WORLDWIDE COVERAGE MXGP OF TRENTINO | EXPERIENCE THE MOUNTAINOUS SPECTACLE THIS WEEKEND

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino) 12 April 2024 – Set amongst some of the most spectacular scenery of the entire season, round four of the MXGP World Championship, will explode on to your screens across the globe, allowing you to enjoy the full experience of one of the best events in the calendar, the MXGP of Trentino.

In MXGP, the big question has to be, “Who can beat Jorge Prado?”, as the defending MXGP World Champion has gone up a gear for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing and won all but one Grand Prix race, taking home all three 1st place trophies from the opening three rounds.

Team HRC leader Tim Gasjer enjoys a boost in trackside support at Trentino, as thousands of fans from his home country of Slovenia flock to Northern Italy, bringing smoke flares and any noisy items they can bring to add to the incredible atmosphere of this Grand Prix. The five-time World Champion will be looking to tap into this in his efforts to prevent the reigning Champ from extending his 17-point lead in the Championship.

The MX2 World Championship has so far seen similar domination for Kay de Wolf of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, who has extended his points lead to 29 over Simon Laengenfelder of Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing. The Dutchman has won each GP so far, although reigning World MX2 Champion Andrea Adamo returns to the site of his first overall victory for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing last season, and is the undisputed major hope for a home winner for all of the local supporters who will flood the circuit this weekend.

Both classes are sure to provide incredible entertainment across the weekend, and MXGP fans will be intrigued to see how this season develops at what is sure to be a memorable Grand Prix!

Italian broadcaster RAI will once more be LIVE onsite for native language commentary this weekend, and there will be extensive worldwide coverage across all of our usual partners across the globe.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Trentino, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

INSIDE MXGP WITH THE BEAST OF THE BEACH TODD KELLETT

In the fast-paced world of racing, unexpected opportunities can catapult riders into new territories. For Todd Kellett, the reigning FIM Sand Races World Cup Champion, such an opportunity arose when Yamaha extended an invitation to race a factory YZ450FM at the MXGP of Sardegna, in Riola-Sardo.

Todd, fresh from epic victories at the Enduropale du Touquet and Enduro del Verano, initially had his sights set on a well-deserved holiday. However, opportunities to ride factory bikes don’t come along every day and the chance to race MXGP aboard a fully-fledged YZ450FM proved too enticing to resist.  "I fancied my chances to come to help the guys out" Todd grinned. "I was in my holidays, completely relaxed, but what an opportunity. I certainly couldn't turn it down!"

"Beach racing and MXGP are two totally different sports," he explained, "My dad said it best. It's like a tennis player, playing squash." Amidst the excitement, the beast of the beach found himself facing unfamiliar challenges.

"Recovery is more important in MXGP," he admitted, acknowledging the stark contrast between beach racing and MXGP. "In beach racing, once you're done, you're done for the day, you know, you're going home until next weekend. So here it is really important, and perhaps difficult for someone like me to try and recover after each session on the bike."

Adjusting to the tighter tracks and the intricacies of the factory bike presented a learning curve. Yet, the 27-year-old Brit’s attitude and determination shone through as he quickly adapted to the new environment. "The bikes, yeah, they're different," he acknowledged. "But at the same time, after a couple of days, I managed to find it quite homely. The ergonomics of the bike is very similar."

Despite the initial hurdles, Todd showed his incredible grit. After binning it in Race One, the ‘98’ bounced back with a vengeance in Race Two and scored five MXGP World Championship points, ending his day with a hard-fought 16th-place finish. "It was an incredible experience to race in Sardinia", he smiled, "I just want to say a massive thanks to Yamaha and everyone involved for the opportunity. Over the last two weeks, I've put in a lot of hard work, which paid off in Race Two. It was a little bit frustrating to crash in both races, but overall, it has been a really good weekend."

The latest episode of "Inside MXGP" goes behind the scenes at the MXGP of Sardinia, following Lotte van Drunen to her first Grand Prix win of 2024 and the Sand Races World Cup winner Todd Kellett in his Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team guest appearance.

MXGP ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH MIPS AS THE OFFICIAL SAFETY PARTNER OF THE FIM MOTOCROSS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino) 12 April 2024 – Infront Moto Racing is happy to welcome MIPS, a global leader in helmet-based safety, as the Official Safety Partner of the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship.

For 2024, you will find the distinctive yellow Mips logo along the tracks, signifying the commitment to raising awareness of rotational motion and advancing helmet safety standards. The partnership will also include the first international Safety Symposium, a gathering of partner brands, riders, media, and industry leaders to educate and engage in insightful conversations around helmet safety and Mips’ mission to lead the world to safer helmets.

David Luongo, CEO of Infront Moto Racing: “We are delighted to welcome Mips as the Official Safety Partner of the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship. Safety is a top priority in our sport, and this collaboration underscores our commitment to advancing helmet safety standards. With Mips' innovative technology and dedication to raising awareness, we look forward to promoting safer racing environments for our athletes and fans worldwide."

Max Strandwitz, CEO of Mips: “We’re thrilled to become MXGP's Official Safety Partner,” said. “Helmet safety is paramount in the high-speed, high-risk world of off-road racing. With the MXGP’s global footprint, we have the chance to connect with and educate motorcycle enthusiasts around the world. Our upcoming Safety Symposium also presents a unique opportunity to showcase the latest advancements and educate on the dangers of rotational motion. At Mips, we see industry standards as a baseline, not a finish line."

The Mips safety system can already be found inside the helmets of many top MXGP and MX2 racers, including Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, a five-time World Champion and Team Mips member. The success of riders wearing helmets equipped with the Mips safety system is undeniable. As racers with Mips technology appeared on the podium 42 times (MXGP – 14, MX2 – 28) and won nearly half (16/38 motos) of the races in 2023. The 2024 season is already off to a strong start. Tim Gajser earned his first race win of the season in Argentina and currently sits in second place overall as the championship gears up for the MXGP of Trentino on April 13th and 14th.

About Mips

Mips specializes in helmet-based safety and is a world leader in this area. Based on an ingredient brand business model, Mips' safety system is sold to the global helmet industry. The technology is based on over 25 years of research and development together with the Royal Institute of Technology and the Karolinska Institute, both located in Stockholm, Sweden. Mips’ headquarters, with 82 employees engaged in research and development, sales, marketing, and administration, is in Stockholm, where its product and technology test facility is also located. The Mips share is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm.

Currently, Mips has partnered with over 150 helmet manufacturers. Since its inception, the Mips® safety system has been included in more than 1,000 helmet models worldwide.

BACK TO THE MAINLAND WITH A QUICK TURNAROUND FOR THE MXGP OF TRENTINO

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 10 April 2024 – The 2024 MXGP World Motocross Championship runs in consecutive weekends for the first time as the teams and crews head directly from the island of Sardegna to round four at the beautiful “Il Ciclamino” circuit at Pietramurata between the cities of Arco and Trento in northern Italy for the MXGP of Trentino on 13th and 14th of April!

With an amazing location at the foot of the Garda Mountains, and the manic enthusiasm of both the Italian and travelling Slovenian fans, there is no doubt that this venue is one of the jewels in MXGP’s crown. There have been 19 GP events held in its history since the first in 1987, a 125cc contest won by Italian hero Massimo Contini on an Italian Cagiva machine. The circuit has hosted more Grands Prix in the last decade than any other, having been on the schedule every year since 2013, and running six events across the two years affected by the COVID pandemic.

Three of the major contenders for MXGP glory this year have had a great amount of success in this arena, whilst only one rider in the current MX2 line-up can claim to having won in Trentino.  With incredible crowds and an electric atmosphere, it is one for any MXGP fan’s bucket list, so we certainly hope you can tune in, or better still join us in person for a memorable weekend of racing action!

The EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF joins the main classes in the journey over from Sardegna, with Hungarian prospect Noel Zanocz looking to defend his Championship lead for Fantic Factory Racing EMX125, while the first race winner Gyan Doensen will hope to make up for a crash-affected fourth for Racestore KTM Factory Rookies in race two.

They are joined by the EMX250 series for their second round, as rising Roman star Valerio Lata looks to defend his narrow Championship lead, where he won last year, on home ground for Beddini GASGAS Factory Juniors against the BUD Racing Kawasaki of Mathis Valin and the chasing pack!

Another perfect weekend for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s reigning MXGP World Champion Jorge Prado in Sardegna saw him extend his series lead to 17 points, and the only consolation for his main opposition is that they were able to finish directly behind him throughout that weekend. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser lost a minimal amount of points to keep the red plate holder within his sights, and Jeffrey Herlings moved up into third in the standings for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, albeit 49 points behind Prado.

All three men have great records at Trentino. Gajser and Herlings have each won 10 individual races, and 5 overall Grands Prix there, and victory for either will see them set the record for GP wins at the circuit, as they are both level with Italian legend Antonio Cairoli as it stands.  “The Bullet” won MX2 in 2013, ’14, and ’16, plus the MXGP class in both 2018 and the first of the three GPs in 2021. Gajser won in his sole MX2 title year of 2015, then took MXGP victory in 2019, two in 2020, and the last GP he contested here in 2022.  The Honda man usually has a massive swell of support from his home country, as the circuit is around 300km from the Slovenian border. After being knocked out of the early 2023 season with injuries from a big crash at this track, his fans will also return to try and urge him on to more success.

However, if Prado continues his current run of success at each GP so far this year, he will join them all on 5 wins as well, after winning his fourth GP at the venue last season, his first in MXGP after consecutive MX2 victories in 2017, ’18, and ‘19. The Spaniard has won 5 individual races at the track, although he suffered his worst RAM Qualifying Race of the year in 2023, finishing in 10th after a rare poor start and even rarer crash.  He rectified that with 1-3 finishes for the GP win, although Herlings took race two with a stunning charge to claim 3rd overall after a 9th in race one, behind Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Maxime Renaux who went 2-2 for 2nd overall.

The RAM Qualifying Race winner was Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, but his dream Saturday was followed by a nightmare Sunday with a first corner crash in race one and a steady second race to go 12-4 for 7th overall.  The Frenchman has won races here in 2016, 2020, and 2021, but never any better than 2ndoverall, which he claimed in 2016 and the final race in 2020. He has also been third three times at Trentino.

One rider with an excellent record at the circuit, albeit in the Youth and EMX classes, is Mattia Guadagnini.  Very much a local rider just over an hour’s drive from his home town, it’s unclear whether or not Mattia will make his debut for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, but he is on the Entry List and home fans will be hoping he can join MRT Racing Team Beta factory man Ivo Monticelli, as the man from Ancona is the only Italian to have scored points in the class so far this season.  Ivo currently lies 15th in the series.

Pauls Jonass is only 10 points behind Febvre in 5th, and the Standing Construct Honda man will look to build on that at a venue where he last saw the podium in his title year of 2017 in MX2, when he shared the race wins with Prado.  Jeremy Seewer has won a GP in Trentino, the MXGP of Garda Trentino, the third round here in 2021, and his learning with Kawasaki Racing Team will continue as he lies 6th in the points chase.  The only other former GP winner here who lines up in MXGP is Ben Watson, who won the final round in 2020 and looks to lift his MRT Racing Team Beta up from 12th in the standings.

All eyes will be on that lead battle, however, as the big question right now is “Who can stop Jorge Prado?”, and the two five-time World Champions in the class will be raising their hands!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 174 Points; 2. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 157 Points; 3. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 125 Pts; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 123 Points ; 5. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HON), 113 Pts; 6. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, KAW), 99 Pts; 7. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 90 Pts; 8. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 83 Pts; 9. The MX2 class has provided some brilliant racing already this year, but so far the top step has continually been occupied by Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing team leader Kay de Wolf. The Dutch teenager has managed to win each GP this season, but there have also been race wins for three other riders. Simon Laengenfelder, who lies 2nd in the points chase for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing,  won the opening race back in Argentina, reigning MX2 World Champion Andrea Adamo won race two in Spain for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and De Wolf’s even younger teammate Lucas Coenen won the first RAM Qualifying Race of the year, as well as the first GP race in Sardegna. Even though the Dutchman holds a 29-point lead going to Trentino, he knows that his pursuers will look at the hard-pack circuits to come and like their chances on them.

The red-plate holder recorded a consistent 5-4 scorecard in Pietramurata last season, but he has form at the track as he took a fine 2nd overall in 2022. His main challenger this year, Laengenfelder, won both the RAM Qualifying Race and the second GP race, although a lowly 9th in race one kept him off the overall podium.  Lucas Coenen didn’t have the best of days here last year, but he went 1-1 in the EMX125 class at one of the rounds in 2021, and will have been fired up by his speed in Sardegna.

It will be home hero Adamo that will be looking to repeat his victory of last season, which was the first of his career, and he now returns as World Champion and the main source of hope for a home victory in the eyes of his home fans.  There is no doubt that the speed is there and with a 70-point gap to the leader after just three GPs, there is also no doubt that he absolutely needs to climb that top step once again.  He can take confidence that he is the only rider lining up in MX2 who has won an overall GP in Trentino.

Liam Everts completed a 1-2 for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing here in 2023, and he sits equal on points with his other teammate Sacha Coenen after sitting out the first round with a thumb injury. Sixth in the points chase is Mikkel Haarup, who enjoyed one of his 6 career podium finishes at the circuit back in 2022.  His Monster Energy Triumph Racing teammate Camden McLellan sits directly behind him in the table, a single point back, after his first career GP podium in Sardegna.

Beyond their Champion Adamo, local supporters will be looking to get behind Monster Energy Yamaha MX2 rider Andrea Bonacorsi, who won a race at Trentino in the EMX250 division last year, and has had a steady start to his rookie year in MX2. Ferruccio Zanchi will again be sidelined for Team HRC after missing Sardegna due to a mid-week practice crash.

As with the MXGP class, the pack will be hoping to make a dent in the leader’s record of winning every GP so far, and this should result in a fantastic weekend of all-out action!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 170 Points; 2. Simon Laengenfelder (GER, GAS), 141 Points; 3. Lucas Coenen (BEL, HUS), 124 Pts; 4. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 106 Points; 5. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 100 Pts; 6. Mikkel Haarup (DEN, TRI), 96 Pts; 7. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI), 95 Pts; 8. BRIAN BOGERS – FROM RETIREMENT TO TOP TEN

Three weeks ago, Brian Bogers was ready to retire from racing Grand Prix motocross. Having originally organized a team for 2024 and then finding out the team was closing shop due to a major sponsor pulling out of the team, Bogers was left with no team for this year and desperate to find one.

Bogers started working for a friend’s building business and just as he had done in his racing career, the sand specialist was ready to work hard and get on with his life, rather than sulk over his terrible situation.

“A few weeks ago,” Bogers said. “I was working for a friend in construction. I didn’t have a lot of schooling, but I know how to work hard. It was a friend and he helped me, because I also needed to train, and he allowed that. I have never had trouble with hard work, so it wasn’t too bad. I always worked hard, my whole life. I also don’t care about working hard, physical training or working for a boss.”

The veteran Dutchman did find a local Dutch team to support him racing part time in the Netherlands, but poor results for that team cost Bogers a lot of stress and he thought seriously about retirement. A change of luck though as fellow Dutchman, Louis Vosters from the Fantic factory team went looking for a rider for this season, after having trouble with his original rider.

“I was riding for a Dutch team, and they helped me really good, but I had to do everything myself. I went training with my own van, cleaning the bike with my dad. It was a really tough time, and I was also working during the week, because I also have bills to pay. So, for sure, this wasn’t easy. At one moment, I did a race, and it went so bad, that I thought, it is maybe better to stop with it. I was actually at this point (about retiring) and then I got a call from Louis (Vosters). I am more motivated than ever and maybe the results won’t come in the first few races as I have to build my fitness. You will see how motivated I am after that, because I really want this to work well.”

In a huge surprise to Bogers, he lined up last weekend at the Grand Prix of Sardegna and with scores of 8-11 and ninth overall, the man from The Netherlands, made good of the confidence Vosters had in him, and while the Riola circuit was the perfect return for a sand specialist, it wasn’t that easy with the little preparation Bogers had for his first GP back in 2024.

“I am quite surprised with my performance. Yes, I am a sand rider, but you also need to be fit for these kind of tracks – and just coming in I am normally not fit enough. I was still in the top 10 in five out of six sessions, I also can’t complain about a top 10 overall in my first GP back. I am very lucky guy to get this opportunity and I am very happy with the performance I have shown already this weekend. The bike feels already amazing, that is a really big advantage. We can only go upwards from here and it will be interesting to see what we can do when I am 100% fit.”

Bogers will now head to Trentino, also in Italy, for a Grand Prix that should make his life a little easier. The hard pack and with a GP already under his belt, Bogers has a real shot at finishing top five, a result he has often been able to achieve in the past.

MXGP PAYS TRIBUTE TO NUNO LARANJEIRA

It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to Nuno Laranjeira, a truly remarkable photographer whose lens captured the essence of motocross for many years. Nuno's talent made him a standout in his field. His presence on the FIM Motocross World Championship saw him being awarded with photographer of the year in 2009.

Nuno's passing at the age of 52 leaves a void in the world of photography and in the hearts of those who knew him. Those fortunate enough to have worked alongside Nuno remember him not only for his skill behind the camera but also for his humor, kindness, and passion.

As we mourn the loss of Nuno Laranjeira, we also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts and those of the whole MXGP family are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

DAVID LUONGO EDITORIAL | MXGP MAG #126

Dear MXGP Fans,

Already three fantastic Grand Prix are in the books. The opening round of the season in Argentina – Villa La Angostura kept its reputation of being one of the best atmosphere Grand Prix of the year. The Latin American fans were present massively to the comeback of the best motocross riders on the beautiful Patagonia situated track. It was also very nice to meet again the whole paddock after the winter break. The defending MXGP Champion Jorge Prado started his season on the best way possible with a Grand Prix Victory. The podium was completed by Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser. In MX2, Kay De Wolf made also a very impressive beginning of season, followed by Simon Laengenfelder and Mikkel Haarup, who wrote History by putting the new Triumph 250cc bike on a podium at their first Grand Prix.

Then the paddock landed in Spain for the first Grand Prix in Europe. Prado was expecting a big attendance to support him for its first appearance after being crowned World Champion and the fans didn’t disappoint him. He scored a perfect weekend with 1-1-1 on Saturday’s RAM Qualifying Race and both Sunday Races. The podium was completed by Gajser and Febvre and Jeffrey Herlings finished 4th. The top 5 are in less than 50 points after the two first Grand Prix and the season promises to be very exciting. In MX2, De Wolf confirmed the good start in Argentina with a second victory, Laengenferlder finished second and Adamo scored important points in the journey of defending his MX2 World Title.

With the MXGP of Sardegna and the first Grand Prix in Italy, we continued to see Jorge Prado's and Kay de Wolf's domination with their third overall win in a row. In MXGP, we could see that Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings are getting closer to the defending Champion as they climbed on the podium, which announces an exciting season ahead of us. In MX2, Lucas Coenen managed his first podium of the season and showed all the qualities we know fron thee young Belgium. Rounding the podium in third was Camden McLellan who got his first of his career and the second of the season in three GPs for Monster Energy Triumph Racing.

During the Argentinian Grand Prix and its traditional Press Conference, I announced the creation of a bright new Electric Motocross World Championship Category, the MXEP, that will start during the 2026 season. Based on the evolutions of this technology during the past years and in collaboration with the FIM and the bike Manufacturers, we felt it was the time to start shaping a series that would takes place during the Grand Prix Weekend. It will allow us to use the fantastic MXGP platform, its audience and popularity to make this new category to grow and to touch new fans. It won’t be a question to mix electric bikes and classic ICE bikes during the same race, but to consider this new technology as a new way of promoting our sport. Now we will work hard during the next two years with the FIM and the Manufacturers Association to create the technical rules of this new category. Our idea will be to start with 6 races, mainly in Europe and then develop it.

In Spain, we announced the prolongation for three more years of the MXGP of The Netherlands in Arnhem. After a very good first edition last year we are delighted to continue our collaboration with Dik Van Wikselaar and Maarten Roos until 2027. It is very important for the Dutch fans and riders to have a home Grand Prix and the MXGP has found a very professional and organized structure with them.

The second season of the Behind the Gate was back this week, and Episode 0 – Time for Redemption is available on YouTube MXGP channel and Episode 1 – Re-Ignited is already available on www.MXGP-TV.com with the Episode 2 coming out this week. I invite all of you to watch it and enjoy the MXGP behind the scenes production. We’ve created this new program to go further than racing and to tell the story beyond the racers and all what make MXGP so spectacular and exceptional. If you want live action, you can still subscribe to MXGP-TV.com and follow all the races of Saturday and Sunday live!
