MXGP heads for Maggiora

MAGGIORA (Italy), 10 June 2015 - Maggiora park is used to the kind of pandemonium that lies ahead this coming weekend with the ninth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, MXGP of Italy set to take place.

As the ninth round of eighteen, this grand venue is the centerpiece of the most thrilling season of motocross ever. While the track dates way back to 1966 with its first ever round of the FIM Motocross World Championship taking place in that year, it is actually most famous for the 1986 FIM Motocross of Nations where team USA won with their “dream team” Ricky Johnson, David Bailey and Johnny O’Mara. The 1986 Motocross of Nations hits a soft spot for many motocross enthusiasts, which makes MXGP of Italy the tribute to that amazing event with a lot of the teams and riders running retro themes.

Also adding to the action this weekend, the seventh round of the European Championship EMX125 will take place with Spaniard Jorge Prado leading the way, as will the third round of the EMX300 with Belgian Yentel Martens as the front runner.

Another hard surfaced and heavily elevated circuit could work in favor of the new kid on the block, the deserving MXGP of France winner Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre. Febvre is obviously working hard and well with his Italian based team who are likely to do something special here in Maggiora for their home grand prix.

Despite being one of the most magnificent tracks in the world, Maggiora was off the calendar for a good fourteen years before retuning in 2013. When it finally returned, it was Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin causing the upset that day with a narrow victory over the favorite Antonio Cairoli. This season we are still waiting for GP21 to come out of his shell and challenge for race wins, while the surprise lies in his teammate Evgeny Bobryshev who appears to be working his way toward the to the top step.

The bar for crowd enthusiasm was set last year when Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Antonio Cairoli took one of the most hair-raising victories in history. We had never seen a crowd as pumped for their hero as they were for Tony that day and with Tony looking more focused than ever as he tries to chop down the points lead of Max Nagl, we could be in for another “home town hero impresses in Italy” situation.

As for the red plate holder Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl, he still has the most MXGP overall victories this year and continues to ride smart and consistent. With Germany being the next round of the FIM Motocross World Championship after Maggiora this weekend, it would be amazing if Max could hold onto the red plate for his home fans.

In terms of the local riders, it will be a fun and exciting event for DP19 Racing Yamaha’s David Philippaerts, as well as TM Racing Factory Team’s Davide Guarneri who could be making his return after the concussion he suffered in Matterley Basin. Rounding out the Italians in MXGP is Team Assomotor Honda’s Alessandro Lupino.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 332 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 313 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, SUZ), 291 p.; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 282 p.; 5. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HON), 252 p.; 6. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, HON), 247 p.; 7. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), 169 p.; 8. Todd Waters (AUS, HUS), 138 p.; 9. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, SUZ), 134 p.; 10. Ken de Dycker (BEL, KTM), 133 p.

Since the return to the calendar, after a fourteen-year absence, Maggiora has been good to The Bullet Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who has dominated the MX2 class there for the last two years. Herlings, as always, will be a safe bet for the win, although we have come to learn that it is never a given.

This weekend will be dependent on Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser’s roller coaster pattern. When it’s up, it’s up! But with every up is a down and the Slovenian just has to learn what he can and enjoy the ride.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier is doing exactly what he did last year when he won the FIM Motocross MX2 world title. Consistency. Consistency. Consistency. Another podium will give the Frenchman his sixth consecutive.

If anyone can challenge Jeffrey fairly it would Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod. Guillod has been the breath of fresh air to MX2 this year so we hope he brings that flamboyant style and phenomenal speed to Maggiora this weekend!

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 358 points; 2. Valentin Guillod (SUI, YAM), 246 p.; 3. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 245 p.; 4. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KAW), 229 p.; 5. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, HUS), 218 p.; 6. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 209 p.; 7. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, SUZ), 208 p.; 8. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, KAW), 205 p.; 9. Julien Lieber (BEL, YAM), 184 p.; 10. GP riders prepare

Last weekend many GP riders got in some extra practice for the Grand Prix of Italy this coming weekend at the Maggiora circuit. From England, to France to Belgium some of the best GP riders put on their racing faces and prepared for heading down to Italy for what is expected to be a classic GP.

At the former GP circuit of Kester in Belgium Christophe Charlier scored victory with 2-7-2 results. It would be the 50th anniversary of the circuit and the last time motocross would be held at this facility.

The 24MX Honda Racing rider led home a bunch of GP riders including Ken De Dycker, Jeremy Van Horebeek, Kevin Strijbos, Jordi Tixier, Pauls Jonass and Tyla Rattray.

“I’m proud to be on the winners list! It took a bit of time to get used to the track but I had so much fun to come and race here. We’ve been trying some new things with the bike and they’re clearly paying off. My starts were a lot better than before which makes a great difference. I tried not to rush things today because it was easy to make mistakes.

“Still I felt that my speed was good. In the third moto I started to push at the end and I was catching up quickly to De Dycker. However I had a bit of an issue with my goggles which hurt my vision. Anyway, this result gives us a good base to work from for the next MXGP in Maggiora and I’m looking forward to the second half of the World Championship season.”

Over in England Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings put together 1-1-1 results to win the MX2 class ahead of names like Max Anstie. In the MX1 class Shaun Simpson took the overall ahead of Steven Frossard. Herlings was happy to be back at the Hawkstone Park facility for this one off appearance in the British championship.

“It went pretty well,” Herlings said. “We won all three MX2 motos and that was expected, but we still had to do it, it was a good day. I like the circuit, always have and it was great weather, so that made it a nice weekend.”

In France Xavier Boog was crowned MX1 champion despite riding in some pain. Boog who has struggled with injures the last two years, and entered last weekend race in Gaillac, France with a shoulder injury picked up from the Grand Prix of France a little over a week ago.

“It was a tough weekend,” Boog said. “It was a pretty difficult week mentally as I couldn’t train following the crash at Villars. When I tried to ride my bike on Friday my shoulder was painful and I didn’t know what to expect, but in the end it was OK and I could win the three races today. I couldn’t expect any better from this weekend.”

Now they all head to Maggiora in Italy for the Grand Prix of Italy. It’s a circuit most love and you can expect all these riders will be brimming with confidence after their successful weekend.

Herlings interview

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings might not be in the form of his life, but he still continues to dominate the MX2 championship points. The Flying Dutchman went 1-1 last weekend and will head to Maggiora, Italy with his confidence growing and his condition improving.

We caught up with the red plate owner after his victory and asked him about his weekend in France.

Q: Jeffrey, how did you feel with your weekend?

Herlings: Saturday was a tough day, and I struggled a bit. It isn’t one of my favorite tracks. When you come from Holland we are used to sand, and in France it was up-hills and down-hills, hard pack and rocky, so not my type of circuit. Some of the other guys like Jordi (Tixier) and Valentin (Guillod) grew up on tracks like this. On the Saturday I had an ok start, but then crashed and worked my way up to sixth, but then my bike died going towards the finish line and I finished 24th. I was a bit stressed during the night for the Sunday starts.

Q: Sunday you looked much sharper?

Herlings: Sunday I did what I had to do, and got two holeshots, which was a surprise considering I was all the way on the outside. First moto got the holeshot, but then made a small crash and some guys passed me. I passed them back, but they rode so well. Second moto I had another great start, and got the moto win and the overall win.

Q: What will it take to be back to where you were before the injuries?

Herlings: I am still not in top condition and I had some crashes in Spain and also in Argentina. I need to get my speed back, but we are working on it and I left France with 1-1 results and no crashes, so now we can spend more time on the bike and improve.

Q: Despite your speed not being what it has been in the past you still have a massive lead in the series points. Are you happy about that?

Herlings: We did a good job for the championship and consistency wins championships. Last year we had 145 point lead and I figured I couldn’t’ lose the championship and I still see Jordi as the biggest challenge for the championship. It is still a long season and we have had eight races, but we still have 10 to go and I need to stay fit, because another injury and it’s all over for the championship.
