10TH RAM QUALIFYING RACE WIN FOR PRADO WHILE HORGMO RISES TO THE TOP FOR THE FIRST TIME

UDDEVALLA (Sweden) 12 August 2023 – The first racing day of the MXGP of Sweden finished today in Uddevalla. The old-school Swedish circuit surrounded by the distinct rocky hills and forest was the perfect place to display a great show for the RAM Qualifying Races.

In MXGP, it was Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who clinched his 10th RAM Qualifying win while F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo won his first of the season in great fashion.

Along with the MXGP and MX2 classes, the first races of EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racingwent on and respectively saw Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk and MJC Yamaha Official EMX125’s Janis Reisulis come out victorious.

The Paddock Show followed the RAM Qualifying Races with the winners of the RAM Qualification Races and the MX2 Red Plate Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo. Two special guests gifted the Swedish fans from their presence to mark their comeback to the competition in Uddevalla which were Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux and Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass along with the home heroes JWR Honda Racing’s Alvin Östlund and VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting.

The MXGP RAM Qualifying Race began as it has often been the case this season with Jorge Prado taking the fastest start. Prado took the lead after the first corner in front of Team HRC's Tim Gajser and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer. The race went perfectly for Prado who rode smoothly without making any mistakes and creating a 10 seconds gap with Gajser. Prado managed the rest of the race superbly to sign his 10th RAM Qualifying Race victory of the season.

Gajser rose his level again from the last Grand Prix and took a great start to get behind Prado and ride the full race in 2nd place. Behind him Seewer also showed up today with a good start that put him at the front of the pack and got to 3rd after the first corner, also keeping that position until the end.

However, the 4th place was really fought for until the end between Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre. Knowing that he cannot find himself behind Prado if he wants to reduce the gap in the Championship, Febvre did everything to pass Herlings but the ‘bullet’ knows how to defend a position. Febvre eventually took until lap 5 of 13 to make a successful pass after many tries and moved up to 4th. Febvre was on the charge forward when he tipped over mid-turn on lap 6 to see all his hard work wasted. Herlings took the 4th place back while Febvre tried in vain to find a way past the Dutch rider until the end. Herlings finished 4th while Febvre settled for 5th.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen rode consistently during the whole race to see himself in 6th position from start to finish. Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández showed great rhythm and flow on the bike after his fall in Finland. Finding himself in 8th over the turn of lap 1 Fernandez was behind the returning Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod. Fernandez rode his race flawlessly and managed to pass Guillod on lap 5 to finish 7th in the end. The Swiss made a great comeback to the competition as he finished 8th in the end less than a month after breaking his shoulder blade and showed all his talent and willpower to perform.

SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato is another rider that will be able to take a lot of positive after this race as he went from 12th on lap 1 to 9th in the end to score 2 points. Along the way, the young Italian overtook Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Pauls Jonass, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux and on the very last lap for 9th, another good performer of the day De Baets Yamaha MX-Team’s Benoit Paturel. Paturel raced consistently in 9th until that point and finished 10th to get another top 10 finish in RAM Qualifying races.

For his comeback, Renaux showed great promises for the Sunday races as he finished 12th. His teammate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff overtook him on lap 12 to finish 11th losing vital points for the Championship. Jonass finished 13th in the end.

Jorge Prado: “I’ve been feeling good all day long and I had a good feeling right away. I had a good start which was very important to me because I was good in time practice. The speed was okay and I pulled the Holeshot and rode well. I made a gap and took it home. I am super happy about my riding, no mistakes, smooth like in training. I’m loving it here and hopefully we can repeat it tomorrow.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen and Kevin Horgmo took a great start and came wheel to wheel over the first corners although the advantage finally went to S.Coenen who took the lead. S.Coenen rode superbly from the start and looked comfortable although he started to make few mistakes as Horgmo started to push behind him and got closer. On lap 9 of 12, S.Coenen made a slight mistake that allowed Horgmo to get a better drive on a landing to take the lead. S.Coenen got overtaken by an excellent Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts on the same lap and moved down to 3rd. S.Coenen unfortunately crashed on lap 11 to pick himself up in 11th place and finish there. On the other hand, Horgmo showed a lot of a quality and seemed at one with the bike over the last 4 laps. Even when Everts got very close to him over the last 3 laps, the Norwegian showed nerves of steel to keep the charging Belgian at bay. Horgmo finally took it home and won his first RAM Qualifying Race of the season, incredibly confirming his recent form.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo had a great start to go 3rd from the start. He could not contain his teammate Everts on lap 7 and moved down to 4th. The Red Plate then benefitted from his other teammate S.Coenen’s crash to move back up to 3rd in the end. Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder who is normally used to great starts had to deal with an average one compared to his standards, going 6th on lap 1. However, the German rider, pushed hard to overtake Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga. Elzinga was not going to make it easy and defended his 5th place very well. On lap 7, Laengenfelder finally forced his way and moved up to 5th to finish 4th due to S.Coenen’s misfortune. Elzinga ended at the 5th place.

Behind them, things settled from the start for the two Spanish riders F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s David Braceras and WZ Racing Team’s Oriol Oliver who followed each other in 7th and 8th place respectively. They gained one position each at the end to finish 6th and 7th. The home hero VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting took the opportunity to race at home to display a great performance. The Swedish rider rode consistently into the top 10 throughout the whole race and made a late charge on the last lap on Team Ship To Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Emil Weckman which triggered the roars from Swedish fans. Gifting finished 8th in the end while Weckman settled for 9th after another strong showing for the Finnish.

JM Honda Racing’s Camden Mc Lellan in the end closed the top 10 and scored 1 point as he capitalised on S.Coenen’s fall. S.Coenen’s brother, Lucas from Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing unfortunately had a strong crash in time practice that saw him tipping over his bike. The young Belgian had to sit the RAM Qualifying Race out.

Kevin Horgmo: “Liam (Everts) was really pushing but I felt good and held my lines. Like I said, it is step by step that we’re building but it is really good for me and the team. We don’t stop working so thanks to them and to all the fans here, it was really great”

TV COVERAGE: HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF SWEDEN

Uddevalla (SWEDEN) 11 August 2023 – The fifteenth round of the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship is arriving in Uddevalla this weekend for the MXGP of Sweden.

When you enter the enclosure of the Uddevalla track, you can't help but have a thought for the local legend Sten Lundin. Between 1955 and 1966, the 2-time World Champion fought valiantly to shine in front of Uddevalla fans, which he managed to do once in August 1958 winning the Grand Prix in the GP 500 class. Sixty-five years later, the rich heritage left by this immense rider should not leave Swedish youth indifferent, composed in particular of Isak Gifting but also Alvin Östlund who will certainly have in mind to imitate their illustrious predecessor, especially for the 25th event on this Swedish soil.

As always, there will again be a large worldwide LIVE coverage which includes CBS Sports Network, Rai Sports, Teledeporte, Moji, FOX Sports, Automoto TV la chaine, Eurosport 2, Stan Sports and more.

Below you can find a list of TV channels that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Sweden, as well as the 26min Behind-the-Gate magazine featuring the best moments from the races, exclusive interviews and more will be available on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the Grand Prix.

DAVID LUONGO – EDITORIAL – JULY 2023

Dear MXGP Friends,

As we are going through the summer, there is no rest for MXGP! We had a weekend off after the MXGP of Finland, and we are on the road again to join the beautiful Uddevalla track in Sweden.

Last month has been full of action and we saw the comeback of the champions; the defending World Champion Tim Gajser joined the Grand Prix again in Loket, and Jeffrey Herlings rejoined the competition in Vantaa, Finland.

But the big performance of the month is for Romain Febvre, who managed to achieve five Grand Prix victories in a row. His fighting spirit is not to prove and there is no doubt that he will put everything into the chase of the world title with Jorge Prado. The Spanish rider is the leader of the MXGP Championship, 98 points ahead of Romain Febvre. He is showing race after race that he can handle the pressure and he is showing an impressive consistency during each racing weekend. The comeback of all the top and talented riders is a sign that the end of the season will be fantastic!

During the MXGP of Czech Republic in Loket, we were honored by the visit of the President of the country, Mr. Petr Pavel, who is a true fan of motorcycle and Motocross. It is rewarding to bring the MXGP to this level of popularity, as it is opening once again new frontiers in the representation of our sport at the highest level of the State and government. I would like to thank the MotoClub of Loket for all their help and for the great welcome we all gave to Mr. Petr Pavel.

Then we travelled to Lommel for the MXGP of Flanders, and it was very special for many reasons. Firstly because for all the riders Lommel is always the most demanding Grand Prix on the calendar, probably the most difficult track to ride in the World in GP conditions! This year the track was totally revamped to bring new challenges to the competitors and to improve the visibility of the public. The result was just perfect, with great racing and one of the most attended Grand Prix we had in Lommel for years!

During the Flemish Grand Prix we had again the honor to host the Sport Minister of Flanders, Mr. Ben Weyts. He could witness the the strong lineup of future Belgian stars in the MX2 class like Jago Geerts, Liam Everts, and Lukas and Sacha Coenen, there is no doubt that Belgium will have a great future in MXGP!

The MX2 maybe faced a turning point in Vantaa during the MXGP of Finland. It was almost three decades that the World Championship didn’t come back to this historical track next to the Helsinki airport. I have to congratulate and thank the MotoClub of Vantaa and its President Pasi Jaatinen, as they managed to organize a Grand Prix in less than six weeks after the cancelation of Hyvinkaa. Jago Geerts was closing his gap on Andrea Adamo after his impressive race in Lommel, he was just 13 points away from the lead, but an unfortunate crash in the first heat of Sunday put him aside of the Finnish Grand Prix. Andrea Adamo is now 60 points in front of Geerts and 87 from Liam Everts.

Last week we announced our new partnership with Nacon for the development of the MXGP Official Videogame for the next 5 years! As promoter, it is very important to provide 360 degrees of entertainment based on the MXGP universe to our fans. The presence of a videogame is a need. I have no doubt that the result will be very realistic and that it will give a fantastic experience to the gamers!

In Lommel we also celebrated an impressive milestone for my father, Giuseppe Luongo: 40 Years of promoting Motocross. He started in 1983, when he was 23 years old, with the dream of bringing this sport to more professionalism and to make it more popular in the World. With his energy, passion, determination, here we are, four decades later, bringing the MXGP in four continents and making the TV production for millions of fans around the world. When he started managing the MXGP World Championship in 1996 there were 10 people, and now we are more than 150 people organizing Grand Prix in more than 18 countries per year. During the MXGP of Flanders, we had the time to celebrate this special moment with all the most important champions of our sport history, they were all present. And as we always said from the beginning, our aim is building the perfect scenario for the riders to shine!

Now we are in the last sprint of the season for the title chase with five Grand Prix to go before the race that will probably enter in the history by its attendance, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Ernée – France on the 7/8th of October!

See you in Uddevalla!

LONG LIVE THE GLORY DAYS: 90S MOTOCROSS MEETS 2023

Ah, the '90s! Neon colours. Mullets. Hardcore scrambling, and of course, who could forget the distinctive rasp of a two-stroke?

Fast forward to 2023. The scent of two-stroke might have lessened, but the spirit of the '90s remains very much alive. At the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, Belgium, we found ourselves right back in the heart of the action as Yamaha embarked on a half-century celebration of our championship-winning YZ.

With the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams decked out in special retro-inspired livery that paid homage to the eye-catching 1993 white and pink YZ design, the Belgian Grand Prix didn't merely reignite our motocross memories; it brought the glory days back to life in full technicolor.

Throughout the weekend, we spiralled down memory lane with the heroes of the past like Marnicq Bervoets, Paul Malin, and Werner de Wit. But it wasn’t all about nostalgia – the future was in full force too, with electrifying performances by Jago Geerts – whose dominant Grand Prix win sparked an emotional celebration – and Glenn Coldenhoff, Jeremy Seewer, and Rick Elzinga.

And here’s the best part! You don’t have to take our word for it. We've distilled this nostalgic journey into an epic 6-minute video to relive the moment.

And on that note, “YZ, here's to 50 years of thrilling rides – and to many more!

MXGP COMES BACK TO ACTION IN UDDEVALLA FOR THE MXGP OF SWEDEN

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 9 August 2023 - The 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship comes to the well-known circuit of Uddevalla for the MXGP of Sweden that is marking the fifteenth round of the campaign.

This week will also mark the 25th event in the Swedish circuit’s history which has hosted many amazing races since its first introduction to the Motocross World Championship in 1958 when home rider Lundin Sten won in 500cc. This historic track became an unmissable and regular stop in the calendar since the 2000s. Throughout the years, legends of the sport have raced and won many times on the hard pack of the Glimminge Motorstadion. The record winners in Uddevalla are Stefan Everts and Antonio Cairoli with 6 GP wins each while Joël Smets managed 3 wins.

Coming into this Grand Prix, Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre has shown in 2015 that he can win in Uddevalla like Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff in 2019. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Team HRC's Tim Gajser will arrive with an extra boost of confidence knowing they all won twice. Seewer (MXGP 2022 and MX2 2017), Gajser (2017 MXGP, 2015 MX2) and Herlings (2013, 2014 in MX2).

Along with MXGP and MX2, the EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing will compete this weekend in their 7th and 8th round respectively this season. In EMX250, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi is the Red Plate Holder with 2 Round wins and 6 podiums out of 6 rounds. MJC Yamaha Official EMX125’s Janis Martin Reisulis still tops the Championship in EMX125 presented by FMF Racing and won the last 2 rounds.

The 2022 MXGP of Sweden was held in Uddevalla, marking the 15th round of the season and it was Jeremy Seewer who took his third GP wins of that season in front Tim Gajser and Glenn Coldenhoff.

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado continues his path at the top of the Championship as he got his 13th podium in Finland out of 14 GPs this season. Prado also won his 11th race of the season which is by far the most of any rider this campaign. The rest of the season seems bright for the Spanish rider if he keeps his strong record and performances over the last stretch of the campaign.

Behind in 2nd position, Romain Febvre won an eye watering 5 Grand Prix in a row in Finland which is his personal best winning streak. Febvre mentioned that he feels at one with his bike and the results are totally proving that fact. The only shadow in all these incredible performances is that he is still trailing by 98 points on the leader Prado which is credit to the Spaniard who keeps winning races and RAM Qualifying Races. Febvre is still not down and will fight until the end to get as close as possible.

Jeremy Seewer is still 3rd in the Championship and has been very consistent over the last 6 GPs with two podiums and four 4th places. The Swiss is always fighting for podiums and is a GP winner this season with his victory at the MXGP of France. The end of the season is going to be interesting with a final sprint for the 3rd spot with his Teammate Glenn Coldenhoff who is in great form and shows great speed. Coldenhoff is now 4th, 25 points behind Seewer, thanks to his 4 podiums in the last 6 Grand Prix. Everything is still at play between them and it will be a battle of the teammates for the 3rd place in the Championship. Last year, it was advantage to Seewer as he won in Sweden while Coldenhoff was on the podium in 3rd place.

Team HRC’s Rubén Fernández unfortunately lost many points after having to retire from the MXGP of Finland following a crash in Race 1 while he was 5th. That was blow as he felt good during the weekend, getting the 3rd place in RAM Qualifying Race. The Spanish rider has still a lot to give this season and hopefully Sweden could be a good weekend for him.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen is 6th in the Championship and got closer to Fernandez after Finland, 12 points behind. He is a race winner this season but is yet to climb on the podium which is something he is chasing for. He will have to defend his position now with the return of Jeffrey Herlings.

Herlings is 7th due to his injury that made him miss 4 GPs. The ‘bullet’ got an amazing 5th overall on his return which shows just how much quality he is able to produce when he is on a bike. Herlings comes to Uddevalla with the confidence that he performed very well on his comeback. We know that when the Dutchman is riding, he always has a chance to win.

SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato who is a solid 8th in Championship has finished 12th overall in Finland and has struggled to find his consistent flow recently but we know that the Italian can perform as he has done it many times this season. He will definitely want to bounce back in Sweden.

Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod, 9th in the Championship, got stopped in his ascension before Lommel and had to sit out Flanders and Finland after sustaining an injury in training. The Swiss is set to make his comeback in Sweden which will give him the chance to show that he was on a good dynamic before getting injured.

De Baets Yamaha MX-Team’s Benoit Paturel made his way into the top 10 in 10th position. The French rider who is a privateer showed that with consistency and good performances come reward. He is also getting more regularly around the top 10 and will want to be even more incisive over last stretch of the season.

Tim Gajser finished 6th overall in Finland which demonstrates that he is slowly getting back to the top which is exciting for the Championship. The Slovenian gets better and better and the last GPs will be a good test to gauge where is his level at before next season. Going in Uddevalla where he finished 2nd last year will be a good way for him to perform to his best.

Home hero JWR Honda Racing’s Alvin Östlund will be riding his home Grand Prix in Sweden on the back of his season’s best finish in Finland, 9th overall. He is now 16th in the Championship and can expect to go even higher if he confirms his last showing in Uddevalla.

Last year, the MXGP of Finland was won by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts ahead of Tom Vialle and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Andrea Adamo is at the top of the Championship and showed the reason why he is there in Finland where he got a perfect win with a 1-1 for the first time of his career. The Italian grows in confidence and has now confirmed that he is can win races and GPs at the same time. With Jago Geerts getting unfortunately injured in Finland, the Italian will have one less rival for the title.

Jago Geerts was on his way to fight for the title with Adamo with 3 GP wins in a row but will now miss many GPs due to his crash in Finland in Race 1 which put a blow to his hopes of winning his first MX2 Title.

The next pursuer of Adamo is his teammate Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts who climbed to the 3rd place thanks to his podium in Finland. Everts got pack up on the podium after Sumbawa and rode superbly. Everts is getting closer to another win this season and Uddevalla could be the perfect opportunity to put pressure on Adamo for the title.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf is down to 4th in the Championship after missing out on the MXGP of Finland. His participation in the MXGP of Sweden is still not guaranteed. However, Simon Laengenfelder is 9 points behind de Wolf and has an incredible momentum after getting his 4th podium in a row. Since his comeback the German rider looks unstoppable with great speed on all surfaces. He is treating the rest of the season to get great sensations for next season but could well win few GPs before the end of the season.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant is 6th and had to miss out the MXGP of Finland to focus on his health. His position is also getting threatens by Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen who finds himself only 1 point behind in the Championship. L.Coenen has been excellent over the last 2 GPs getting a podium at his home GP in Lommel and the 4th place in Finland. He has found his consistency and the Belgian has shown this season that he can win races with 4 race wins which is the 2nd most of the campaign behind Geerts.

Now 8th in the Standings, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk has missed out on the last 2 GPs due to injury. F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo is 38 points behind and got his third top 5 in a row. Horgmo is really consistent this season and got better and better as the season went on. However, he is still chasing after his first podium of the season having finished 4th twice in Argentina and the Czech Republic.

TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar got back to his usual standards with a 9th overall in Finland and kept his place into the top 10 although Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga who is 11th, 9 points behind is getting used to his new bike and has grabbed two 6ths overall in the last two Grand Prix to reduce the gap with Pancar.

VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting will be the home hero this weekend in MX2 as the 16th in the Championship will battle on his home ground. The Swedish rider has clinched three top 10s over the last 5 GPs which will give him some confidence to approach this weekend from the best of ways.

A Glenn Coldenhoff – Chasing A Deal

Dutch veteran Glenn Coldenhoff is on a bit of a roll at the moment with very consistent results and podium results. The Monster Energy Yamaha rider seems more than likely to be looking for a new team for 2024 and these results would be helping him get the contract he deserves next year.

Last weekend in Finland, the 32-year-old scored third overall to match his third overall from Lommel the previous week and in the last seven rounds, he has gone 3-3-5-3-4-2-4. The Hoff was more than happy with his performance last weekend.

“Another podium,” Coldenhoff said. “You should always be happy with that. But, at this point, I just want to win. That’s what we are working for. We’re not too far off, so we have planned some testing next week, and we will keep working towards it. There are not too many rounds left now, so I hope to be on top soon. Hopefully, I can make it happen in Sweden already”

As for a contract for 2024, it is quiet on that front and the Yamaha rider hopes his solid performances throughout his career will lead to something he feels will help him remain a serious contender for GP wins and podiums.

“For the moment there is nothing clear there. I am not able to say anything, some teams are interested, but I have heard nothing official from Yamaha, but there is talk of changes and I haven’t spoken to anyone yet. This is the time it starts, but many, many riders and also maybe teams are out of contract, and I think a lot will happen in this time. I am still able to get podiums and I still think I can win, and I have a lot left in me and I want to show that as well.”

Having six Grand Prix victories in his career, five in MXGP and one in MX2, the goal remains the same as when he first started becoming one of the top five men in the world. While he hasn’t won a GP this season yet,  he feels it is coming soon.

“Yes, I am still a bit off that, but that is a goal, also to get my first win of the year, that is another goal and then for sure it starts moving in the championship as well.”

Now onto Sweden and a track he has podiumed at in 2022, won at in 2019 and always shown good form, so maybe,  next weekend, the MXGP of Sweden brings him that much awaited victory, just to build some momentum for another factory ride in 2024.
