RED PLATE HOLDERS GAJSER AND DE WOLF TAKE THE RAM QUALIFYING RACE WINS IN GERMANY

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 1 June 2024 – The MXGP World Motocross Championships burst back into life today with the RAM Qualifying Races that provided some scintillating racing at the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany!

Following some intense rain in the week leading up to the event, the track proceeded to dry out through the Saturday programme, until a storm washed over the circuit about thirty minutes before the gate dropped for the MX2 RAM Qualifying Race, and several showers followed it throughout the afternoon!

MXGP saw a continuation of the title fight, and represented the Championship in general, with Tim Gajser emerging victorious for Team HRC from yet another rain-affected race!  Kay de Wolf battled some issues as well as his competitors to grab a narrow victory for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, his first chequered flag for nearly two months, which assures him of keeping the red plate into the next round no matter what happens tomorrow!  It also puts him clearly in front of his teammate Lucas Coenen in the fight for the most RAM Qualifying Race wins of the season, the winner of which gets the use of a top-of-the-line RAM truck for six months at the end of the year!

The battle on the timesheets in both Free and Time Practice was fascinating, as Reigning World Champion Jorge Prado kept moving the bar to eventually top both sessions for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, but Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings were both right behind him, albeit a little over a second behind.

Although the holeshot went to Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing star Mattia Guadagnini, Prado took over the lead exiting the second corner, as Gajser got held up briefly in a battle with fast-starting home hero Henry Jacobi on his Sarholz KTM Racing Team machine! Herlings was quickly up into fifth, but Romain Febvre had only qualified in 27th for the Kawasaki Racing Team. The Frenchman battled hard through the pack, once more finding speed in the rain when others were floundering.

On lap six of the eventual twelve, Febvre dived past Herlings for fourth after they both got around Jacobi. The following two laps saw them both pass Guadagnini as well, but the crowd’s eyes were on the leading pair as Gajser closed in on Prado!

The Spaniard landed short on an uphill triple jump as the rain lashed down, giving the Slovenian the half-chance he wanted, and the impact of the landing had taken all of the fight out of the defending Champion.

So the big four of the series so far finished in their Championship order, while Febvre’s teammate Jeremy Seewer fought through to fifth position, and Pauls Jonass just kept his Standing Construct Honda ahead of a charging Calvin Vlaanderen, who had to fight through on his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP machine from outside of the top twenty on lap one!

This victory puts Gajser level with Prado on three RAM Qualifying Race win each, with Febvre just behind them on two!  So the fight really is on for that RAM Award this winter!

The forecast tomorrow is for better weather, and Gajser carries a six-point lead over Prado into the full Grand Prix races. It is still anybody’s guess as to who will emerge triumphant!

Tim Gajser: “It was good! I think I didn’t get the best jump out of the gate but it was helping that I was on the inside and I came out 3rd/4th. Then I make passes and I was behind Jorge (Prado) and he was riding good at the beginning but then I could sense that with the track becoming slippery that I could pass which I managed to do and thn made a little gapo to control the race. So… Yeah I’m super happy!”

Series leader Kay de Wolf was fastest in Free Practice ahead of the brothers, Sacha Coenen for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ahead of Lucas. That was until Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder, inspired by circuit-wide trackside support, leapt to the top of the Time Practice scoreboard by ninety thousandths of a second over De Wolf! Sacha was third, although a frustrated Lucas fell on his final flying lap to only go to the line in fifth!

That man De Wolf pulled a stunning holeshot from the inside gate, with Rick Elzinga challenging for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 and briefly taking the lead due to a small mistake on the first lap by his fellow Dutchman, who edged back ahead across the finish line jump!  Lucas Coenen fell on the second corner, holding up his brother in the process.

Meanwhile, the crowd favourite Laengenfelder was charging into third place, but he just charged a little too hard into a corner and tipped over, not for the last time either, as he dropped sadly down to 8th position at the flag. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing duo of Andrea Adamo and Liam Everts were making progress, the Belgian pulling quite possibly the pass of the season on Elzinga in a sweet cutback move that was like a piece of art!

Elzinga tried to fight off Mikkel Haarup in the final laps, but ultimately the Dane on the Monster Energy Triumph Racing machine got through to finish fourth.  De Wolf was battling a small technical issue and Adamo closed to within 1.2 seconds of the leader by the finish, with Everts holding on for third.  It is going to be mighty close again in MX2 tomorrow, but De Wolf has the comfort of a 59 point lead over Laengenfelder heading into GP race day at the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany!

Round eight of the 2024 MXGP World Championship is going to be tough to predict whatever the weather, and the crowd will be back louder than ever to make it something special! Don’t miss it!

Kay de Wolf: “It was a very difficult race! I struggled with clutch issues and so I didn’t have a clutch. That’s why Rick (Elzinga) passed me, I was really struggling. I’m really happy to get that win in the end! I’m still a little bit confused as there was so many things happening but this win really mean a lot to win without a clutch, so I’m very happy.

WORLDWIDE COVERAGE LIQUI MOLY MXGP OF GERMANY – THE TALKESSEL AWAITS

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 31 May 2024 – After a weekend of rest – or national races for some – the MXGP World Championship resumes for the first of another run of three events in as many weekends, the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany!  This intense season of MXGP is sure to make for compelling viewing as we reach the eighth round of the series!

The historic Talkessel circuit at Teutschenthal in the Eastern end of Germany welcomes its 27th MXGP event in the middle of a titanic battle for the red plate in MXGP, as it bounces back to five-time Champion Tim Gajser, who only has a five-point lead over the reigning World Champion Jorge Prado!  Romain Febvre and Jeffrey Herlings are also in the hunt and both took the chequered flag first at some point over the Monster Energy MXGP of France weekend, so they will look to carry that momentum into this GP!  All four of them have tasted success here so the fight is most definitely on!

The MX2 class will give the local fans their biggest hope of domestic success, as Simon Laengenfelder lies second in the standings behind Kay de Wolf, and after race wins in Argentina and Trentino, he will enjoy massive support in a GP he missed last year! However, Lucas Coenen, third in points and on a two-GP winning streak, was only denied a win by a broken chain here last year, and will be out for redemption! The winner of last year’s GP, Liam Everts, lies fourth in the Championship ahead of his teammate and reigning Champion Andrea Adamo, with all five top men keen and able to make big points on German soil!

For Slovenian fans that are unable to make the journey to Eastern Germany, our good friends at SPORT TV Slovenia, who have been broadcasting MXGP since 2010 and have a current agreement through to 2028,  will be onsite to cover all four GP races LIVE on Sunday with full Slovenian commentary. The booth could get noisy if Gajser does well again!

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

As always, MXGP fans can follow the races LIVE throughout the weekend. All you need to do is log onto www.MXGP-TV.com Saturday and Sunday, from wherever you are in the world.  Come and join us for what is turning out to be an amazing 2024 MXGP season!

MXGP IS BACK FOR MORE AT TEUTSCHENTHAL FOR THE LIQUI MOLY MXGP OF GERMANY

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 29 May 2024 – The 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship returns after a weekend off to launch into another three-week run of events, beginning this weekend with the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany at the legendary Talkessel circuit of Teutschenthal!

The compact German valley has hosted a massive 26 MXGP events in its history, with its first being in 1971.  The winner that day was Suzuki star Joel Robert, on his way to the fifth of his six career world titles.  We didn’t return to the Talkessel until 1993, when a rider named after the great Robert, Joel Smets, won the first of his 57 career Grands Prix on his thundering Husaberg.

The venue has been on the MXGP calendar every year since 1999, apart from 2013, when it hosted the Motocross of Nations instead, and the pandemic-affected season of 2020.  Antonio Cairoli holds the record for the most Grand Prix wins at the circuit with five, amassing the most individual race wins as well with nine.  All four of the leading MXGP contenders have seen success in Teutschenthal.  The MX2 class sees the home crowd’s biggest hope for a German winner, with Simon Laengenfelder currently sitting second in the points for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing.

Riders who lined up at the 2013 Motocross of Nations and will still race in 2024 include two of the Swiss team that day, Jeremy Seewer of the Kawasaki Racing Team, and Team Ship to Cycle Honda Motoblouz SR rider Valentin Guillod. Fantic Factory Racing stalwart Glenn Coldenhoff was also there that day, although from the three, only Guillod got into the top ten.

The EMX250 Championship will return for their fifth round, with Mathis Valin bolting the red plate onto his Bud Racing Kawasaki after his home GP, and he now leads from Cas Valk, who is 23 points behind for Gabriel SS24 KTM, with previous leader Valerio Lata dropping to third for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors after scoring only 8 points at St, Jean d’Angely.

Teutschenthal also welcomes the FIM Women’s World Motocross Championship, back for the first time since 2018, when Courtney Duncan took the victory! Home heroine Larissa Papenmeier has won there twice in the past, and she will lean on the local support to lift her from 7th in the series.  Kiara Fontanesi, winner in 2015, is third in the points behind the flying teenage pair of Lotte van Drunen, who will carry the red plate for De Baets Yamaha, and RFME GASGAS Factory Juniors star Daniela Guillen, who is only nine points behind as they reach the halfway point of the series, this being round four of seven for WMX in 2024.

The 2024 MXGP title race is proving to be the absolute classic that the dazzling line-up promised at the start of the year. The previous two MXGP World Champions, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Jorge Prado for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, are just five points apart at the top of the standings after the Slovenian won the Monster Energy MXGP of France, while Romain Febvre sits just 24 points further back for the Kawasaki Racing Team after bravely fighting through a thumb injury sustained in Free Practice.

Jeffrey Herlings of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team is now fourth in the series and 61 points behind the leader, after winning race two at St Jean d’Angely. With the weather forecast showing more rain possible for the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany, Herlings could be the man to beat at the German circuit.

Of the active MXGP field, Gajser has won the most at Teutschenthal, taking the MX2 trophy in his first title year of 2015, plus MXGP victories in 2019, ’21, and ’22.  Herlings and Prado have each won three at the Talkessel, with the current Champion taking the honours last season. Febvre has only one overall win there, taking the MXGP class in 2015.  His 2024 teammate Jeremy Seewer also won in MX2 back in 2017.

With a 43-rider entry list there should be a full gate in MXGP, with a large swell of local wildcards hoping to perform well in front of the usually large and raucous crowd! Tom Koch is the highest-placed German in the standings for the KTM Kosak Team, and the Schmicker Racing team will also be enjoying its home Grand Prix with its riders Corneliues Toendel and Adam Sterry.

The fight is well and truly still on in MXGP, both at the sharp end and throughout what is sure to be a crowded valley, both on and off the track!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 348 Points;  2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 343 Points; 3. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 319 Points ; 4. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 287 Pts; 5. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 253 Pts; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 234 Pts; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 223 Pts; 8. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 200 Pts; 9. The MX2 class has provided some wild racing in 2024, with the first six riders in the standings all taking a race win on either Saturday or Sunday, and so far the Grand Prix victories have gone in waves, with Kay de Wolf taking the first three for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, Liam Everts the next two for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, then De Wolf’s teammate Lucas Coenen taking the most recent two rounds.  De Wolf’s consistency has seen him stretch out a 52-point lead in the Championship, and the big home favourite Simon Laengenfelder is the next rider along, scoring well in every race apart from the second one in Portugal, where he crashed and broke his collarbone.

Struggling on with plating over the injury for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, his speed has been climbing again, and he will be looking to make the most of the home support with the volume of the valley sure to rise with every move forward he makes! Lucas Coenen’s two wins have seen him rise back to third, just 7 points behind the German.

Everts and his teammate Andrea Adamo, the reigning Champion in the class, are fourth and fifth, with the other winner, Thibault Benistant of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2, sadly likely to be out for Germany after hurting his back in a big crash in France.

Everts took the overall win at Teutschenthal last year, although he had a slight piece of fortune as Lucas Coenen suffered a broken chain whilst leading race two, after dominating the first. Both De Wolf and Laengenfelder suffered injuries before last year’s event, so with the top five all healthy, the Liqui Moly MXGP of Germany could prove just as unpredictable as every other round this year!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 342 Points; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 290 Points; 3. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 283 Pts; 4. Liam Everts (BEL, KTM), 268 Pts; 5. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 257 Pts;  6. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 226 Pts; 7. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 216 Pts; 8. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 211 Pts; 9. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 159 Pts; 10. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI). 126 Pts.

GAVIN TOWERS JOINS VRT YAMAHA OFFICIAL EMX250

Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to welcome American Gavin Towers to the VRT Yamaha Official EMX250 team as a replacement for Janis Reisulis, who is side lined due to injury.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, USA, Towers is best known for his performances in AMA Supercross in which he has celebrated six phenomenal podium finishes. With the support of Yamaha Motor USA, Star Racing and Monster Energy, Towers has gained an opportunity to test his skills against the best motocross riders in the world.

Having signed a deal to campaign a GYTR-kitted YZ250F in the remainder of the EMX250 Championship, Towers will make his EMX250 debut at the fifth round of the series in Teutschenthal, Germany, on June 1-2.

Gavin Towers

VRT Yamaha Official EMX250 Rider
“I'm so happy for this opportunity. I've always wanted to come and try out racing in Europe, and when the opportunity came about I had to jump at it. Some close people in my corner helped me get this together and I couldn't be happier about it. It means a lot to me to come over here and have these amazing people help me out. My expectations are to go out and learn as much as I can. It's going to be quite an adjustment but I'm ready for it!”

Thorsten Lentink

Yamaha Motor Europe MX Racing Specialist

“We are delighted to have Gavin join us from America, especially during this tough season where we have, unfortunately, lost a few of our stars through injury. With the support of Yamaha Motor USA, Star Racing and Monster Energy, we have made it possible to give this young, talented rider the chance to gain some experience on the world stage through the European Championship EMX250 series, with the view of understanding his potential for the future. The plan is to let Gavin find his feet on the VRT Yamaha Official EMX250 team and the GYTR kitted YZ250F in the EMX250 series before making some wildcard appearances in MX2.”
