HERLINGS & L.COENEN BEAT THE HEAT IN THE WEST NUSA TENGGARA RAM QUALIFYING RACES

LOMBOK (Indonesia) 29 June 2024 – The FIM Motocross World Motocross Championship saw the first action of the Indonesian double header today, as the Ram Qualifying Races in both classes decided the order for tomorrow’s gate pick and gave the riders a chance to add to their points tallies as we start the second half of the campaign.

The circuit was heavily watered to combat the 30-plus degree heat, and several sections gave multiple line choices which resulted in some excellent racing!

In MXGP it was a first RAM Qualifying Race win of the year for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing legend Jeffrey Herlings, after moving past Team HRC’s Tim Gajser on the fourth lap and holding off a late charge from reigning World Champion Jorge Prado, who claimed second for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.

The race lead in MX2 was like hot potato, as first Sacha Coenen dropped out of the lead for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, then Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf also fell from the front! Ultimately it was Kay’s teammate Lucas Coenen who collected the win, while De Wolf recovered to take second ahead of Simon Laengenfelder, who took third for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.

After Gajser had topped the timesheets in Free Practice, Herlings just edged out the Slovenian for first gate pick in the early afternoon’s Time Practice session. Prado took third pick, showing no ill signs from his Italian GP crash.

Gajser levelled with Prado into turn one and steered the GASGAS rider to the outside, while Herlings tucked up the inside to hold second behind the Honda man.  Calvin Vlaanderen started up in third for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP, but spun sideways, and nearly off the bike, in the second corner.  He had to fight back through to an eventual fifth.

Brian Bogers grabbed third for Fantic Factory Racing, but landed short on the big triple jump at the top end of the circuit and although he didn’t crash, the Dutchman immediately pulled off the circuit and back to the pits. We wait for information on what went wrong in the end. Simultaneously, Mattia Guadagnini crashed on the same jump and was lucky to not get hit by riders behind him!  He went into the pits so that his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing mechanics could help to straighten out the bike.

This left Jeremy Seewer in third for Kawasaki Racing Team, until Prado leapt passed him with an excellent line through a wave section.  Jorge was also clearing that big triple jump when none of the top riders were doing so, and was using the time gained to haul in the leaders!

After jumping past Gajser, Herlings had built a small gap over his fellow five-time World Champion.  Prado got to the rear wheel of the Honda, and nearly landed on it, before pulling an excellent switchback move to take second place from the red plate holder!

Seewer held onto fourth, while Vlaanderen moved forward for fifth, ahead of the Ship to Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR pairing of Kevin Horgmo and Valentin Guillod. Jan Pancar finished a fine eighth for TEM Racing JP253 KTM, with Vlaanderen’s teammate Bonacorsi ninth, and Bogers’ teammate Glenn Coldenhoff claiming the final point in tenth.

Prado couldn’t quite get his claws into Herlings and had to be careful of a charging Gajser to hold on to second place. The gap at the top of the table is now 33 points after “The Bullet” took his first RAM Qualifying Race win since Latvia in 2023, over 12 months ago!

Gajser keeps leading the race for the RAM Truck driving Experience  in front of Prado.

Jeffrey Herlings: “It’s been a lot today for sure! It was last year in Latvia since I won a ‘Quali’. So it feels nice! It was not easy as you couldn’t make mistake on this track but anyway, I took the 10 points and I really look forward for tomorrow now!”

The three fastest in practice for MX2 were the same in both sessions, although Sacha Coenen led from Lucas and Kay in Free Practice and the red plate holder claimed the first gate pick in Time Practice.

Sacha Coenen once more bolted into the lead from the start ahead of De Wolf and, after he passed Laengenfelder coming out of turn two, Lucas Coenen.  However, the KTM speedster dropped the bike after the big triple jump and in getting back on track actually cut a corner.  This led to him being penalised by five positions, ending up as classified in 12th position.

De Wolf then led, until he then made a mistake by clipping a bank into a right-hand corner and sliding to the ground! Lucas gratefully inherited the lead and pressed on to win by a solid six seconds.  De Wolf managed to pick the bike up in third and set about catching and passing Laengenfelder, which he did on the penultimate lap!

Sacha Coenen’s teammates Liam Everts and Andrea Adamo matched their Championship positions in fourth and fifth, and Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Mikkel Haarup fought past Ferruccio Zanchi to claim sixth.  Jack Chambers was enjoying heat similar to his native Florida, and claimed eighth for Bike It MTX Kawasaki ahead of Haarup’s teammate Camden McLellan, with Oriol Oliver scoring the final point for WZ Racing.

Lucas Coenen’s win brings to just two points shy of Laengenfelder for second in the series, while De Wolf’s second gives him a 49-point lead heading into tomorrow’s MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara!

Lucas Coenen: “I knew the track was a bit tricky. It was an easy one for myself in the end. I made a good start and then I was following Kay (de Wolf) who was leading the race. He made a little mistake and then he crashed so I took the lead and could do my own race! Now let’s see tomorrow how it is going to be!”

KAY DE WOLF – RED PLATE IN INDONESIA

As Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider Kay de Wolf heads to Indonesia for the double header in Lombok, he remains the series points leader, with 473 points. His lead over Red Bull GasGas factory rider Simon Langenfelder is 48 points and that is a pretty good lead at the mid-point of the season.

Still though, with no GP win since round three in Sardinia, there must be some pressure to get back on track in these two rounds in Indonesia. The Dutchman had his worst round yet in Italy two weeks ago and will be looking at stopping the current run of Belgian GP winners.

In Italy and the famous Maggiora circuit, de Wolf went 7-6 for seventh overall and while his sizeable series points lead remains intact, he isn’t showing that same blazing speed and consistency from those first three rounds in Argentina, Spain and Sardinia.

"Not an easy weekend,” de Wolf said. “Still overall positive! I still have a good margin on the Red Plate, so I’m feeling good! Saturday was difficult; I had a crash on the opening lap, and the bars on my bike were bent, making it hard to fight back. I managed to get back up to 10th and earned one point. Then on Sunday, during the first race, I had a crash at the start because I couldn't avoid the riders in front of me. So, I had to work my way up to eighth from last, which I thought was okay. In the second race, it felt like a train ride; everyone was just lined up behind each other, and no one could really pass. I saw Simon and Haarup crash, and that was the only real event during the race. As the track dried, there was really only one line. So, in general, it was a positive weekend, and I’m looking forward to Indonesia!"

A week earlier in Latvia, de Wolf picked up 1-9 and fourth overall. Not 100% what he wanted, but with many of his rivals also making mistakes, there isn’t a lot of pressure on the red-head and that shows in his comments after the Kegums round.

"I had a mixed weekend, but I think there are still lots of positives to take from it. I had a really good Saturday, and the first race on Sunday was super positive with a win. But in the second race, I just made too many mistakes. I had two stupid crashes and should not have made them. I threw away a possible GP win and finished fourth overall instead. We are making progress every weekend, so this is the most important thing!"

Now, onto Lombok in Indonesia and you can be sure that de Wolf will want to contain his rivals and push for another Grand Prix victory. His talent is without question and with that large points lead; he has little pressure for now.

MXGP HEADS EAST FOR INDONESIA AND THE MXGP OF WEST NUSA TENGGARA

LOMBOK (Indonesia) 26 June 2024 – As the FIM Motocross World Championship begins the second half of the season, it’s that time of the year when we head to the world’s fourth most populous nation, and the largest archipelagic state on the planet, the Republic of Indonesia!  The first of two Grands Prix to be held at the Selaparang Circuit on the island of Lombok, the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara is named after the political Province which covers the western portion of the Lesser Sunda Islands.

The island of Lombok is roughly half the size of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, but home to roughly 4 million people, and the circuit itself is on the grounds of the disused airport of Selaparang, on the edge of the Province’s capital city of Mataram.  This will be the second year of action at this particular circuit, after the GP in 2023 saw overall victories for Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre in MXGP, and Jago Geerts for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Team in MX2.

The Indonesian islands have hosted 12 MXGP events at seven different circuits in total, the first being held in 1995, which saw the first ever Grand Prix win for French legend Sebastien Tortelli in the 125cc class at the Yogyakarta circuit, where he also won the following year as part of his first world title-winning campaign.  Yogyakarta hosted three 125cc GPs in total, with nearby Bandung hosting a solitary 250cc-only race in 1997.

More recently, the MXGP World Championship went to Pingkal Pinang in 2017 & ’18, Semarang in 2018 & ’19, and Palembang in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic restricted a return to Indonesia until 2022’s sole event at Sumbawa.

The 2024 MXGP World Championship has seen five straight rounds of the red plate swapping between reigning Champ Jorge Prado for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser before the recent MXGP of Italy.  Sadly for the Spaniard, a first lap collision and pile-up left him with a leg injury that took him out of the second race at Maggiora, leaving the Slovenian, who won the GP overall, with a 34-point gap at the top of the standings as the teams packed the flight cases for Indonesia.

Fortunately for Prado, he was left with nothing worse than heavy bruising and is able to race on two weeks later.  He still has a 37-point advantage over Jeffrey Herlings, who lies third for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  In the absence of the injured Febvre, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Calvin Vlaanderen, and Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jeremy Seewer moved up to fourth and fifth in the Championship table.

All of the top six in the series have tasted success in Indonesia, with Seewer winning his first ever Grand Prix back in 2017 at Pangkal Pinang’s muddy MX2 race, before Vlaanderen also took his very first GP victory at the same track in MX2 a year later!  Both Prado and Gajser have won three GPs in the islands, although Prado’s were all in MX2.  Herlings won both events in 2018 but hasn’t been to this part of the world since then.  Febvre won both Indonesian events in 2023, starting a five-GP winning streak for the Frenchman, who is sadly still out with his thumb injury from St Jean d’Angely.

The biggest question in MXGP is whether or not Prado will be able to return to the blinding pace of the leading riders in the class, and be able to haul back the points gap to Gajser as the second half of the season gets underway!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 511 Points;   2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 477 Points; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 440 Pts; 4. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 339 Pts; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 332 Pts; 6. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 327 Points; 7. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 302 Pts; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 274 Pts; ; 9. Brian Bogers (NED, FAN), 213 Pts; 10. Kevin Horgmo (NOR, HON), 206 Pts.

MX2 has delivered winning streaks throughout the season so far, with Kay de Wolf winning the first three rounds for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, then Liam Everts taking two in a row for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.  De Wolf’s teammate Lucas Coenen delivered his own hat-trick of victories through Galicia, France, and Germany, before his brother Sacha Coenen took his first career overall in Latvia and followed it up in Italy for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, making it a five-GP streak for the Coenen family! De Wolf has kept the Championship leader’s red plate since the opening round, with his current 48-point lead maintained through sheer consistency. Second in the standings for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing is Simon Laengenfelder, who has also stayed consistent but is still searching for his first GP win since August last year.

Third in the series is the rider who took his first career Grand Prix win in Indonesia last year with a perfect weekend, Lucas Coenen, who won in Sumbawa before Jago Geerts won at Lombok. As Tom Vialle won at Sumbawa in 2022, no other rider in MX2 has won a race in the Asian island nation.

The chase is on at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Everts and Andrea Adamo need to catch up from fourth and fifth in the standings, with the reigning Champion now lying over 100 points down on the current series leader.

Delvintor Alfarizi from JM Racing Astra Honda will be the hero for the locals as the rider is the only Indonesian representant in a OAT team. Competing at home with a lot of support from the fans will surely give Alfarizi another motivation to get his scoring tally going in the championship.

As always, the MX2 class has served up far more unpredictable racing than the points table would have you believe, so look out for some wide-open action again amongst the flat-out 250cc combatants!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 473 Points; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 425 Points;  3. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 421 Pts;  4. Liam Everts (BEL, KTM), 394 Pts; 5. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 368 Pts;  6. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 314 Pts; 7. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 300 Pts; 8. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 278 Pts; 9. COENEN DOMINATION

It is something very special when two brothers in any sport can both be successful and the two Coenen brothers, Lucas and Sacha are sure turning heads in the World of motocross. While it was Lucas who seemed to have more momentum than his twin brother, winning a Grand Prix in 2023 in Sumbawa, Indonesia, and three in a row in 2024, the first in Lugo, Spain, then St Jean d’Angely in France and finally, Teutschenthal in Germany.

One thing about brothers though, if one is having success, you can be pretty sure the other is working even harder and getting more motivated to not be left behind and it is clear, Sacha Coenen has been working hard and for now, nobody is leaving him behind.

His first ever Grand Prix victory came at Kegums in Latvia and last weekend, he added Grand Prix win number two at Maggiora in Italy. Now, as the two brothers head to Indonesia, for the next two rounds, you have to wonder which brother, gets the better of the other.

At Kegums in Latvia, Sacha Coenen finally showed what he is made of, winning his first ever Grand Prix and showing a little more than just speed. He had been the holeshot king in the MX2 class in recent times, but being fast and a good starter was derailed by a horrible run of crashes. In Latvia, that wasn’t the problem.

“Really nice to win my first GP,” Sacha said. “I’m feeling happy! I had good speed, and I knew I could do it! I had a really good start in the second race, and I just did my race. We need to focus and try to make every weekend a bit like this…and be on the podium as much as we can. Not many mistakes today and I kept on my wheels. This feels so nice.”

At Maggiora last weekend, Sacha Coenen reeled off win number two, although a small mistake nearly cost him. Two GP wins in a row and with confidence building, he might do the same as his taller brother Lucas, who has already won three in a row in 2024.

“I felt really good this weekend. I was leading the first race, but then had a tip-off and finished 4th. Not so bad but I made the holeshot in the second race, then led the whole way in the second. I carried on my good feeling from Latvia, and now I want to keep it going.”

In Germany around a month ago, Lucas Coenen picked up his third GP win in a row and his fourth in his career, and once again showed that he is a serious contender for the 2024 MX2 World championship.

"It felt fantastic to get this result, especially in Germany, to be honest. I was concerned we might struggle as we did last year, but now I've put that behind me. It was a perfect weekend. In the first race, I had a great battle with my teammate Kay, and in the second race, I aimed to do the same. He was ahead of me, so I pushed hard and wasn't sure if I could get past him. Then I saw him go down in a corner, which allowed me to overtake. It was an easier race from then on, but I'm just delighted to have another great weekend.”

The French Grand Prix proved another victory for the Belgian youngster, and everyone started saying that he might be the guy to beat in the MX2 championship, despite being well behind team-mate Kay De Wolf in the series points.

"The first race I was thinking about using the outside gate start like Kay,” Lucas said. “Then on the second one I gave it a try - and it all worked out. We pulled off two great motos today and the win on Saturday, so I’m super happy with this result - especially after last weekend in Lugo.”

Despite an injury, the second Spanish Grand Prix of the season handed Lucas Coenen the second Grand Prix victory of his career and the beautiful circuit in Lugo gave him confidence that he could reel off more wins and start to pull back the large points lead by Kay De Wolf.

"The last few races had been really tough on me, I kept getting injury after injury. I was not 100% yet with my shoulder, and I'm still battling with it, but in Spain, I managed to win. This was a brutal weekend. In the first race, I was frustrated because I couldn't pass anyone. Then in the second race, I just tried to focus on getting my rhythm going. I got into third and then into the lead, and I tried to control the gap as best as I could. I hope that now we have finally got the win, we can keep this pace up for the rest of the year and see where we end up.”

So, as the team ship their bikes off to Lombok, Indonesia, the two Belgian brothers will be training hard, testing long hours and trying to keep their run of victories alive. It is hard to bet against them as we head to Asia, but then again, it was in Indonesia, where the whole Coenen GP winning form started.

KARLIS REISULIS JOINS MONSTER ENERGY YAMAHA FACTORY MX2 TEAM FOR REMAINDER OF 2024 SEASON

Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to confirm that Karlis Reisulis will step up to MX2 with the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team for the remainder of the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship season.

Reisulis, alongside Rick Elzinga, will race a YZ250FM in MX2 following his impressive performance at the EMX250 round in Latvia, where he led several laps and finished second overall.

The 18-year-old Latvian, who has celebrated nine EMX podium finishes with Yamaha since 2021, will make his debut as a factory rider at the MXGP round of West Nusa Tenggara, Lombok, Indonesia, on June 29-30.

Both Reisulis and Elzinga will be joined by Thibault Benistant when the Frenchman is fit and ready to return to racing.

Karlis Reisulis

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider

“It’s an honour to have been given this opportunity to step up to MX2 on a factory Yamaha. I have dreamed of achieving this my entire life, so it really is like a dream come true. For me, it’s unreal to know I will finally be racing in the World Championship. I really want to thank Yamaha and everyone involved for this opportunity. I like the factory YZ250FM a lot. I felt good right from the first moment, and I think this will give me confidence as I take on the next chapter.”

Alexandre Kowalski

Yamaha Motor Europe Off-Road Racing Manager

“We are pleased to give Karlis this opportunity to step up to MX2. The MXGP of Italy saw several EMX250 riders competing in MX2, demonstrating that the European Championship series is doing an excellent job of preparing the riders for the next level. We look forward to seeing Karlis on factory material and how he performs in MX2. It will be important for him to enjoy the experience while using it to refine his skills. I believe it will help him mature as a rider and could be the springboard he needs to take the next step in his riding. We look forward to seeing what he can achieve.”
