WINS IN THE WET FOR GAJSER AND EVERTS AT A HISTORIC MXGP OF CASTILLA LA MANCHA!

COZAR (Spain) 16 March 2025 –The Circuito Moto Ranch at Cózar in southern Spain once more had to deal with adverse weather conditions throughout Sunday’s action, which made the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha a massively challenging second round of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship for all of the riders and teams.

With sunshine and showers creating difficult conditions of all kinds, it was a day for the tough and the technical riders to prevail, and this was shown in the results for both classes.

Slovenian legend Tim Gajser, racing as ever for Honda HRC in MXGP, completed a perfect weekend to take his 50th career Grand Prix victory and equal the great Joel Robert for fifth position on the all-time GP win list.  Great consistency for Fantic Factory Racing teammates Glenn Coldenhoff and Andrea Bonacorsi resulted in the first double podium for the delighted Italian brand!

The MX2 class saw an emotional win for the master of the mud, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing new boy Liam Everts, who followed up a first race second position with a resounding 81-second victory over his teammate Kay de Wolf!  The reigning Champion was happy to gain back the red plate that he lost overnight with a determined second overall, but the most joyful face on the podium was Ferruccio Zanchi, after taking his first career race win and podium finish!

It was a tough day for the red plate holders Maxime Renaux and Sacha Coenen, who will both switch to regular plates for the next round, but they have time to recover as the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship is still very much in its infancy!

The Honda HRC teammates Gajser and home hero Ruben Fernandez topped the timesheets in a very wet morning Warm-up session, but the first race Fox Holeshot Award went to the private red machine of Team Honda Motoblouz SR Motul pilot Kevin Horgmo, for the first time in the MXGP class! That was only after he narrowly avoided being involved in a first corner pile-up that began with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rookie Lucas Coenen sliding to the floor from what looked like a leading position! Red plate holder Maxime Renaux was also caught in the tangle and had to pick up his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP machine from the wet Spanish clay.

After two corners, Fernandez had darted to the inside of Horgmo to take over the lead, with Coldenhoff also able to get past the Norwegian into the next left-hander. The Dutch veteran was not finished there, however, and briefly took the lead from Fernandez in a great first lap battle!

Gajser, however, was lurking, and was able to drive through the ruts to get around Coldenhoff, then took advantage of a mistake from his teammate to take the lead before the end of the first full lap, and start to pull away with what would be the Acerbis Fastest Lap of the day on lap two.

Calvin Vlaanderen was putting in a solid ride for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, and worked his way past Coldenhoff for third at the halfway point. Further back, behind a solid Horgmo who kept fifth until the flag, Isak Gifting hauled his JK Racing Yamaha ahead of Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP veteran Romain Febvre in an entertaining early scrap, and the pair finished in sixth and seventh, just ahead of Bonacorsi.

The two big first turn crashers, Coenen and Renaux, showed their determination for points with recoveries to ninth and tenth respectively, but they were the last riders not to be lapped by a dominant Gajser, and the Honda HRC teammates celebrated a stunning 1-2 finish ahead of Vlaanderen, who had swapped mistakes with Coldenhoff to maintain third place ahead of the Fantic man.

More rain fell on the already sodden circuit for MXGP race two, but the pack worked through the first corner relatively unscathed this time, with the Fox Holeshot Award going to Pauls Jonass, his first for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, but Coenen was right with him and took the lead into the downhill third corner! By this time, Fernandez had fallen over the rear wheel of Coldenhoff in turn two, as Gajser pushed forward from crossing the Holeshot line in tenth!

Gajser was in determined mood to not let Coenen get away, and suddenly he was up to third place, moving inside both Fantic riders through one downhill section! Then he railed around the outside of Jonass before the new waves section, and had Coenen in his sights! It was one of the best first lap recoveries of recent times for the Slovenian.

It looked like the fans who had braved the ever-changing weather were going to be treated to a battle between the two silver medallists from last year’s Championships, but the young Belgian slipped off his machine in a right-hand rut and had to fight back from ninth position.  Gajser took off with the lead on the treacherous circuit, with Coldenhoff and Bonacorsi in a distant pursuit.

The other top finishers from race one had a tough second outing, with Vlaanderen having various issues and ending up out of the points, and Fernandez only able to recover to twelfth from his second corner crash. The Fantic freight train behind Gajser extended to Brian Bogers, who held a solid fourth ahead of Kawasaki pairing Febvre and Jonass, with Gifting seventh ahead of a more steady Coenen.

Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team pilot Mattia Guadagnini had suffered a problem at the start of race one, but was able to claim ninth this time ahead of Horgmo, with Renaux crashing on more than one occasion to end up eleventh and end the day in tenth overall, and third in the Championship.

Febvre’s perseverance led to him taking fifth overall and rising back to second in the points standings. Fernandez was able to claim fourth overall on the day, but a late mistake in the first corner by Coldenhoff allowed Bonacorsi to pass his teammate and take a career-best second place in race two. Coldenhoff had done enough to keep the second step on the podium for the day, with Bonacorsi able to climb his first career podium in third!  What a way for Fantic Factory Racing to make its first appearances on an MXGP podium!

Ultimately though, the day belonged to Tim Gajser, with a double victory that moves him into rarefied air as only the sixth rider in history to score his 50th Motocross Grand Prix victory, and leads Febvre by 20 points as they head towards St Jean d’Angely for the MXGP of Europe next weekend!

Tim Gajser: "It was a great weekend—three out of three wins and two strong motos in really tough conditions. Yesterday’s qualifying race win was important for securing a good gate pick today. In the first race, I got a solid start, while in the second, I had to fight through the pack, but I was able to control the pace and get the job done. I’m really happy with how everything went. A huge thank you to my team and everyone around me; I know how hard they are working. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to go again in two weeks!"

Glenn Coldenhoff: "It’s been a while since my last podium, so this feels really good. My starts were on point this weekend, which made everything much easier. Unfortunately, I made a small mistake in the second moto, bent my shift lever, and ended up in neutral, which is so easy to do in these tough conditions., but I have to thank the whole team and all the mechanics—they have such a tough job in conditions like these. Fantic did an amazing job with the bike, and having two Fantic riders on the podium is incredible. We’re building momentum, and I’m excited for what’s ahead!"

Andrea Bonacorsi “ It’s amazing to be on the podium. I felt super well in the team from the first moment so we say that it was going to be good this year and that we will be on the podium and we made it now in the second race so we have to be proud of it of what we are making and a big thanks to everybody today because it was really survival mode today for everybody, riders and mechanics but we made it 2-3. Also, congrats to Glenn (Coldenhoff), because we did a really amazing job. But thanks to everybody at home, and see you soon. But thanks to everybody at home, and see you soon.”

There were no expressions of surprise when the wet morning Warm-up session was topped by Everts, by a second and a half from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo, while Cas Valk again showed his speed in the mud with third for Venrooy KTM.

The red plate was being worn by Sacha Coenen, as the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star stood on equal points with De Wolf. However, a tangle with Adamo on the start straight left the 2023 Champion on the floor, and Coenen himself well down the order, and things didn’t get any better all day for the 18-year-old!

Another 18-year-old was starting the day of his life, however, as Ferruccio Zanchi burst into the lead marginally ahead of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 machine of Thibault Benistant, the winner of Saturday’s Qualifying Race! Everts gave chase, with his teammate De Wolf quickly moving up to join him, although not before he thrillingly swapped places with Benistant for most of the first full lap!

Mathis Valin, fastest in Saturday’s Time Practice session for Kawasaki Racing Team MX2, got past his fellow Frenchman on the second lap and was looking good in fourth, until a crash on lap eight forced him to pull out with a painful wrist, and he was sadly unable to line up for race two. This promoted a hard-charging Simon Laengenfelder to fifth place, flying the flag for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as his teammates could only recover to ninth (Adamo) and eleventh (Coenen), with Camden McLellan the last rider not to be lapped in tenth for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.

There was a heroic performance from TM Moto CRD Motosport rider Julius Mikula, who moved up two places to eighth on the final lap! Quentin Prugnieres was impressive with seventh for WZ-Racing KTM, although Valk was able to recover from a start outside of the top ten to pass Quentin with four laps to go.

Many thought that Everts would close in on the young Italian out front, but Zanchi was up to the challenge and took his first career GP race win, the first for Honda in MX2 since Calvin Vlaanderen in 2019!  Everts, De Wolf, Benistant, and Laengenfelder rounded out the top five.

After a dry spell before MX2 Race Two, the heavens cruelly opened on the circuit to break the hearts of the hard-working track crew, and lap times in the second outing were on average ten seconds higher than race one!

This time it was Everts who blasted to the Fox Holeshot Award line with the lead over De Wolf, while Benistant and McLellan battled over third for most of the first lap! The Yamaha man dropped back to sixth, as McLellan’s Triumph teammate Guillem Farres, only 16th in race one, held fourth from Adamo at the end of the first full lap. Benistant also lost a battle to Laengenfelder, before losing control on a rough downhill and dropping to an eventual twelfth place finish.

McLellan got stuck in trackside mud on the same lap, and was unable to restart, walking back to the Paddock in bitter disappointment.  Adamo and Valk were moving impressively forward, helped by mistakes from Farres who slipped to an eventual sixth, just ahead of Prugnieres and Mikula who finished seventh and eighth again.  Home rider Oriol Oliver took ninth for KTM BTS Racing Team, just ahead of first race winner Zanchi, who had to recover from a first lap mistake to take tenth place, which proved to just about be enough to climb the overall podium!

Laengenfelder was able to get back ahead of Valk after the tall Dutchman had taken advantage of a mistake by the German, who charged up to the rear wheel of Adamo.  So much so that the Italian pushed hard enough to catch De Wolf as they started the final lap! While Everts serenely floated to the race win, at times around ten seconds faster than everyone else, his teammate had to pick up his pace to keep the two KTM men behind him! Able to keep enough of a gap, the Dutchman secured second overall and a return to the top of the points table. Adamo held a defensive line into the last corner as Laengenfelder went for a blast around the outside, knowing that the pass would mean a podium finish! The Italian hit a bump and briefly stopped, and the German could not avoid him, hitting the ground himself!  He got back up quickly to claim fourth overall ahead of Adamo.

Zanchi took his first career GP podium, and Honda’s first in MX2 since Stephen Rubini’s third overall in May 2022, at Maggiora.  It puts him up to eighth in the standings and should see a major leap in his confidence. The second race was all about Liam Everts, however, and his dominant win by a minute and twenty seconds indicates just how much better he is at this style of racing.  After being unsure if he could ever ride again after his injuries from last year, it was a brilliant sixth career victory for the determined Belgian, who now moves up to second in the points standings, just six points behind his teammate!

The big clean-up for the teams has a time limit, as they face a 1,000 km journey north to St Jean d’Angely in France for the MXGP of Europe next weekend!  Last year’s event there was affected by the weather, and this year may see something similar, but we all know that it can make for an incredible weekend of racing in front of the passionate French fans!

Liam Everts: "I’m absolutely speechless. Just six months ago, I was sitting on the couch, not knowing if I would ever race again. But I worked hard for this moment—I didn’t do it alone, and I’m grateful for the people who supported me along the way. It’s incredible to achieve this with my new team, and having our boss, here to see us go one-two makes it even more special. (About riding in the mud) I just focused on letting it flow, and I’m thankful for the techniques my dad taught me. This one means a lot."

Kay de Wolf: “It was a solid day. Yesterday, I lost the red plate and was tied on points with Sasha, so Ben Townley came up to me and said, ‘Kai, what’s going on? No red plate anymore?’ and I just told him, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take it home tomorrow night.’ And that’s exactly what we did. I couldn’t have done it without the whole team—Kai Haneke and everyone working so hard for us. I’m really happy to still be leading the championship, and I just want to thank my team, my family, my girlfriend, and everyone who supports me."

Ferruccio Zanchi: "This weekend was really special—my first MX2 race win and my first overall podium. After Argentina, I struggled a lot, but we made a big step here. The second race was tough—I didn’t get a great start, had issues with vision, and tangled with another rider. When they told me I finished third overall, I honestly couldn’t believe it! I’m so happy, and I have to thank my team for their amazing work, my sponsor, my family. Looking forward to next weekend!"

GAJSER AND BENISTANT MASTER THE MUD OF CÓZAR TO WIN THE QUALIFYING RACES

CÓZAR, (Spain) 15 March 2025 - The Circuito Motor Ranch on the edge of the small Spanish village of Cózar saw the first day of on-track action today for the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha, and despite constant heavy rain in the lead up to the event, the Qualifying Races went ahead as scheduled with the track even offering multiple dry lines by the end of the day!

The MXGP Qualifying Race saw a great battle between current red plate holder, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP leader Maxime Renaux and Tim Gajser. The Honda HRC man Gajser emerged victorious, but only after resisting a mighty challenge from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rookie Lucas Coenen!

The MX2 Qualifying Race win was taken by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 star Thibault Benistant, his first chequered flag since the MXGP of Galicia last season, so he clearly enjoys some Spanish soil!  Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Sacha Coenen moved forward to take second place, and takes the red plate into tomorrow’s GP races as he levelled on points with reigning World Champion, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing pilot Kay de Wolf!

The weather couldn’t deter the hardcore Motocross fans that came to watch the racing, and they were treated to some amazing action in conditions that tested the best riders in all classes, and the hard-working track crews are now doing all they can to prepare the circuit for Sunday’s full Grand Prix schedule.

Lucas Coenen looked to be back in top form as he topped the timesheets in the morning Free Practice session, ahead of JK Racing Yamaha man Isak Gifting.  The Swede was just knocked off the top spot by Gajser on the final lap of a thrilling Time Practice session, shown live on MXGP-TV.com in Europe for the first time.  The Slovenian took the first gate pick away for the Qualifying Race, while Fantic Factory Racing rider Brian Bogers took third behind Gifting.

Isak was clearly fired up with his practice speed and blasted to the front as the MXGP pack headed into the first corner of the Qualifying Race! He had full factory riders Renaux, Gajser, then the Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP duo of Pauls Jonass and Romain Febvre all snapping at his heels!

Renaux made his move on braking into the fourth corner, and Gajser was not able to follow the Frenchman instantly past the Swede!  After completing the first full lap in third, the Slovenian darted up the inside to take second, startling Gifting into a mistake which saw him on the floor instantly!  Jonass inherited third place ahead of Coenen in fourth, then the Fantic Factory Racing teammates Brian Bogers and Glenn Coldenhoff, after Febvre had tipped over in a tight right hander on the opening circulation.

Gajser soon closed on the leader and looked to be biding his time until the chance arose.  At the start of lap five, with Coenen setting faster lap times and catching them both, Tim made the same move as he had on Gifting, and the pair of them blasted down the start straight side by side! Both riders made mistakes in their selected lines, but Renaux came off worse and hit the ground, allowing Coenen through but recovering well enough to at least hold third place.

Gifting, meanwhile, battled with Honda HRC’s home hero Ruben Fernandez and Febvre at the edge of the top ten, before crashing again to eventually finish twelfth.  The Spaniard took tenth at the flag behind Febvre and Team Honda Motoblouz SR Motul rider Kevin Horgmo.  Calvin Vlaanderen moved forward to take seventh for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.

All eyes were on the battle at the front, however, as Coenen sensationally closed in on Gajser! Looking eager to make a pass, the teenage Belgian lunged to the inside on a downhill on lap seven, but lost control and fell spectacularly off the track! Unhurt, but with a damaged motorcycle, Lucas was able to salvage sixth place at the finish line.

Gajser, Renaux, and Jonass celebrated solid top three results, with Bogers just keeping Coldenhoff behind him for fourth position.  The French Yamaha man extended his points lead due to Febvre’s ninth position, which leaves him level with Gajser, eight points off the top.  Coldenhoff advances to fourth in the series ahead of Mattia Guadagnini, who struggled to eleventh for Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team.

The Championship fight is just getting started, of course, and the established contenders now have what looks to be a fully up-to-speed Lucas Coenen to deal with.  The MXGP of Castilla La Mancha could see a stunning battle in tomorrow’s races!

Tim Gajser: ” I was feeling good out there today. The track had deep sections but overall, I felt comfortable. We made some changes early in the day that worked well, and I got off to a solid start. I made quick passes in the beginning and then controlled the race from there, so I’m really happy with how it went.”

In the difficult conditions of Practice, it was Kawasaki Racing Team MX2 rider Mathis Valin who topped the timesheets in both Free and Time Practice sessions, three-quarters of a second ahead of second-placed Cas Valk for Venrooy KTM, while reigning World Champion Kay de Wolf could only muster eighth position for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

As the pack fired into the first corner for their Qualifying Race, Thibault Benistant crossed the Holeshot line first for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, but Valin was alongside him and led into turn two, looking to put his Practice speed to good use and pulling out a gap instantly!  The young Frenchman maybe got a little too eager to pull away, and his front wheel got away from him in a left hander, putting him back to around 18th position by the time he had picked the bike up.

His countryman Benistant suddenly held a solid lead, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammates Sacha Coenen and Andrea Adamo disputed second position ahead of crowd favourite Guillem Farres on the Monster Energy Triumph Racing machine.  Reigning Champion De Wolf was back in the pack, only eighth at the end of the first full lap and with a lot of work to do.

Liam Everts started to move forward for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, passing Honda HRC’s Ferruccio Zanchi on lap three and closing to the rear wheel of Farres, as De Wolf also passed the Italian and started to look menacing. Liam quickly got past the Spaniard with a creative line approaching a big uphill jump, but De Wolf was frustrated in his efforts to follow his teammate past.

Sacha Coenen got past Adamo on lap four, but neither could make any ground on the leader Benistant.  Everts continued to advance, and with three laps to go, Adamo got caught behind a stalled rider in a corner and the Belgian was able to take advantage, securing third in the race in a season which is becoming increasingly better than expectations for him!

Farres was still fifth at this point, but just as De Wolf was making a last-ditch charge, the Spaniard tipped over in a right hander and handed fifth to the Champ! A clearly disturbed Farres picked the bike up in eighth, but lost two more positions in the final lap to come away with tenth, and the final Championship point.

Cas Valk came home in ninth behind WZ-Racing KTM rider Quentin Prugnieres, leaving Oriol Oliver as the top Spaniard with seventh for BTS Racing Team! Zanchi finished in sixth behind De Wolf, whose fifth place left him level on points with second-placed Coenen, giving the Belgian the red plate for the first time in his career on a tie-breaker!

Everts’ third puts him equal third in the series with Simon Laengenfelder, who had a disappointing eleventh position today, but Benistant’s dominant win lifts him up to sixth in the standings behind Adamo.

The fight in MX2 is as unpredictable as ever, and tomorrow’s races should continue to thrill and surprise at the wild and woolly MXGP of Castilla La Mancha!  Don’t miss the action from both classes at round two of the FIM Motocross World Championships!

Thibault Benistant: "The first round was really tough for me. I didn’t feel like myself all weekend, and I struggled a lot—it was honestly one of my worst results ever. But we didn’t lose focus; we just kept pushing forward. I know I need to free myself up and enjoy the riding more, and that’s exactly what I was aiming for today. It feels great to get my first qualifying race win of the season. I haven’t won many qualifying races before, so this is a good way to start the year, and I hope to get a few more."

MOTOCROSS MAKES A RAPID RETURN TO COZAR FOR THE MXGP OF CASTILLA LA MANCHA

COZAR (Spain) 13 March 2025 – After making its debut on the FIM Motocross World Championship Calendar to close the curtain for 2024, the Spanish venue of Cozar welcomes the MXGP elite back to Europe for the second round of the 2025 season, the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha!

Named after the landlocked autonomous community that it is set in, the track, which has been extensively worked on since last year, is part of the Circuito Motor Ranch, to be found around 240km south of the capital Madrid and 130km west of the city of Albacete.  Last season a massive crowd cheered home hero Jorge Prado to the MXGP class victory and his fourth world title, while Lucas Coenen took all three races in MX2, but was unable to prevent Kay de Wolf from sealing the deal to become World Champion for the first time!

The picture looks very different in MXGP after the 2025 season opener in Argentina, as French fighters Maxime Renaux and Romain Febvre start the European leg of the campaign just one point apart!

In MX2, De Wolf leads the way again, but a wild opening round shows that the Dutchman has plenty of competition if he wants to keep the #1 plate on the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine! Sacha Coenen claimed the second race win for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and lies just three points behind the defending Champ, with his teammate Simon Laengenfelder only two further points back!

Besides the GP classes the EMX250 European Championship fires into life at Cozar, with the top three riders from last year all graduating to MX2, so the field is wide open!  Remaining top ten Championship finishers Ivano van Erp, Nico Greutmann, and Max Werner will be joined by last year’s EMX125 top three – Noel Zanocz, Gyan Doensen, and Simone Mancini – which should generate a massively competitive series!  Add in Bobby Bruce and Hakon Osterhagen, returnees from MX2, plus Australian star Jake Cannon into the mix, and the outcome is tough to predict!  Home riders Elias Escandell, Francisco Garcia, and Salvador Perez will certainly be striving for the podium!

The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF also kickstarts its season with a new cast of characters all looking to establish themselves at this higher level. Francesco Bellei is the highest remaining rider from last year, who won the final race at Cozar in 2024, so he is sure to be a force against second-generation racers Levi Townley and Jarne Bervoets, Matterley Basin bLU cRU 125cc winner Jamie Keith, Mano Faure, Aron Katona, and Dani Heitink. A massive 64 riders, including 13 Spaniards hoping for home glory, will be lining up to sprinkle the Cozar circuit with the sweet smell of two-stroke machinery!

The MXGP of Castilla La Mancha is ready to launch MXGP into Europe for 2025!

MXGP World Championship leader Maxime Renaux earned the red plate for the first time in MXGP with his Argentina Qualifying Race win, and defended it with the overall verdict on Sunday for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.  Although only recording ninth overall here last year, his history in Spain is a colourful one.  He took his World Junior 125cc title in this country in 2015, and has taken a GP victory in both MX2 and MXGP classes at the intù-Xanadu Arroyomolinos venue, although a crash there in 2023 seriously affected both that season and the next with foot injuries.

His main competition in 2025 have not achieved stellar success in this part of the world, however, as Romain Febvre, second by only a single point after a brilliant weekend in Argentina for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, has never won a Grand Prix here, only taking a single race win in 2021.  He has finished third overall four times in Spain, most recently at Lugo last season.  For sure he will be searching to remedy this mark on his record!

Tim Gajser, nine points behind Renaux for Honda HRC, has taken just one GP win on Spanish soil, back in his debut MXGP season of 2016, and was second overall at Cozar last year while seeing his title chance disappear.  His teammate Ruben Fernandez has big shoes to fill as the new home favourite. 11th in the table after Argentina, and 11th here last year, he will be fired to return to the podium, as he did at intù-Xanadu in 2023!

One of the big surprises of the opening round was the performance of the new Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team, who took both Fox Holeshot Awards on Sunday and saw Mattia Guadagnini claim fourth in both races for fourth overall! Mattia will be looking to forget his experience at Cozar last season, which ended with him on the ground, but instead he’ll be looking to repeat his podium performance in 2023 when he took his best MXGP result of second overall near Madrid, as well as his last ever EMX250 win in 2020.

Glenn Coldenhoff lies fifth in the series for Fantic Factory Racing, and he tasted Spanish podium celebrations with current teammate Brian Bogers back in 2022, behind Renaux!  Sixth in the Championship is the fast rookie Lucas Coenen, who has been recovering from arm injuries and was very happy with his performance in Argentina for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  The question is, can he quickly return to the form that saw him win two of the three MX2 GPs held in Spain last season?!

Of the remaining contenders, privateer Valentin Guillod is the only other rider lining up at Cozar with Spanish success in his record, having taken the MX2 class victory at Talavera in 2015!

The 2025 MXGP season has only begun to give us a clue as to its current form book. Let’s see how much the MXGP of Castilla La Mancha can tell us!

The big red #1 plate in the MX2 class will be worn by the defending World Champion, Kay de Wolf, and he will be attempting to repeat his win in Spain for the second round of the 2024 season, his only win in this country.

Simon Laengenfelder is the only other rider in the field who has also won before on Spanish ground, having won the 2023 MX2 GP at intù-Xanadu Arroyomolinos.  The three-time bronze medallist looked good for the win in Argentina until a disastrous final two laps of the day, but still lies just five points shy of the lead and will be happy to be back in Europe healthy and ready to go! His teammate Sacha Coenen is also looking strong after winning race two in Argentina, and the young Belgian with more Fox Holeshot Awards than anyone in the field could be a real force at Cozar for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

A surprise fourth in the standings is De Wolf’s new Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Liam Everts, after minimal preparation due to injury he delivered a stunning performance in Argentina and should only get stronger from just 13 points off the lead.  2023 Champion Andrea Adamo finished second overall at Cozar last year and looked strong with the Qualifying Race win in Argentina.  He also won a race in Lugo last year and will be full of confidence on Spanish soil, unfortunate to be only fifth in the standings but knowing there’s a long season ahead!

Thibault Benistant won the Qualifying Race at Lugo last year, and stood on the podium at Cozar in September, so he will be looking to recover from a lowly 11th overall in Argentina for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2.

Spanish rider Guillem Farres will race his first Grand Prix in his home country for three years, and he showed good speed to start the year tenth in the series for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.  His countryman Oriol Oliver showed great pace at Còrdoba for BTS Racing KTM but was hindered by crashes, while David Braceras scored a career-best race finish of fourth in race one for his JM Racing Honda debut.  All of the home riders should enjoy serious crowd support around the compact Cozar circuit and the atmosphere will go stellar if they find some success!

The MXGP of Castilla La Mancha promises to launch into the European season in fine style. Not one to be missed!
