CALVIN VLAANDEREN – CHASING THE BIG THREE

For Monster Energy Yamaha rider Calvin Vlaanderen, the 2024 season has been possibly the best season of his career, a career that starts in 2017 in the MX2 class and has seen him win GPs in both MX2 and MXGP, and pick up victory at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations victory with The Netherlands, but when it comes to putting together the best results over a period of time, there must be questions that this year is his best.

“Every year I make steps and improve,” Vlaanderen said. “If you look at the results over the last few years, I have just gotten better and better. Now, coming into a factory team, it has given me that extra boost that I needed. I have the people behind me, a factory bike definitely helps, the last percentages together, to be able to fight up front. That is definitely the difference.”

For whatever reasons, the South African born Dutchman has a love affair with Indonesia, and it was at the two Lombok GPs that he showed his best form of the season, finishing with two podium finishes and a lot of confidence.

“For sure. First weekend in Lombok I beat Tim and then the second one, I beat Jorge. First race (in the second Lombok GP), I caught Prado and passed him, and he won the first one in Lombok, so that gives me a lot of confidence, to know that I can also do it. So, going forward, I will take that in my pocket and know that I can not only be on the podium, but I can also go for wins.”

The podium in the first GP in Indonesia was a long road back inside the top three and Vlaanderen knew that he was doing all the right things to battle with the big three of the sport, Gajser, Prado and Herlings.

“Two years ago, I was on the podium, with the win in Sardinia and the same year I tied for a win in Lommel. Last year I had one race win, but my best wasn’t enough to be on the box. To finally be on the box feels really good. I am battling all multi-time World champions, with Jorge (Prado), Jeffrey (Herlings) and Tim (Gajser). So, to be up there, it just isn’t easy.”

Since returning to Europe for the races in Loket and Lommel, it was again doing the hard yards and trying to maintain that Indonesian form, and while he remains fourth in the World, he returned from Indonesia not feeling well and paid the price.

“It’s been a physically tough weekend at Loket. I picked up a sickness bug after Indonesia, but I still went to Loket with high expectations. Overall, I was satisfied with Loket and happy to keep this momentum going. The Lommel weekend was going really well until race two. In the first race, everything went to plan, and I had a good start, kept the top two in sight and felt like I rode well for third. Then in Race Two, I tangled with someone in the first turn and then crashed at the end of lap one. I was coming through the pack well, re-passing riders I’d already passed, but then crashed again.  A tough weekend in the end, and now it’s on to Sweden.”

So, with Uddevalla in his eyesight, Vlaanderen will try and regain that Lombok form and return to the podium. Currently fourth in the MXGP championship points and with only Gajser, Prado and Herlings ahead of him, his season remains a huge success, but a GP win, or more podiums will make his season much more enjoyable.

HISTORICAL MOMENT AS DUCATI AND ANTONIO CAIROLI GET READY TO RACE IN ARNHEM

Uddevalla (Sweden) 8 August 2024 – We knew they were soon to be with us, and now it’s official – the Ducati Corse Factory MX Team will make its World Championship Motocross debut at the MXGP of The Netherlands, on the 17th and 18th of August at the circuit of Arnhem!

Many fans of all nationalities are excited to see the manufacturer, that has dominated tarmac-based motorcycle racing in recent years, hit the dirt with their Ducati Desmo450 MX machine, but Italian fans in particular will be excited to see that nine-time World Motocross Champion Antonio Cairoli will be the rider that takes it onto the track for the first time!

The Sicilian Motocross legend, winner of 94 Motocross Grands Prix, including eight events in the Netherlands itself, was last on track at an MXGP event in November 2021 at Mantova, the end of his final full season. However, after a glorious victory with Team Italia on home ground in 2021, he also raced with the #1 plate at the 2022 Motocross of Nations in the USA.

The Ducati machine has also been racing in the Italian Championship this season, both with Cairoli and his fellow test pilot Alessandro Lupino, winning several races between them. Ducati will also be the tenth manufacturer to compete in the 2024 Motocross World Championships showing that it is the ultimate stage for off-road machines to show their capabilities.

The world of Motocross will be watching as this iconic manufacturer takes on one of the toughest challenges in sport – the MXGP World Championship!

Infront Moto Racing CEO, David Luongo; "Today, mark an historical moment for MXGP as we welcome the coming of a prestigious manufacturer, Ducati, which is marking a new step in the development of this great sport. Thanks to the work we have been doing for decades, we are elevating the popularity of MXGP worldwide. This is the best platform to develop prototype motorcycles for the market and we wish them years of great success in our sport. This new addition will continue to elevate the competition in the future with the other official manufacturers and we cannot wait to witness this arrival.

It's also a great pleasure to have Antonio Cairoli, a true legend of our sport, to be back in Arnhem. I’m sure that many fans will be present to witness his comeback which will be a great moment of sport.

I want to thank Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali, General Manager Ducati Corse Off-Road Division Paolo Ciabatti and Ducati Corse Factory MX Team Manager Marco Maddii for this exciting new project, and I welcome all Ducati to MXGP!"

DUCATI MAKES ITS MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT IN THE NETHERLANDS WITH TONY CAIROLI AND THE DESMO450 MX

Borgo Panigale (Bologna, Italy), 8 August 2024 – Ducati is preparing for a historic debut in the MXGP World Championship with Tony Cairoli. The nine-time world champion will compete in the Netherlands on the Desmo450 MX, the motorbike that will take part in next year's MXGP World Championship and go into production, marking the Borgo Panigale company's entry into the off-road specialist segment. The Dutch Grand Prix, to be held on August 17th and 18th on the Arnhem track, is an important step in the development of the Borgo Panigale motorbike, with the aim of participating in the entire championship in 2025 and will be the first round of the World MXGP.

The development programme of the Borgo Panigale prototype will then continue August 31st and September 1st at Castiglione del Lago, in the fifth round of the Italian Championship, where Alessandro Lupino leads the general classification with two rounds to go after the brilliant results obtained in the last round of the Italian MX Championship at Ponte a Egola. In the Tuscan race Cairoli, on his return to competition, won the first heat and Alessandro Lupino, by winning the overall, took the lead in the championship, thus confirming the level of competitiveness already achieved by the Desmo450 MX.

·    The nine-time World Champion will compete in the MXGP on August 17th and 18th in Arnhem

·    The participation in the Dutch GP will contribute to the preparation of the MXGP World Championship scheduled for 2025

·    After the Dutch GP the development programme of the Desmo450 MX will continue September 1st with the Italian Championship round in Castiglione del Lago, where Alessandro Lupino will defend his leadership

SCANDINAVIA WELCOMES MXGP TO UDDEVALLA FOR THE MXGP OF SWEDEN

Uddevalla (Sweden) 7 August 2024 – After a week’s break, the FIM Motocross World Championship fires into the first of its last three-week run, the MXGP of Sweden for round 15 at the Glimminge Motorstadion venue near Uddevalla on the south-western coast of the country.

Sweden was one of the original powerhouse nations of World Motocross, claiming eight of the first nine World Championships ever to be held, and only Belgium and France can boast more World Champions than the Nordic nation.

The Uddevalla circuit has one of the longest histories of any in the 2024 calendar, with the first World Championship Grand Prix being held there in 1958, won by home hero and future double World Champion Sten Lundin on a Swedish Monark machine! There have been 25 GPs at the venue over the years, with the record of 6 GP wins here being held jointly by the legends Stefan Everts and Antonio Cairoli.

From the current field of today’s riders, it’s Kawasaki Racing Team pilot Jeremy Seewer who has won the most here with three victories in total, including the last two events in MXGP, plus an MX2 win in 2017!

The MXGP class will see a continuation of the stellar three-way scrap for the title, as red plate holder Tim Gajser holds a 24-point advantage for Team HRC over Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, while Jeffrey Herlings is only 14 points further back for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing after an incredible win at Lommel!

The MX2 class is getting more spaced out in the standings, with Kay de Wolf holding a 65-point lead over his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Lucas Coenen, but the racing is still tough to predict, especially as last year’s winner Simon Laengenfelder is coming off a race win at Lommel for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing and is hungry for his first overall GP victory of 2024!

The EMX250 European Championships will again be in action in Sweden, and Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Mathis Valin still leads by 13 points ahead of Gabriel SS24 KTM teamster Cas Valk, with Valerio Lata just five points further back for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors! Sweden’s best hopes of success lie with August Frisk, who has been in the top ten several times this season.

The EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing European Championship series returns from a near two-month break for the first of a three-week run, With Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 star Noel Zanocz leading the Championship by 14 points over Gyan Doensen for Racestore KTM Factory Rookies. Freddie Bartlett and Sandro Sols will fly the flag for Sweden after several top ten results this year!

None of the big three who are fighting for the world title in 2024 have got particularly good records around the Uddevalla circuit.  Jeremy Seewer has taken the overall victory in each of the last two seasons, and would dearly love to continue that winning streak! Before that, it was current Fantic Factory Racing star Glenn Coldenhoff who won overall in 2019, although Gajser did take the second race win that day.

Current red plate holder Gajser took the overall back in 2017 in MXGP, as well as in his MX2 title year of 2015, while Herlings has to look back to his dominant MX2 years for victories in 2013 and 2014. A broken chain here in 2017 put paid to his world title hopes in his first MXGP season, and he hasn’t raced here since!

This is one of the few circuits on the calendar where Jorge Prado hasn’t won a GP, although he did win individual races in 2017 and ’19 in MX2 and last season’s first outing.  Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre took a double victory in 2015, plus a race win in 2017, as well as finishing second overall last year.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Calvin Vlaanderen is still fourth in the series, and he took an MX2 race win here in 2019, so he has good history here and is in good form despite a crash-ruined second race in Lommel. Sadly, his teammate Jago Geerts, MX2 winner here in 2022, will not be here after his return in Flanders did not go to plan.

JK Racing Yamaha rider Isak Gifting will be fit and is looking forward to his home GP after a frustrating sequence of races since Indonesia, while Alvin Ostlund will be looking for more points after scoring one at Lommel. The two Swedes are 17th and 19th in the Championship.

The lack of a clear form guide makes it difficult to guess who will come out on top in 2024, but with another big sand GP to come the week after, you can bet that Gajser will be particularly eager to get a result this weekend before they return to Herlings and Prado’s playground!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 705 Points;   2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 681 Points; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 667 Pts; 4. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 507 Pts; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 479 Pts; 6. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 419 Pts; 7. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 405 Points; 8. Kevin Horgmo (NOR, HON), 317 Pts; 9. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 274 Pts; 10. Valentin Guillod (SUI, HON), 273 Pts.

The MX2 World Championship saw a huge momentum swing towards Kay de Wolf at the MXGP of Flanders, but as always this season, the result is never a foregone conclusion and his teammate Lucas Coenen will be going all-out to make sure that the fight is not over!

Neither of them have particularly fond memories of Uddevalla, although Lucas did win an EMX250 race here in 2022. Last year, he crashed spectacularly in qualifying, while De Wolf was out injured. Kay had a so-so 7-7 scorecard here in 2022.

Ater his surprise win in race two at Lommel, Simon Laengenfelder could have high hopes for a great result this weekend, after finishing on the podium in each of the last two years here, including last year’s overall victory. He has just 12 points between himself and Lucas Coenen for second in the series, and he is the only rider in MX2 this year to have won a GP in Sweden.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s reigning World Champion Andrea Adamo won race two last year to claim third overall, with his teammate Liam Everts taking second overall with 2-3 finishes. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 pilot Rick Elzinga scored his best race finish of the whole year with third in race one, and is on form after his best GP result yet at Lommel.

The top Swede in the series, Leopold Ambjörnson, had one of his best GPs yet at Lommel for Team Leoparden Racing, so will be keen to show his form on home ground, as will Young Motion Powered by Resa pilot Arvid Lüning, who scored top 15 in each race at Lommel for the first time this season.

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 683 Points; 2. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 618 Pts;  3. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 606 Points;  4. Liam Everts (BEL, KTM), 556 Pts; 5. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 465 Pts; 6. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 457 Pts;  7. Rick Elzinga (NED, YAM), 429 Pts; 8. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 391 Pts; 9. Oriol Oliver (ESP, KTM), 255 Pts; 10. Ferruccio Zanchi (ITA, HON), 254 Pts.

David Luongo Editorial - MXGP Mag Issue 130

Dear MXGP fans,

The end of July is marking the entrance into the last part of the FIM Motocross World Championship. With four Grand Prix which took place in the last 5 weeks, the rhythm accelerated for the biggest pleasure of our followers.

The beautiful island of Lombok hosted two GP this year. As usual, the local authorities welcomed all the attendants with a fantastic ceremony in the city of Mataram. Thousands of locals came to support the MXGP and MX2 stars during these incredible events.

In MXGP, the battle continued to gain into intensity with Jorge Prado, Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings fighting for every point. Jorge Prado won the MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara and Jeffrey Herlings the MXGP of Lombok. Calvin Vlaanderen was able to complete both podiums for the first time of the season.

In MX2, the teammates of Neestan Husqvarna, Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen are trusting the top position of the podium Grand Prix after Grand Prix.

Going back to Europe, the MXGP of Czech Republic took place at the historical track of Loket, which also hosted the European Championship finals of the EMX65cc and EMX85cc as support classes. Almost 300 riders participated to this weekend of racing in all the classes and more than 400 bikes went to technical control. It is a fantastic milestone for our sport and a great testimonial for the next generations that will make their ride to MXGP in the coming years!

Finally, the Hell of Lommel took place last weekend. One of the most awaited and demanding Grand Prix in the year. It was a great success with probably one of the best crowds ever present at the Lommelwood venue. All the fans that were present could witness the amazing MXGP races that took place with the great battle between Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings. Romain Febvre marked his comeback of racing with third overall. In MX2 Kay de Wolf extended his lead on Lucas Coenen.

On the media side, we are glad to share that TikTok MXGP platform reached 300.000 followers last week, thank you for following us!

After a break this weekend, the next MXGP will be running at the beautiful track of Uddevalla for the MXGP of Sweden and you can be sure that it will bring a lot of action.

See you in Sweden or on MXGP-TV.com!

LOTTE VAN DRUNEN ON BREAKING BARRIERS & BANGING BARS WITH THE BOYS IN MX2

Lotte van Drunen is fast becoming one of the biggest stars in motocross. At the MXGP of Flanders, this super friendly 16-year-old made history by scoring a point at the 14th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Lommel, Belgium, in MX2. But what made Lotte's decision to race MX2 so ground-breaking was not just her age or the fact that she is female but the track she chose for this challenge.

Lommel is recognized worldwide as one of the most challenging motocross tracks on the planet. Its sea-deep sand and brutal bumps make it the ultimate test of both rider and machine, often breaking even the best in MXGP. This is why many of the MXGP paddock choose Lommel as their training base during the winter. The track demands maximum physical and mental strength; any sign of weakness, and the track will eat you alive.

For Lotte, racing against the men in MX2 at the most difficult track on the calendar added to the thrill. "I've always loved racing the boys," she said. "Now I've got the opportunity to race here in Lommel. It's something I've always wanted to do. And why Lommel? Well, why not? I was basically born in the sand. I've done so many laps in the sand throughout my life, ever since I was on 65cc, and I have always loved it. I never give up, whereas a lot of people stop when the track gets too rough or too difficult."

"When most people go home because they're tired and the track is too rough to ride, I stay out there riding and just keep going. I think this is why I am so good now."

Lotte approached her first MX2 race with realistic expectations but managed to surprise everyone by scoring a championship point. "I didn't expect too much from it, honestly, but now I've got one point, so it's unbelievable!" she smiled. "It was really weird because in WMX, I am the one passing everyone, but in MX2, I was the one getting passed. I enjoyed it, though. It was really tough, but I definitely learned a lot from this."

So, what exactly did she learn? "I think pushing till the last lap was the hardest part because the track is so rough here," she explained. "Especially in the second race, because after the first race, I was already so tired, and then I had to go again. But it was really fun, especially to leave with a point—that definitely made it all worth it. I also think if I get a bit stronger, I can ride with the same style as the top boys. Right now, I need to change my style a little bit because I am just 16 years old and a girl, but in a few more years, as I get stronger, I think I can ride like them."

Having crossed 'racing the boys in MX2' off her bucket list, Lotte's next big event will be the sixth round of the FIM Women's Motocross World Championship, held on home soil in Arnhem, The Netherlands. She will arrive at the penultimate round with a 3-point lead in the championship. "I am really looking forward to my home GP and racing in front of my home fans. I won there last year and know I am fast in the sand. I am prepared for it, so I know I have a really good shot at winning again, as I did last year. The goal is to win there with a big gap and then go into the final round in Turkey with a lead so I can wrap up the championship."

TIM GAJSER – ONTO SWEDEN

Heading to Uddevalla in Sweden next week, the MXGP championship continues to heat up, with all three leading riders, Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado and Jeffrey Herlings winning a Grand Prix in the last month. Of course, Prado won the opening round in Indonesia (MXGP of West Nusa Tenggara), with Gajser winning in Loket, and Herlings taking wins in the MXGP of Lombok and Lommel last weekend.

As we turn our attention to Sweden, the series leader, Gajser could be something of a favourite to add Sweden to his GP victories and stop the momentum of his fellow five-time World champion, Herlings and of course, defending champion, Prado.

The HRC man has won in Sweden on two occasions, in 2015 and 2017 and he has always shown good speed there, finishing fifth in 2014, second in 2019 and 2022 and an unfortunate 10th last year (after missing most of the season with injury). Generally, Gajser could very easily, be the man to take victory in Sweden in a little over a weeks’ time.

For Gajser, the win in Loket was very important after losing both GPs in Indonesia and seeing his series points lead shrinking. The HRC factory rider had never won in Loket, and it was celebrated with a huge turn-out of Slovenian fans.

“It was amazing to finally get a win here in Loket,” Gajser said. “I’ve had some good moments here, but never been able to take the victory so this is just a great feeling. I didn’t have the best first race, but we worked together as a team to improve things for race two and I immediately felt a lot better. I got a good start, put pressure on the leader and then made a move midway through and controlled the rest of the race. A big thank you to all the team, and to all the fans Slovenian fans who create such an awesome atmosphere and who support me around the whole track. I’m glad I could finally repay them in Loket.”

However, soon after that success at Loket, came the MXGP of Flanders, at the toughest circuit in the World, Lommel. The deep sand in Belgium was unkind to the five-time World motocross champion. Until now, it was the worst Grand Prix of his season as he finished with 5-4 scores.

“It was tough to find the flow here this weekend and on a track like this, it made my life really difficult. In the end, fourth overall on a day that wasn’t my best, isn’t too bad, so I have to stay positive and focus on making sure that I do better in Sweden next time out. It will be a totally different challenge, but we will work hard on making that happen.”

Now, onto Sweden, whereas we have mentioned, he has had success and no doubt, with both Prado and Herlings continuing to close that points gap, the Honda man needs to make a statement. You get the feeling; he will arrive at Uddevalla with a lot of motivation to prove a point to everyone that he is the red plate holder.
