has won on two occasions in the MXGP class, back in 2015 with Suzuki and in the first of the three 2020 GPs here. It is in fact the only circuit where he has claimed two GP victories, and he was even second in the MX2 class, behind Briton Tommy Searle, in the 2014 Motocross of Nations here.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP star Jago Geerts has also enjoyed victory in Latvia with three GP wins in the MX2 class, but the rider who stands out as the King of Kegums is Jeffrey Herlings. Always riding for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, this Saturday will be 20 days short of 15 years ago that he took only his second ever GP victory here back in 2010, and he added wins in 2013 and ’16 in MX2, then in MXGP in 2017, ’18, ’20, ’23, and ’24. His 15 individual race wins is over double that of the next best, which is Antonio Cairoli with seven! Jeffrey’s win at Teutschenthal put him up to tenth in this year’s Championship.

Apart from Coldenhoff, the only other rider lining up this weekend who was also at Kegums in the 2014 MXoN is Jeremy Seewer, who is currently ninth in the series for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team, and has stood on the Latvian podium on two occasions.  A privateer to watch for could be Roan van de Moosdijk of the KTM Kosak Team, as he finished second overall here in MX2 in 2023, and took a double race victory in EMX250 back in 2019.

One of the most popular GPs on the calendar with the riders, especially those that love sand, the MXGP class in Latvia is bound to generate some spectacular race action!

Once more in MX2, the hot potato that is the Championship leader’s red plate has been passed to another rider, and it goes from one Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine to another, in the shape of Andrea Adamo, who has surprised everyone this year by being a far more prolific winner than he was during his title season in 2023, especially considering he didn’t win a single Grand Prix as defending Champion last year!

The Italian, with four GP wins from the first ten, still holds only a slender three-point lead over Simon Laengenfelder, and with the entire second half of the season to go, there is all to play for!  Neither rider has a great history at Kegums, however, with Laengenfelder the best of the pair with third overall last season, and Adamo had a best of fourth overall in 2023.

It is clearly more of a GP for the sand riders, and Kay de Wolf definitely fits that category! Taking a maximum here in 2023, and a first race win in 2024 before crashes dropped him to ninth in race two, he could be considered the favourite for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, and needs the points after falling to 31 behind Adamo at the top.  His teammate Liam Everts came home fifth overall last year, and sixth the year before that. Since owning the red plate after round three, he is looking to rebuild from fourth place in the standings and 89 points down on Adamo.

Behind him in the points is Sacha Coenen, who took his first ever GP victory here last year for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and even after losing the GP win to a second race crash in Germany, he still moved up in the standings and undeniably has the pace to be victorious again at the Zelta Zirgs Motocenter!

The rider he passed in the Championship is Thibault Benistant, who bizarrely has only scored one podium finish here in MX2, back in 2023. Bizarrely, because he won all three rounds of EMX250 held at Kegums in 2020, as well as an EMX125 race in 2018! Now sixth in the series for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, the Frenchman will be looking to find some of that old form in his last race here on a 250!

Behind him in the standings is Camden McLellan, who loves a bit of sand and will be looking to get back to the sharp end for Monster Energy Triumph Racing, especially after his teammate Guillem Farres took a race win in Germany!  Valerio Lata won a race here in EMX250 last year, and is starting to come good for Honda HRC, for whom he might be the only rider in either class as Ferruccio Zanchi and MXGP rider Ruben Fernandez are being checked for fitness this week, with Tim Gajser already out of course.

Van Venrooy KTM Racing’s lone wolf Cas Valk is ninth in the Championship and has many good memories of Kegums, with an EMX250 overall here last year, and an EMX125 victory in 2022! The top non-factory rider in the series will be out to do some damage after a disappointing couple of GPs.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Karlis Reisulis will be the focus of the patriotic Latvian fans and looking to pick his season up from 14th in the Championship. He has showed top ten pace but struggled to put it all together on occasion. The fans will be urging him to greater things!

With ten separate riders having taken the chequered flag in either Qualifying or GP races this season, MX2 could bring us any result imaginable this weekend, so let’s see what the Baltic battles bring us as we start the second half of the campaign in style!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 466 Pts; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, KTM), 463 Points;  3. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 435 Points; 4. Liam Everts (BEL, HUS), 377 Pts; 5. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 342 Pts; 6. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 337 Pts; 7. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI), 294 Pts; 8. Valerio Lata (ITA, HON), 265 Pts; 9. Cas Valk (NED, KTM), 231 Pts; 10. Ferruccio Zanchi (ITA, HON), 220 Pts;.
