Three Men – History Makers

The 2023 MXGP championship has every chance to see some historical moments being made. While the title race could be open between a handful of riders, you have to pick defending champion Tim Gajser as the early favourite, but the list of the competition is very tough this year.

With only three men having won the MXGP championship, those being Tim Gajser, Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre, there is a chance that a new champion will be crowned in 2023. Could it be Jeremy Seewer, or Jorge Prado or maybe Maxime Renaux. Both Prado and Renaux have MX2 championships, but for Seewer, he has the opportunity to take his first ever World Championship.

Gajser currently has five World title to his name and 43 Grand Prix wins, placing him well up the all-time list, while his biggest rival, Jeffrey Herlings also has five World motocross championships and 99 Grand Prix victories.

If either Gajser or Herlings win this year a MXGP Championship, they will join the great Joel Roberts with six world title and sit third, along with Antonio Cairoli (9 World titles) and  the Belgian legend in the all-time list of Motocross World Championships Stefan Everts (10 World titles) ahead of him. To climb into third place in the all-time list would be a massive achievement for either riders and one the sport will embrace with open arms.

As far as the all-time list for Grand Prix victories, Herlings is second behind Everts, who has 101 Grand Prix victories, while Gajser is sixth on the all-time list with only Everts (101), Herlings (99), Cairoli (94), Joel Smets (57), Robert (50) ahead of him. It seems obvious Herlings will go to the top of that list in 2023 and Gajser has every chance to catch or pass Robert and move into the top five.

Red Bull GasGas factory rider Jorge Prado also has a chance to make a move in the all-time lists. If he can add the MXGP Championship to his two MX2 title victories, then he obviously becomes a three-time Motocross World Champion. Those with three World motocross championships is also an impressive list with Paul Friedrichs, Guennady Moisseev, Gaston Rahier, Andre Malherbe, Dave Thorpe, Alessio Chiodi and Greg Albertyn, all part of that select group.

In terms of Grand Prix victories, the Spanish star has 36 GP wins to his name, equalling legendary Belgian Roger De Coster, while just ahead of him are Torsten Hallman on 37, Mickeal Pichon 38 and Eric Geboers on 39. A good year by Prado could see him move past all three and a little closer to Gajser.

Paradise For Motocross

The MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina is really starting to get a nice piece of history with the Motocross World Championship series. Having arrived on the calendar for the first time in 2015, this magnificent facility quickly brought smiles to everyone’s faces. It is not only a stunning circuit, but also the area was something that we quickly enjoyed as the local people welcomed us with open arms and big smiles.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Jeremy Seewer struggled somewhat last year, but still enjoyed the experience and as always, the friendly rider from Switzerland can’t wait to get back to Argentina and build on the relationships he made in 2022.

“I felt good on the track there,” Seewer said in 2022. “It was cool to race in front of all the Argentine fans. They were super supportive and to have the fans back after the last couple of years, you really felt it. The energy and atmosphere was really special.”

Defending MXGP World Champion Tim Gajser, who took the victory in 2022, like Seewer, really loves the environment in Argentina and the nature of the people and their culture. The Team HRC man wants to start his season in the same fashion as last year and head towards that sixth Motocross World Championship victory.

“This is such a nice place and track,” Gajser said. “I am very pleased that so many fans came out to support us. I hope we continue to come back here because it is an amazing event for everyone.  A big thanks to the team for all their support on what is a really long trip down here to Argentina.”

Another five-time Motocross World Champion, Jeffrey Herlings, will be making his return to Grand Prix racing after missing the complete 2022 season. The Dutchman has many good memories of Patagonia, including a stunning victory against Antonio Cairoli in 2018. Herlings would go on to dominate that season. Let’s see what the season opener will bring him in 2023.

“Obviously I love the track,” Herlings said. “I also had some bad luck, won a race in 2015 and Pauls Jonass landed on me in the other race, 2016 I won and 2017 was one of the worst races ever. I like the fans there and the track and I like starting the season outside of Europe. It is a nice calm start to the season. It’s going to be a long season. I want to be there for the long run, for the championship. I will try and be consistent in Argentina, and of course it would be nice to win, but to get the championship, you need to get on the podium or top five. If I come out of Argentina with a top five it will be way better.”

Now, with a little over a month before we all head to Argentina, track builder Greg Atkins is working hard to make sure that something new greets the riders and for sure, with temperatures around 30 degrees this time of year in the area, everyone in the paddock will finally get some warmth after a long cold winter in Europe.

JK RACING INTRODUCES ITS NEW TEAM

After a very successful 2022, with the crown of WMX Vice World Champion and various national titles, Team JK Racing welcomes some new faces in 2023; a lineup composed of very young talents.

Starting with the young Swiss talent Kevin Brumann, who will take part in the entire MXGP World Championship as well as the Italian Prestige MX1 Championship riding the brand new yz450f; despite his young age Kevin will be ready to take a major leap into the premier class with the goal of gaining experience and improving race by race.
He will also be joined by another new entry, the winner of the Masterclass YZ125 bLU cRU 2022, Nicolai Skovbjerg, a promising young Danish rider who will be fielded in the EMX125 European Championship in 2023 riding a GYTR kitted YZ125.

Accompanying the Dane Skovbjerg in the European 125 Championship will be the reconfirmed Nicola Salvini, who after being grounded by injury in 2022 is ready to redeem himself. Salvini will also take part in the Italian 125 Junior Championship and the Rookies Cup.

The other confirmation is definitely that of Manuel Iacopi, by now a veteran of JK Racing is ready to face his eighth season with Riccardo Boschi's team; Manuel will take part in the Italian Prestige MX2 Championship riding a YZ250F.
The team is waiting for Charli Cannon to join the group for Round 1 of the WMX World Championship which takes place in Riola Sardo.

The riders will debut in the two Internazionali d'Italia races in Ponte a Egola and Pietramurata, before heading to Patagonia-Argentina and the fantastic track near Villa La Angostura on March 12 with Kevin Brumann.

Kevin Brumann:
"Together with the team and my coach Joel Roelants we had a good winter preparation.
It was the first one without injuries for me this has always limited me in past seasons.
I am looking forward to start racing and gaining experience with the best riders in the world in the MXGP class.
The goal will definitely be to hit the points zone all GPs and try to improve my performance throughout the season
."

Nicolai Skovbjerg:
"I am very happy to be part of the JK Racing team for 2023.
We have done a good job with the team and Brian Jorgensen this winter with many hours on the bike and I have gained a good feeling. I am looking forward to this season.
The goal will be to hit the Top10 in the European 125 Championship and reconfirm myself in the Danish championship."

Nicola Salvini:
"Last year my season was interrupted immediately by a knee injury that kept me out of racing for 5 months while still managing to win the Yamaha bLU cRU 2022 championship race in France on my return. This year in the winter preparation with my team, JK Racing, we were able to test the new bikes and came up with a good result. I am feeling very good with the new bike and I am in good shape. I expect a season full of results and will always aim to get the best possible placing."

Manuel Iacopi:
"With this weekend the 2023 season starts.
This winter we worked a lot and made many developments on the bike. We finished the 2022 season in the best way as far as the Italian Championship is concerned, I will try to do my best also this season trying to get good placings in the Italian Championship and the other competitions I will take part in.
Thanks go to the whole JK Racing team and Yamaha Motor Italy who continue to believe in me.
I thank again Malandrone Motocross Park for the help they are giving me."

RED BULL GASGAS FACTORY RACING EXCITED TO CONTEND FOR WINS IN 2023 MXGP SEASON

JORGE PRADO, MATTIA GUADAGNINI AND SIMON LÄNGENFELDER FOCUSED ON SUCCESS THIS SEASON.

The Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing trio will enter the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship with lofty expectations, after a rather productive off-season. Jorge Prado, Mattia Guadagnini and Simon Längenfelder have built on the positive results that were gained last year and are chomping at the bit at the prospect of achieving so much more when the new season fires into life.

- Jorge Prado excited about progress made in the off-season.

- Mattia Guadagnini keen to show potential on the MC 450F.

- Simon Längenfelder focused on fight for the 2023 MX2 title.

Jorge Prado had a positive start to his career as a GASGAS athlete, as he took the bronze medal in the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship and won a Grand Prix on the MC 450F. '61' wants so much more than that though and has made many steps forward in the wintertime to ensure that he is ready to contend for the premier class title. Prado is rejuvenated and keen to start his bid for the crown when the nineteen-race campaign fires into life in Patagonia-Argentina on March 12.

Joining Prado in the premier class is Mattia Guadagnini, who will aim to make a splash in his first full season aboard an MC 450F. Guadagnini obtained valuable knowledge in the ten rounds of competition that he did on the more powerful machine and will apply that when the new season starts. Remember that he finished the previous season with 4-5 scores at the season finale and showed that he is a force to be reckoned with! Watch this space.

Simon Längenfelder was a revelation in his first term with the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing squad. '516' shocked the world at round one, as he raced to a dominant victory after winning the qualifying heat and both races, and then maintained that fine form in the events that followed and claimed third in the points quite comfortably. Now, armed with confidence and momentum, he is motivated to get on the gas and make a bid for the world title.

The Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing squad will warm up for the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship by competing in select pre-season events, such as the first round of the Internazionali d'Italia series this weekend. The Grand Prix season starts in Patagonia-Argentina on March 12.

Watch the riders in action at our pre-season shoot here.

Download high-res images of our racers in action at our pre-season shoot here.

Jorge Prado: "We have had a good off-season so far. We made some changes and I feel better prepared. I am really excited to go back racing in a month! I hope that I can be on the podium at every single round this year and get as many wins as possible. For sure, the main goal is to get the title. I think I am capable of doing that. It is already my fourth year fighting for it, so hopefully I can do the same this year."

Mattia Guadagnini: "I made a mid-season change of class last year, did some GPs in the premier class and gained some good experience. Now with more hours on the MC 450F and better preparation, I feel ready for my first full MXGP season. 2023 is about to start and I cannot wait!"

Simon Längenfelder: "I am super happy to start my second year together with the Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing team, powered by De Carli. We showed some good improvements last year. There were some ups and downs, but we finished third in the MX2 championship standings. Now I cannot wait to see what 2023 brings."

Davide De Carli (Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing Team Manager): "We have had great winter preparation with all three of our riders, who have been putting in the work on every type of ground that we are set to meet this season. We are also developing the bike and cannot wait to start the season! The team is exactly the same as last year – the riders are talented guys and I am really confident. The goal for this season is to be on the podium at every Grand Prix and to reach the main goal, the world title!"

Robert Jonas (Head of Motorsports, Off-Road): "I am so excited to see what our GASGAS trio can do when the 2023 FIM Motocross World Championship starts in a little over a month. Davide De Carli has done such a good job since stepping into the role of team manager, and I am certain that he will help his riders achieve their respective goals over the coming months."
