RAM QUALIFYING RACE WINS FOR GAJSER AND EVERTS THROUGH TOUGH CONDITIONS IN PORTUGAL

AGUEDA (Portugal) 04 May 2024 – In the end the rain had to come to us for the first time in 2024, but despite the muddy conditions the racing was still red hot at the MXGP of Portugal, and the fans added their voice to the atmosphere for the RAM Qualifying Races here at Agueda! Through the squally showers that made the track soft, wet, and heavily rutted, Tim Gajser worked his way to a clear victory in MXGP for Team HRC, taking his second Saturday win of the season and closing the gap at the top of the points table!  That was after the MX2 race was won by a clinical performance from Liam Everts of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, which helps him move up the standings to 6th in the class.

World Championship leader Jorge Prado had kept his many fans from this part of the world happy with the fastest time in Free Practice for Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing, but an old enemy resurfaced as Jeffrey Herlings rose to the fore in worsening conditions to claim the first gate pick for the RAM Qualifying Race on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine. Prado was just behind him, three quarters of a second back, whilst Isak Gifting was a great third for JK Yamaha Racing.

The heavy rain caused many riders to decline the chance of a sighting lap, although the top four in the Championship – Prado, Gajser, Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre, and Herlings, all made the decision to go out and check the circuit.  Perhaps it was no surprise, then, that those four riders bolted quickly into the lead from the drop of the gate, Gajser just edging the holeshot before running too wide in the second corner and allowing Prado and Herlings through.

The three multi-champions knew that track position was paramount, and an aggressive move from Herlings on Prado in the fifth corner looked to have given him the lead. That was for a split-second, as Gajser pulled a stunning outside-to-inside move at the same time and passed both of his rivals in one fell swoop!

The Slovenian, Prado’s closest title challenger, took advantage of his clear vision and began to pull away, but vision seemed to be an issue for the red plate holder, as he lost positions steadily over the first few laps and looked to be telling his team that he would come in for a goggle change.  That change never happened, however, and the reigning Champion had his second difficult RAM Qualifying Race in succession. Unlike in Trentino, he did score points, but only 4 this time for a 7th place finish.

Many riders struggled in the mud, but the leading trio of Gajser, Herlings, and Febvre kept it upright throughout to finish in that order, although Herlings put on a charge to draw to within two and a half seconds of the Honda as Gajser encountered the lapped riders first.

Calvin Vlaanderen moved forward steadily for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP up to a season-best 4th position, with Pauls Jonass for Standing Construct Honda and Fantic Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff finishing 5th and 6th despite both men tipping over in separate incidents.

The six-point gain for Gajser nearly halved his deficit to Prado in the standings, hacking the Spaniard’s lead down to just seven points as we head into what could be a wild day of racing on Sunday!

Tim Gajser: “I had a good start but I went too wide so Jorge (Prado) passed me from inside and then also Jeffrey (Herlings) was also really aggressive for the first couple of corners but I knew I had to pass immediately. I was just going out and cutting and then I surprised both of them and took the lead. I was leading quite comfortable but when we started to get to the lappers it was mainly one line so it was not easy to pass but overall I’m very happy and I hope we can do the same tomorrow”

The Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing flyer Lucas Coenen topped the timesheets in both Free Practice and the slightly drier Time Practice session in MX2.  The Belgian was a stunning 1.7 seconds in front of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Rick Elzinga, with Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing starSimon Laengenfelder in third.

The track had taken a lot of rain, however, before the MX2 RAM Qualifying Race fired into life, and Lucas Coenen once more led the way from Elzinga, with JM Honda Racing’s Hakon Osterhagen making an audacious move on Sacha Coenen to put the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider back into 4th.

Heading towards the finish line area for the first time caused all sorts of issues for the pack, as Sacha Coenen tangled with his teammate Andrea Adamo and came off worse, hitting the ground. His brother Lucas then crashed out of the lead on an uphill slope, causing his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Kay de Wolf to run off the circuit briefly!  On rejoining the track, the red plate holder collided with Elzinga’s teammate Thibault Benistant, and two of the top three men in the Championship were on the floor!

Elzinga now led from Osterhagen, but the teenage Norwegian’s dream start nearly fell apart on lap two as he swerved off the track on a jump face, allowing Liam Everts to inherit second place. Osterhagen recovered to stay in third until the finish.

On the third lap, Everts made a smooth move past Elzinga to take the lead, and with all the trials experience and the natural balance associated with his surname, the #72 kept up the momentum from his overall win at Trentino and built a margin of 28 seconds over Elzinga by the finish. It was Liam’s first ever RAM Qualifying Race win, and in fact all of the top three collected their career-best Saturday finishes in MX2 Grand Prix racing.

Behind them, Simon Laengenfelder took advantage of a further crash for Lucas Coenen to claim 4th ahead of the Belgian, with Dutch privateer Jens Walvoort of the KTM SB Racing team taking a lifetime best of 6th!  Benistant recovered to 8th behind the F&H Racing Team Kawasaki of Quentin Prugnieres, with TM Moto Steels Dr Jack's Yago Martinez a remarkable 9th on his ahead of series leader De Wolf, who suffered another crash but still claimed a single point.

This leaves the Dutchman with a reduced 20-point lead over Laengenfelder in the standings, while Lucas Coenen has just moved up to third by two points from Benistant.  As with the MXGP class though, it would take bravery to bet on the outcome of tomorrow’s Grand Prix races as the weather could play havoc with the Championship contenders again!

Liam Everts: “I got a good jump out of the gate. It was muddy you know so got to wrestle all over the track and I knew I had to be aggressive for the first laps and that’s what I did. I almost went down a few times but I managed to keep up. Once I found my rhythm I felt very good and did some trial riding!”

DAVID LUONGO – MXGP MAG EDITORIAL #127

Dear MXGP Fans,

Ahead of the Grand Prix of Portugal, I have very important news to share with you. After more than 20 years of waiting, the MXGP of Australia will be back on the calendar for the 2025 season. This is clearly a great achievement for Infront Moto Racing and all the motocross community. Australia is one of the biggest and most enthusiastic countries for offroad and motocross in the world. Thanks to the fantastic collaboration with Motorcycle Australia and the Northern Territory government, I have no doubt that the Grand Prix will settle itself in the country for a long term. It is a new step for the MXGP on its path to the global coverage it deserves as the most popular Offroad series in the world. In the upcoming months, we will share more information about the Grand Prix, but I have no doubt that the Australian offroad community will embrace this great news!

Secondly, the final Grand Prix of the 2024 season will take place in Spain. The MXGP of Castilla La Mancha in Cozar will end a fantastic season of 20 Grand Prix before heading to the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Matterley Basin, UK.

Concerning the past Grand Prix, we delivered two very successful Grand Prix in Italy with Riola Sardo and Pietramurata. During those races the MXGP and MX2 classes confirmed that the championship will be a long journey full of actions. Jorge Prado is showing a fantastic confidence and impressive speed since the beginning of the season, but Tim Gajser and Romain Febvre maintain a short gap with him, while Jeffrey Herlings is still building his rhythm from his past injuries. These four riders are showing impressive skills, but the season is still very long, and many things can happen.

In MX2, Kay De Wolf is leading the championship but here also the battle for the title will remain for long with many potential GP winners as Liam Everts, Andrea Adamo, Simon Laengenfelder and more to come.

The start of the different European Championship has been a great success as well, with two groups in EMX125 and EMX250 at the MXGP of Trentino. As commonly stated, the EMX are vital for the future of our sport as they are the class that will grow the champions of tomorrow, the excellent situation of these categories is a very good sign for the upcoming years.

Now we are entering into the first triple header Grand Prix of the season with Agueda (Portugal), MXGP of Galicia (Spain) and Saint Jean d’Angely (France), three hard ground tracks with very different soil and particularities. After these three Grand Prix, we will pass the third of the championship, it is the first important moment of the season.

I wish you a great Portuguese Grand Prix and for the ones who cannot make it to Agueda, you can follow us on MXGP-TV.com.

See you in Portugal.

WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE FOR THE MXGP OF PORTUGAL – BACK TO THE FAMOUS RED DIRT

Agueda (Portugal) 4 May 2024 – The MXGP World Championship returns to one of its most classic venues of the calendar this weekend, and the cameras are ready to capture the action as round five of the 2024 series, the MXGP of Portugal, starts a run of three weekends that are sure to be full of drama!

The chasing MXGP pack are now all hoping to deny the defending World Champion Jorge Prado of a fifth straight Grand Prix win. The Spaniard has taken every winner’s trophy back to his Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing transporter, and despite being overtaken in race one last time out by the two riders directly behind him in the Championship, he will remain the favourite to continue his run of victories.

Team HRC leader Tim Gajser and Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre will be champing at the bit to end Prado’s domination, and Jeffrey Herlings will be targeting a repeat of last year’s win here for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing to put himself back in the title hunt!

The MX2 World Championship saw Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star Liam Everts take his first win of the season last time out, but Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf still leads the championship and has lost little momentum! Simon Laengenfelder of Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing won race two in Trentino and with a trio of hard-pack circuits ahead of them, the German will be going all-out to hack down that 26-point advantage!

With the first four rounds in the record books, the MXGP World Championship really gets into the meaty part of the season now, and these three weekends will be vital to the eventual destination of both Championships!

This weekend, SPORT TV Portugal will broadcast all four Grand Prix races LIVE and will be onsite with the crew to cover the event, and our regular television partners worldwide will continue their outstanding coverage of the incredible action from this series.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Trentino, as well as the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more.  All of this footage will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

As always, MXGP fans can follow the races LIVE throughout the weekend. All you need to do is log onto www.MXGP-TV.com Saturday and Sunday, from wherever you are in the world.  Come and join us for what promises to be an incredible 2024!

RIDERS KICK OFF THE MXGP OF PORTUGAL WITH CULTURE AND CAMARADERIE IN AGUEDA

AGUEDA (Portugal) 3 may 2023 – Today marked the kickoff of the MXGP of Portugal with a Media Event hosted by local organizers at the Museu Etnográfico da Região do Vouga in Águeda.

Head of Sustainability, Tourism, and Climate Action Division Célia Laranjeira along with Tourism Area Manager Joana Coutinho led a group of riders including Team HRC's Tim Gajser, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant and Rick Elzinga, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Liam Everts and Sacha Coenen, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Lucas Coenen, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder, both Monster Energy Triumph Factory Racing riders, Camden McLellan and Mikkel Haarup, TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar, Bike It Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jack Chambers and Bobby Bruce, F&H Racing Team’s Quentin Prugnieres, BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Mathis Valin and Team Leoparden Racing’s Leopold Ambjornson along with local Portuguese riders such as Luís Outeiro and Afonso Gomes.

The event started with a photo of the riders in front of the typical Portuguese house. The guided tour then began and was a great moment for the group of riders to connect with the past through the historical museum, typical of the history of the region. While they were able to learn some facts about the region’s history, they were also able to display try on their musical talents, and enjoy the musical room of ancient instruments in a great and relaxed atmosphere.

Following the tour, the riders and their teams indulged (but not too much) in tasting Portuguese delicacies, including some specific to the city of Águeda, to finish this fun and joyful tour of the Museu Etnográfico da Região do Vouga em Águeda.

Now, having bonded over culture and camaraderie, the riders are set to shift their focus entirely to the MXGP of Portugal and on a full racing day in Agueda that promises to display some intense and spectacular races

ROMAIN FEBVRE – CONFIDENCE AND MOMENTUM

Kawasaki factory rider Romain Febvre is building momentum as he heads to Portugal this weekend for the Grand Prix at the beautiful Agueda circuit. The Frenchman understands that he has to start winning Grand Prix’s and getting close in the championship points list to series leader Jorge Prado, but he felt that in Trentino, at the last round of the series, he was very much the man of the moment for most of the weekend.

Winning the Saturday qualification race and the opening race of the Sunday show. It all went wrong though, when he slipped over while trying to pass Prado in the final race of the weekend. That crash in race two was frustrating, but the positive from Trentino was the fact Febvre knows he can now beat Prado.

“I was disappointed about the crash,” Febvre said. “Of course. I just tried to pass him and somehow, I made a mistake, on my own, so, this is my own fault. To get a win again, like on Saturday, in the qualifying race, then the first race on Sunday, to pass Prado, which was good for me. You know, it was the first time Prado started first and got passed and then he dropped back, so, I think we found a way to beat him. It is good for the rest of the championship, because its just the beginning (of the championship). It is good to find some negative points on him, where we can beat him, so I am very excited for the rest of the rounds.”

Because of those two races wins in Italy a couple of weeks ago, the Kawasaki rider has picked up a lot of confidence, and you just know with that confidence comes more aggression and more motivation to show the Spaniard that he is capable of doing it again.

“I mean, the good thing is now I was able to win a race in Trentino and if I didn’t crash, I could have won the Grand Prix. It is just good to get back to winning, a moto or a Grand Prix and that brings confidence in what I am doing and then we can also see that we are getting closer or better than Prado. It is good for the confidence. To win a GP, is becoming more and more special, because there are four of us and sometimes even more who can win.”

So, the goal this weekend is to win, and propel himself up the MXGP championship points table, slowly building even more confidence and momentum and eventually, try and do what he did in 2023, by winning multiple GPs in a row. Portugal is a good place to start for Febvre.

“Yes, I have done well there (in Portugal), I always like that track. Last year I think I was on the podium and won the first race. Sure, I am excited to go there and then also Spain. Spain would be a big race for Prado, because it is his home race or something like this. My goal is to beat him there, because last time we went to Spain, he was really good there. He was faster than us, but to beat him at Lugo would be a good thing for me and that is my goal.”

Whatever happens in Agueda this weekend, the momentum built in Trentino can only give him more belief that those GP wins will follow soon and if that happens, we all know, he could make a real charge towards series leader Prado and second placed man Tim Gajser.
