GAJSER AND ADAMO DELIGHT THE CROWDS WITH VICTORY AT THE MONSTER ENERGY MXGP OF TRENTINO!

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino, Italy) 13 April 2025 – Despite mother nature sprinkling the Dolomites with a little moisture on Grand Prix Sunday, the crowds that flock to the “Il Ciclamino” circuit still made the noise and kept the legendary atmosphere that the Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino is famous for!

The fifth round of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championships provided more great racing on an unpredictable surface, but the results were exactly what the two biggest sections of fans – the local Italians and the travelling Slovenians – would have been hoping for, and they truly showed their appreciation!

The MXGP class was ruled by Championship leader Tim Gajser, who took his record sixth GP victory at the circuit with a perfect 1-1 for Honda HRC, in front of a legion of his flag-waving supporters who responded accordingly.  Romain Febvre put up spirited resistance for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP and took second overall in front of the Fantic Factory Racing MXGP machine of Glenn Coldenhoff.

The first MX2 race of the day saw a historical first GP Race win for the Triumph manufacturer, as Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s lone wolf Camden McLellan took a Fox Holeshot to chequered flag masterclass, earning the South African his first win at this level. However, for the third straight year in MX2, the overall victory went to a rider who didn’t win either race, as Andrea Adamo survived last lap passes in each outing to keep Italian fans happy and claim his fourth career victory for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing!

Championship leader Kay de Wolf kept the red plate on his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing machine with second overall, while second race winner Thibault Benistant climbed to the third step of the podium for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2. It was perhaps the most significant day yet in the Championship with varying fortunes for the four men who started the weekend just 14 points apart!

After winning Saturday’s Qualifying Race, Febvre was fastest again in warm-up, with Gajser second and Andrea Bonacorsi third for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP.

On Saturday, Febvre was denied a Holeshot by the private Kawasaki of Nicolas Lapucci, but in the first MXGP race today there was no stopping the factory rider from claiming the Fox Holeshot Award for the first time this season! While Antonio Cairoli did his best from the outside for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team, it was Maxime Renaux who gave chase in second for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, although he lost traction around the second corner and got passed on either side by Gajser and Fantic Factory Racing MXGP’s Glenn Coldenhoff!

By the end of the first full lap, Lucas Coenen had moved up for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing by passing Renaux and looked set on chasing down the leaders, but Febvre and Gajser set a blistering pace out in front, and Coldenhoff was going with them!

Ruben Fernandez was fighting in the top ten for Honda HRC and had the two Ducati riders behind him as Jeremy Seewer passed Cairoli for seventh by the end of the first full lap. Also fighting in the top ten was Austrian privateer Marcel Stauffer, last year’s EMX 2T Champion for the Osicka MX Team, getting as high as seventh at one point! On lap six, Coenen made a move on Coldenhoff for third, and Renaux also got past the Dutchman a lap later! They would stay in those positions for the rest of the race.

Fernandez dropped the bike and handed Seewer sixth position, which he would keep to the flag, while the Spaniard had to fight back up to seventh with passes on Cairoli, Stauffer, and the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP machine of Calvin Vlaanderen, who would come home in eighth.  The TEM JP253 KTM Racing rider Jan Pancar took ninth, and Jeffrey Herlings looked to be in a better position than yesterday with a fighting tenth place for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, just getting past Stauffer with three laps to go.

For thirteen laps, the patient Gajser stalked Febvre at the front, before finally hounding the Frenchman into a mistake in the middle of the circuit, then diving inside the Kawasaki at the next corner!  Febvre was not done, however, and although he nearly crashed on a couple of occasions, fought back to the Honda’s rear wheel with the fastest lap of the whole race on the penultimate lap!  Sadly for him, he just pushed the front wheel into some soft dirt and fell at the top of the hill, bringing a roar of ecstatic relief from the Slovenian fans near the finish line as their man cruised to victory!

Febvre’s starting prowess deserted him in race two, as Coldenhoff edged across the line, although Fernandez grabbed the early lead alongside Pit Lane, allowing Gajser to charge around the outside of the following corner to make it a Honda HRC 1-2.  Towards the end of the first lap it was the red plate of the #243 who emerged in the lead after out-braking his teammate into a right-hander.

Sadly for Ducati fans, Seewer was left to pick up his machine after a first corner crash that left the Swiss with more than just a torn race shirt.  With the full gate of riders to work through, he got back to 22nd at the flag, three places behind Cairoli, who hadn’t started much better.

Febvre was taking his time to work through the pack, and it wasn’t until lap five that he got past Renaux for fifth, and was chasing down Lucas Coenen.  Coenen was driven forward to pass Coldenhoff for third, but came up against the bullish Fernandez, who defied the Belgian’s attempts to push him aside.  In similar fashion, Coldenhoff was keeping Febvre behind, and for four thrilling laps the quartet circulated together!  The cycle was only broken by Coenen, whose front wheel washed out on a slick section, holding up “The Hoff” long enough to allow Febvre past into third.  It took the Frenchman a further lap to dispose of Fernandez, by which time Gajser was over 11 seconds up the track

Team Motul Honda Motoblouz SR rider Kevin Horgmo, who had started the weekend sixth in the series, was again on the pace, and inherited fifth in the race with Coenen’s crash, keeping the Belgian back to sixth in the race.  Renaux could get no higher than seventh, with Pancar eighth, Bonacorsi fighting through a few riders to get to ninth, and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP man Jago Geerts taking tenth with a last lap pass on Herlings.

Ben Watson scored twelfth in both races to again finish in the top ten overall for MRT Racing Team Beta, just behind Herlings who ended the day ninth overall.

Coenen’s sixth looked good enough to still get him on the podium, but Coldenhoff pulled a brave outside pass on Fernandez for third in the race, and his second straight podium result with third overall!

Febvre did his best to hack down Gajser’s lead, but the Slovenian controlled things to the close, claiming his 52nd career GP victory and stretching his Championship lead to 39 points

Last year Gajser was dominant at the MXGP of Switzerland in mixed conditions which could affect the event again, but Febvre insists he has the pace to run with him and make it another Grand Prix not to be missed!

Tim Gajser: “Really happy with this weekend—two solid races. I knew I had to start well because passing is always tough on this track. I started third in the first race and had a great battle with Romain (Febvre) until the end before making the pass. In the second race, I got around Ruben (Fernandez) early and just controlled it from there. Huge thanks to my team and everyone supporting me, and of course the fans who came to support me, this one means a lot!"

Romain Febvre: “Honestly, I’m disappointed. I felt like the fastest rider all weekend. The first race was going well, but we had a race incident with a yellow flag, I lost time and left the door open for Tim (Gajser) to pass. I tried to fight back but made a mistake and crashed. In the second race, I didn’t get the start, and like Tim said, it’s really difficult to pass here. I worked my way to second, but the gap was too big. I just need to keep working harder to finally get the win."

Glenn Coldenhoff: “Not bad for a 34-year-old, I think! I struggled a bit all weekend and was off the pace but starts are everything. I got my second holeshot of the year and that made a big difference. I was freer, could follow Tim for a while, and just felt much better. It’s my third podium in five rounds—that’s crazy. Big thanks to the team, they’ve been amazing. Hopefully we can keep this going."

Qualifying Race winner Liam Everts carried the feel-good factor into a damp morning warm up session with the fastest time for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Rick Elzinga and De Wolf.

McLellan shot out of the centre of the start gate to earn his first career Fox Holeshot Award, and began to streak away from fast-starting Valerio Lata, the Honda HRC rider getting the local supporters, who have seen plenty of success for him in EMX racing at this circuit, behind him as he held second for the first half of the race!

Adamo and Everts gave chase in third and fourth, while De Wolf had to battle from outside the top ten initially. After five minutes he had worked past the JM Racing Honda of David Braceras for fifth, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammates Sacha Coenen and Simon Laengenfelder were battling from further back still.

To the roar of the home crowd, who maybe sensed that a home win was more likely to come from the former World Champion, Adamo squeezed past Lata on lap nine, with Everts and De Wolf following suit quickly.  Lata was able to hold onto fifth to the flag, ahead of the Venrooy Racing KTM of Cas Valk, while Laengenfelder was able to make a pass on Elzinga for seventh three laps from the end, hurting his Championship challenge at a track where he was expected to do well. Coenen took ninth ahead of disappointed Honda HRC rider Ferruccio Zanchi, while Benistant suffered a late crash and could only salvage twelfth.

As has often been the case in MX2, the top positions changed hands in the later laps, with De Wolf passing his teammate for third on lap 12, then setting about Adamo with intent, the home rider struggling with lapped riders.  Finally, the reigning Champion took advantage of his predecessor’s confusion and charged around the outside of a tight left-hander!

There was no catching McLellan however, as he controlled the nerves to claim his first career race win by just over three seconds, and the first for the British manufacturer Triumph since its entry into MX2!  He also became the seventh race winner of this wide-open MX2 season!

Those who suffered with poor starts in race one largely made amends second time out, as Coenen dived across the Fox Holeshot Award line for his third black plate of the year, just ahead of Laengenfelder and Adamo in a factory KTM 1-2-3! Benistant was next, but there was disaster for Everts, just a few places behind, as he clipped his teammate’s rear wheel and fell on the exit of turn two, causing enough damage to stop him from restarting his machine!

Another title challenger, Laengenfelder, dropped back to fourth as Adamo and Benistant got past him on the opening lap, with McLellan passing the Gabriel SS24 KTM Factory Juniors machine of Oriol Oliver to run in fifth, keeping his chances of overall victory alive.

As has happened so often this season, Coenen crashed out of the lead, this time right in front of the local fans who roared as Adamo took the top spot!  The young Belgian restarted in eighth behind Valk, who climbed to fifth on lap five at a circuit he genuinely looked good on all weekend. Oliver claimed sixth in race two after only managing 15th in the opener.

That move upwards for Valk was partly down to a big crash for McLellan, smashing any chance of the overall win for both him and Triumph.  He looked to be struggling to restart, but eventually got back on and would see out the race in 16th, putting him sixth overall behind Valk.  Lata was unable to advance beyond 14th this time, leaving him tenth overall, just a point behind his teammate Zanchi. Elzinga took eighth overall behind Coenen.

De Wolf tried time and time again to get past Laengenfelder, but the German held strong to the close to at least keep De Wolf’s points lead down to 12. The crowd’s eyes were all on Adamo out front, however, as Benistant was at his flowing, flying best, and beginning to catch the Italian hero! Once again, Adamo’s frustration at lapped riders, on a difficult track to pass on, got the better of him, and the Frenchman struck at the end of Pit Lane, cementing the move by clearing the uphill triple jump while Adamo could not!

It was Thibault’s first GP race win since his home Grand Prix in May 2023, and knocked Laengenfelder off the podium in the process. De Wolf’s second place overall increased his Championship lead as Laengenfelder and Adamo both moved past Everts, who is now 28 behind his teammate in fourth. Benistant moved past Coenen into fifth in the series. Adamo’s fourth career GP win was a welcome one for his fans, and leaves him just 18 points down on the leader!

To glorious northern Italy we must say “Ciao”, and head further north to the green fields of Switzerland, as the Frauenfeld venue hosts round six of the World Championships. Join us there for the third weekend in a row to see how this enthralling series continues to develop!

Andrea Adamo: "It was a solid day. I’m a bit disappointed I couldn’t win the second race because I led the whole way and had a good gap. But in the last two laps, the lapped riders made things difficult. But anyway, that’s racing. I finished second and took the overall win, and that’s what matters most. We’ll keep pushing and hopefully carry this momentum forward."

Kay de Wolf: "It was a good weekend overall. I showed great speed but had to come from the back quite a few times after some average starts. Had some close moments, but I stayed consistent and scored strong points for the championship. I’m really happy to keep the red plate, and I’m already looking forward to the next one."

Thibault Benistant: "For sure, it feels good to get the race win. I’ve had some struggles recently—like in the first race today, I just wasn’t riding well and couldn’t explain why. But in Race 2, I felt like myself again, physically strong and fast. I pushed really hard on the final laps and managed to make the pass, which was a nice payback for when Andrea (Adamo) passed me in France. That was cool!"

QUALIFYING RACE WINNERS FEBVRE AND EVERTS MASTER THE SLOPES OF THE MONSTER ENERGY MXGP OF TRENTINO!

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino, Italy), 12 April 2025 – The Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino enjoyed beautiful sunshine for the Qualifying Races today at the “Il Ciclamino” circuit, and already the crowds packed the picturesque slopes to get behind their favourite riders, with many Slovenian and Swiss fans joining the local and not so local pilgrims to this Mecca of Motocross!

The action-packed MXGP Qualifying Race saw a clear win for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP leader Romain Febvre, although his title rival Tim Gajser limited the damage to his points lead by finishing second for Honda HRC. Jeremy Seewer took a popular third position for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team on the team’s home soil!

Liam Everts moved forward to take his first Qualifying Race win this season for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, at the venue where he won overall in 2024. Thibault Benistant kept up his good record in Qualifying Races this season with second place for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Simon Laengenfelder, who closed in on the Championship leader, but is now level on points with Everts!

We’ve only seen the first clues as to how the Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino will unfold, and tomorrow’s Grand Prix races should be fascinating!

Febvre was clearly in the mood to dominate the event with the fastest time in both Free and Time Practice sessions, with fellow Sardegna podium men Gajser and Fantic Factory Racing MXGP’s Glenn Coldenhoff behind him in the morning, although in the afternoon it was Calvin Vlaanderen, starting to get back up to his true pace for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, who was second fastest, ahead of the JK Racing Yamaha of Isak Gifting!

Nobody would have guessed the Holeshot winner of the Qualifying Race, however, as charging Tuscan Nicholas Lapucci stormed into the lead on his SM Action Racing Team Kawasaki, keeping Febvre at bay until halfway around the opening circulation!

The privateer Italian took full advantage of his local knowledge to hold the likes of Gajser and Gifting behind him early on, and the Slovenian snuck past the Swede for third halfway around the first full lap, before he nearly crashed on a small jump.  Distracted by Gajser’s misstep, Gifting was unfortunate to get the jump completely wrong and crash hard in his own right.  Slammed by his own motorcycle, he was unable to restart and is sadly unlikely to line up tomorrow.

Gajser was able to pass Lapucci before the first full lap was done, but the plucky Italian kept third until lap five, when the floodgates opened! As Ruben Fernandez tried to squeeze his Honda HRC machine past, he resisted a passing attempt from the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP bike of Maxime Renaux, and had to exit the circuit. The Spaniard re-joined between Lapucci and Renaux, but used the line he was on to pass the Italian, and was later judged to have gained an advantage.  Although he crossed the line in third, he was demoted to fifth for his transgression.

The next to pass Lapucci was Seewer, having his best race yet on the Ducati, but there was disappointment for the many fans of his temporary teammate Antonio Cairoli, who suffered early damage to his rear wheel, and had to pull in for repairs that were too extensive to make in Pit Lane. Cairoli’s fellow five-time winner at Trentino, Jeffrey Herlings, was the last to pass Lapucci, taking 22nd position for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

The other factory KTM of Lucas Coenen was down in the first corner, and fought through to a frustrated 11th, one place outside the points.  Suffering a similar poor start was the Fantic Factory Racing MXGP rider Andrea Bonacorsi, but the tall Italian moved forward with intent to take the final point in tenth, behind the TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team rider Jan Pancar in ninth.  Moving forward impressively to claim his best Qualifying Race finish yet for MRT Racing Team Beta was Ben Watson, taking a great eighth at the site of his most recent GP win.

Coldenhoff took a solid seventh behind Vlaanderen, who simply didn’t get the start his pace deserved and finished a second shy of his teammate Renaux.

Febvre was unstoppable out front and controlled the race to win by 5.774 seconds from Gajser, with Seewer and Renaux bumped up to third and fourth due to the penalty for Fernandez.  Febvre chipped a point away from Gajser’s series lead, which is now at 33 points. Coldenhoff is 31 points further back in third.

While the Championship battle is hardly close, it’s likely that tomorrow’s racing will be on a circuit which could well see some weather hit it overnight!

Romain Febvre: “It’s definitely a bit of redemption after last Saturday. At the same time, I carried the momentum from Sunday into this weekend. I felt good right from the morning—put in some strong laps in time practice to take pole. We worked hard on the starts this week and finally found a good tank setup, and it showed today. Pulling away from Gajser like that feels great—he’s the guy to beat—so it's a strong Saturday. Now the goal is to keep this consistency going into tomorrow”

Former EMX250 rivals Cas Valk for Venrooy KTM Racing and Honda HRC’s Valerio Lata showed their pace before the race, with Valk fastest in Free Practice, and Lata third behind Simon Laengenfelder.  In Time Practice it was Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Championship leader Kay de Wolf, for the first time this season, that set the fastest lap ahead of Lata and Valk in that order.

None of those three got a great start to the Qualifying Race, however, as Thibault Benistant swept across the front of Laengenfelder to claim the Holeshot, with CRD Motosport TM Moto’s Julius Mikula right with them!

The Czech rider made a mistake on the big uphill triple jump, however, and got passed by Liam Everts and the Monster Energy Triumph Racing machine of Camden McLellan.

De Wolf was mired in the pack, only back to eighth at the end of the first full lap, and had to work hard to recover the ground from his poor start. Everts made a sharp inside move on Laengenfelder for second, and set about the chase to Benistant. There was trouble for another World Champion, however, as Andrea Adamo, resplendent in all-Italian colours, dropped his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine, and had to work back to an eventual 14th.  His stablemate Sacha Coenen had an uncharacteristic poor start and could only fight back to 11th.  Also disappointed was Ferruccio Zanchi, who was forced to withdraw his Honda HRC machine on lap nine.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 teammates Karlis Reisulis and Rick Elzinga took ninth and tenth at the flag after the Dutchman suffered a small crash on lap five.  Quentin Prugnieres started well for WZ Racing KTM but slipped down the order to eighth, victim to charges through the pack from those old EMX250 rivals, Valk getting up to sixth and Lata to seventh.  They will both hope for better starts tomorrow!

De Wolf managed to pick off riders at a steady rate, reaching fifth by lap five, but unable to make an impression on McLellan, who continued his good form from Sardegna to take fourth.  Laengenfelder had a lonely race in third and reduced the Championship gap to just six points, but Everts was able to claw back the gap to Benistant with five minutes left on the clock!

With an impressive line up the hill after Pit Lane, the Belgian flew past the Frenchman to take his first Qualifying Race win for his new team, and join Laengenfelder on 185 points, just six down on De Wolf and now 14 ahead of the luckless Adamo!

It’s still wide open between the MX2 stars as we head into tomorrow’s races, with the Italian stars out for revenge, and all of the Championship contenders eager to stake their claim to the Trentino trophies!

The “antipasti” has been served and devoured, now all MXGP fans both here and worldwide are looking forward to the main course tomorrow! Book your seat for what is sure to be a table full of flavour!

Liam Everts: “It was pretty good. I had a decent start and managed to get around McLellan and Längenfelder early on. After that, I just settled in behind Thibault (Benistant)—he was riding really well, consistent and fast without making any mistakes. I knew I had to be patient, and when he finally made one, I was there to take advantage So I just had to be patient and it’s what I did and made three good laps at the end to bring it home!”

WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE – JOIN US FOR THE MONSTER ENERGY MXGP OF TRENTINO!

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino, Italy) 11 April 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship turns north from the island of Sardegna and heads to the gloriously picturesque Pietramurata circuit for its fifth round, the Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino!

This round is the closest thing that Slovenian legend Tim Gajser has to a home Grand Prix, and a legion of his fans always make the short trip to the Italian mountainsides to get behind their man! Mixed with already enthusiastic Italian supporters, the atmosphere is always out of this world, making Trentino a real attraction for Motocross fans across the world.  Tim is going for a record sixth Grand Prix win at this circuit to ensure his Honda HRC machine continues to display the Championship leader’s red plate!

There is a special return to action for Italian legend Antonio Cairoli, racing for the Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team at a circuit which holds many special memories for him and his fans! His very presence will certainly add to the attendance at the race, and he will also be up against his old rival Jeffrey Herlings. Like Gajser, each man has won five times around these hills and will be fired up to perform well again.

Kay de Wolf re-asserted himself at the top of MX2 at the MXGP of Sardegna, and now leads the Championship fight which sees four riders within 14 points of him! Simon Laengenfelder, Liam Everts, and home hero Andrea Adamo all have winning history in Trentino and are eager to take back the advantage!

With a wildcard ride from reigning WMX Champion Lotte van Drunen, and many fast riders out to prove themselves, MX2 could be spectacular fare this weekend!

The Slovenian flavour to the crowd will be appreciated by Sport TV Slovenia, who will be live with onsite commentators for all TG 243 fans. Italian broadcaster RAI Sport will also be hoping for their riders to excite their fans with their own onsite live commentators!

Below you can find the full list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

THE MOUNTAINS AWAIT THIS WEEKEND’S MONSTER ENERGY MXGP OF TRENTINO!

PIETRAMURATA, (Trentino, Italy) 10 April 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship concludes its first quarter with the return to the Italian mainland, and arguably the most picturesque venue on the calendar, the classic “Il Ciclamino” circuit at Pietramurata, for what is sure to be a stellar Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino!

One of 33 circuits in Italian territory to play host to a Motocross Grand Prix, Pietramurata has ran more of these events than any of the rest, this being the 21st time that World Championship Motocross enjoys the sound of engines bouncing off the cliff faces next to the track!

The first winner here was an Italian, on an Italian machine, as Massimo Contini claimed overall victory on his 125cc Cagiva in 1987.  This will be the 14th year in succession that Trentino has hosted an event, and during both pandemic-affected years of 2020 and 2021 we even held three GPs here within eight days!

In terms of most victories at this iconic circuit, well it comes down to the icons of World Motocross in the 21st Century, as four riders have each taken five GP wins… and three of those will line up this weekend!

The clearest candidate for taking a record sixth win is the current MXGP Championship leader, Tim Gajser, who took the very first of his 51 GP victories here in 2015, the year of his MX2 world title.  He will be looking to take his third GP win of the year for Honda HRC, or at the very least extend his 34-point Championship lead in front of what is the closest thing he has to a home crowd, as his fan club make the short journey from Slovenia to make some noise for their hero!

While the winner of the last two GPs here in the premier class, Jorge Prado, is not racing, the other two five-time winners here are, namely Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend Jeffrey Herlings, and the exciting return to action of nine-time World Champion Antonio Cairoli! The Sicilian icon will take to the circuit for Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team at the age of 39! His five wins here include the most recent GP win of his career, in October 2021, and this may very well be the last ever GP of his incredible time as a racer.

The MX2 class is once more being led by the reigning World Champion Kay de Wolf, who won the first race here last year for his current team, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, but fell in the first corner of race two. In a title race that sees the top four covered by just 14 points, and with all of them enjoying good recent results at Trentino, the MX2 races are sure to be wide open and entertaining! Flip a coin, or even roll a die, to take a guess at the winner!

The EMX250 European Championship returns to action this weekend, with two-stroke Wozniak MX Racing Team  hero Adrien Petit leading the way by just a single point from VHR VRT Yamaha Official EMX250 rider Janis Reisulis. Reisulis won at Trentino in EMX125 in 2023. The top Italian in the series is Brando Rispoli for Ghidinelli Racing Team KTM, but last year’s EMX125 winner here, Simone Mancini, will have high hopes to get the crowd excited for Fantic Factory Racing EMX250!

Hungarian Aron Katona leads the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Championship for Racestore KTM Factory Rookies after a double win in Sardegna, with fellow sand lover Dani Heitink in second for the MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 squad.  Behind them in the Championship sit four Italians, all hungry for success on home soil!

Francesco Bellei for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125, Katona’s teammate Nicolò Alvisi, and Niccolò Mannini on the TM Moto CRD Motosport machine will all be looking for home glory.  Riccardo Pini for MCV Motorsport TM is also right in the mix, and there is a real chance of an all-Italian podium on home hard-pack!

The Monster Energy MXGP of Trentino is one of the most celebrated events on the World Championship Motocross calendar, and it promises to deliver incredible racing across all four classes!

Tim Gajser didn’t seem to push for the maximum in Sardegna as the races were won by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rookie Lucas Coenen and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP veteran Romain Febvre, with the Frenchman taking the overall victory to narrow the gap at the top slightly to the Honda HRC man.

As mentioned above, Gajser is going for a record sixth GP win at this circuit, after MXGP wins in 2019, two in 2020, and one in 2022 to add to his first ever win back in MX2.  In contrast, while Febvre is at home in the hardpack and has won individual races in 2016, 2020, 2021, and last year’s first outing, he has never quite got to the top step at Pietramurata.  Now would be a very good time to break that duck!

Next one up in the points table is Glenn Coldenhoff, making his best start yet to an MXGP campaign for Fantic Factory Racing, taking two of the Italian brand’s first ever podium finishes and riding with supreme consistency. A race winner at Trentino in MX2, 11 years ago on a Suzuki, he also took second overall here in one of the 2021 events, so maintaining his good run is not out of the question.

Coenen has been electrifying in his first MXGP season, but he hasn’t enjoyed a good day at Trentino since winning in EMX125 in 2021, scoring just 10-9 finishes in MX2 last season. Maxime Renaux had an awful MXGP of Sardegna for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and faces a battle to be fit for Trentino, where he won his final MX2 GP in 2021. His teammate Jago Geerts has won here twice in MX2 and is starting to make progress in the MXGP class this season.

Coenen’s teammate Herlings is still getting back up to speed and is unlikely to add to his wins here from 2013, ’14, ’16, ’18 and ’21. When Jeffrey first won here in 2013, in MX2, it was Cairoli who took victory in MX1, as it was known then! TC222 took further wins in 2016, ’17, ’20, and ’21.  His first appearance here on an Italian machine, standing in for the injured Mattia Guadagnini, will gain a lot of attention, and who knows what that bit of Tony magic can produce on race day!

Kevin Horgmo sits in a brilliant sixth position in the Championship for Team Motul Honda Motoblouz SR, and he likes the Trentino circuit after an EMX250 win here in 2021.  Other former winners in Trentino are Ben Watson, who just scored his best result of the season for MRT Racing Team Beta, and Jeremy Seewer, who took both Fox Holeshot Awards for Aruba.it MX Factory Team last time out.

The top Italian in MXGP right now is Andrea Bonacorsi, who has progressed massively for Fantic Factory Racing, and after a great third place in what turned out to be his final ever MX2 race last year, he will have high hopes of performing well in front of his home fans for the first time on a 450!

With 49 riders entered, the circuit will be a full one in MXGP this weekend, and with the younger generation starting to push against their more experienced competitors, the class is building into a fascinating contest, and the tricky slopes of the Il Ciclamino circuit will test all of them in a cauldron-like atmosphere!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 215 Points; 2. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 181 Points; 3. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 156 Pts; 4. Lucas Coenen (BEL, KTM), 141 Points; 5. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 125 Points; 6. Kevin Horgmo (NOR, HON), 114 Pts; 7. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 110 Pts; 8. Andrea Bonacorsi (ITA, FAN), 104 Points; 9. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KAW), 86 Pts; 10. Mattia Guadagnini (ITA, DUC), 84 Pts.

The Championship leader’s red plate has been more of a pinball than ever before in the MX2 class this season, with six different winners in the first six races, and a seventh rider claiming two Qualifying Race wins!

Kay de Wolf broke that run of different winners by taking both of Sunday’s races with amazing riding at Riola Sardo, but he still holds just an eight-point lead over the top Red Bull KTM Factory Racing pilot, Simon Laengenfelder.  The German has won the second race at Trentino in each of the last two years, but is still searching for his first GP victory since the end of 2023, as well as his first possession of the red plate!

The last two winners of the MX2 class at Pietramurata then bring up the chase.  Liam Everts, now with Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, is just two points behind Laengenfelder after losing the red plate in Sardegna, while 2023 Trentino winner Andrea Adamo is just four markers further back for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing!  The home favourite did win the Qualifying Race here last year, but it’s worth noting that neither rider has actually won an individual GP race here, showing how consistency is the key around this difficult circuit!

Langenfelder’s teammate Sacha Coenen lies fifth in the standings, and will probably be hoping for a weekend without a big crash, after suffering some mighty get-offs in the last two GPs.  He will still carry plenty of speed, however, and after winning the last GP on the Italian mainland, in Maggiora last year, he cannot be counted out of a podium spot, not even the top one!

Thibault Benistant has shown great speed on hard pack this season, and scored two Qualifying Race wins for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, and is highly likely to challenge at the front after finishing second overall here last year!  He sits sixth in the standings ahead of Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Camden McLellan, who is coming off of his best ever result in MX2 last weekend.

Since taking his first career race win in the Spanish mud at Cozar, Honda HRC man Ferruccio Zanchi has had a tough time of it, and will be aiming to re-ignite his season on home ground. His rookie teammate Valerio Lata rounds out the top ten of the series, but has great memories of the Pietramurata circuit, having won a round here in EMX125 in 2021, as well as the last two years in EMX250!  Will that extra fire bring the teenage hotshot towards the front?

LOTTE VAN DRUNEN TO RACE MX2 IN TRENTINO AFTER SECURING A DOUBLE RACE VICTORY AT WMX ROUND 1 IN SARDINIA

In a performance that highlighted her immense talent and mental strength, defending FIM Women's Motocross World Champion Lotte van Drunen swept the opening round of the 2025 WMX World Championship with a perfect 1-1 showing at the deep sand of Riola Sardo last weekend. The 17-year-old Dutch wonder’s performance came despite battling some health challenges leading into the event.

"I lost three kilos during the week," van Drunen revealed in a post-race interview, her eyes still reflecting the mix of exhaustion and elation that defined her weekend. "There were moments I wasn't sure I could even race."

Those doubts never materialized on the track, where the De Baets Yamaha Supported MX rider attacked the notorious Sardinian sand with trademark aggression, gapping the field in both motos to manage a comfortable lead at the checkered flag.

The victory in Sardinia, while impressive, has quickly become background noise as van Drunen has confirmed she'll line up against the men in this weekend's MX2 Monster Energy Grand Prix of Trentino in Pietramurata, Italy.

"I need to do some hard pack training," she admitted. "And racing a rough GP track with some uphills and downhills is the best training possible, so that’s why I’ve decided to race MX2 in Trentino. I enjoy racing the boys and in MX2 and I also love Arco, I’ve had some good memories there."

This won't be van Drunen's first MX2 appearance—she raced and scored points at the MXGP of Belgium in Lommel last season—but Trentino represents her first Grand Prix on a hard-pack surface against the men.

When pressed about expectations, van Drunen shrugged off pressure. "I don't expect anything. The qualifying race is the same length as WMX, so I hope to put in 20 minutes plus two laps of good riding. Sunday is really about physical training and improving my technique and skills when the track gets really rough, rutty and bumpy."

As for whether Trentino signals the start of a broader MX2 campaign? "I think I will race Lommel again for sure," she confirmed. "I need to see, like I said I really enjoy it and it’s good for me. We will see – probably!"
