RAM Qualifying Races kickstarted the MXGP of Portugal in style with Fernandez and Geerts coming out victorious!

AGUEDA (Portugal) 29 April 2023 – Here we are in Agueda after an incredible day of tough competition during the RAM Qualifying Races. The last words went to Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez in MXGP and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts in MX2.

The newly inverted circuit of Agueda delivered the speed and spectacle we thought and more! Riders acclimated themselves quickly to the new layout to go full gas from the get go.

Alongside the FIM Motocross World Championship races, the EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing competed in their first race of the weekend in which Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi and MJC Yamaha Team’s Janis Martin Reisulis came out victorious in their respective class.

The RAM Qualifying Races were followed by the now inevitable Paddock Show and was full of fans coming to cheer the riders and especially hero Ruben Fernandez who gave them the win that all locals were waiting for. Among the guests were Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Liam Everts, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen along with MXGP Red Plate Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado and MX2 Red Plate Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts. There was also a special guest as Hugo Basaula, home hero, came on stage to welcome the public to Agueda. The fans kept asking for more and even made few ‘Holas’ along the way during the show. The Paddock Show concluded with riders giving signed posters to ecstatic fans who came in large numbers.

For the first time this season, Ruben Fernandez won the RAM Qualifying Race and he did that in great fashion as one of the fans’ favourites here in Portugal rode a sensational race. After finding himself early on behind quick starter Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Fernandez showed a lot of nerves on lap 4 as he made a move on the inside of Herlings to push him wide and take the lead off the ‘bullet’. Fernandez went on to display a strong performance even if he had to stays focus until the end with a late charge from Herlings who settled in the end for 2nd.

Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen took a great opportunity as he managed to finish 3rd of the race. He overtook Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Valentin Guillod on lap 3 to get to 5th.  He then capitalised on the fall of Jorge Prado, 3rd at the time, who lost the front of his bike on lap 5. Vlaanderen then passed Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux on the same lap for 3rd and kept this place until the end.

Renaux had to retire few laps later with a mechanical problem making him lose precious points foir the championship.

Prado who found himself down to 11th after his fall went back up to 6th a couple of laps later to get right behind Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre. Febvre who also fell earlier in the race at the same spot as Prado, had to defend his 5th place in front of the Red Plate until the very last turns, Febvre and Prado who both made a great comeback finished in 5th and 6th respectively.

After a great start, Guillod who was 4th on lap 1, got passed by Vlaanderen on lap 3, and then could not keep his position as he moved down the order throughout the race to 10th in the end. It is still a good point for the Swiss in the Championship to keep him 11th.

The other Swiss rider Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer showed how quick he can be when he races without incident as the 2022 Vice MXGP Champion found himself 7 after lap 1 but overtook his countryman Guillod on lap 6 for 5th and kept going as he took advantage of Renaux’s misfortune to get to 4th and keep that position until the chekered flag.

The other riders who showed very good promises for tomorrow were JM Honda Racing’s Brent van doninck and Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who were 10th and 11th on lap 1 respectively. Both riders showed great confidence as they kept pushing to move up positions. van doninck managed to capitalise on Prado and Renaux mishap to get to 7th on lap 7 and kept his place until the end while Guadagnini 10th on lap 7, showed an amazing determination until the end as he overtook Guillod and Standing Construct Honda MXGP’s Brian Bogers over last couple of laps to finish 8th.

Bogers on his side was able to get from 9th on lap 1 to 5th on lap 7. Unfortunately, with few riders putting pressure behind him such as Prado and Febvre, the dutchman had to concede few places to end up to the 9thposition in then end but still display a strong performance throughout the race.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff did not have the best day as the rider could not find the same speed and rhythm he showed since the beginning of the season and had to settle for the 15th place in the end.

Rubén Fernández: “It was difficult to not to make mistake at the end. I did some mistake as I was trying to overtake Jeffrey Herlings but I managed to keep the lead even if he pushed me right until the end. I’m so happy to get my first RAM Qualifying Race”

In MX2, it was Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder who got the best start in front of Jago Geerts. The Red Plate looked very comfortable on this new layout and show great speed and control as he overtook Laengenfelder on lap 3 to never look back and win comfortably the RAM Qualifying Race. Laengenfelder also stayed without much trouble at the 2nd place until the end.

We witnessed a battle between teammates at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing with Liam Everts and Andrea Adamo for the 3rd place. Everts quickly got to 3rd as Adamo managed to overtake TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar on lap 2 for 4th. A great battle ensued and it was Adamo who got the last word on lap 8 as he closed down Everts on a turn. Everts nearly fell following that move from Adamo but incredibly kept himself on the bike. Adamo went on to finish 3rd while Everts 4th. The two on-form teammates continue to display strong racing.

Another pair of teammates, Roan Van De Moosdijk and Kay de Wolf from Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing also marked some important points as they managed to both gain places throughout the race to finally got together on lap 10 in 5th for Van de Moosdijk and 6th for de Wolf.

Pancar is a rider that we are beginning to see a lot in the top 10 as he started very quickly to find himself 4thafter lap 1. Although he couldn’t keep that position and had to concede few places along the way, the Slovenian managed to stay strong and finish 7th in the end.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant has somehow a little bit underperformed compared to his usual standards that he showed us since the beginning of the season. Benistant got to 8thafter Lap 1 and went up and down during the race to settle for 8th in the end, being overtaken by his rival in the championship de Wolf on lap 6 as he was 7th to move down to 8th where stayed in the end.

The good operation of the day was for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen who after crashing over the first lap of the race made a very worthy comeback as he managed to get back to 9th quickly on lap 4 and never left this position until the end.

Behind him was Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Jack Chambers who showed that he is getting acclimated to the level of the MX2 Championship since his debut in Switzerland. Chambers got to 7th on lap 1 and showed that he doesn’t give up easily after moving down to 11th on lap 3. He got into a give and take situation with VHR Racing Team’s Isak Gifting for 10th and the American finally made the move sticks on lap 6th to stay 10th and collect 1 good point for the Championship Standings. Gifting unfortunately crashed on lap 9 and finished 25th.

The other misfortune was for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Rick Elzinga who got an issue with his bike and tried to continue after a passage to the pitlane but he then had to retire on lap 8 in what had to be a frustrating for the young Dutch.

This was the debut of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen after his injury in pre-season. While he went down on lap 2 and found himself down to 23rd position, S.Coenen managed to gain few place and finish the race 20th getting a full race under his belt which will be valuable for next races.

Jago Geerts: “I felt very good all day. I managed to pass Simon and then pushed to stay first. So overall a very good race for me and I am looking forward for tomorrow”

MXGP Academy Activities in Agueda, Portugal

The MXGP Academy is taking place for the first time in 2023 at the MXGP of Portugal in Agueda this weekend, where aspiring young motocross racers have come together to sharpen their talents and learn about what it requires to compete professionally in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The youngsters learned from the experienced John van de Berk, Jan Postema and Martin van Genderen, as well as local trainers throughout Friday and Saturday.

The MXGP Academy began on Friday with a riders and parents briefing, followed by a rider’s education session where they learned more about safety rules, such as flag signals and what is the appropriate reaction and received other advice from the coaches.

After the class with the riders, it was time for the workshop with the parents, where they learnt about the value of communication and how to combine verbal and non-verbal techniques. The day ended with a riding session when the pilots got the opportunity to practice their skills and pick up some new ones from the trainers.

Saturday Morning the youngsters had the opportunity to immerse themselves into the MXGP paddock life, and were lucky to take a tour of the impressive Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing structures and see how teams prepare themselves for the racing day. They also went to look around TwinAir’s facilities. The last stop was the TV Compound where youngsters were able to see the Studio Show and learn about what happens behind the scenes. They also had the chance to meet Paul Malin and Lisa Leyland.

There will be eight more MXGP Academy coaching opportunities during the 2023 season in  Spain, Latvia, Germany, Czech Republic, Finland, The Netherlands, Turkyie and the Combination of MXGP Academy with MTV-project education program in Indonesia, Lombok

David Luongo, MXGP Mag Editorial – April 2023

Dear MXGP Friends,

As we are finalizing the preparation of the Grand Prix of Portugal it is also the time for the April edition of the MXGP Magazine.

During this month, we finally went back to Switzerland, on the typical and historical track of Frauenfeld. It was definitely a great success with more than 30.000 fans that attended the event during the weekend. It was also the occasion for MXGP to reconnect with the Swiss fans, as it was some years that a GP didn’t take place there. Monday racing program was live on the Swiss National television and the President of the Swiss congress of the States honored us with her presence. On the racing side, it brought a new GP winner in the Premier class with Maxime Renaux and in MX2 Thibault Benistant won the Grand Prix.

The week after Easter, the MXGP moved to a classic Grand Prix, one of the most breathtaking places in the calendar, Pietramurata, next to the Lake of Garda. Here again the public answered the call despite the absence of Tim Gajser and all the Slovenian fans that usually come for this race. In the MXGP class, Jorge Prado won his first GP of the season and brought a fourth different overall winner in four Grand Prix! It shows how the MXGP class is open this year and how the general level has risen the last couple of seasons. On the other hand, Romain Febvre is getting his pace race after race, and with Jeffrey Herlings, Maxime Renaux and Jorge Prado, we have four riders in 40 points. In MX2, Andrea Adamo made the Italian fans go crazy with his first ever Grand Prix victory, on his home soil. Here again, with Jago Geerts leading the championship but having only 30 points ahead of the top 5, the season will continue to rise new highs!

It is also very good to see the different starting grids full of participants from the beginning of the season in all the classes. The new system of qualification for the MXGP class with the wildcard riders is working great and the adjustments on the age limit for the EMX250 from 23 to 21 years old improved also the participation in MX2. We continue to improve and fine tune the pyramid system of the talents, which was put in place more than a decade ago to facilitate the road to the MXGP class.

Finally, Agueda will bring a lot of novelties, as the track has been completely rebuilt and we will race the opposite way this weekend of what we were used to race in the past. This weekend will also host the EMX125 and EMX250 series. All the Grand Prix will be broadcasted on MXGP-TV.com as usual and you can stay connected on our different Social Media platforms to stay close to the action!

See you in Portugal.

Exciting Moments for Riders during visit to Local Museum in Agueda!

Today, many riders kicked-off the MXGP of Portugal with a Media Event arranged by local organisers who brought them to the Nucleo Museologico de Macinhata do Vouga in Agueda. Mayor of Agueda Jorge Almeida was present to welcome everyone on-site.

This was an amazing opportunity for riders present such as Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini, Red Bull GASGAS Fatcory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder, MRT Racing Team Beta’s Ben Watson, MRT Racing Team Beta’s Alessandro Lupino, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, Andrea Bonacorsi, Ivano Van Erp and Karlis Reisulis all from the Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team, MJC Yamaha Team’s Janis Martin Reisulis, amongst other to connect with the past through the stunning historical motorbikes and trains. They were able to learn about the history and memory of the region and its community that is associated with the railway identity and culture until today.

The event started with a photo of the riders present amongst the historical bikes displayed in front of the museum. Then the tour began as riders and team managers were ushered into the main room to visit and admire the remarkable centenary machineries.

Following the tour, the jovial atmosphere led to the Coenen brothers and Mayor of Agueda Jorge Almeida, to take a spin with the antique bikes. A truly memorable experience for people on-site.

The event followed by a welcoming and thankful speech from Jorge Almeida who was really happy to be welcoming MXGP into Agueda. Riders and the Mayor then took an improvised family photo across the train tracks in front of the museum and the event concluded with a lovely tasting of local delicacies to end this beautiful and joyful moment.

With this amazing moment finished, the racing may now start with riders focusing on an important racing day. We can expect to be a sensational Grand Prix with a lot of challengers ready and capable to win in Agueda.

Jack Chambers – MX2 World Championship Experience

Young American rider Jack Chambers has been something of a success in the MX2 class in 2023. Racing for the Steve Dixon owned Big Van World MTX Kawasaki team scored the services after the opening round in Argentina. Since racing in Switzerland and Italy, the Grand Prix rookie has enjoyed the experience.

For Chambers, it is the first time he has raced without the support of his family, but it is also a huge learning experience and one that his trainer, Zach Osborne (a former GP winner) told him that it will make him a much stronger person and racing on these tough GP circuits will make him a better racer.

“Definitely and that is the biggest reason for coming here,” Chambers said. “It wasn’t just coming to race. I had to commit to living without my parents and being home. At some point I will get more comfortable, but everyone has their home. Zach lived here for four years and when he comes back, he goes to Mel Pocock’s house and that is his second home. Zach came here with a two-race deal, and he ended up staying four years.”

Steve Dixon is a man who helped Osborne to win a Grand Prix in Turkiye in 2009 and eventually for his future success including racing for his country at the 2017 Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. Working with somebody of Dixon’s experience was an easy decision to make.

“The first contact with Steve was through Zach and he explained the situation and he said to come riding and see if you want to race the bike. Then we started talking about how long he wanted me to race, because if I was coming to Europe to test the bike, I wanted to know what the rest of the season would look like, he mentioned he would want me for the rest of the season. I looked at the season and there were sixteen rounds left. It took me a while to make the decision to step away from what I knew. The decision was hard, but seeing what Zach and Mike Brown did and the experience I will get I decided to move.”

Now heading onto Portugal for his third Grand Prix, Chambers is excited to try and make the top ten in a Grand Prix, and possibly even finish top three before the season has finished. With some really nice circuits coming up, places that Chambers felt he could ride to his full potential, it might be an idea to keep an eye on this fast Kawasaki rider in the near future.

MXGP gets back to the competition at the newly designed circuit of Agueda, Portugal

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 26 April 2023 – The FIM Motocross World Championship is going to Portugal for the second year in a row to mark the fifth stop of the 2023 campaign. The circuit of Agueda is historic and has been on the calendar for a long time, since 1985. The 2023 MXGP of Portugal will mark the 24th MXGP event of the circuit and will be held on the 29th and 30th April.

Over the years, some amazing riders put their name on the winning list in Agueda such as Stefan Everts, Antonio Cairoli, Gautier Paulin, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Team HRC's Tim Gajser and last year Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado. However, to spice things up the circuit will have a variation this year as the direction will be inverted which is going to add to the challenge for every rider as this will feel like a new circuit.

Last Sunday 10 riders were invited during a Press Day to test the new layout and all the changes made in the jumps throughout the circuit. Amongst them was Team HRC’s Ruben Fernandez, currently 5th in the Motocross World Championship and Portuguese riders invited by the organiser who will race this weekend. The excellent feedback showed that the circuit of Agueda will be even faster and more spectacular this weekend.

The MXGP of Portugal will also host the 3rd round of the EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing with Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team’s Andrea Bonacorsi and MJC Yamaha Official EMX125’s Janis Martin Reisulis leading their Championship respectively.

The MXGP of Portugal in 2022 marked the 4th stop of the season and it was Jorge Prado who won the first GP of his 2022 season with a great 1-2 to stop Tim Gajser to win 4 GPs in a row at that time which showed how much Prado likes this circuit.

This year, Prado arrives in Portugal with the Red Plate, 201 points and full of confidence after winning his first GP of the season in Trentino. He has been incredibly solid as he never missed a podium so far this year. Prado also won 3 times in Agueda over his career which places him as a big favourite. However, the competition will be tough as we saw 4 different GP winners over the first 4 GPs of the season which says a lot about the level of rivalry in 2023.

Prado is leading Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Maxime Renaux by 17 points who also comes in Agueda with a back-to-back podium and a GP win in Switzerland showing that the Frenchman is getting into his rhythm to fight for the lead.

Jeffrey Herlings is 3rd in Championship after an amazing performance in Trentino as the ‘bullet’ won his first race of the season in an incredible manner. Without a struck of bad luck on the first race in Trentino when he got caught in the multi-rider collision, Herlings could have obtained even more points as he starts to show incredible speed recently. He also has already won in Portugal which will give even more of an edge over his rivals.

4th in the Championship Standing is Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre who has won the RAM Qualifying Race in Trentino rewarding an excellent start of the campaign although he also was involved in the collision on the first turn of race 1 in Trentino hindering his chances to get top points. However, Febvre has shown he is capable to win this season and will be determined to join the GP Winner List of 2023.

Ruben Fernandez is 5th and the other GP Winner this season. After a performance dip in Sardinia the Spanish has bounced back by getting a 6th and 4th overall finish in Switzerland and Trentino respectively. Coming in Portugal will be like going to compete at home for him and Prado with many home fans cheering for Spanish riders. This could be an amazing opportunity to get back up to the podium for Fernandez.

The other riders like Team Gebben Van Venroy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Glenn Coldenhoff 6th and 7th are also consistently in the top 10 and performing very well. Vlaanderen has been fighting for the top 5 many times so far in the season which demonstrates his abilities to ride for the top points. He went 6-12 in Trentino for a 9th overall. Coldenhoff got 2nd on the podium in Sardinia with a race win and got 6th overall in Trentino with 8-6 after a dip in form in Switzerland which demonstrates that we can count on the ‘Hoff’ to chase podiums.

Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini and Monster Energy Yamaha factory MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer are 8th and 9th respectively with 108 and 107 points in Championship standings and have different dynamics. Guadagnini just clinched his equalled best MXGP finish in his home GP in Trentino with a 5th place overall. Seewer has been quite unlucky so far with few crashes that unable him to get where he should be in term of his speed. With two 11th overall finish in Switzerland and Trentino, the Vice Motocross World Champion is ready to convert his well-known speed into big points on a circuit where he won in MX2 in 2017.

SM Action Racing Team Yuasa Battery MXGP’s Alberto Forato has been a very good performer so far and is 10th in the series. The Italian is really consistent and this could help him to get some opportunities to get even higher on the leader board. 10th overall in Trentino with a 5-15, Forato sits in 10th and showed the potential to get even higher.

2022 MXGP of Portugal MXGP Top 3:

  1. Jorge Prado
  2. Tim Gajser
  3. Brian Bogers

In MX2 last year, it was Tom Vialle who won in Portugal in front of WZ RACING TEAM’s Mikkel Haarup and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Jago Geerts.

Jago Geerts is still the Red Plate holder after the MXGP of Trentino. The Belgian managed to finish on the podium, 3rd after winning race 1 but going down twice successively in race 2. He has not won a GP in the last 2 outings and he could stop that series by winning the MXGP of Portugal for the first time of his career. He is still the only MX2 rider to have won more than one heat this season with 4 in total.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Andrea Adamo is 2nd in the Championship and arrives in Agueda on the back of his first GP Win of his career in Trentino, closing the gap on the leader Geerts and overtaking Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team’s Thibault Benistant along the way. Adamo has displayed incredible control over the beginning of the season as the Italian didn’t seem nervous to close the victory in Trentino. Benistant with a 4-5 in Trentino got 6th overall. Although this is very close, he lost a bit of ground in the Championship running and moved down to 3rd. The Frenchman has 3 out of 4 podiums this season so that proves that he is always a threat for his competitors

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who is 4th in the Championship has performed to high standards and looks like he could get his first GP win at any time now. With 2 podium and a top 5 in the last 3 GPs, de Wolf shows we can count on him to push for the win at every occasions. Red Bull GASGAS Fatcory Racing’s Simon Laengenfelder, 4th in Trentino, won race 2 with a formidable display leading from start to finish and making up for his 9th position in race 1. He proved again that he can win GPs and if he shows consistency over 2 races, he could soon be a GP winner in 2023.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan Van de Moosdijk 6th in the Standings, was a bit quieter in Trentino but still managed 7th overall and continues on his good form. Winning race 1 in Switzerland will definititely put him with the favourites in Portugal. Liam Everts, 7th in the Championship and getting better and better results as the season goes, clinched his first podium of his career with a 3-3 and a 2nd place overall. With the pressure to get a first podium out of the way, the Belgian is now even more threatening for his rivals and will be one to watch over the weekend. He will want to carry on and grow his family’s legacy.

Other riders such as F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Lucas Coenen, 8th and 9th in the Championship showed some fulgurance this season and even if they still missed on podiums and race wins, they proved that the potential is there and only need to get into good position early in races. TEM JP253 KTM Racing Team’s Jan Pancar is another rider that has definitely made some noise this season, even leading the MX2 RAM Qualifying Race in Switzerland for few laps. Being 10th in the Standings is a testament to his hard work and tenacity.

The MXGP of Portugal will mark the debut of another podium-worthy young rider, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Sacha Coenen. After an injury that had to push back his debut in MX2, S.Coenen will definitely be an important rider this season and it will be interesting to see him and his twin brother Lucas compete against each other in the big class.
