MXGP

David Luongo – Editorial – February 2023

Dear MXGP Friends,

Here we are, in two weeks we will fly to Argentina and the beautiful track of Villa la Angostura for the opening Grand Prix of the 2023 MXGP Season. The time has flown since Red Bud and the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations as this winter break was full of work and preparation to allow us to deliver the best season possible to the Motocross fans.

In my last editorial I already talked about some changes concerning the increase of freight allocation for the overseas races and the entry fee reduction for the Wild card riders, but January was also a month of innovation and changes for us, in particular on the regulations. Together with the FIM and the Manufacturers Association, we decided to implement a new points system for the very popular Qualification Race of Saturday for the MX2 and the MXGP categories. Some years ago, we were the first motorsport promoter to introduce this Saturday Race with the target to give a bigger interest to the Saturday program on the Grand Prix Weekend and to enlarge the actions for the fans. From Argentina, the top 10 will score points during this Sprint race starting from 10 points for the winner, 9 points for the second and so on …

After the MXGP Sprint race we will organize a Paddock show on a bright new structure to talk with the winners and some special guests with the public. The result of the Sprint race will continue to give the starting grid of Sunday Grand Prix races. Another big novelty for 2023 will be the qualifications for the MXGP class in case more than 40 riders are entering the GP. This change will allow any wild card rider to participate to the MXGP category and try to be qualified for the GP program.

In January, we had to modify the end of the season’s calendar and the date of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in France – Ernée to the 7/8 of October. First of all, I want to thank the Motoclub of Ernée for their efforts to change the date and the FFM for their support. It was very important for us to do our best to keep a logic on the different calendars of our sport. We have a great collaboration with the American promoters, MX Sport and Feld, and to be able to offer the best MXoN ever, it was primordial to align our different calendars. I strongly believe that a great collaboration among all the parties is bringing our sport to a higher and brighter future. In result of this change of date, we have to guaranty that the best riders of all the Nations will be able to participate to most important Off Road event of the year, for the biggest pleasure of the fans!

Infront Moto Racing has also been present in Asia for the last days, participating to Sportel Asia in Bali, Indonesia, with the aim to enlarge our presence in this market in regards to the media and TV broadcasters.

Finally, I would like to have a big thought for Tim Gajser, who suffered an injury last weekend during a pre-season race. Unfortunately, he will miss the beginning of the season, we wish him a prompt and good recovery.

See you in Argentina!

History of Argentina – Winners

Motocross Grand Prix and the country of Argentina have created a very strong relationship over the last decade, with the MXGP Championship returning there in 2015 and running nearly every year since then, apart for those tough years of Covid in 2020 and 2021.

While the last six visits to Argentina have really surprised and excited the MXGP paddock, it was way back in 1985 that the first ever Grand Prix was held in the country. Finnish rider Pekka Vehkonen won the 125cc Grand Prix at the Salta circuit and a year later it was Dutchman Dave Strijbos who stood on top of the podium in Argentina.

In 1987 American Rodney Smith won the 250cc Grand Prix of Argentina, held at the Salta track. Smith went 1-1 to lead on Jorgen Nilsson and Rob Herring. A year later, little known Giuseppe Andreani also won on Argentine soil, also at the Salta circuit. It was the last of four Grand Prix wins for the Italian, a rider who was a regular top ten guy in his career and took out that victory in Argentina with 4-1 results in the 250cc GP, beating better-known riders Vehkonen and American Ricky Ryan. That win in Argentina was something of a surprise as the aging Andreani was edging close to the end of his career and actually finished 12th in the Motocross World Championship in 1988.

In 1989 another American stood on top of the podium as Trampas Park won at the Cosquin circuit, taking 3-1 results to finish ahead of countryman Mike Healey and Italian Alessandro Puzar. Parker also went on to win the 125cc Motocross World Championship in that 1989 season.

The Grand Prix series didn’t return to Argentina for a handful of years, but in 1994, yet another American won there with Bobby Moore finishing with the victory in the 125cc Grand Prix. Moore went 1-2 to lead home his compatriotBader Manneh with 3-1 and future 125cc World Champion Alessio Chiodi, who scored 2-3 scores.

Chiodi set to become a three-time Motocross World Champion a few years later, was becoming hard to beat and in 1995, again at the Cosquin track, the Italian finished first with 1-4 scores. Second on that day was American Jimmy Button and third Frenchman Mickael Maschio (another future World Champion).

As we all know, the Motocross World Championships didn’t return to Argentina for 20 years and in 2015 German rider Max Nagl took the victory from Clement Desalle and Antonio Cairoli. Nagl was on fire in 2015 and finished with 3-1 results, while Desalle came home with 1-3 and Cairoli 2-2. A handful of races later and all three riders were out of championship running with injuries.

In another surprising win, Dylan Ferrandis won the MX2 GP in 2015, beating Pauls Jonass and Jeremy Seewer, two riders from the current list of elite MXGP riders. It was Tim Gajser, who finished in fifth place in this race that would go on to win the MX2 World Championship and his relationship with Argentina would grow as the years went on.

Gajser sure enough won in Argentina a year later, scoring 3-1 and beating Cairoli and Nagl, who joined him on the podium. In the MX2 class that year, Jeffrey Herlings added his name to the winners list in Argentina, scoring 1-1 toclean up Seewer and Russian rider Aleksandr Tonkov.

Gajser showed his liking for the Patagonian track with another win, but this time 1-1 in the MXGP class, behind him came Jeremy Van Horebeek and Evgeny Bobryshev. In the MX2 class Jonass won in front of Jorge Prado and Seewer.

In 2018, Herlings now in the MXGP class, won a classic battle against Cairoli, Herlings scoring 2-1 results and Cairoli 1-2, in third was Desalle with 3-3 scores. In the MX2 Jonass won again, ahead of Thomas Olsen and Hunter Lawrence.

A year later Cairoli took his first win in Argentina, finishing with a perfect 1-1 ahead of Gajser with 2-2 and Van Horebeek 6-3 scores. MX2 saw the arrival of Prado as a winner on the magnificent Patagonian circuit, he scored 1-1 to lead home Thomas Olsen and Mitch Evans.

As mentioned, 2020 and 2021 we missed travelling to Argentina as COVID 19 rocked the World, but we did return last year with huge reception from the large spectator turnout. Gajser won again with 2-1 with Maxime Renaux and Prado behind him. In the MX2 it was Frenchman Tom Vialle who won from Jago Geerts and Mikkel Haarup.

Now we return again to Argentina and as always, the MXGP paddock and the enthusiastic locals will celebrate this strong bond between MXGP and Argentina. Bring on round one of the 2023 MXGP and MX2 Championships.

MXGP – Battle Stations

While the 2023 MXGP championship is nearly two weeks away, the buzz around what will happen in Argentina is building. The unfortunate injury of 2022 MXGP champion Tim Gajser last week took a part of the puzzle out of the 2023 series, but don’t worry, the list of contenders is an extensive one, and getting longer.

With the pre-season nearly over, it is clear many of the title rivals are looking strong and I for one can’t wait to see the gate drop for round one in Argentina. Leading the way must be five time World Motocross Champion Jeffrey Herlings. Coming off 12 months without racing, the Dutchman is showing signs that his speed is returning and you just know that, come round one, “The Bullet” will be on fire.

“For me,” Herlings said. “The year 2022 was a year to forget in sporting terms. But I also learned a lot from this, so I am now fully focused towards 2023. I can't wait to get back to racing. It's been way too long. 2022 was a tough year for me, but once we made the decision to recover from the injuries and focus on 2023, I had a date and target ahead of me and it's getting close now. I realize that I will need some track time and my plan is to build up the season, also because it will be a 'normal' long championship for me again after three years. I want to try to get back to my best level. The team around me has changed quite a bit, but the goals in racing always remain the same.”

When you add 2015 World MXGP champion Romain Febvre to the starters, you just know he will want to repeat his championships success, from nearly a decade ago. His showing in the 2021 championship where he battled Herlings and Gajser proved he has the speed. Also returning after an injury riddled 2022, and on a brand-new Kawasaki 450, he will have the motivation to come back for an assault on the title. Febvre recently undertook an operation to repair problems with his arm pump and he is now 100% ready to fight for major points in Argentina.

“I was three weeks without riding the bike after my arm surgery,” Febvre said. His team manager Antti Pyrhonen is happy with his progress in the winter. “Romain has had arm pump at the start of the season in past years, so he decided to undergo precautionary surgery last month and only started riding again last weekend.”

I also think that for this season, most people are excited about the performance of the Yamaha boys. Every major Yamaha rider has won a race in the pre-season including Jeremy Seewer, Maxime Renaux, Glenn Coldenhoff and Calvin Vlaanderen and how fast their new Yamaha machine is. Like Kawasaki the blue boys come in with a new machine and listening to people inside the paddock, this bike is as good as anything they have made in the last decade and it shows on the track.

How about the two Spanish chargers, Jorge Prado and Ruben Fernandez. They have already battled in the pre-season and both show amazing speed and we already know that Fernandez wants to be the number one Spanish rider in MXGP. However, Prado, a two time MX2 World champion continues to improve and gain experience and I wouldn’t bet against him adding another World title in 2023.

There will of course be more riders chasing the big points in Argentina in the MXGP class, but the men above are all capable of pushing for the front and a victory in round one. Which one takes out the overall in a little less than two weeks’ time will have a slight advantage heading to round two in the deep sand in Sardinia for round two, a track that will suit many of these riders mentioned. Let the 2023 season begin.
